ondary tax and taking the pro­ vincial government to court in light of the ongoing tuition fee increases. PGSS is not entirely sure they support the FEEQ platform. Joining FEEQ would cost each student an extra $2 a year. a

According to McGill Blood Drive CoordinatorTina Harriet, the organizational end of the blood drive was well executed, but the desired number of donors "just didn't show up."

"There arc nca rly 30,000 people a t McG ill .Ididn'tthink tha t 3(KX) pints was an unrealistic goal," Harriet said. "Our other goal was to get lots of first time donors out, and while we did get some, a lot of people just couldn't be bothered or were too afraid (to donate)."

Ryan le a v e s a m id m ix e d re v ie w s Student leaders and professors have mixed reactions to last Friday's removal of former Education Minister Claude Ryan.

"I'm glad that Ryan is gone," VP-External Affairs Alex Usher said. "He wouldn't even talk to students."

"The fact that there's a new education minister gives us a chance to deal with someone who hopefully does not have as many preconceived notions about the student movement."

But Dean of Engineering P.R. Belanger is "disappointed to lose Mr Ryan" because "he was terrific at responding to indi­ viduals'concerns."

Ryan has become the province's Public Security Minister.

The- new Minister of Higher Education is Lucienne Robillard.

Belanger expressed surprise that "a more senior minister" was not chosen.

The Women's Union has convinced the Students' Soci­ ety (SSMU) executive to try to amend the SSMU Constitution rather than let men become members of the Union.

The insertion of an affimativeaction clause into the SSMU Consitution may also allow the Walk-Safe Network and the McGill Association of Interna­ tional Students (MAIS) to have their constitutions ratified and become eligible for SSMU funding.

'The Executive has commit­ ted itself to preparing an amendment to the constitution with full consultation," SSMU President Kate Morisset said.

SSMU executive will present a motion to Council within the next several weeks calling for a referendum to amend the con­ stitution. If Council agrees to the referendum, students will vote on the addition of an af­ firmative action clause next spring.

A McGill member of the Fédération des étudiantes et étudiants du Québec (FEEQ) ex­ ecutive resigned from his post yesterday, two weeks before McGill will hold a referendum to decide whether or not to join the student organization.

Eric Darier, former FEEQ VPGraduate Affairs, cited the "in­ transigence of SSMU" as his reason for resigning.

Darier, who is still the PostGraduate Students' Society's (PGSS) Representative toCouncil, resigned from FEEQ after Council refused Darier's re­ quest tha t grad ua te studen ts be exempted from the upcoming referendum.

Even though Darier was on the FEEQ executive, he wanted graduate students excluded from the referendum, which is scheduled for October 23-25.

PGSS is a member of the Reroupement des associations es cycles supérieurs du Québec (RACSQ), which will decide in January whether or not to join FEEQ. Darier wanted graduate students excluded From FEEQ "at least temporar­ ily", pending RACSQ's deci­ sion.

"The SSMU should respect the right to decide for ourselves and be more tuned to the real­ ity of grad politics in Québec," Darier said.

SSMU Council refused to exclude PGSS from the FEEQ

referendum because SSMU has a mandate to represent all stu­ dents at McGill.

"We have no choice: our constitution says that we can't defranchise a quarter of our ulation without a vote," er said.

In response to Council's re­ fusal to exclude them from the referendum, graduate students formed a "No" Committee to campaign against SSMU join­ ing FEEQ. PGSS asked Darier to resign from FEEQ because it did not want FEEQ to benefit from having a graduate repre­ sentative and contact.

The decision to form a "No" Committee also stems from a history of poor relations be­ tween SSMU and PGSS. Two PGSS-sponsored referenda held in the past three years showed that 96% of graduate students supported secession from SSMU. As a result, PGSS refuses to recognize SSMU as its representative to FEEQ. "The creation of a "No" Committee is a direct result of SSMU refusing to acknowledge the referenda," Darier said.

"They refuse to let us go and it7s creating a lot of tension."

"It is a knee jerk reaction," responded SSMU VP-Extemal Alex Usher. "If the (FEEQ) ref­ erendum dosesn't go through then they will lose their voice too. They're hurting themselves in the long run."

Taxation and spending in Canada: the big buyoff Why is the Conservative government so obsessed with passing its proposed Goods and Services Tax (GST), running against both over­ whelming public opinion, and established parliamentary tradition?

The government has run out of time. Years of giving Canadians everything they want, without exposing the inherent contradictions of established Canadian fiscal policy have put the country in a hole, from which it may well be impossible to recover.

This society has for years demanded Euro­ pean levels of public sector spending, and an American lifestyle.

Europeans pay for their government spend­ ing not only in far higher taxes, but also in a reduced standard of living as measured in real purchasing power per capita.

With knowledge of Americans' standard of living so close to hand, Canadians have not been willing to sacrifice as much of their disposable income to taxation as have Europe­ ans.

The result of voter pressure has been a series of governments (since the Clark government of 1979) which have told the public what it wanted to hear, and as a result, have accumu­ lated a tremendous debt.

Just how large is the debt? Thirty-five cents out of every Canadian tax dollar are spent on interest to service the debt. This compares to only fifteen cents spent on government opera­ tions (administration, the jucicial system and the milit ary). Canadians accustomed to thinking of the U.S. debt as more problematic may be shocked to know that only thirteen cents out of every U.S. tax dollar is spent on debt service.

In fact, Canada has one of the highest public debts per capita in the industrialized world (at about 8% of GNP), and it is rising in real terms. By contrast, during the Reagan era U.S.

public debt increased in nominal dollars, but due to economic expansion fell from 5% of GNP to 3%.

The immediate consequence of such a debt is high interest rates. For the same level of inflation, Canada now endures interest rates 3-5 percentage points higher than the United States. High cost of capital makes it more ex­ pensive for business to finance investment, and ultimately accounts for higher levels of unemployment.

The future consequence of increasing public debt may be a currency crisis. The Bank of Canada has already had to step in several times this year to prevent a rapid decline in the value of the dollar (seriously depleting foreign currency reserves).

Because entitlements and transfer payments are fixed, rising debt service costs must be balanced by cuts in government operations.

Such spending can only be cut so far before the government ceases to function. If debt levels continue to rise, the government will default or reschedule its debts in order to keep running. If foreign currency traders so much as anticipate this situation the dollar will collapse, leaving Canadians destitute on world markets.

The Conservatives think Canadians are more likely to accept a tax increase than a decrease in government service. They chose the GST because the alternative might have meant a 20% rise in personal income tax.

Protest over the GST has demonstrated that a consumption tax is equaly unacceptable.

The harsh reality is that either the standard of living will have to decline relative to the U.S., or universal social programs and regional transfer payments will have to go. Canadians who want the government to continue buying us off are asking for a greater tragedy still.

Dear Editors: We would like to clarify the errors made in Mike Hillman's article.

When Aaron Margolis proposed the airing of live sports on CKUT in August of this year, the Programming Committee unanimously approved the project in principle, providing several conditions were met. Mr. Margolis fully agreed to all stipulations. These included the following (per programming committte minutes. Aug 6 and 13,1990); - all sponsorships would be formally contracted through CKUT's advertising coordinator.

- improved Bell lines would be arranged by Mr. Margolis, in consultation with CKUT, to insure improved sound quality (as expressed in Mr. Margolis' own proposal).

- Mr. Margolis would be the producer of Live Sports broad­ casts and would keep CKUT informed of his progress.

However, CKUT was never informed of any confirmed spon­ sors, nor were we consulted before Bell lines were installed, nor had we known that Mr. Margolis had turned the project over to Mr. Craig Bernes until the day before the first game.

Imagine our surprise when we learned from an embarrassed Mr. Bernes that he is the author of the article- Mike Hillman, writing under an assumed name on the curious advice of Sports Editor James Stewart. We can only infer that this is the Tribune Sports Department's policy of dealing with conflicts of interest.

We would like to point out that the quotes used in the article were, in fact, approximations of parts of the conversation during the Programming Committee meetings with Mr. Bernes, and were neither authorized nor accurate quotes. No one at CKUT was contacted io provide comment for attrition on the football broadcast decision.

We are disappointed with Sports Editor James Stewart in al­ lowing thinly disguised editorials to pass as investigative journalism, as evident in the suggestion that CKUT harbours some anti-athletic "hidden agenda". Furthermore, to allow an interested party to write the article and suggest that he disguise the fact by using a pseudonym is so grossly unethical that one wonders at the credibility of anything printed in The Tribune.

We request that the Tribune offer an apology to both CKUT and Tribune readers for compromising the high standards of campus media.

Erin Berry Berated To the editor and "Erin Berry," How dumb do you think your readership is? The Tribune would have us believe that in true Chomkyist fashion our beloved Disneyland terrorist, Erin Berry, has been co-opted by the mainstream McGill media.

For those who do not know Mr. Berry's story, Erin struck a blow at editorial tyranny and pretentious journalists who "Might Be Giants". And now "Erin" is working with those he fought against, so bravely, only two short years ago?

As George Bush might say, this will not stand. I know Erin Berry, I've worked with Erin Berry, and whoever this schmuck is, he's no Erin Berry. Unless possibly he has finally fallen victim to the odious manipulations of a mass media machine intent on preserving profits and the status quo.

There is at first some irony in the timing of Germany's re­ unification, only four days after Jews around the world observed Yom Kippur.

But it may be that the two events actually complement one another. Both attempt to replace guilt about sin with honest introspection. To­ gether, Yom Kippur and Reunification Day can teach us how to remember great tragedies without crippling the world's and, more specifi­ cally Germany's, future with

guilt.

Yom Kippur was set up as a day apart from the world, during which people could honestly assess their previous year with the goal of making the next one better. To that end, the most recognized part of the Yom Kippur liturgy concerns a declaration of sins that one has committed against both fellow humans and against the idea of uni­ versal good embodied by God. At the core of the service, congregants read "All our sins," an admission of trans­ gressions against justice, peace and one's community.

The exercise is one in honesty, rather than one in guilt.

It should be obvious to those familiar with Yom Kippur that West Germany

has been faithful to that recognition of sin ever since Hitler's fall. President Von Weizsaecker's remarks on Re­ unification Day, presented in this column's epigraph, are only one example of that systematic memory. His own father was convicted of war crimes for serving in the Nazi foreign service.

But there is another, equally important part to the equation of Yom Kippur - forgiveness.

Anypeoplewhodemand, justly, that a united Germany continue to recognize its his­ torical sins, must themselves forgive the new Germany and absolve its people of any guilt associated with the war before it can become a for­ ward-looking democracy.

Many people will be re­ volted at that suggestion because of fears that forgive­ ness comes with a desire to forget. The fear is especially strong today, as the physical reminders of Naziism disap­ pear from Europe and the generation which remembers the. holocaust is giving way to one that can only recognize that it happened.

But if those who fear

But those familiar with Ger­ many also know that the country's active memory has riddled many of its people with guilt. A conversation with a German about Naziism is likely to expose the frustra­ tion and anxiety which come with the realization that the past cannot be changed.

Yom Kippur's honest intro­ spection, on the other hand, does not blame people or "lay guilt" for sin. Rather, a look to the past on Yom Kippur is a part of a step into the future.

Ideally, Germans who view their past that way might har­ ness a memory of tyranny to re-inforce their country's strong commitment to democ­ racy, rather than mire it in

news Arts Senator to propose gender-neutral language WITH SARA BORINS Arts Senator Alex Johnston will respond to a lack of admini strative initiativeby presenting a proposal for a gender-neutral language policy at the next Senate meeting.

The policy would require professors to distribute guide­ lines for gender-neutral lan­ guage use. The guidelines would, "encourage students to refrain from using sexist terms," Johnston said.

Senate recently passed a motion requiring all its statutes be written in gender-neutral language.

Although Senate has recog­ nized that sexist usage of lan­ guage is a problem, no action has been taken to encourage the use of gender-neutral lan­ guage in the classroom.

According to Dean of Arts Michael Maxwell, there is no policy because it would be dif­ ficult to enforce.

"I would agree that non-sex­ ist language oughttobeused in ad m in istrative m atters," Maxwell said, referring to writ­ ten information handed out in class.

"In lectures, however, pro­ fessors have the right to choose the language they use. Admin­ istrative affairs have a struc­ ture whereas lectures are ideas which must never be under compulsion; this would violate academic liberty," Maxwell said. . • In 1987, the Women's Union wrote a letter to McGill profes­ sors "stress(ing) the importance of using non-sexist language" and provided them with guide­ lines for gender-neutral lan­ guage which it hoped would be implemented in the classrooms.

The letter pointed out that one of the most serious effects of sexist language on women in university is "alienation from

the subject matter as many women recognize they are not included in the terms 'man' and 'mankind'."

Three years later, students still encounter such language.

"It makes me feel alienated and angered when professors use the term 'mankind' when what they mean is 'humanity' or when a professor uses the term 'girl' when referring to a w om an," Sarah L eavitt, Women's Union member said.

"It is surprising that in an intel­ lectual setting many professors do not seem to be concerned with the importance of using gender-neutral language."

Some professors have already responded to these concerns.

Music instructor Gary LeToumeau uses gender-neutral language in his lectures and asks students to avoid "sexist or gender specific terms" in their term papers. LeToumeau criticizes professors who be­ lieve the word "man" and other

masculine terms can be used in a generic sense.

"This response is a cop-out and exemplifies the problem of not wanting to deal with sex­ ism," LeToumeau said.

Johnston believes that the Senate is the only place where an’ effort to reduce the use of gender-specific language can be m ade su ccessfu lly . Dean Maxwell agrees: "sexist lan­ guage must be phased ou with people's agreement. A rational approach which emphasizes change must be taken or there isa danger in créa tinga counter­ reaction."

Johnston wants to begin the fight against sexist language in the classroom by introducing guidelines for students. But she feels it will be much more diffi­ cult to contest what some pro­ fessors feel is their academic liberty.

"This is an issue which we can contend with immedi­ ately," Johnston said.

ANEEQ Elections: Will they be different this time?

For the second time in five months, Québec's largest student organiza­ tion, l'Association des étudiantes et étudiants du Québec (ANEEQ) will attempt to elect an execu­ tive for the 1990-91 school year, this weekend. Last June’s attempt failed when divisions within ANEEQ became so acute that one key faction walked out during executive elections and broke quorum. Waver­ ing support from key members like the Concordia University Students' Asso­ ciation (CUSA) and l'Asso­ ciation générale des étudi­ ants de l'Université du Québec à Montréal (AGEUQAM) has weak­ ened ANEEQ. The October 13 elections will, therefore, be a key test of strength for the organization.

There is more to these elections than just factional infighting. The outcome of the elections could affect the state of the entire student movement in Québec.

Three different outcomes may result from the meet­ ingThe first possible outcome is quorum will be reached, the elections will take place and the three declared candidates so far (Nathalie Emault, Eric Guindon and Yves Breton) will be ac­ claimed. These three candi­ dates come from the far left of ANEEQ, the branch associated with the MarxistLeninist Groupe d'action socialiste (GAS). They would likely continue the more centralized decision­ making procedures and absolutist politics of previ­ ous ANEEQ executives Josette Coté, Stéphane Lessard and Jeff Begley.

Alternately, the meeting could fail to meet quorum for a second time this year, leaving ANEEQ (still) without an executive.

ANEEQ Information Officer Stéphane Lessard says that reaching quorum will be "no problem" and that the divisions of last year will be "resolved at our congress next weekend". He says that twelve schools have confirmed their presence so far, one more than the eleven schools needed for quorum.

des Etudiantes et Etudiants du Québec, which is often perceived as competitive with ANEEQ The third scenario is un­ likely, but possible. Ru­ mours are circulating that more moderate candidates, such as André Gagnon of AGEUQAM, may surface on October 13.

AGEUQAM, the home of the anti-GAS faction and thus more moderate, is currently boycotting ANEEQ. AGEUQAM stu­ dents are not attending meetings nor are they paying membership fees.

However, a meeting of all the department associations may be called in time for AGEUQAM to suspend or even call off the boycott, al­ lowing its more moderate candidates to enter the elec­ tions.

Even if the more moder­ ate wing of ANEEQ should manage to gain control of the executive the Québec student movement will remain divided. Not even the potential AGEUQAM candidates would compro­ mise with la Fédération des étudiantes et étudiants du Québec (FEEQ) on the issue of free tuition.

Both Usher and PierrePaul St-Onge of AGEUQAM doubt that cooperation between ANEEQ and FEEQ is possible, but Usher thinks that a more moderate ANEEQ executive "would be easier to work with" and that it could make a differ­ ence in the long run.

The old ANEEQ execu­ tive and FEEQ are so hostile to each other that meaning­ ful dialogue seems impos­ sible.

What is more likely, how­ ever, is that the old ANEEQ orientation, be it enunciated by the old executive or the three current candidates, will remain; that the divi­ sion between ANEEQ and FEEQ will worsen; and that the Québec government will continue laughing its head off at the continuously divided student movement.

news Arts Council committee to research possible ASUS split

BY SHANNON ALDINGER The Arts Council of the Arts and Science Undergraduate So­ ciety (ASUS) created a commit­ tee last week to investigate the political and financial ramifica­ tions of dividing the ASUS into two separate faculty under­ graduate students' societies.

"Arts students have different needs than Science students.

[With a division] we would have a stronger voice because we would be concentrating on representing only our own issueareas," ASUS VP-Arts Lynn Torrance said.

A rts Action Com m ittee Chairperson Bill Mooney be­ lieves a divided ASUS would increase the Arts Council's "political clout."

"We [Arts students] would have the same number of rep­ resentatives to the Students' Society (SSMU) bu t we'd proba­ bly have more on Senate and the Board of Governors. There­ fore we'd have a stronger lob­ bying group," Mooney said.

"Separate societies would be more democratic because fac­ ulties and department Presi­ dents would have more input into policy and decision-mak­ ing," Torrance said.

Under the current system, departmental students' associa­ tions are represented by their Presidents at the Arts and Sci­

ence Councils. The Arts and Science Councils are then rep­ resented at ASUS by the ASUS VP-Arts and VP-Science respec­ tively.

Torrancebelieves an ASUS split would financially bene­ fit Arts students. Each Arts and Science student contributes ten dollars per year to ASUS. Be­ cause the Faculty of Arts has approximately 2,000 more stu­ dents than the Faculty of Sci­ ence, Torrance thinks "science students clearly benefit under the present system."

But ASUS VP-Science Shawn Kahn says the Science Council of ASUS is "more reluctant to embrace the idea of a split", primarily because of this enrol­ ment disparity. Kahn admits he is "worried about the financial implications of a split."

Kahn is uncertain as to whether or not the Science Council will set up a commi ttee parallel to the Arts Action Committee because "it would be a waste of time to set up a committee to convince our­ selves that a split wouldn't be beneficial to us."

Students question w hether Union R ide Board needs a screening process to increase safety.

The McGill Travel Club is currently assessing the safety and confidentiality of the Ride Board after students expressed concern about the lack of a screening process.

The Ride Board hangs next to Sadie's in the Union Building and helps match students who are driving to out-of-town des­ tinations with students who are looking for rides. Students fill out cards with their name and phone number and leave them on the board, a procedure that has left some students wary about using the service.

"I would be very afraid to take a ride from any strange male. I would want some as­ surance from the makers of the Ride Board that the driver has been screened. Whoguarantees that the driver is not a screw­ ball? I am sure that even McGill students can be squirrelly," said Vivian Tang, U3 Arts.

The University of Western Ontario has instituted several measures to ensure student safety in its ride service. It charges five dollars for mem­ bership, refuses to post names and only allows individuals

with university identification to use the service.

Bu t McGill Travel Club Presi­ dent Luc Bélanger calls West­ ern's measures "an extreme approach."

"Before making our Ride Board, we called six different schools to find out what they're doing," Bélanger said. "We found that Western is the only university that is so confiden­ tial. It's just another way for them to make money."

Bélanger has not heard ofany violent incident resulting from the use of a university ride board and questions how any sort of screening measure could prevent such an incident.

"What could we possibly do to discriminate anyway? I don't know if our screening process could help."

One McGill student who re­ cently advertised a ride be­ lieved a screening process is unneccesary.

"I can do that (screening) myself," she said. "I would think thatonly McGill students would see my ad and I would trust them. However if some­ one called who wasn't a McGill student, I would be wary." □

At a general meeting of the Women's Union last week, members decided not to change their constitution to conform with the SSMU constitution.

"It's a fundamental aspect of the W om en's Union that women have a space to come to et away," member Hanna ickard said. "Men can have access to the services, such as using the books and buying birth control, but not to the space itself."

"It's not that we want to al­ ienate or isolate men. We want to educate and engage them, but we have to come together

as a goup first so we can have the resources to educate and engage them," Pickard said.

Women's Union members want the SSMU constitution to include an affirmative action clause similar to section 15.2 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms which allows discrimination for "the amelio­ ration of conditions of disad­ vantaged individuals or groups", including those dis­ advantaged because of sex.

"Since we are a service-ori­ ented club for individuals dis­ advantaged on the basis of gender, we should be allowed to discrimnate," Pickard said.

Members of the Women's Union are trying to organize a broad coalition of support for the amendment from groups suchas the Walk-SafeNetwork, MAIS and the Black Students' Network.

Over the summer, both WalkSafe's and MAIS' constitutions were rejected as "discrimina­

tory". Walk-Safe wants a ma­ jority of women on its execu­ tive, while MAIS wants its ex­ ecutive to be made up of inter­ national students, or at least Canadians who have lived out of the country.

MAIS President Lina Souki will support an affirmative action clause if there is no other way for her group to be recog­ nized.

"We're not going to give up the idea of naving definite qualifications for our execu­ tive," Souki said.

If theaffirmativeactionclause goes to referendum it may be voted on separately from the recom m endations of a constitutional review commit­ tee due next spring. The com­ mittee is looking into making SSMU's constitution bilingual and removing referencesto staff and committees in theconstitution. The affirmative action clause may be kept separate to increase student awareness of the issue. □

The Arts Council initially had wanted to keep their in­ vestigation a secret from both students and the media, but decided this was impossible because a member of the campus media was present at the meeting.

"Keep it (the committee) quiet until we know what's going on," English Under­ graduate Society Thomas Fedoryak said at last week's Arts Council meeting. "We want the students to make an educated decision (when voting in the possible refer­ endum)."

"We (Arts Councillors) would have liked to have the report together before we talk about it in public," Mooney said.

According to Mooney, the committee will consult Dean of Arts Michael Maxwell be­ fore it submi ts its recommen-

dation to the Arts Council.

Maxwell was unavailable for comment.

Mooney also emphasized that the separation may oc­ cur only if it is deemed bene­ ficial to both faculties.

Kahn doubts the Science Council will approve the idea.

"The onus is more on the Arts Council to convince us (Science) of the benefits of a splitforus," Kahn said. "Even if the Arts Council is unani­ mously in favour of it, if (he Science Council isn't con­ vinced we will block it."

If both faculty councilsand ASUS approve the division by two thirds, the question will be put to referendum. If students approve the idea, the proposal will be brought to SSMU, the Senate and the Board of Governors.

Although Mooney empha­ sized the committee is "not promoting an ASUSsplitbut rather an investigation into the idea of a split", he also stated that he "can't see any benefits in staying to­ gether." □

Recycling plans and projects may go up in smoke if Montréal builds a new incinerator

BY MEGAN SMITH________ Environmental activists in Montréal are upset over the city's decision to allocate 85% of it'swastemanagementfunds to build a new incinerator, leaving only 15% for recycling and other projects.

The city has been continuously criticized for it's outdated waste management system. Environmental activists are concerned over the Montréal Urban Community's choice to build an incinerator rather than concentrate its efforts on redesigning the existing program. Unlike many other cities in Canada, Montréal has no door-to-door pick-up recycling program.

Groups such as Québec PIRG (Q uébec Public Interest Research Group) at McGill and Concordia, and Greenpeace are

cooperating in fighting the new incinerator plan. Greenpeace spokesperson Lorinne Larouche said the of organiza­ tion, "W e are opposed to

If the incinerator is not built, alternative waste management methods will have to be put in place. According to Québec PIRG , a waste program involving reduction,reuse, and recycling would be difficult to implement, but necessary. A new policy would require the revam ping of the entire garbage collection system in Montréal, promoting "major changes in citizen disposal h ab its," and expanding markets for recycled products.

While the Montréal Urban Community may not have a city-wide recycling plan, some small scale programs already exist in the city and on campus.

There are various "green-box" recycling depots in most areas of Montréal, which accept paper, cardboard and glass twenty-four hours a day.

Unfortunately there is no

newspaper de-inking plant in Québec, so most newspaper is either stock-piled or thrown out. The collection of newspaper continues, however, because the city officials feel that it is at least getting people accustomed to separating their garbage.

Recycling on the McGill campus is organized by the adm inistration, with the cooperation of Québec PIRG and Domtar, a private recy­ cling company. Fine paper re­ cycling, which is currently tak­ ing place in the engineering buildings, Leacock Building, and Burnside Hall, will be ex­ panding to other buildings this month.

The Food and Beverage Committee of Québec PIRG is trying to set up an environ­ mental contract with Scott's Food Services in an effort to

reduce the amount of excess packaging.

Student initiated recycling in the residences is in beginning stages. Gardner Hall will be collecting cans, bottles, and newspapers, and later fine papier, but it has not finalized details for pick-up. "A private com pany has offered to provide bins for every floor, and will pick them up free of charge," Kylie 0"N eill, or­ ganizer of the recycling pro­ gram at Royal Victoria College, said. Lunch bag recycling is also encouraged in the residences the RVC cafeteria alone uses 16,000 bags pier year.

These first steps towards a comprehensive recycling pro­ gram are encouraging but, unless the city of Montréal it­ self begins to recognize the need for such a policy, they will amount to very little. □

foi Lack of experience makes fund-raising a difficult task for student volunteers

BY SARAH LEVINE Although the environment is a major concern in the media and public opinion right now, it seems that the people doing the fund­ raising for it are as "green" as the cause they are supporting. Stu­ dent organizers are finding that their own inexperience, as well as the lack of an organized net­ work with a history of fund-rais­ ing for this particular cause is making their job difficult.

Stuart Letovsky, co-president of the Concordia University Stu­ dent Association (CUSA) and organizer of the disastrous "Envirorock" last month, described himself as having "naive" ideas about fundraising when he be­ gan organizing the event.

While trying to organize the concert line-up, Letovsky "was disappointed. I thought people do things for free, but that [was] completely naive and wrong."

He discovered "the only way to get big-name bands" was to hire a professional producer to or­ ganize the benefit. "They can promise to get them other gigs in exchange for doing this one."

By the time the producers had organized the concert, CUSA had spent more than $60,000. Due to exceptionally bad weather that day, the benefi t lost money - leav­ ing CUSA to foot a $30,000 bill.

Needless to say, their benefici­ ary, Friends of The Earth, didn't receive any proceeds.

The relative novelty of perva­ sive and widespread concern about the environment is frus­ trating for environment benefit organizers. Julie Godin, social co­ ordinator of the Law Students' Society of McGill, has organized a benefit concert fof the World

Wildlife Fund, taking place in conjunction with an environ­ mental conference at the Law faculty this week.

A ccording to M ichel Pelletier, a coordinator of research for the organization, their role is "to give students an opportunity to apply knowledge that they have ac­ quired in school by working both on and off campus."

Pelletier emphasized the need for students to do re­ search on specific environ­ mental laws, such as those concerning domestic and in­ dustrial waste disposal at municipal, provincial and federal levels. "Our regional policies and laws need to be assessed in comparison to those of other cities, prov­ inces and U.S. states," he said.

She said that "the law school itself raises a huge amount of money every year for other

charities. We thought we would have an environmental fund­ raiser in conjunction with theenvironmental conference. don't have a lot of money and we wanted it to operate so that we would be sure we didn't lose anything," Godin said Godindescribed herself asalso naive about the likelihood of well-known bands playing for free. "I heard that Envirorock got "The Pursuit of Happiness" and thought 'great - we'll be able to draw a huge crowd'. What I didn't know was that these bands don't play for free - not even benefits."

Godin said the Law Students' Association chose to have a much lower-scale, and lower-risk, event than Concordia. They are contracting local M ontreal bands, who are as interested in

the exposure as they are in the environment.

Convincing even local bands to play at the benefit wasn't easy.

"Getting struggling bands is a problem in itself. 'Cheap, local talent' sounds great, but these bands still need to pay the rent. A couple of bands in this category had to refuse because they said they just couldn't afford to do it," Godin said.

The concert, called Rock for the Rainforest, cost a total of $2500, which will be covered if 500 tickets are sold. Any extra profits from beer sales and ticket sales will go to their beneficiary, the World Wildlife Fund.

Thisresearch will naturally lead to the education of oth­ ers. "Once students have learned more, they can ex­ press their opinions to other students, colleagues and fac­ ulty. There are many medi­ ums through which people can voice their views - cam­ pus radio, newspapers and other publications."

An informed public will be less likely deceived by politi­ cal doubletalk. For example, according to Gordon Ed­ wards, a member of Hydro Glasnost's James Bay com­ mittee, claimed that Mme Bacon, the Québec minister of theenvironmentis "incom­ petent or lying. She is not giving the true facts to Que­ becers." Assertions such as these can only be defended or shot down within by knowing more than one per­ spective on the facts in ques­ tion.

Pelletier feels that indus­ tries are adjusting increas­ ingly to environmental de­ mands made at a consumer level, so that more and more often we can select an "envi­ ronmentally friendly" brand.

Being properly informed also makes it possible to choose recyclable, reusable products and know which brands practice environmentally sound manufacturing and testing. □

Law students are trying to focus attention on the en­ vironment this week through a student-run conference on Law and Policyfor an Ecologica l Age. This conference is a part of a steadily increasing interest in the environmental movement that has resulted in a class and an active student organization in the faculty.

This interest, while cer­ tainly rooted in concern for the environment, may also be due to the increased demand for lawyers trained in en­ vironmental law.

Ron Lauenstein, a McGill law student coordinating the con­ ference explained that environ­ mental law "is a growth indus­ try. In the last two or thee years, law firms have fored that are exclusively dedicated to envi­ ronmental law to meet the huge demand."

The private sector, in par­ ticular, is the source of much demand for lawyers special­ izing in environm ental le g is la tio n . " In d u s tr ia l companies must be practical.

There is more legislation to con­ sider than ever," explained Jutta Brunnée, professor of In­ ternational Environment Law in the Faculty of Law at McGill.

Concerned students in the Faculty of Law made the de­ partment aware of their desire

for an increased emphasis on environmental law. As a result, two new courses have been added to the cirriculum, one of which of taught by Professor Brunnée.

This is not only a matter of changing our laws, bu t chang­ ing our value, perceptions, and ethics. We must ask our­ selves wh at is important in our lives." □

Environmentally friendly practices for home

BY NAOMI FOX Human intervention is the single largest factor in the destruction of the environment. But human intervention can also work for the good of the world we live in. These are a few of the ways in which you can do something: 1. The Three R's of Waste Management are: Reduce, Reuse, Re­ cycle. Recycling waste such as paper and aluminum cans not only allows us to conserve valuable raw materials, and energy but also eliminates the high cost need for disposal. Also, refrain from buying products with excess packaging and avoid bagging your purchases unless it is necessary.

2. Buy items made from recycled materials. About 77% of all recycling produces paper products. As a consumer, you can show support by buying the resulting goods. The larger the market, the larger the scale of production of recycled goods and accordingly, the lower the price.

3. If given a choice of products, buy ones which are environmen­ tally safe. For example, instead of buying an aerosol spray deodorant which contains propellants called ozone-destroying chemicals, buy a roll-on. Be aware, however that product labels such as "Environ­ mentally Friendly" can be very misleading. For example, 'biode­ gradable' and 'photodegradable' garbage bags decompose into largç but still toxic molecules with all the potential to contaminate groundwater of their overtly environmentally unfriendly counterparts.

e n t e r t a in m e n t A mystical Memphis Belle proves hokey and harmless

BY ASHLEIGH HIGGINS May, 1943. The skies over Western Europe are thick with smoke as German bombers continue their desecration of Allied aircrafts. Enter the crew of the 'Memphis Belle', a dis­ parate group of young men on the verge of making WWII/ aviation history by successfully completing twenty-five mis­ sions over Germany.

With Western spin ts sagging under the weight of Nazi su­ premacy, the weathered B-17 bomber and her ten-member crew become the focus of a mili tary PR campaign designed to raise citizen morale. How­ ever, despite all indications to the contrary, Memphis Belle is notintended to be merely a film about WWII. Director Michael Caton-Jones ( Scandal ) clearly has something to say about the nature of team­ work and friendship. For the first twenty minutes, things look promising: Caton-Jones attempts to create a distinct personality for each character.

He invests each with contrastingatti tudes and unique quirks, and builds a (superficial) sense of camaraderie among the men.

It soon becomes evident, how­ ever, that the large ensemble cast (which includes Matthew Modine, Eric Stoltz, Sean Astin and Harry Connick, Jr.) prove too much for the director to handle.

Many of the initial details designed to pro­ vide insight into their respec­ tive psyches are left undevel­ oped. Consequently, the audi­ ence is left with an overwhelm­ ing feeling not of concern but rather of ambivalence.The moral message is handled with

about as much delicacy as the Oka crisis.

Only the enigmatic Stoltz, as the sensitive Danny Daley, is able to establish even a tenta­ tive relationship with the viewer. The talents of Modine and Astin, in particular, are left burned beneath a barrage of indifference and the extremely gifted John Lithgow (as Col. Bruce Derenger, head of the 'M emphis Belle' publicity campaign) appears as nothing more than a sleazy caricature.

Vastly superior to, and almost making up for the adolescent script, however, is David Watkin's superb cinematography.

Memphis Belle succeeds as a collection of pensive close-ups and sweeping panoramas, glo­ riously shot in warm golden tones which are highlighted by George Fenten's evocative musical score. Jim Belushi assembles a model, and ponders whether or not he will ever appear in a a successful movie.

"You remember the old story.

A guy walks into a bar. Well, I'm the guy and here's my story." So says Jim Belushi at the start of his new movie, Mr. Destiny. Any film that unimagi­ natively exploits a tired cliché of a plot is dubious at best. It is not a good sign when the movie begins with the warning: "You remember the old story." The answer is yes for anyone who has happened upon such un­ knowns as It's A Wonderful Life, The Wizard Of Oz or the more recentBackToTheFutureseries.

If a movie is going to bla­ tantly recycle an "old story,” what obligation does the film­ maker have, if any, to add somethingother than new char­ acter names to the same old tale?

Whether it is Jimmy Stewart or Jimmy Belushi who is cast in the role of the desperate man given the rare priv i lege to look back on an alternative life,

modern-day Hollywood would like to bel ieve that the aud ience does not particularly care.

Alarmingly few original scripts are being written nowadays, so regurgitations like Mr. Destiny are all we get.

This regurgitation goes like this. Jim Belushi plays Larry Burrows, a 35-year old man who struck out in the crucial game of the All-State World Series when he was the tender, im­ pressionable age of fourteen.

"It was the worst moment of my life," narrates Larry. "God, it felt bad."

For the following two dec­ ades, he is haunted by that experience and figuresifhehad only swung the bat half a sec­ ond sooner, his life would have been very different. An angel/ destiny maker (played by Michael Caine) shows Larry

Same old song: If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it

It's kisses all around fo r the world-dreary cast of Blithe Spirit.

BY DAVID GRUBER This Saturday last I had the somewhat dubious pleasure of attending the opening night of the Saidye Bronfman Centre's production of Noel Coward's Blithe Spirit. Now I don't think there's a bigger Noel Coward fan in this city than I, so I think you can guess at my level of enthusiasim. Theatre, since those bloody existentialists got their hands on it, has not been a eat deal of fun. So with it was gh hopes that I took the métro toCôteSte. Catherine that night.

The play is classic Coward. It was penned as a response to the number of songs written about eternal love, particularly Irving Berlin's classic Always.

The world-weary sophisticate was simply apalled by the no­ tion of eternity. Who wouldn't one grow tired of in that time?

In the play Charles Condomine, a novelist, is doing a rather tongue-in-cheek work on psy­ chics. At a dinner party given by one of his subjects, the spirit of Charles' dead wife Elvira is inadvertently conjured. Elvira makes life hell for Charles and current wife, Ruth. Suffice it to say: iUsall downhill from there, and except for the very end, one of Coward's best works.

Unfortunately, the produc­ tion lacks both in sensitivity to the play, and in talent. All the wit, charm, and style of the work has been transformed into a high-school level per­ formance. Physical humour is the only kina that seems to work, which is totally inappro­ priate for a play that is sup­ posed to be all about words.

Lily Parker's direction be­ trays a lack of understanding for Coward and his work.

Coward's characters are meant to delight audiences with their disdain and flippancy. In this production, flippant lines are often delivered with the same

Paule Josée Meunier's cos­ tume designsare no better. Clipon bow ties and short sleeve dress shirts look bad on any­ one, but on su pposedly sophis­ ticated characters, they're just obscene.

Parker and the cast will have to work a lot harder at this if they are to justify the $18 the SBC is charging for Blithe Spirit.

It's really a great pity. Sold out audiences all summer (the cast erformed the play in Lac rome), and quite a good turnout Saturday attest to the public desire for thekind of wit and sophistication that mod­ ern plays simply don't pro­ vide. □

The delivery is not just a problem of direction. Parker has decided to impose the British accent on the actors. Though absolutely necessary- one could hardly expect these lines to be delivered by anyone else but the British-some of the attempts are quite ridiculous. Emma Stevens, who plays the current wife, and Ann Page, who plays the medium, are origmaly English, but none of the five other actors are. Pierre Lenoir, asCharles, is absolutely the pits: slipping backand forth between British and Cary Grant, and doing neither one justice.

Not only was the enunciation bad, but the timing was off.

Cues were missed, and the dialogue was, in general, too slow. The characters are sup­ posed to positively blither. In this production, wither might be a more apt term.

Listening to Bossanova brings back memories of a Kids in the Hall sketch in which an archetypal high school science teacher ex­ plains to a rockin' youth that

If you're inclined to believe the maxim, 'if it ain't broke don't fix it', then the similar­ ity between thetwoalbumsis no problem. Singles such as "Stormy Weather", "All Over the World", and "Velouria" exemplify all that is good with the Pixies' sound.

The melodies are catchy; they hang in your mind in much the same infectuous way as the Doolittle hit "Here Comes Your Man". The gui­ tars are loud in full post-punk fashion. And the lyrics, even after a third listen, remain suf­ ficiently nebulous. None of this, however, is new.

That is to say, even though there's nothing wrong with the album, you've heard it all before and you might do bet­ ter by waiting for something more interesting. □

entertainment Pessimistic debut for Daniel Weaver - a young musician from Montreal - who inflicts his mellow pain on listeners

The press release for Montreal musician Daniel Weaver's debut solo album, Good Day Messiaht desribes it as "an intimate diary of one man's attempt to recon­ cile what is important be­ tween life and death, and how to overcome that fine line, rather than be destroyed by it." This sombre, unspec­

tacular first effort is just that; there are definitely no light, upbeat, catchy tunes in Weaver's repertoire.

While his mellow, acous­ tic harmonies are pleasing enough and the lyrics are quite expressive, one can't help but feel depressed and dreary after listening it.

Weaver's voice is chilling, not to mention rather obnox­ ious, and his songs reflect

The movie is not irredeem­ able: Jon Lovitz is funny as Larry's best buddy and there are times when Belushi suc­ ceeds in adding life to his list­ less lines. Despite its many and

conspicuous shortcomings, Mr. Destiny does have a certain amount of entertainment value.

After the movie was over and people were filing out of the theatre, a man was asked what he thought of the film. The man, who was arm and arm with his wife, answered, "It reminded me of myself. I dream like that."

The parallel became obvious.

He continued, "The subject matter was good. Learn from it.

I learned from it." At which point he playfully grabbed his wife around the waist and the couple strolled away. The beaming smile that appeared on her face was unforgettable.

If this movie can illicit such a response, if only for a short time, the bad press it might, and will most likely receive should not be a concern. There is good reason thatHolllywood chums out a countless number of such banal films. It is due to the fact that a countless number of people truly enjoy them. □

UQAC spent much o f the gam e back on their heels in an 11-0 walloping at the hands o f the Martlets.

The University of Quebec at Chicoutimi added another page to Martlet history last Saturday at Molson stadium. The sides had not previously faced each other. The first encounter was cause for celebration. The rea­ son for this soon became appar­ ent, as the Martlets strolled to an 11-0 victory.

Although also drubbed 11-0

by Concordia last week, Chicoutimi did not lack style.

They possess a most colourful blue with red and white slashed uniform, and have perfected perhaps the most tuneful pre­ game war cry in the division.

Unfortunatly, the bravado ended as the game began.

dis virtually ran the game with a five goal haul. She and Sharon Tait took little time in dispos­ ing of the Chicoutimi defence.

After only two minutes Tait had given the Martlets an early lead, running on to an enormous punt from goalie Natalie Lepanta and shooting low under the Chicoutimi goalie.

Tait was also instrumental in McGill's second and third goals.

To say that Tait has perfected the comer kick would be an understatement. Floating the balls consistently to the far post, Ioanidis was twice on hand in the space of three minutes to convert Tait's shots.

Afterwards, she praised her teammate's comer shots.

Redmen in deep hole after Thanksgiving loss

BY SEAN GORDON The cavernous confines of Ottawa's nearly empty Lansdowne Park was the scene for a Thanksgiving clash between OQIFC rivals, McGill Redmen and the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees last Friday.

The conditions, like most of the plays, were rather sloppy.

The rain that fell throughout most of the game varied from a light autumnal drizzle to a vi­ cious downpour, which made footing hopelessly treacherous for most of the first half.

Coming into Ottawa, the Redmen were hoping to regain their winning form after last week's narrow defeat at the hands of the hated Queen's Golden Gaels. But Ottawa posted a 34-27 win, improving their record to 2-2 and drop­ ping McGill to 1-3.

The defence was obviously primed for the game as they exhibited the strong first half play thathascharacterized their season.

It was the offence that once again proved ineffective by not making use of the excellent field position that was given to them by the defence and special teams. Early turnovers proved costly to the Redmen, stopping early momentum, and giving Ottawa the advantage of field position deep in the Redmen zone.

It was a first quarter intercep­

tion by the Gee-Gees that let fullback Rob Anderson break through the Redmen defence for an eight yard touchdown at the six minute mark which staked Ottawa to a 7-0 first quarter lead.

The Redmen were stymied for the remainder of the period.

They only got on the board af­ ter a 42 yard single from a Scott Weldon punt. Weldon contrib­ uted yet another single on a monster 55 yard punt to make the score 7-2. The game re­ mained fixed until midway through the second quarter when Ottawa's Cam Baird booted a 33 yard field goal into the wind to make it 10-2 for the home team.

McGill was within a touch­ down of victory on another Weldon single this one coming off of a missed field goal at­ tempt from 43 yards out.

Ottawa wasted no time in stretching its margin, however, with Baird hitting running back Guy Battaglini with 48 yard pass and run play for the major score.

Battaglini was all over the field for the Gee-Gees on this night running for 116 yards on 31 carries with one touchdown, and catching four passes for 116 yards and two TD's.

The score remained 17-3 un­ til, with under a minute left, Coach Charlie Baillie replaced starting quarterback Justin Raymond with Yanik Prefon-

game out of reach.

Towards the end, the Redmen managed to make play inter­ esting as they pummelled Ot­ tawa's third and fourth string­ ers on an 83 yard "play of the game" pass and run touchdown from Prefontaine to Christian Masotti.

Richie Babin's recovery for a touchdown of what was argua­ bly the worst snap in CIAU

history (a snap that sailed five feet over punter/quarterback Cam Baird's head and rolled 35 yards into the end zone), and a Scott Weldon field goal from 27 yards out com pleted the Redmen scoring.

This action all came a little too late. As it was, the Gee-Gees counted their blessings and walked off with the victory.

sports McGill swim teams to mix veterans with the rookies

Lots of them could be. It's just a matter of believing in themselves and when they start doing this, I think we could do extremely well."

this year's swim season He and his three assistants, Christopher Lambert, Joe Lee and Marco Cavazonni, have high hopes for their team. Six years ago, when Laurin started coaching, they were in last place. Last year the team was ranked eighth in the country.

This year they are headed for their best season ever. To reach their goal, the team practices twice a day during the week and once on Saturday, spend­ ing a total of 18 hours in the pool. In addition, they follow a heavy weight training program and, periodically, are weighed and given fat tests.

"Now, we have more eyes to look at the swimmers. We're trying to help them the best we can. We also have a good p h ysiotherapist, Stéphane Tremblay, who is my right hand." said Laurin.

Even though the training programisverydemanding, the swimmers are enthusiastic.

Janet McKetsy, a junior from Sudbury, Ontario said "I feel very positive about the team.

Francois has an excellent pro­ gram. Besides, a lot of veterans are back and there are many good rookies. " In fact, the squad will be bol­ stered by eleven newcomers this season to try to fill the gap left by seven departed swim­ mers. Among them were An­ drea Nugent, a bronze medallistatthel988Seoul Olympics, who left to train with the na­

tional team in Calgary and Richard Cosgrove, a gold medalist for the Quebec pro­ vincial team, who returned to Toronto in order to train with his former coach. The team also lost former captain Alexa Bagnell, Robin Ruggiero, Marie-Claude Saumure, Mark Oldhamand Christopher Lam­ bert.

'The team is doing pretty well this year," said Laurin.

When towels are off The controversial question of whether or not female re­ porters should be allowed in the dressing rooms of male athletes has again exposed itself.

Just last week, a female re­ porter for the USA Today was refused entry into the locker room of the National Football League's Cincinnati Bengals. The decision was the idea of Bengal coach Sam Wyche.

The NFL, however, hap­ pens to have a policy of al­ lowing female reporters into the dressing rooms just as the male reporters are.

NFL Commisioner, Paul Tagliabue, consequently, did not look too favourably upon Wyche's decision.

The result was a $30,000 fine.

But this was not an isolated incident. Last Friday night, Cal Murphy, the General Manager of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League, went on the record saying he wasn't going to allow a female reporter from the CBC into the Blue Bomber dressing room after the game.

The CFL also has an equal access policy but chose not to discipline the Winnipeg GM. The actual result of this incident was that no report­ ers were allowed in the team's locker room after the game. Instead, a reception room was set up where all reporters could meet the players after the game. This is the situation the NFL Players' Association would prefer. They don't want anyone in their dressing rooms after the game. That would not be much of a so­ lution, however, as it creates an artificial situation and is not too difficult for athletes to avoid.

So where does that leave us?

Should female reporters be allowed in the dressing rooms of male athletes?

The question is a sticky one. However, if a team agrees to allow a female reporter in the dressing

room, then fine, no problem.

But, if a team chooses not to have a female reporter in the dressing room then that should be their prerogative.

The wishes of the male ath­ lete who wants to undress in peace should be re­ spected.

The tough part about all this is that that opinion will upset a lot of women. But I'm sure a team of female athletes would not appreci­ ate a male reporter waltzing into the dressing room as they scamper out of the shower unclad.

One thing should be clear.

The teams are not saying 'no' to female reporters because they think they don't belong or that they can't do their job. It's simply to give the athlete the peace of mind to undress without worrying about the opposite sex just as a female athlete would choose.

A column in last week's Globe and Mail raised the question of why a woman would want to go into a male athlete's dressing room anyway. As any ath­ lete will tell you, the locker room culture is only a few links ahead of the apes in terms of evolution. In other words, guys are pigs in there.

But what about access?

Shouldn't a female have the same opportunities as a male to get the post-game quotes?

Of course she should have the same opportunity and that is possible under the present rules where they are allowed in the locker room after the game. But if the team says no then there is a problem.

It is not likely that this problem will go away in the near future. In the mean­ time it is important to understand that the prob­ lem is not one of sexism but a player's privacy.

The UQAC defence, as effec­ tive as their team name is po­ etic, added to their own misery with weak tackling and hope­ lessly inadequate clearances.

Martlet right wing Sarah Cartwright, using such a disas­ ter to her advantage, delivered a low cross that Ioanidis duti­ fully smashed in for the Mar­ tlets' fourth goal.

Right back Debbie Lisle's first goal as a Martlet finished the half's scoring. Winning the ball near the half way line, Lisle was able to prove the Martlets did not need help from the Chicoutimi defence, as she scored wi th the perfect lob from outside the box.

Dubious offside calls, not helped by the fact that one offi­ cial did not find the time to

show up, prevented further humiliation for Chicoutimi. The most peculiar moment in the officiating occurred when the charitable referee blew for half time three minutes early.

The second half simply re­ played the first. Already enjoy­ ing a 5-0 lead, the Martlet midfield proved a wall to any­ thing UQAC attempted. The defence, as a matter of prin­ ciple, refused the ball entry into the Martlet half. The Martlets lined up for shooting practice, with sweeper Jocelyn Dutil striking first.

Sarah Cartwright added a seventh goal in the fifty-eigth minute as Iaonidis and Angela Corinthios tightened their al­ ready near death grip on the game. Ioanidis herself scored soon after to take her tally to four, following another tower­ ing clearance from goalie Lepanta.

Tait - again on the breakaway - saw her shot blocked, but still managed to put the rebound to

Ioanidis who made no mistake in upping the scoreline.

The route was concluded with goals from Sarah Cartwight (her second), and Venessa Skelton, with Ioanidis scoring a fifth late in the game to mimick Concordia's 11-0 destruction of Chicoutimi a week earlier.

Coach Tony Iachetta was naturally pleased with his team'splay. He stated thathard work in practice was now be­ ginning to pay off. He did, however show concern over the quality of the refereeing, and conceded thatitis"neverpleasing to go and beat a team badly like this."

Certainly the game was en­ joyable for the Martlets and those who had come out to watch, but with Chicoutimi, now obviously the league's whipping team, it is not diffi­ cult to sympathize with Iachetta's desire for a more com­ petitive and stronger divi­ sion. □

The team's schedule starts with a dual meet against the University of Montreal, which

features some of the best swimmers in the country.

"TheMcGill-Montreal Clash" will take place at the Currie Gym on Oct. 24. On Nov. 9 , "The Tradition Continues" with a dual meet against the University of Toronto, ranked number one in Canada. The McGill squad is ready and in top shape. The key swimmers to watch are Tracy Darling, Sarah Singer, Janet McKetsy, Marty Roberts, Jennifer Lailey, Craig Perfect, Steve Balderston and Paul Wat­ son. □

The McGill Redmen hockey team opened up its season last weekend at a tournament in Trois Rivieres. The club played three games winning only one of the three constests.

The Redmen lost 8-1 to Concordia. The only highlight was Paul Grech's 50th career goal for McGill. Subsequently, the team, beat Ottawa 7-6 in an overtime shootout. Paul Grech scored twice, as well as Patrice Tremblay who is expected to have a big year. Singles came from Bryan Larkin, Kai Joslin and Martin Olivier.

In the final game McGill lost again to arch-rival UQTR by a score of 4-2. Goals came from Paul Grech and Marc La jeunesse.

You can see the Redmen in action this weekend when they take on the Brock Badgers in back to back games this Saturday (7:30) and Sunday (2:00) at the McConnel Winter Stadium.

Cross-country runner setting pace McGill's Linda Thyer is leaving the competition in her windstreamasshe won her second consecutive cross-country race last weekend in Sherbrooke. In beating her nearest oppo­ nent by 50 seconds and leading McGill to the overall victory, Thyer captured QSSF Female Athlete of the Week honours for the second week in a row. The Martlet cross-country team is now ranked 10th in the nation.

The men's team finished second led by Greg Barrett who finished fourth.

The McGill Redmen and Concordia Stingers will be meeting head to head in the annual Shrine Bowl at Concordia's Loyola Stadium this Saturday at 1:30. All net proceeds will be going to the Shriner's Hospital For Crippled Children. Come on out to see the most important game of the year (in more ways than one) and support a worthy cause

Martlet Rugby continues to roll on The McGill Martlets upped their record to 4-1 in the Quebec Women's Rugby League. Last weekend they rolled over Marianapolis 46-0. The Martlets were led by Sharon Jefferson who scored five tries and Caroline Ducros who counted two.

Singles came from Kathleen Lemieux, Francis Vice, Maureen MacMahon, and Cindy Hendrickson. Linda Miller added a two-point conversion.
