Students charged with cheating based on test results of watch-dog computer program

The Fédération desétudiantes et étudiants du Québec (FEEQ) will decide this week whether or not students can put the in­ creased amount in an account administered by the courts. The partial fee boycott would be legal because FEEQ is currently challenging the fee hike in court.

"Students at McGill just aren't interested in strikesand dem­ onstrations," FEEQ VP Undergraduate Affairs Robert Fabes said. "It's a constructive, legal, non-threatening way for stu­ dents to protest, and it will really hit the University where it hurts."

The Alumni Society and the Women Associates of McGill University organizes the annual book fair to raise money for each organisa tion'sendowmentscholarshipand bursary funds.

According to Alumni Relations Officer Kathryn Whitehurst, the book fair raised about $2000more than it usually does.

"This is a record breaking year," Whitehurst said.

Scott's Foods Operations Manager for the Union Building complained that "The Alley is a place to serve food and drink.

Some people come in only to smoke and read."

Some students fear injury when making the transition to the darkened Alley from the much brighter outdoors. "You can't see anything and there are limbs and tables under foot. I think it maybe dangerous enough to warrant going in the front door of the building so I can avoid the place entirely," said one regular Alley customer.

According to Young, the five students have had to put their academic careers on hold while they wait for a decision from the Committee on Student Dis­ cipline. No independent evalu­ ation of the program's validity took place before the students were charged. As a result, they have been forced to spend their own time and money to com­ mission an evaluation of the program.

SSMU VP University Affairs Deborah Pentesco will lead a protest against the computer program in Senate tomorrow.

"There is a need for clarifica­ tion of the program before it can be passed in Senate," Pen­ tesco said.

Both Young and Pentesco believe the computer monitor­ ing system should not be ap­ proved until it has been evalu­ ated by an independentexpert.

Five students have been charged with cheating as a re­ sult of the trial of a new com­ puter program that the univer­ sity plans to implement cam­ pus-wide.

The computer monitoring system is used to analyse ana compare students' answers on multiple choice exams. If adja­ cent students have too many common wrong answers, there is a high probability that they collaborated illegally during the exam. "(The program) displays the frequency of the distribution of similarities in exam papers," said program creator Professor Harpp.

The set of recommendations that will be introduced to Sen­

ate tomorrow by the Academic Policy and Planning Commit­ tee states "the purpose of these regulations is to diminish the opportunities for the students to cheat... rather than to initiate individual disciplinary action against the students."

Butthisstatementcontradicts the case of the five students who have been charged with cheat­ ing. The computer program is being used as principle evi­ dence against them.

Cameron Young, a director of the McGill Legal Informa­ tion Clinic, criticized the use of the system for the purpose of initiating disciplinary proce­ dures.

McGill reimburses students

BY JANET LOGAN Solin Hall residents are satis­ fied with a 25% rent rebate, despite the fact they could with­ hold their rent entirely or ask for a permanent rent reduction based on the conditions of their apartments under the regula­ tions of the Régie du logement.

McGill University allotted the 25% rebate on September and October rents of its newest resi­ dence in response to continu­ ous complaints. But even though most students are satis­ fied with the reduction, they criticized the way they were treated during negotiations.

Students from Solin Hall met with Director of Residences Flo Tracey, Solin Hall Project Man­ ager Derrick Osborn and Asso­ ciate VP Physical Resources Sam Kingdon last Monday to address complaints about resi­ dence conditions.

Although most residents think they got a fair deal be­

cause of the reimbursement, they feel Kingdon and Osborn were patronizing and evaded their questions at the meeting.

"I think because we're stu­ dents, they tried to get away with things," Solin resident Ian Golding said.

"We were not taken seri­ ously," said one Solin resident who wishes to remain anony­ mous. "There's no way we would have been treated like this if we were business people."

McGill offered the 25% re­ bate last week because it had not fulfilled its legal obligations as a landlord. Construction of the new residence was still not completed when students moved in. For the pastsix weeks many students have had tocope with unfinished rooms, leaky toilets and roofs, broken win­ dows, unpainted walls and missing furniture.

"I want to know when I'll get a window put in," Nicki Rad

said. "I've had some really cold nights."

"They're breaking the lease left and right," Ari Maidenberg said.

According to the Régie du logement, a dwelling must be clean and in good condition, tenants must be able to "peacea­ bly enjoy the dwelling for the term of the lease", and the land­ lord must comply with health and safety regulations. If these conditions are not fulfilled, the tenants may withhold the rent entirely or they may ask for a rent reduction.

"No windows and a caved-in ceiling are considered unfit for living," said Anne-Marie Mi­ gneault, director of McGill's Legal Information Clinic. "[The landlord] is not sup­ posed to get any money," Mi­ gneault said. "His obligation is to give the tenant a sufficient place to live."

To the Tribune: In response to the Women's Union's desire to remain womenonly, one wonders how its members would react to a men's club similarly excluding women. In many cities across North America, legal action has forced men-only clubs to open to both sexes on the grounds that they are sexist and deny women thier civil rights.

The Women's Union is now seeking, through constitutional amendment, exemption from this same kind of judgement. They feel thier discriminating against men is justified by the need women have of a place to which they can "get away", in the process being better able to "educate and engage" men. This sounds reasonable, but only by the logic that men have the right to establish similarly discriminatory organizations, the kind that feminist groups have loudly protested and fought in the past. That the Women's Union speata of promoting better understanding between sexes by separating them is curious, since it would more likely lead to ignorance, but more importantly, they should notobject to men congregating in the same way.

Sexual discrimination in private club membership must be either wholly rejected or accepted. What kind of equality is based on double standards and contredirions?

Censoring the arts is obscene The outcome of the Robert Mapplethorpe obscenity trial marks a victory for anti-censor­ ship groups in the United States, but does not resolve the question of censorship of the arts.

How can we be objective about art when sub­ jectivity forms the basis for its understanding?

Seven photographs from Mapplethorpe's retrospective "The Perfect Moment" were used as evidence in the obscenity charges against the Contemporary Arts Center, which held the exhibit, and its director Dennis Barrie. Five of the images depicted homoerotic sadomasochis­ tic poses and two were of nude children. The prosecution charged that these photographs were obscene and violated community stan­ dards.

It is understandable that these images would be difficult for the average person to view. But, by highlighting only 7 of 175 photographs in the exhibit, the prosecution misrepresented the Mapplethorpe exhibit. Despite the misrepresen­ tation, lawyers for the defense were able to prove the artistic merit of Mapplethorpe's work and that highlighted photographs were not obscene. Despite the verdict many people still consider the photographs obscene.

The verdict established the right of the museum to show the photographs and allow people to make a personal decision whether to view the show or not. This freedom of choice is of fundamental importance.

Many people don't know how to react to art, especially when it deals with sex. The unin­ formed solution is to consider art that is sexu­ ally explicit as pornographic or dirty, and

dismiss its artistic merit. But the difference between art and pornography is easy to see: the difference lies in intent. Pornography is intended to capitalize on exploitation, art is designed to enlighten, to question, or to edu­ cate.

Art about sexuality poses an even greater problem, given societal repression. Mapple­ thorpe's photographs confront homosexualiy head on and to someone who has not been exposed to it or who has been brought up surrounded by homphobia, such a confrontaiton can be incredibly intimidating. But art, to be called art, does not have to be appeal­ ing. Its importance lies in the artist's personal goals and the work's context within the larger framework of artistic trends.

It is all too easy to judge art for its surface appearance. The ignorant museum goer sees a work like Newman's "Voice of Fire" and says 'anyone could paint that.' To say that Mapplethorpe's work is obscene is to confirm a total lack of understanding about what the artist was trying to achieve. If you don't like it and don't want to understand it, don't look at it. Censoring art only perpetuates societal ignorance.

The subjectivity of artistic merit hinders objective judgement, but the solution does not lie in censorship. Creative expression is one of the few remaining positive outlets in a society where conformity and mediocrity run rampant.

Suppose you are Canada's constitutional surgeon.

You deem that it's time to slice and slash, disregarding poten­ tial negative ramifications.

While inside the body politic, just before you cut, a young doctor asks a question: YD: What is that you are removing? A tumor? A vital organ?

RS: The Queen- the cancer of Canada.

YD: Where did the cancer start?

RS: Like I said "When the concept of Canadian unity first arose it was to protect Britain's agricultural machine from the United States". Period. No room for ideas, ideals or dreams. There was no logic behind nation building.

YD: What is Canadian unity like now?

RS: Scattered, what's worse is that the crown imposes homoge­ neity and centralism.

YD: I thought Trudeau did that?

RS: No, that is bilingualism and centralism. Anyway, my point is that, like I said to her "...your Majesty is behind most of Canada's anger and current instability. We would probably be more confident individuals if we knew the groups in which we live are respected, rather that ignored for a foreign idea of homogeneity".

YD: You mean unity, not homogeneity. The Queen has never imposed anything on Canadians. In fact, freedom and justice has flourished under the crown.

So when we remove this symbol of Canadian unity we can then build a real nation, right? But the Queen obscures this now, right?

Canada's problems fie with the Queen, right?

RS: Yes, because she symbolizes a unity which should not logically exist.

YD: So we have to destroy such symbols of unity. I see. We have to let separatists dictate the state of our state. We should discard this part of our constitution and constitional history; to start anew.

But shouldn't we hesitate- and look at the negatives of doing this too?. After all the Royal institution is symbolic of the constitution. And the values and notions from which our state grew.

RS: Having a monarch is something of a paradox. Like a Queen ruling Canada, but not. Like not having a single document as a constitution consisting of democratic sound bites, but having a constitution none the less. Like having the potential for tyranny, and yet having a vibrant democracy. I'd prefer to clean up this mess. It's not very modem.

YD: I'll digress, Canadian politics is an odd balance of public confidence, traditional momentum, and rights, responsibilities and rules. If Canada is to continue to thrive as a democracy we have to pick from the best pieces of the past.

What is that beating heart you have cut from the body and holding decisively in your bloodied hands, you colonial rebel you?

RS: It is the Queen.

YD: You had better hope she was a cancerous growth. Because if she wasn't you could be wasting your time on a non-issue, or worse yet slashing further at the baYence of democracy in Canada.

-Brian Mulroney describes the GST in a streetside inter­ view xvith the McGill Daily last week.

My roomates, great cutters of grocery coupons, have taken to sighing at TV ads for cheap food. On their behalf I join the ranks of people who feel that the GST weakens Canadian life. Ours is a seldom heard but fundamental concern.

The GST attacks the student diet by undermin­ ing our right to buy cheap assorted food. Worse even, the new tax puts us in the middle of a dangerous game of power politics.

We buy assorted food, rather than bulks of the same thing, because we know that two or three people in a house won't eat the same stuff. We also know that, after eating at the Union and at pizza places between there and our apartments, we won't have the chance to use a full head of cauliflower before it looks like some kind of broccoli.

We buy cheap too meaning that rather than filling our stomachs with two nine-dollar chickens, one chicken and one twodollar bag of cookies will do the job fine.

But the GST discrimi­ nates against our buying patterns by making such things as a "family-pak" of mini Snickers cheaper than the same volume of as­ sorted, but individuallywrapped chocolate bars.

And some of the GST's most intriguing distinc­ tions are in effect excise taxes against the cheap food on which we depend.

Granola cereal, one of the few cheap foods in our diet sanctionned by society, is about to be taxed. Granola bars, too expensive for most students to eat as a snack, are not.

Brian Mulroney may hope to cover-up the reasons for his mixed-up policy by simply admitting that Tots of things will be taxed." But university students - experts at unrav­ elling Descartes and De­ oxyribonucleic acid cannot dismiss the distinc­ tion between taxable salted peanuts and non-taxable unsalted ones so easily.

Time for affirmative action -The Women’s Union

P a rts o f Sp eech ROBERT STEINER There is evidence that the GST policy on basic grocer­ ies is Tory power politics gone terribly wrong at our expense.

Here's my theory: An initial attempt to ap­ pease backbencher puri­ tans produced the distinc­ tion between tax-free good food and taxable junk. But fear of cookie and cake lobbies dumping tonnes of frosty icing on Parliament Hill tempted Michael Wilson to water-down that initial commitment with a cunning plan.

The government would appease Canadian 'snackfood' makers by making their increasingly popular "family-paks" tax-free. The move would also delight environmentalists con­ cerned about excessive packaging.

Before he could say "Wunderbar", however, Mr. Mulroney found that dairy farmers were not pleased. One dairy group in Ontario actually told Senators studying the GST that yoghurt is usually bought in individual servings so that fickle familes - and university students - could try many different flavours at once.

In a final and seemingly desperate move, the Tories promoted yoghurt as a breakfast food by taxing granola cereal - angering the very environmentalists they had previously pleased.

Far fetched and frighten­ ing as this theory may sound, it is the only one which fully explains the GST's attack on student eating.

Maybe students shouldn't worry about the GST, though. After all, the legislation offers us an opportunity to avoid the tax and improve our eating habits simultaneously.

We could all rush to have children.

That way, we could claim a better tax credit and live out our academic careers slurping GST-free baby food.

The Students' Society needs to bring its constitution in line with the Canadian Charter of Rights by including an affirma­ tive action clause.

When the Canadian consti­ tution was repatriated in 1982, the Charter provided that, "every individual is equal be­ fore the la w and has the right to equal protection and equal benefit under the law without discrimination." This wording is based on an idealized vision of society, one in which all indi­ viduals or groups start out with the same amount of power.

In reality certain individuals or groups are at a disad vantage because of both past and pres­ ent discrimination and oppres­ sion.

Affirmative action is a com­ mon and well-supported means of addressing this disadvan­ tage. It is used in instances in which certain groups can bene­ fit from exceptional measures to obtain a position of social equality.

The SSMU promises to each of its members equal benefit under its constitution by insist­ ing that, "The membership of each accredited Activity, Club and Functional Group of the Society must be open to all members of the Society."

However, unlike the Cana­ dian constitution it does not address the limitations of "equal before the law" which is not sufficient to provide gen­ eral equality of opportunity in a world with sexism, racism, homophobia and other forms of discrimination. Section 15 (2) of the Canadian Charter (the Affirmative Action clause) "does not preclude any law, programme or activity that has as its object the amelioration of conditions of a disadvantaged individual or group."

The students at McGill, as a part of the larger community, are not immune to either op­ pression or the responsibility for it. Therefore as a commu­ nity the students at McGill are in a position to take the same step as the Canadian govern­ ment.

A motion will be brought for Council to sponsor a referen­

dum to include an affirmative action clause in the constitu­ tion within the month.

d e M o n tré a l Québec's newest student association passed its first major test last week at the Université de Montréal (UdeM), but only just.

54% of voting students ap­ proved membership in the Fédération des étudiantes et étudiants du Québec (FEEQ) during last week's referen­ dum at UdeM. 17% of the student population actually voted. Such results could be interpreted as either a failure or a success for FEEQ, con­ sidering the relatively low turnout and the high number of people voting against the federation.

This interpretation holds true particularly because UdeM is a key political base for FEEQ. Not only is UdeM one of the universities in Québec with the most stu­ dents, it is also one of the founding members of FEEQ. Two of the organization's two Presidents, as well as many policy initiatives, have come from UdeM. A defeat at UdeM could have been fatal to FEEQ yet the ap­ proval it gained can be seen as a bittersweet success.

The fact that UdeM stu­ dents actually approved FEEQ membership is a success in itself. FEEQ Presi­ dent Nicolas Plourde said because "FEEQ is a new organization...we took a big risk." He is right. FEEQ has neither a well-known name nor a long tradition of political activism. It has fought an uphill battle against the Association nationale des étudiantes et étudiants du Québec (ANEEQ) for a place in the Québec student movement.

It also had to convince the UdeM student body to pay an extra two dollars per year per person for membership.

Since total students' society fees were also only two dollars a year, that was a difficult task. Despite all these obstacles, FEEQ passed at UdeM. This is a quite a victory...or is it?

FEEQ did win UdeM sup­ port, but just barely: 54% is not a strong mandate of support for the organization and the turnout of 17%, barely quorum, does not indicate strong student interest.

But do these results mean that FEEQ should pack up and go home?

The low turnout probably is not an insurmountable problem for FEEQ. It is unlikely that low turnout can be attributed to wide­ spread opposition to the federation. Voter apathy is a more likely suspect accord­ ing to André Cléroux, Editor-in-Chief of the UdeM student newspaper Contin­ uum.

Low turnout could also be attributed to inadequate campaigning by FEEQ. Plourde said "at UdeM there is hardly any tradition of referenda." UdeM hasn't held a referendum since 1982. Students are used to voting at departmental meetings. Although UdeM's students' society endorsed FEEQ membership, neither a "yes" committee nor a "no" committee was formed to encourage voting.

Why would almost half of the voting students at UdeM oppose the province-wide student association. Temelini suggested "there were a lot of people who were against FEEQ" at UdeM. But the people who voted against membership may not be op­ posed to the actual student federation, but to investing in an unproved organiza­ tion. FEEQ needs to produce concrete results to convince students that membership is worth the extra money.

Despite the multitude of interpretations, the referen­ dum made one thing clear: FEEQ must mount stronger campaigns. These same problems will surface at other universities such as Bishop's, the University of Sherbrooke and l'Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières all of which will hold refer­ enda this year, unless there is massive participation. If FEEQ wants province-wide support, it will have to work harder. This fragile organiza­ tion cannot afford to have its mandate doubted.

BY CHARLES ROBISON Students wishing to promote specific social and political is­ sues on campus will receive more money due to the crea­ tion of a new section in the Students' Society budget.

Spending for social issue campaigns and events is up $10,000 this year. In the past,

money for social awareness projects came out of the 'Spe­ cial Projects' portion of the budget. This year, SSMU di­ vided that category in two to create a new and expanded category of Social Awareness Projects which receives $20,000 of the Students' Society's $1,154,595 budget.

According to SSMU execu­

tives, the purpose of creating a separate category for SAPs is to show the SSMU executive is serious about advancing social consciousness on campus.

"The objective of SAPs is to educate and create awareness on campus about certain issues like sexual harassment or in­ digenous peoples in Canada," SSMU President Kate Morisset said.

SSMU VP Finance Jane Howard believes the creation of the SAPs category will allow people who wish to push a social cause to know that SSMU wants toassist them financially.

The creation of SAPs is part SSMU's Executive's attempt to live up to its mission statement which claims it is committed to provide the support necessary to "foster student initiative and promote social awareness".

However the Executive may have priorities that conflict with SEE FUND. PAGE 8

Students also expressed con­ cern about workers entering apartm ents and bedrooms without knocking or prior noti­ fication. Instead of addressing this concern Osborn offended many students by saying "well, we don't let just any Tom, Dick or Harry into your apartments.

Although some of you might like a Tom, Dick or Harry in your apartment."

Osborn also laughed off stu­ dents' concern about the fire exit being locked.

"We were asking reasonable questions and he was laughing about the fire door which really isn't laughable," Maidenberg said. □

BY RICH LATOUR McGill students begin voting today in a referendum decid­ ing whether or not to join a student federation to help give them a strong voice at the gov­ ernmental level for the first time in seven years.

Since the campaign period began October 12, the Students' Society (SSMU) government has campaigned in favour of joiningthefederation. ThePostGraduate Students' Society (PGSS) government spear­ headed the "No" campaign.

The voting to determine whether or not McGill will join the Fédération des étudiantes et étudiants de Québec (FEEQ) will continue through this Thursday.

According to its constitution, FEEQ's goal is to "study, repre­ sent, protect and develop the academic, social, cultural and economic interests and rights of its members."

FEEQ President Nicolas Plourde thinks that McGill's presence in the federation will make a crucial difference for both McGill and FEEQ. "It's essential to ensure that McGill get representation at the provincial level," Plourde said.

"To face the big machine (the

government) we have to be strong. McGill will be strong if it's in FEEQ and FEEQ will be stronger with McGill's mem­ bership."

According to "Yes" commit­ tee chairperson Karla MacDonald, now is the right time for McGill to join FEEQ. "Before now, there was no student federation that met the needs of McGill students," MacDonald said.

The last time McGill was part of any student federation was in 1983, when it joined the Association nationale des étu­ diants et étudiantes du Québec (ANEEQ). McGill pulled out of ANEEQ a year later due to the heavy influence of CEGEPs. Michael Temelini, chairper­ son of the "No" Committee, objects to immediate FEEQ membership because he thinks students have not been given enough time to properly reflect on the implications of joining FEEQ. "People need time to make proper, informed decisions," Temelini said.

"Joining FEEQ should have been discussed and debated in a sophisticated way, but their ("Yes" Committee's) whole campaign has been run in a heavy handed manner. Democ­

racy means consulting people."

The PGSS voted to form a "N o" Committee October 3.

Temelini, who is also President of PGSS, maintains that its for­ mation is not solely a result of SSMU's refusal to grant auton­ omy to graduate students.

"It's not an internal issue," said Temelini.

But MacDonald maintains that PGSS is using the referen­ dum to further its legitimacy as a body separate from SSMU. "I feel it's a shame that the "No" Committe can choose such an important student is­ sue to drag down a large or­ ganization just to promote their desire to secede from SSMU," MacDonald said.

Grads opposed to joining FEEQ feel sufficiently repre­ sented within the student movement because they are already members of three other organizations: the Canadian Federation of Students, the Québec Graduate Association, and *he National Graduate Council.

According to Temelini, grads are angry and insulted at not having the choice of deciding for themselves whether or not they wish to join a fourth or­ ganization.

The "No" Committee is also

skeptical of SSMU's financial accountability. If the rerendum passes, SSMU will collect $1 from every studenteach semes­ ter, which adds up to $44,000

per year for FEEQ. According to SSMU's consti­ tution, at least 10% of students must vote for a fee increase to be valid.

But Harpp believes the pro­ gram's accuracy is almost above question.

When a pair of students have an unusually high percentage of wrong answers in common, the program computes the like­ lihood of such an occurrence.

If the chances are higher than

cheated, Harpp maintains that it is safe to assume that the students did cheat.

Although based on the laws of probability, the program is so accurate that it has been highly commended by the In­ ternational Educational Service at Princeton, where a similar program is used.

When a person cheats "a mental fingerprint is left on the

exam" that can often be de­ tected by the program, said Harpp.

Even though the system is being used as an initiator in the case of the five students being charged, Harpp said, "the fo­ cus of this study is not to catch anybody cheating, but rather to change the exam system so that exams may be conducted in such a way that students write their exams individu­

ally."

Harpp feels that a combination of better examination regulations, such as alternate row seating and multiple version exams, could lead to a virtually cheat-free environ­ ment at McGill.

"Some faculty members are just as much at fault as the er­ rant students: sloppy exami­ nation regulations lead to cheating," Harpp said. □

"It was established that women's issues would be very important to us (the Executive) this year," Howard said. "I think that it's an interesting opportuni ty this year with four female executives."

Although Education Coun­ cillor Karla MacDonald thinks the new fund is "a good idea", she is concerned about the se­ lection process for the alloca­ tion of funds.

"You have to make sure that you allow the opportunity for both sides to be equally repre­ sented, that you are not picking favorites," MacDonald said.

Clubs' Representative to Council Peter Thomas is wor­ ried because the selection proc­ ess is monopolized by the Ex­ ecutive.

"People with a social project go to the Executive Committee to present their project and they don't go to Council," Thomas said. "If the Executive Commit­ tee rejects the proposal, then the proposal won't go on to Council to review it. I just don't want it to simply die at Execu­ tive Committee."

The money alloted for SAPs responds to a "great demand", according to QuébecPIRG Di­ rector Shannon Dodge.

QuébecPIRG cut back its dis­ cretionary fund for short term awareness projects this year.

"We didn't want to because there are a lot of good groups out there," Dodge said. "We felt all along it was more down SSMU's alley to fund short term campus projects."

The first group applying for money wants to study Mohawk issues and then distribute the information to students at McGill and other universities.

BY ASHLEIGH HIGGINS There are very few films that can rightfully claim to be clas­ sics, and even fewer still which can currently be viewed in their full splendour on a large screen.

But take heart, all you die­ hard movie fans, because a true cinematic experience is on dis­ play right now in Montréal. It is

The gifted Disney lends grace to something as mundane as al­ gae and even in­ vests prehistoric creatures with distinctive personalities.

Walt Disney's Fantasia, and if you have not yet seen it, now is your chance to witness this wondrous marriage of classical music and animation.

First released in 1940, Fanta­ sia has been newly restored for its fiftieth anniversary presen­ tation. For the first time in almost forty-five years, new prints have been made from the film's original negative.

Thanks to modem technology, these new prints have a picture and sound quality that exceeds even that of the original.

Fantasia arose out of Disney's desire to expand the possibili­ ties of his art. He felt that classi­ cal music was the perfect com­ plement to animation, and his enthusiasm was shared by Leopold Stokowski, conductor of the renowned Philadelphia Orchestra. Consequently, what began as a ten minute "special" eventually evolved into a series of eight animated shorts with a final price tag of 2.28 million dollars—an enormous sum for a forties production.

Disney's choice of music, which ranges from Bach's 'Toccata and Fugue in D Mi­ nor" to Schubert's "Ave Ma­ ria", provides something for everyone and the animated renditions of each piece are equally diverse. From random bursts of colour to dancing mushrooms, Fantasia never ceases to awe and delight. The gifted Disney lends grace to

something as mundane as al­ gae and even invests prehis­ toric creatures with distinctive personalities. And the drawings are so precise, so impeccable that at times it is possible to forget that the images are not real.

Even if you are not a fan of animation, it is difficult to ig­ nore the artistic and technologi­ cal wizardry of Disney and his collaborators. Perhaps their greatest achievement lies in the fact that Fantasia is able to completely captivate the audi­ ence without the use of any dialogue—the characters and situations are so carefully de­ picted thattheyneed no further embellishment.

Most people had actually come to see west-coast social­ ist celts Spirit of the West, but the Edmonton openers had no trouble catching and keep­ ing attention.

Idyl Tea's sound is best characterized by jangly gui­ tars and harmonious vocals.

A great deal haschanged since they last played in Montréal three years ago. The band has signed with Toronto's Attic

Records, released a self-titled debut album, and the members no longer tour on their own money. Their newer sound is more aggressive and up front without losing any of the trio's immediate rootsy appeal.

Idyl Tea clearly enjoys per­ forming for a crowd. The origi­ nal trio, guitarist/vocalist Evrett LaRoi, drummer Craig Metcalfe, and bassist/vocalist Henry Engel played a solid, flawless set. The band capital­ izes on the strength of their recorded material but surpasses the album's sound with an energy that cannot be repro­

duced in the studio.

The group was originally formed in Edmonton in the mid­ eighties in an enviroment that produced such relatively suc­ cessful outfits as Jerry Jerry, Moe Berg of T.P.O.H., Jr. Gone Wild, Psyche, and S.N.F.U. In a pre-show interview, drummer Metcalfe credited Edmonton as a place where there was a lot of space to work on the act. "There was a real scene happening.

BY COLIN FERGUSON AND STEVEPRATT Quigley Down Under features a gruff hero with a heart of gold rebelling against a powerful tyrant to defend .................. the helpless elple masses in the name of human rights.

How original. Director Simon Wincer and America's favourite hunk, T om Selleck, have brought a monumental vision to the screen, in the tradition of past a Selleck classics such as HighiRRoad to China, Lassiter and Her Alibi.

The plot (for lack of a more derogatory word) begins when Quigley (Selleck), the Matthew Quit ' world's finest long-distance marksman, is lured to Austalia to kill dingos on the farm of a rich land-owner, Elliott Marston (Alan Rickman of DieHard). Soon Quigley discovers that his prey will not be dingos, but rather the poor, helpless and extremely cute Aboriginees. Upon hearing this plan, Quigley, ever the man of action, hurls his employer though a paho patio door. Marston reciprorecipro­ cates by having his lackeys aban­ don Quigley near-death in the middle ot the desert.

Quigley vows revenge and gets help from his new-found comanion, Crazy Cora (Laura San liacomoof sex, liesand videotape).

Cora is an attractive recent di­ vorcee who appears to be a couple bullets short of a clip. The re­ mainder of the film focuses around this John Wayne/Nelson Mandela-esque quest to serve justice and end Marston's reign of terror.

The movie was filmed in the Austalian outback and is both picturesque and pointless. On­ slaughts of frolicking kangaroos, dingos, and Aboriginees become tiresome. At times, Quigley attempts to look like Out Out o f Africa.

Selleck's accent is less consistent than a roulette wheel, and he never quite finds the character.

He may soon rue the day he parted with Higgins, T.C., and Rick.

The hackneyed script is loaded with cliché western jargon.

Photographs of Children: 150 Years, currently on display at the Saidye Bronfman Center, is the first major retrospective to focus entirely on children and child­ hood. Montréal marks the show's second of nine stops on a two year tour. April (Anna Drblik) ana Julius (Ed Caissie), a co m fo rtab le, m iddle-aged couple, are interrupted at break­ fast one morning by the reap­ pearance of their only son Wal ter (Kerry Harris), a career criminal who nas spent most of his adult life in jail.

As Walter hulks over the cheer­ fully laid out breakfast table, April and Julius try madly to figure out his motives in return­ ing. Eventually, their fascination with his flight back "to us" drives them to lie, misremember, and fight each other in efforts to acco­ modate a son who frightens and threatens them. In doing so, the well-to-do suburban couple be­ comes even more frightening than the unrepentant convict.

The play presents its central metaphor, tha t of the family as an impenetrable and inescapable prison, before the action even begins. The set design includes masses of cage and barbed wire to seperate the audience from the arena of battle - the family's kitchen table. Looming in the background is a depiction of the Biblical return of theProdigal Son. Alas, the rest of the play never quite lives up to the promise of tne set. Family conflict always

contains submerged tensions. It is here that Walter fails. Itisaplay bristling with the promise of tension, but which never actu­ ally produces any.

The main problem is Walter: his portrayal issimply not threat­ ening. Harris plays tne character with a straight-forward angst reminiscent of James Dean. He does not come across as danger­ ous, but merely misunderstood.

Angela Alston's direction does further damage to Walter's threat potential by constantly placing April and June with their backs to this potential killer. TTiey talk and talk about how afraid they are of their son, but their body language communicates com­ plete trust.

Colin Krivy's script often does not give the actors much mate­ rial with which to work. Most of their time is spent being angry.

April is allowed a couple of moments of maternal angst, but even those instances fail under the weight of her forced and unbelievable teary breakdowns.

Julius spends the play in an Oedipal rage against nis son which does not allow any explo­ ration of paternal bonds. While April and Walter spend ample time on stage alone together, SEE WALTER. . .

Idyl Tea's first break was a demo cassette single entitled Awfully Nice Eyes. The song was a tongue in cheek comment on the often banal content of pop lyrics. The song was taken sur­ prisingly seriously and became a number one hit on the Univer­ sity of Alberta's FM station.

Awfully Nice Eyes eventually found its way onto the band's first vinyl offfering, a five song EP entitled "How I See This Table". The EP was released in the fall of 1986 and was well received at many campus sta­ tions across Canada; it even found mention in the Globe and Mail's now defunct record col­ umn.

Promoting their new album, Idyl Tea, the group find them­ selves happily on the road. The exposure of opening for groups like Spirit of the West is impor­ tant to Laroi, "since the band is

Due to thier situational inno­ cence, children can be vehicles of sympathy. The portrait entitled Enniskillen(\9M) by Gilles Peress of a young boy from Northern Ireland is wrenching. The,boy is emprisoned in a hospital bed, his head lolls to one side in a manner reminiscent of a cruxified diety.

William Klien's distorting lens makes Yankee Majorettes (1963) a good-humored piece with its juxtaposition of the arrogance of adolescence with the absurdity of star spangled suits and boots.

All too often photographs of children conjure up the naked man/naked baby photo, which litter dorm walls. By contrast, each piece in this collection is deserving of individual attention.

In the words of curator Corkin, these images "provoke, they demand response and, like chil­ dren, require it more of the heart than of the mind" .

Montrealers may view this wonderful show until Novem­ ber 8,1990. It is secreted away adjacent to Côte Sainte Cather­ ine Metro, about 20 minutes travel from McGill. Spend at least one hour at this free exhibit: clear mid-terms from your mind and celebrate the art of looking. □

Mood swings are a natural re­ sponse to the various stimuli that life hands us everyday.

Some people, however, can reach incredible lows in recur­ rent depressive episodes and may decide to seek help. The type of treatment given, how­ ever, will vary with philosphy of the doctor consulted.

and drugs. "It really depends on the individual. In extreme cases, it may be necessaiy to use drug treatment in order to get the patient to respond to therapy."

Bernstein felt drugs are not a cure and should be avoided unless absolutely necessaiy.

"Most clinical depression is caused by some sort of loss, usually in self-esteem and selfworth. This loss may be per­ ceived, actual or anticipated drug therapy only takes care of the depression, it doesn't cure it." □

BY ANNE VIS An awareness of the symp­ toms of suicidal behavior and prevention methods may very well save the life of someone contemplating suicide.

The most dramatic of symp­ toms is a sudden change in mood or behaviour in the suici­ dal individual. Depression, sleep disturbances, drug abuse, stress and a tremendous feel­ ing of hopelessness that makes the individual feel incapable of coping with minor problems are all signals of potential suicide.

Another symptom indicative that a person is contemplating suicide a completely irrational

outlook on the situation. "The individual may be constantly moving in and out of touch with reality," said Ted Baker, Acting Director of McGill's counsel­ ling services. Prior suicidal behaviour is also a strong warn­ ing of potential crisis.

Psychiatrist Robert Gruber added, "many people commit suicide out of an irrational desire to 'make a point.' This sort of suicide is often related to a desire to impose guilt on an­ other party, or a feeling that people will pay attention to one who makes such a dramatic gesture. Many people also commit suicide in the belief that by doing so they will 'make life

better for those around them'."

People seriously contemplat­ ing suicide rarely communicate this intention directly. An in­

Financially speaking, the '80's have brought a back­ wardness to the feminist cause - in Maureen O'Neil's opinion "a reversal of eco­ nomic fortune," for poor women everywhere. Invited to speak at the Muriel V. Roscoe Annual Lecture on October 17, O'Neil ad­ dressed this issue in a speech entitled "Against the Tide: the Struggle for Women's Equality in the '90's."

She opened her speech by quoting the founder of the International Planned Par­ enthood Federation : "I dream of the day when every child born is wel­ come, when men and women are equal, and sexu­ ality is an expression of intimacy, pleasure, and tenderness." She then added that even forty years after this desire was ex­ pressed "this is still a dream and not a reality."

In these countries, women are "disproportion­ ately poor" and "depend much more than men on social transfers."

O'Neil rattled off a seem­ ingly endless set of statistics to demonstrate the fact that women of nations struck by economic depression, devel­ oping or otherwise, were direct victims of First World foreign aid cut-backs. Accord­ ing to O'Neil, a report review last week in Ottawa by the Commonwealth Ministers of Women's Affairs indicated

that "macroeconomic policy which seemed to be neutral may indeed have perverse effects on women."

She argues that when a country, such as Canada, shrinks aid to already eco­ nomically weak countries, those countries tend to redistribute the few resources they have mainly to men, leaving women with less or nothing at all.

Since many women remain "shackled by illiteracy and in­ sufficient education," women's rights in society continue to be restrained, if not totally muted. "The ability to exercise freedom may, to a considerable extent, be directly dependent on the education [women] receive," O'Neil commented.

O'Neil emphasized the need to establish a global sisterhood. She suggested that women must help women to overcome the difficulties faced in a male-dominated, male-oriented society.

Ottawa Gee-Gee^ surprising 6-1 victory over the Queen's Golden Gaels last week sealed McGill's fate. The victory by Ottawa eliminated any chance McGill had of making the play­ offs this season.

But rookie running back, Delando Hawthorne accented the look to the future with 117 yards rushing on 19 carries and one yard run for a touchdown that put McGill ahead 12-1 in the second quarter.

The Management student who graduated form John Ab­ bott last year looked like a man ready to take over the mantle as the league's top running back.

"I got a chance to play," said Hawthorne.

The Redmen may have been shaken by a controversial pen­ alty kick that allowed Sher­ brooke to tie the game. They were certainly shaken by the subsequent practice. Coach Sandrin, who was anything but pleased by his team's perform­ ance, helped them find their hard work ethic.

Or, as he put it, "They did a little bit of running...."

Whether it was the punish­ ing practice, the bone-chilling weather, or the raw hunger for victory, the Redmen looked like a new team as they confronted UQTR. From the opening whistle it became all too apparent that a rout wasabout to transpire. The first goal was called back on a questionable off-side. Butin the

Hawthorne, however, wasn't the only young player to have a great game. Quarterback Justin Raymond and receiver Steve Papp teamed up for two TD's to break the game wide open for McGill.

Raymond's first touchdown pass was probably his best of the season- 26 yards to the pintsized Papp, staking the Redmen to a 22-1 lead midway through the third quarter.

Only three minutes later Papp and Raymond connected again over 19 yards and with Scott Weldon's convert it was 29-1 McGill.

Raymond passed for 170 yards and Papp received for 97, contributing to the Redmen's 496 total yards number But the victory meant little in the standings as McGill was already out of the play-off pic­ ture.

"Things were a little differ­ ent this morning," said Papp referring to the feet he and nis teammates knew they were out of play-off contention. % e wanted to go out on a high note, though.

McGill rounded out the scor­ ing when Francois Gau vin came in to showi arm passing ms way to lbb yards. He hit Marc Thiffeault

with a pass which Thiffeault turned into a 23 yard gain as he neatly cu t across the field to the endzone leaving the Carleton backs in a tizzy.

The victory over Carleton must of course, be put in its proper perspective.

Tnis is a team that has won only one game in the past three years ana the bottom line is that McGill did not quality for the play-offs for the fist time since 1986.

"We dug our own grave," said Redmen player Norm Beaudry.

"We lost the games we should have won ana we can't blame anyone but ourselves."

Ht's just unfortuante we couldn't put a couple of these (games) together earlier on the season," added defensive back Ian Fitz-Gerald.

What's stewing: The Remen will now play the Bishop's Gaiters on Saturday in Lennoxville to conclude the season ...Redmen QB Yanik Prefontaine did not see any action in the game ...Linebacker Ken Frieoman and DB Bob Linklater had strong games combining for two interceptions, a fumble recovery and 13 tackles ...Court­ ney Shrimpton led McGill re­ ceivers with 98 yards. □

Official scoring took place shortly thereafter as a relentess Redmen attack created an op­ portunity for mid-fielder J-P Vialard to chip a ball to de­ fender Julian Barrow. He pro­ ceeded to head the ball over the defense, run around them and then adroitly place the ball behind the helpless keeper.

The second Redmen goal, perhaps the most poetic of the evening, was started and fin­ ished by Vialard. After skillfully skirting around three UQTR players, he played the gi ve-andgo with striker Jeremy Prupas SEE SOCCER. . .

The question of whether Canada should offer its ath­ letes scholarships for their ability has longbeen a hot issue in sporting circles in this country.

At present, there is no comprehensive scholarship arrangement in Canada akin to that of the United States.

Considering the malaise that penetrates college sports south of the border, that might not seem to be a prob­ lem. Money sets the ground rules at a vast majority of the schools.

But every year our own universties lose a large number of elite athletes to U.S schools who offer highly lucrative and desirable scholarships.

The loss of these athletes hurts teams in Canada. They often can't compete with the wealthy American schools for blue chip players.

Athletic scholarships may be the way to raise the level of Canadian inter-collegiate sports one important step further.

There exists already a form of limited scholarships in Canada. In Alberta and British Columbia an athlete who plays on a varsity team automatically receives $500 per semester. As well, Simon Fraser University, in Bumably, B.C., offers scholarships but they are not part of the CIAU which gov­ erns college sport here.

In Québec, we have La Fondation du Sport Universtaire Québécois. It was founded in 1983 to keep the best athletes from Quebec in the province by awarding scholarships annually. Since 1983 the foundation nas awarded more than $373,000 to promising athletes.

Tomorrow, they will hand out another $78,000 in a gala at Le Grand Hotel. Three McGill athletes and the Martlet soccer team are in the running for this money.

Other than that, athletes are paying their own way.

"If young men and women were in a position to win an athletic award more kids would play sports. I think parents would put a lot more importance in following their kids and coaches would get more involved.

It's a real feather in the cap to win an athletic award not only for the athlete but also the school and the commu­ nity."

Dubeau also indicated a negative side to the issue.

"There will always be people who take advantage of system and will cheat, he cautioned.

"There are schools right now who are giving money under the table."

With a closely monitored programme that type of behaviour could be elimi­ nated.

Athletic scholarships are a logical next step for the CIAU. If one or a group of companies sponsored a programme where money was equally distributed to qualified schools, this privately run scheme would keep marquis athletes in Canada.

A scholarship programme would raise awareness of university sport to an unprecedented level through increased public attention the awards would attract.

It is time to consider seri­ ously the scholarship avenue. If not, inter-colle­ giate sports will hum along at their current level, and universities will continue to miss an opportunity to markedly improve the sporting scene.

Linda Thyer is McGill's num­ ber one cross-country runner.

This season she was declared the QSSF Female Athlete of the Week twice in a row. The story behind it makes her feat more amazing feat.

Four weeks ago this 22 year old native of British Columbia was looking for a sport that would help her stay in shape for triathlons.

"In the last three years I've been doing triathlons. When I came to McGill, I thought I'd keep up with my training, so I looked for a running club and people suggested the track team. I talked to coach Denis Barrett and that's how it all started," said Linda. "My cross­ country career is barely a month old!" she added.

Linda has won two races this year- the Sherbrooke meet as well as one in Potsdam, NY. She is very happy with the outcome. Everybody has been impressed with her early suc­ cess, especially Linda.

"I was actually really sur­ prised that I did as well as I did.

This is the first time I've done it, so I thought it would be more competitive. I thought the people would be far beyond my level," she said.

The only running Thyer had done before was in triathlons.

Her last running race was in 1985 where she won Age Group competitions Back in B.C. she never dreamed of joining a varsity team, but when she joined McGill's team, she ex­ pected everything but winning in such a short time.

"There are some good run­ ners on the team. I've won the races,butthatdoesn'tmean that the others aren't close behind." said Linda.

"Sometimes it's really hard to mix both sports and studies.

It's not good to keep a heavy schedule on either side; you have to know how much your body can take."

As for long term goals, Linda

has her eyes set on the "Ironman Triathlon", which will be held in B.C. next summer.

Meanwhile, she is concentrat­ ing on the Provincial Champi­ onships this coming weekend.

"I enjoy running because it makes me feel good. It's relax­ ing, but at the same time I like to compete and push all the way. It's a bonus if I win, but if I don't it's O.K. because that's not my frtain reason for being there." □

Martlet goalkeeper Natalie Lapenta was injured last Friday afternoon when a strong gust of wind knocked the soccer net on top of her during a match against Concordia at Loyola Stadium. Lapenta suffered badly bruised ribs and was hospital­ ized as a result. The post-poned game has been rescheduled for Friday afternoon 4:00pm at Loyola Stadium. The game will decide first place and an automatic bye to the Quebec champi­ onship on Nov. 3. The Martlets went on to defeat UQAC11-0 on Sunday.

By this time, a UQTR player was lucky to touch the ball. The Redmen simply outhustled them, winning most of the 5050 balls. UQTR was unable to get possession of the ball.

Whenever they did, the best they could muster were a few extremely optimistic shots from 35-40 yards out.

After mid-fielder Rolf Gronas narrowly missed his shot from 18 yards, Prupas dis­ played his speed by scoring around the keeper with a goal reminiscent of Cannigia's bril­ liant effort against Brazil to make it 3-0 Redmen.

Striker Neil McCulloch, de­ spite an ankle injury, scored the next three goals by outworking the opponents with brilliant flashes of finesse.

While his first two goals in­ volved individual ball-control and deft footwork, the team build-up was equally inspiring.

Defender Chris Drysdale and mid-fielder Rick Taweel pro­ vided glaring opportunities to both Prupas and McCulloch w ith excellen t passes.

McCulloch barely missed a precise cross from Gronas and Prupas rolled a McCulloch header-layoff by the far post by a breath.

The second half was as enter­ taining as the first. McCulloch scored again with a perfect ball from the speedy Taweel and Barrow notched two more, giving him three for the night: a remarkable feat for a defender.

The final Redmen goal was marked by mid-fielder Chris Sullivan, fittingly rewarded for his efforts by pouncing on a blocked penalty shot and bury­ ing it in the net.

Perhaps the best summary of the game was succinctly ex­ pressed by the injured striker Jonathan Drysdale: "We rocked 'em." □
