new s Continuing Education students to seek BoG seat

BY JON ABLETT The President's Council unanimously approved a mo­ tion supporting the McGill Association of Continuing Education Students' (MACES) bid for a seat on the Board of Governors (BoG). The move was prompted by the recogni­ tion of student underrepresen­ tation on McGill's top policymakingbodies and the need for student unity.

Student representatives cur­ rently hold only four of the 44 seats on BoG. None of these four seats is open to MACES representa­ tives.

MACES President Jim Osborne realizes the Presidents' Council support will notgreatly advance the bid for BoG repre­ sentation but sees it rather as "an expression of (student) solidarity".

Osborne cites the number of students MACES represents and their distinct needs as rea­ sons for seeking BoG represen­ tation.

"MACES represents between 15,000 to 17,000 students which is almost the same number as McGill's undergraduate popu­ lation," Osborne said. "It's a SEE MACES . . .

RACSQcuts off relations with FEEQ RACSQ, the organization that represents graduate student associations from across the province, decided to stop negociating its membership in FEEQ until McGill’s Students’ Society grants autonomy to its graduate students.

"This will have a massive impact on the Québec student movement," graduate representative to Council and former FEEQ VP-Graduate Affairs Eric Darier. "Ironically, while FEEQ claims to be able to unite students in the province, it has not united the Québec student movement.”

RACSQ was going to decide on what terms it was going to join FEEQ by January, 1991.

LAGEM seeks McGill AIDS policy In light of the McGill AIDS centre opening, the Lesbian and Gay Employees of McGill (LAGEM) formed a committee to pressure McGill into implementing an AIDS policy, which cur­ rently the University lacks.

"We are very concerned that an institution like McGill has taken the hypocritical stance of creating an AIDS centre with­ out having adopted a comprehensive AIDS policy for its own staff and students," LAGEM President Robert Head said.

"McGill should practise what it researches."

According to Head, the commi ttee has not yet decided which pressure tactics will be used, bu t he is confident that McGill will listen to the committee.

"With McGill finding itself under public scrutiny, it may very well reverse its position."

FEEQ seeks access to fee hike decision The provincial Access to Information Tribunal will decide this Friday whether or not to force the Executive Committee of the provincial government to release details of last year's deci­ sion to raise tuition fees.

The Fédération des étudiantes et étudiants du Québec (FEEQ) wants to see the decision in order to prepare its court case challenging the fee hike. One of FEEQ's claims is that the fee hike is illegal because despite its far reaching consequences, it was only made through an Order-in- council, and not through an act of the legislature.

"It affects 300,000 people, but nobody knows how the deci­ sion came about," FEEQ VP-Undergraduate Affairs Robert Fabes said.

MACES represents 15,000 - 17,000 students but does not have a seat on BoG.

BY DAVE MESSENGER Despite a previous offer to form a Post Graduate Students' Society (PGSS) and Students' Society of McGill University (SSMU) joint committee to dis­ cuss future relations between the two groups, SSMU Presi­ dent Kate Morisset announced at last week's Council meeting that the committee formation is currently on hold.

Morisset cited "the inability (of herself and PGSS President Michael Temelini) to reach agreement on a neutral chair" as the reason for the delay of the committee formation.

In addition, Morisset and Temelini cannot agree on the issue of holding a campus-wide referendum concerning PGSS secession from SSMU.

Temelini strongly requests that such a referendum be held and questions why such a course of action is not currently underway.

"Why was there no delay in SSMU holding a referendum on an issue that no one knows anything about, but graduate students must wait ?" Temelini asked referring to the referen­ dum concerning McGill mem­ bership in the Fédération des étudiantes et étudiants de Québec to be held next week.

Morisset emphasized that a referendum would not neces­ sarily be the "ultimate goal of any committee. There has not been any sort of agreement (regarding a referendum), nor have we agreed on any sort of focus or direction (for the com­ mittee)," Morisset said.

Temelini characterized the delay in the committee forma­ tion as," typical" SSMU stall­ ing and demanded a plan of action from Council.

"I want to know if there is a will to deal with this issue," Temelini said.

According to SSMU-VP De­ borah Pentesco, Council is unwilling to begin negotiations under hostile pretences.

"As an execu tive we were not elected with a mandate to form this committee ... (the delay is because) we want to start on very healthy grounds."

Ironically, Morisset's an­ nouncement followed Coun­ cil's approval of a motion rec­ ognizing PGSS's 1989 referen­ dum results in which 96% of the 35% voter tumou t favoured secession. □

Environmental promises a part of pre-election package The Canadian Environment Network's annual conference looked like it was to be the major environmentalist event in a busy week for the green of mind in Montréal. The confer­ ence was intended to allow people from various environmental groups across the nation to exchange information and increase awareness in the community at large. Yet another chance to talk about how much must be/can be/ is being done to save our fragile planet.

When what did our wondering eyes behold but a startling initiative from City Hall. Pre­ election fever must have taken hold in a major way for the Montréal Citizen's Coalition, currently in power, has initiated a new policy by which parking will be taxed at a rate of onedollar per-spot-per-day.

The path of the environmentalist future has always been the path of economic incentive.

Telling a polluter or a logger or a smoker or an excess packager to stop for the good of the planet has simply not proved to be an effective tactic. Simple legislation seems to exist as an inconvenience but an ineffective barrier to those whose fortune depends on environ­ mental malpractise.

The way to effect genuine environmental reform has got to be at the apparently visceral level of sheer economics: making an action too expensive to carry on by charging the person responsible the full cost to society of an envi­ ronmentally unfriendly action. And ideally, diverting revenues raised through these means towards preventing or repairing environ­ mental damage.

The City of Montréal has done just that to deal with the ecologically unsound practise of driving in the down town core. By taxing parking spots they are counting on those who

run parking lots charging more to their customers: the city is already doing that with city-run meters.

The tax will make it more expensive to drive downtown, which is exactly (please forgive me if anyone reading this is dependent for income on a downtown gas station) the way that things should be.

There is no need to drive in the downtown core: cars increase pollution, increase road maintenance costs, and make life less much pleasant for pedestrians and cyclists. They already cost a ridiculous amount to run, besides. And we do have a fairly advanced public transit system.

Revenues from the tax are going to improv­ ing the STCUM: maybe buses will come more often, or go more places, or maybe the fares will not increase quite as often.

Pleasing as this public policy development is, the city could go further to make driving downtown as anachronistic economically as it is ecologically.

By merely continuing this trend, our streets could be free of almost all cars, and current road maintenance expenditures could be used to make public transit free.

I'm not sure that any government is likely to take such radical steps at any time other than in the perceived heat of an election race. The next time around, citizens should be ready to push this issue further. And there are are only nineteen more shopping days til the municipal election. Environmental, educational, and social wish lists should be presented to candi­ dates as forcibly as possible. If changes like this keep up, tis indeed the season to be jolly.

Your Majesty: Think of me for a moment as one of your Canadian min­ isters with a bit of advice.

This advice is already 123 years late, so let's skip over the Governor General this time.

I advise you to take your name out of our Members of Parliament's oath.

That single act is likely to bring us closer to a unique Canadian democracy than anything else our national leaders have done so far.

The oath is, first of all, no compliment to you. In fact, having Canadian MPs swear an oath to a woman who lives 4000 miles away and who, through no fault of her own, can visit us for less than one week a year makes your crown something of a joke here.

But the official importance of a false oath is a tremen­ dous slight to those of us who pay taxes here, the ones actually affected by MPs sworn in to your name. It means that officially, respon­ sible government - that is government responsible to us, rather than to you - becomes something to be hidden when rookie MPs take their seats.

Yes, your Majesty, it is true that Canadian MPs must ulti­ mately pay greater homage to the court of public opinion than to your Royal Court. But I am afraid 1 can't dismiss the oath - or your face on my stamps and money - as an anachronsitic triviality.

The spirit of your crown continues to underpin Can­ ada's daily political agenda.

The spirit is a belief in unity, in the supremacy of central government, in the idea of a common good. Canadians believe those ideas are as benign as you are. Your presence in our public life

P arts o f Speech ROBERT STEINER distracts us from dealing with the problems those ideas have caused.

Why does our unity exist, for instance? When the concept of Canadian unity first arose, it was to protect Britain's agricultural ma­ chine in Canada from the United States. That was the time, you'll remember, when your Great-Great Grandmother made Austra­ lia into Empire's wool machine and South Africa into Empire's gold machine.

I doubt Canadians shared any identity then. We cannot grasp the Canadian identity that does exist now. because it is not appropriate to the political philosophy developed under your crown. We believe in our­ selves as individuals first and then as members of close-knit groups. We are Easterners or Westerners, Francophones, Anglo­ phones or otherly ethnics, we are Northerners or Southerners, Natives or Whites or Blacks or Browns.

But the political system created in your name, by MPs who swore allegience to you, compels us to pre­ tend that we are all the same under your crown. That, your majesty, is behind most of Canada's anger and current instability. We would probably be more confident individuals if we knew the groups in which we live are respected, rather than ignored for a foreign idea of homogeneity.

In other words, your maj­ esty, I will advise you to suggest to your ministers that they not be angry with Mr. Duceppe. They should certainly not ask him to swear another false oath to your name.

They should thank him for reminding them that Canada's political philoso­ phy must be altered to accept what is true to this country.

Your Majesty, I thought your Empire had sorted these things out with most of the world already. But if I sound like some frustrated colonial rebel, at least history puts me in good company.

I will blame my complaceny, rather than your post office, for this letter's late arrival.

T o the editor: As co-organizer of the "Truth and Consequences" Sympo­ sium, I remembered to thank the speakers who participated, the group of volunteers w ho helped make the symposium a success... but more importantly, I forgot to thank the ath­ letes.

Am on g other things, it is so hard to be an athlete in today's society amidst the confusion of Performance Enhancing Drugs. Does a level playing field really exist? Are most of the professional athletes in the w orld really on Performance Enhancing Drugs? In 1979, Angella Issajenko, was 7th in the w orld yet she was considered a dissapointing 7th b y the media. A n d she was clean. Angella also knew that all her rivals w ho were getting contracts and appearing on Tim e Magazine were most probably using Performance Enhanc­ ing Drugs. Angella saw that she had two choices, to join her heroes or to be satisfied with being clean knowing that she w ould never be number one in the world.

When the symposium was put together, it was never our intention to chastise athletes or to dictate to M cG ill athletes not to use Performance Enhancing Drugs. The purpose ws to educate both athletes and society. Both have to make de­ cisions. W e saw from both Angella Issajenko and Ben Johnson that athletes have to decide whether or not they w ill use Performance Enhancing Drugs. But weas a society must also make a decision. If we really want Canada to be clean then we must be ready to accept 3rd, 7th, and 10th place finishes. We cannot continue to push our athletes to w in at all costs. We must applaud their achievements if they compete clean.

So to all athletes, especially M cG ill athletes, we applaud your commitment and efforts and encourage you to choose what is best for your future.

T o the Editor-in-Chief: In your recent editorial, you raise several concerns regarding Principal Johnston's address to the joint meet­ ing of the Senate and the Board of Governors, and the Preliminary Re­ port of the Task Force on Priorities of M cG ill. W e offer this comment to respond to the reservations you ex­ pressed regarding the "EliteM odel."

N o one denies that M cG ill has con­ tinued to maintain its international reputation in the face of severe un­ der-funding. It is equally obvious that its ability to do so is increasingly bei ngimperiledbyalackof resources.

In fact, M cG ill has undergone a $28 m illion (13 percent) reduction in annual operating income over the past twelve years. D uring this time, full­ time enrolment increased by 18.5% A n urgent need exists to address this crisis now. Look around you. In several Faculties, students must sit on the floors in their lectures due to increasing class sizes. Often, there arebutahandful of T A s for hundreds of students. The problem is not one of effort on the part of our teaching staff.

In your editorial, you did not seem to have grasped the reasons for over­ crowding. There are several. First, between 1982 and 1986, the Québec government operated a funding pol­ icy for universities which awarded artificially high high enrolments. Sec­ ondly, M cG ill has an accumulated deficit of over $63 million. There is no

money to increase faculty/ student and TA /student ratios. Th ird ly, M cGill does not have the physical resources to handle this many students.

The Task Force Report addresses these issues, with a view to solving them within reasonable financial con­ straints, and to upholding its mission.

The Mission of M cGill, as stated in the Report, is the Advancement of Learn­ ing through teaching, scholarship, and community service. In order to fulfil its mandate, M cG ill has proposed that undergraduate enrolment be reduced, to ensure that those w ho do choose to study here receive a first class educa­ tion. This is not a move to an elite university, but to a manageable one.

The issue of access to higher educa­ tion remains a prime concern of the SSM U. W e feel that admission to an institution of higher learningshould be based on merit alone, as opposed to fi­ nancial well-being. Therefore, the re­ duced enrolments must not pose a barrier to students with financial need.

However, it is our fear that the demo­ graphics of the university might be altered by this decision, should no compensatory measures be taken.

The administration has taken one point of view. It is true that in the words of Principal Johnston, "tuition can be considered a solution to under-fund­ ing." Tobe fair, he proceeded toqualify this statement, by noting that access w ould certainly be impeded in the absence of a concomitant increase in

loans and bursaries.

The SSM U has taken another ap­ proach. In concert with F EEQ , we have proposed a post-graduate tax to re­ place tuition fees for all university students. In addition, we continue to lobby for loans and bursaries reform provincially.

Within the university, the SSM U has criticized M cG ill for not allocating enough money towards financial aid.

We continue to pressure the A d m in i­ stration on Senate to meet its financial commitment to offset the impact of increased tuition. Moreover, we moni­ tor the efficient allocation of resources, with a view to ensuring a better qual­ ity education.

The Report is a short-term solution to a long-term problem. "The Task Force was charged to articulate uni­ versity policies for the next three to five years" (Preface). The SSM U has not abandoned the ideal of increasing resources to accommodate all quali­ fied candidates. Through our repre­ sentative on the Task Force, SSM U President Kate Morriset, we feel we have accomplished an important goal: to try to improve the quality of our education in a realistic way.

After a year of turmoil for Québec university students, former Education Minister Claude Ryan is moving to the Public Security ministry.

Robillard will deal with the aftermath of tuition fee in­ creases.

Hated by students and praised by university admin­ istrators, Ryan presided over last year's historic raise in tuition fees. After twenty years of frozen fees, the Bourassa government raised tuition by 120% over two years. Seven thousand post­ secondary students marched in the streets of downtown Montreal last spring to protest the "dégel", while university administrators applauded the new policy.

McGill's Board of Governors passed the increase without a problem (except for the sound of chants from stu­ dents demonstrating out­ side). Principal David Johnston had lobbied for the increase.

Neither the students nor the administrators know what to expect from Robil­ lard. She has had a low profile, especially when compared to Ryan. Her background is in social serv­ ices and she spent last year as Minister of Cultural Affairs. She has no political experience in higher educa­ tion.

Neither students nor ad­ ministrators expect a radical change in policy from Robil­ lard.

David Bourke, McGill's Secretary-General, also pointed out that "the Minis­ try of Higher Education and Science is a very welldeveloped ministry. All the deputy ministers...will still be there. They are the people [we] deal with."

But there is still some hope for the student cause.

When Robillard became Public Curator for Québec's mental health patients in De­ cember 1986, she also inher­ ited a controversial portfo­ lio. At that time, she told the Montreal Gazette that the protection of human rights was her first priority. Per­ haps she will bring the same attitude to her new portfolio.

Student groups hope that Robillard's lack of experi­ ence in the education arena will be an asset. Fédération des étudiantes et étudiants du Québec President Nicolas Plourde said Ryan's strong connections to education and expertise may have made him "closed to new ideas" and implied a more objective approach was needed.

"We hope that she will be more open than Mr. Ryan," Plourde said.

BY M ARISA ANTONAYA Student groups that pass fee increases through student ref­ erenda will now have to wait up to six months before collect­ ing any funds, following a series of resolutions passed by the President's Council last week.

Retroactive fee referenda are student-initiated fee changes that come into immediate ef­ fect to include the semester during which the referendum is held.

Last spring, University Reg­ istrar Robert Schuller proposed the abolition of retroactive stu­ dents' society fee increases and the implementation of a man­ datory one-year waiting period before any increase come into effect. This one year waiting period would allow enough time for the fee change to be included in faculty calendars and the fee schedule.

The Council's resolutions abolish referenda which in­

crease fees retroactively. How­ ever, the Council rejected the recommendation of a one year delay for fee changes.

The Presidents' Council re­ jected the delay recommenda­ tion on the grounds that such a delay would hinder students' societies' ability to represent and serve their students.

According to a document submitted by Political Research Officer Robert Fabes to SSMU concerning the proposal, retro­ active fee changes are "an adm inistrative nightm are" because they "must be handled manually".

In ter-F ratern ity Council President Jai Marshall believes that retroactive fee payments are cumbersome to students as well as administrators.

She cited the example of a student unable to receive a copy of his or her transcript because of a two dollar outstanding student fee due to a retroactive fee referendum.

"Retroactive fee increases are

a b o lis h e d inconvenient to students too," Marshall said. "As student rep­ resentatives, we should ap­ prove policies which we feel are beneficial to the students."

But Post Graduate Students' Society President Michael Temelini had reservations about the decision.

"Referenda are one of the ways that students practice their democratic rights," Temelini said. "I get worried when democratic practices are sacri­ ficed for bureaucratic reasons."

"I was willing to go along with the decision of the Presi­ dents' Council (to abolish fee increase referenda) because it (the Council) is a good tool (for students) and consensus is the proper way of proceeding."

McGill Association of Con­ tinuing Education Students Presidentjim Osborn was sym­ pathetic towards Temelini's concerns but stated students' societies must also be "realistic in their expec­ tations." □

Increased reports of sexual harassment attributed to increased awareness

BY TARA BEAL The number of people who are reporting sexual harassment has increased every year since 1986. That may not be a sign of increased incidents but of increased awareness.

Sexual harassment is defined by the Charter of Student Rights as a "display, by word or by deed, of sexual attentions towards another individual or group of individuals, of a nature which may reasonably be considered to be vexacious or abusive."

With the help of an assessor the victim can simply discuss the alleged case, confront the harasser in an informal manner such as a letter from the assessor, or file a formal complaint.

The Legal Information Clinic helps some students who do not know what is their best recourse.

Some students approach them in preference to the assessors for fear that when they use the University's mechanism, they will lose control of the process.

"Filing a complaint can be intimidating," acknowledged Deborah Pentesco, SSMU VP (University Affairs). "Many students think 'its' out of my hands.' But in fact you direct where it goes." There is no obligation to file a complaint after speaking to an assessor.

Another fear of many students is, in subtler cases of harassment, that they will be accused of overinterpreting a situation.

"A big factor in my decision to report my lab demonstrator was the fact I had heard about him making passes at other people. If there had not been other com plaints of this person harassing other students, I thought the assessors would have said 'Oh, well you're just overeacting', " said one woman who approached the ombuds­ man about harassment.

BY PROMA TAGORE Apparently most students are unaware of one of the few people here at McGill whose job it is to listen to individual complaints or difficulties in dealing with the unsympathetic and uncompliant bureaucratic structure known as the University.

Annette Werk, the student's ombudsman, is consulted by only about 150 students per year, some of whom she only sees once. The cases are most often academic ones - students having trouble having a paper reread, or a student who has been asked to withdraw from a program.

"They're mainly cases when the student feels just stuck, stuck in the bureaucracy."

For the past two years, Werk has been unsuccessful in having an article she wrote printed in the student handbook, which she feels is a key to student awareness . She is frustrated at the SSMU'slack of cooperation

in this matter. "1 think its really important that the Students' Society, who pays part of my salary and to whom I am therefore responsible, pushes my presence."

Another problem Werk has encountered as ombudsman is unwillingness and stubbomess of the facuties and departments to consider student's cases seriously. In one case she, "tried to intervene, tried to point out tha t the student really had a good case, and the department or faculty w as totally unwilling.

[The students] went to Legal Aid and won their case," Werk said.

These problems and the lack of awareness on the part of the student body can be attributed, in part, to the newness of the position. The ombudsman was only first appointed as a neutral arbitrator by the Board of

Governors four years ago.

The ombudsman acts as an agent for the students, investigating student's concerns, complaints, or problems with either the staff, the faculty, or the administration.

Her mandate is to help students to avoid long, drawnout grievance procedures by means of simpler negotiation.

"My job is first of all to be avail­ able to students, to listen to them, and then investigate their

complaints."

Werk also analyzes already existing rules and regulations, makes necessary recommenda­ tions regarding policy, and fi­ nally ensures that the university follows its own rules. □

Not informing security of campus incidents may allow them to recur

BY B. PENNER Two weeks ago at 11:00 in the evening, three female McGill students were walking home across campus from GerLs. As they passed by the Redpath Museum, they noticed a man standing by himself near the steps. He stared and smiled at them as they approached. It took them a few seconds to realise that he was masturbating.

"W e were com pletely shocked," recalled one student.

"It was so blatant. There were three of us, lots of people arou nd and this man was standing di­ rectly under the lights doing his thing. We screamed and ran - 1 know it's a stupid reaction, but we didn't know what else to do."

Incidents of this sort are not common at McGill but they do occur. Few students know how to react to such a situation - where to go or whom to call.

O'Neil was shocked at the fact there is only one foot patroller on campus at any time of night, and that lighting is consistently inadequate across campus.

Five Security Phones have been installed on campus over the past year expressly for emergency calls. The red metal boxes are mounted outdoors and are marked MCGILL EMERGENCY HELP. Although they were designed to be highly visible, students must know their location in advance in order to use the service effectively.

"I don't know where a single one of the security phones on campus is located. I didn't even know there were any," said Jes­ sica McBride, a member of Walk-

Safe Network.

By con trast, the University of Chicago has an emergency phone on every hundred square feet of campus. They guarantee response to a call in thirty seconds or fewer. Response at McGill to an incident reported in September took in excess of thirty minutes.

"We need and value imput from students," says Dalebozic. "Security at McGill cannot be handled by our agents alone - the thirty thousand McGill students play a big part in keeping the campus safe."

BY STEVE KOKKER Midterms are among us, like a nasty itch grown to fungal proportions, buta balance must be achieved lest we turn into pure-bred, parochial academes.

The perfect escape is afoot.

Since 1971, the International Festival of New Film and Video has been the major showcase for alternative cinema in Mon­ tréal. As diverse as all of Mon­ treal's genre-specific festivals put together, yet taking more risks than the World Film Festi­ val, this 11-day event has been gaining in popularity every year. Last year, over 50 000 fans attended.

In the past, it has served as a forum for subversive new tal­ ent, and has hosted visits by such luminaries as Jean-Luc

Godard, Spike Lee, Jim Jar­ musch and Stan Brackage.

One of the biggest events in this year's fest will be A1 Pacino in person at the world premiere of a true labour of love,The Local Stigmatic. He starred in the film, essentially a one act play on celluloid. The uncommercial nature of the work makes it unlikely ever to resurface. It plays only once, at the Rialto on Oct. 26.

The festival is opening with the world premiere of Québec director Gilles Carle's Le diable d’Amérique. 180 films and vid­ eos from 28 countries will fol­ low, including a special cate­ gory of 30 films examining the plight of native people around the world. From the wacky Pow Wow Highway to two films on Tibetan culture and numerous

works focusing on North American Indians, this collec­ tion promises to be as interest­ ing as it is timely.

In the past, the Fes­ tival has served as a forum for subversive new talent, and has hosted visits by such luminaries as JeanLuc Godard, Spike Lee, Jim Jarmusch and Stan Brackage.

The commi tment tonewcinema is carried through to an exami­ nation of current events. The exceptional organization of the festival allows it to showcase 16

recent films about the opening up of the Eastern Bloc. The new cinema of Austria will also be highlighted.

Of interest to Peter Greena­ way fans, creator of the the controversial and disappoint­ ing The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover, are two new videos by this unpredictable talent. Death in the Seine exam­ ines the many dro wnings in the famous river during the French Revolution (I can not wait to see what he does with that theme) and Dante's Inferno, the first episode in a made-for-British-TV series called A TV Dante.

Other entries of note include Paulus Manker's Weininger's Last Night, a true story about a Jewish philosopher who shot himself at the age of 23 in what was Beethoven's bedroom,

Chocolat director Claire Denis' latest, facques Rivette, and Raul Ruiz' The Golden B oat. Patricia Rozema's Wve Heard the Mer­ maids Singing ) latest work,The White Room, and Scenes from the Life of Andy Warhol by Ameri­ can independent film pioneer Jonas Mekas have also gener­ ated much anticipation.

Advance tickets are available at the Cinémathèque Québé­ coise until Oct 18, the first day of the Festival. Afterwards tick­ ets will be on sale at the location of the particu lar screening. Like last year, showings will be held at the Rialto, Cinémathèque Québécoise, Cinema Parallèle and the Goethe Institute.

That term paper will get done eventually, but you will proba­ bly never get to see these films again... □

No fond welcome in order for tedious Roxy Carmichael

BY ADAM STERNBERGH It is a rare movie that is blessed by a glimmer of origi­ nality and intelligence. When that film is hopelessly encum­ bered by a witless script, le­ thargic acting and sparkless directing, one is left little alter­ native but to sigh and skulk home from the theatre, once again drained by an evening of typical Hollywood tedium.

W elcom e H om e, Roxy Carmichael is such a movie. The premise is promising. Dinky Bosetti (Winona Ryder) is a misunderstood misfit in the decidedly un-hip town of Clyde, Ohio. She, along with her fellow Clydians, anxiously awaits the triumphant return of Ms. Carmichael.

Roxy is Clyde's native celeb­ rity, who found fame and for­ tune after abandoning her small town roots. Denton Webb (Jeff Daniels) is the love Roxy left

behind, and he has been unable to shake her spell during her fifteen year absence. This po­ tential examination of star worship has definite possibili­ ties. Unfortunately, screen­ writer Karen Leigh Hopkins and director Jim Abrahams chose to explore none of them.

N ow is the time to stop this cycle.

Please, do not go see this movie.

Art and ecology are united in the exhibition Savoir-Vivre, Savoir-Faire, Savoir-Etre at the Centre International d'ArtContemporain. This exhibit features the work of twentysix artists from several nations, all of who are aiming to arouse conciousness and inspire ac­ tion towards improving the environment.

The exhibition displays a wide variety of contemporary art forms including video, photography, sculpture and illuminated plastics. Ecology may be understood in a social, environmental or mental con­ text: the diverse forms rein­ force the variety of interpreta­ tions.

What does ecological con­ ciousness mean? All the works clearly express one theme: a need for shared peace.

American artist Jimmie Dur­ ham expresses his social con­ cerns in a one room, mixedmedia display, The Illustrated Bible or Alexander von Humbolt and Karl Marx Tour the Ameri­ cas . Durham's focus is on culture: what it was and what it has become. He creates bold images by juxtaposition. Tumof-the-century photos of Na­ tive heritage are mixed with a series of pictures showing a

German artist Joseph Beuys' images are clear and uncompli­ cated with straight-forward messages that are often star­ tling. The artist's exhibit Hare’s Blood, consists of nothing more than a framed bag of an ani­ mal's blood specimen. The artistic merit of Beuys' work is its ability to provoke a reaction.

the eruption of metal frag­ ments, rusted, old, and un­ identifiable, on the smooth surface. At the foot of each panel rests a small table and a rock bearing an uncanny re­ semblance toa stripped-down tomb stone.

Goodwin's piece is a pow­ erful reference to the dangers of abusing the earth. The art­ ist becomes somewhat secon­ dary to the creative process by allowing the magnetic potential of the materials to direct the work. The attrac­ tion and repulsion of the material sor each other guide the result by a natural force which is as powerful as her own artistic ability.

Artists like Beuys and Robert Filliou have spent a lifetime trying to arouse pub­ lic concern about ecological values. Now, many younger artists slowly are becoming aware that the art object can be a manifestation of how to live, what to do and what we can be.

Savoir-Faire, Savoir-Vivre, Savoir-Etre, is being exhibited at the Centre D’art Contempo­ rain de Montreal, 3576 avenue de Parc. The show runs until October 28 and the admission price is $3.50 for students or $5.00 without a card. □

includes having collaborated with David and Jerry Zucker to create "Airplane", director Jim Abrahams brings nothing to this film. There is a definite category for his ilk in filmworld.

He is a Hollywood insider with enough clou t to whine his way into thedirec tor's chair, but not enough talent to survive there.

Normally, a movie of such notable mediocrity would rake in decent money in its first few weekends, and then fade from the memory of an apathetic movie going public. Now is the time to stop this cycle. Please, do not go see this movie. Not just because 11is a waste of time and money,butbecause as long as the Welcome Home, Roxy Carmichaels and the Mr. Destinys and other such smegma keep making money, Holly­ wood will keep making these movies. It's time to send the message that the paying au­ dience wants, and deserves, more.

BY BRENT BANNERMAN The McGill Redmen Hockey Team embark on their 1990 - 91 season with many questions left unanswered. The loss of All stars Tim Iannone, Alain Cus­ son and Jamie Reeve has left people wondering just how the team will fare this season.

Offensively, the loss of Tim

"Every game we're in is going to be a battle" -Coach Jean Pronovost Iannone will hurt Red men goal production since he averaged a goal per game over his four year career. The inablity to recruit a high impact forward, such as last year's rookie sensation Patrice Tremblay, has left the Redmen looking towards vet­ erans to provide added scoring punch.

"I think what we lost in Timmy, the other people will raise their goal output such as

Martin Raymond, PatriceTremblay and Paul Grech," said Jean Pronovost, who takes over as the Redmen Head Coach after two seasons as former coach A1 Grazy's assistant.

The most threatening offen­ sive newcomer could be Marco Parenteau whom Pronovost calls "a Jean Râtelle kind of player". Rookies Kai Joslin and Martin Hayden have been pleasant surprises for the McGill coaching staff.

Defensively the recruiting went much better as Pronovost added a coupleof two hundred pound blueliners to plug the leak All-star Alain Cusson graduated. One new rookie defenseman is Dan Fowler who attended the training camp of the NHL's St. Louis Blues this fall. The other is Todd Hanrahahn. Both should be able to contribute to the Redmen suc­ cess immediately. Combine the rooks with All-star Bryan Larkin and the three steadies, Ky 1er Smi th, Paul Pulver, Chris Packer and the Redmen defence looks damn good.

The most ominous question facing the Redmen is their man between the pipes. All-star goalie Jamie Reeve is no longer

Second half house of horrors for McGill football team

BY PAUL COLEMAN Saturday afternoon a t Loyola Sports Complex, the Concor­ dia Stingers staged a 27-15 come-from-behind victory over the McGill Redmen to capture the Fourth Annual Montreal Shrine Bowl. A colourful and spirited crowd of 3500 was on hand to gleefully endure in­ clement weather while witness­ ing Concordia's premier Shrine Bowl triumph. Endurance paid substantial dividends in the second half as Concordia tallied 27 unanswered points to overtake McGill.

As per usual, the fez-infested Shriner halftime show was tons 'o' fun, in spite of the rain that picked up and carried over into the second half.

Offensively, the Redmen adhered to a conservative agenda throughout the day.

Runningback Marc Thiffeault trudged through the mud 25 times accumulating 91 tough rushing yards. Conversely, Concordia paid attention to the rainy skies, tenuring a passoriented game plan piloted by fourth year pivot Ron Aboud.

The match up of crosstown rivals vying for a coveted city title, and a playoff berth coupled with the juxtaposition of dispa­ rate game strategies, laid the groundwork for sixty minutes of intense football. But disap­ pointment was the motif for the better part of the game. The McGill Redmenyetagain failed to stay in front for the duration following a healthy mid-game lead; a problem that has plagued the team this year, and plays a major factor in McGill's dismal 1-4 season record.

"This is the third game now that this has happened after

being up by at least a touch­ down. Inside the dressing room it's the same every time. We think we're going to win, we come out intense, thenblow it." commented halfback Robert Taylor.

Yanik Préfontaine had his own thoughts on the game.

"I think we used to be a sec­ ond half team, but now it feels like every time we get ahead the offense si ts back and lets the defense carry the game."

Accordingly, McGill came out strong to start the game.

women's teams in Canada are non-contact. "Playing noncontact doesn't take a lot away from w om en's hockey, ' claims the Martlet center.

"Depending on the ref, it al­ lows the freewheeler to free­ wheel, and puts more empha­ sis on stick work.

Caan compares the noncontact game to minor league boys' hockey. '“A lot of women's sports are rough, but the women are able to take it. What's more, they're willing and ready to play rough."

This attitude is what may take McGill to the finals this year. Caan predicts that the Martlets will give their strong Concordia rivals a good match, and do much better overall than last year.

Since Canadian women won the world hockey cham­ pionships last year, more at­ tention is being paid to a sport which is largely considered a man's domain. "[The championship] made people say, 'Of course, women play hockey to o ,'" says katnryn Morrison, a threeyear veteran, and last season's captain. "N ow a lot of women's sports are coming into their prime, and (Canadi­ ans are) winning, which helps."

Morrison has been playing hockey for eight years, incluaing three in a men's full-con­ tact league. Virtually all the

Morrison's playing and spirit are some of those strengths, and she sees the same drive among her teammates. Because only half the team is made up of returning players, the Martlets

may be lacking in experience.

But Morrison believes the club "has a lot of girls who want to work hard, and a very good coach. We really needed some­ one new, to keep up the pro­ gression that's been going on for the last three years."

Caan, in fact, volunteered to coach the Markets because he loves the game. A studen t in his final year of Economics, the

former Redmen football player says coaching hockey is not a big time commitment.

H like being around the game, and I think all of us will have a strong year. We're going to make Martlets hockey a game people flock to watch."

It is about time that fan sup­ port increases. Morrison recalls now one year the Martlets won the league championship, and only to be omitted from fund­ ing.

[The administration] just said 'Thanks for doing the job, but there just isn't going to be any more money.'"

It was hard to re-establish the team after that blow. McGill women played clubhockey and exhibition games until funding wasresumed. "We'veonlybeen serious for about five years," says Morrison," but we get more recognition as time goes on. This should be our best year yet."

The Martlets hockey team opens its season October 27th against John Abbott in a 7:30 p.m. home game.

Recognition doesn't come easy for the McGill Women's Rugby Football Club. They are a team with a provincial title, lots of determination but no home.

All of their games are played on the road and last Sunday took them to Murray Hill Park (where the hell is .Murray Hill Park) in Westmount, a veritable rugby hotbed, to be sure.

They were there for a double tilt against the John Abbott Islanders, a peren­ nial contender, and this season's powerhouse, the Concordia Stingers.

The results of the after­ noon of rugger could be termed as disappointing since McGill came away winless in tying Abbott at 0 in a game they should have won and going down to Concordia 10-0. But the time I spent there was en­ lightening.

These players are tough.

"I guess I nave an aggres­ sive side that comes out when I'm on the field," said Martlet wing, Michelle Walter.

That "aggressive side" was plainly evident when she smacked an oncoming John Abbott player punisningly into the dirt. After a scant moment to regain her breath, she was right back in the action. It was tne kind of tackle that made you wish she played for the Redmen football team.

A tougher challenge for the Martlets has been getting recognition. Not only of their team but their sport.

There is some hope, tnough.

"I think it's changing now," said prop, Kariann Aarup. "I think the sport is becoming much more recognized. We take it seriously and we practise hard."

"Rugby in Canada isn't well known first of all," offered Eight Man, Anne Coyle. "The Rugby Federa­ tion is extremely unorgan­ ized in Quebec. It's not hockey."

Without doubt, the fact the team has no home field does not ameliorate this condi­ tion. The men's team suffers from the same fate.

McGill has only one good field and that's Molson Sta­ dium. There, the surface is astroturf which is not condu­ cive to the game of rugby.

All McGill's other fields have been turned into their annual quagmires by non­ stop intramural play.

Consequently, the teams have to wonder around playing in anonymity at various pitches across Mon­ treal and elsewhere.

Undaunted, the team continues to plug away heading to an almost certain clash with the Stingers for the provincial title on No­ vember 4th. The Stingers are a team bolstered by some of the top players who gradu­ ated from Abbott (the only team to beat McGill last season), as well as a player from Canada's national team.

One highlight of the year will be the team's trip to England and Wales in Febru ary. ’'It's what's keeping us in school," joked fullback, Linda Miller.

In order to raise money for the voyage the team will be selling t-shirts and is think­ ing o f running an NFL pool.

They've already sold boxer shorts.

Coca-cola has sponsored the shirts they are to give as gifts on the tour and tne team is also working on sponsorship with Molson for tneir jerseys.

In tne meantime, the McGill WRFC will continue onwards in their quest for a second provincial title. If they lose, it won't be for a lack of trying.

go to any of the remaining teams. Only Queen's and RMC don't have strong programmes.

Both U of T and Ottawa's hockey programs are on the rise, and while Concordia'sprogram is a couple years behind, they too are making vast improve­ ments. McGill's chore - and Coach Pronovost's - is to keep pace with these clubs or we could find ourselves in fifth or sixth spot in the division.

As coach Pronovost put it, "every game we're in is going to be a battle."

If Redmen defence can keep the heat off goaltender Allen and the team rem ains . disciplined,they should be able to finish at least fourth. □

It could be the case thatMcGill adhered too strongly to the ground game, and that a more diversified playbook Saturday would have benefitted the team.
