Presently, there is a systematic cyclical review of all Academic units in the various faculties on afive year basis. The objectives of the University in conducting these reviews are the improvement of programs, the establishment of priorities and the allocation of resources.

SSM U refuses W alk- Safe N etw ork club status B Y S T E P H A N IE SM A L L

The Students' Society of McGill University (SSMU) has refused to ratify the Walk-Safe Network'sconstitution because the group is "exclusionary" and "sexist".

For the past two years, WalkSafe Network has organized volunteers to walk students home from the library at night.

The organization was hoping to get its constitution approved this summ er so it could gain club status and be eligible for funding from SSMU. But the SSMU executive denied club status to WalkSafe this summer because its objectives contravene the SSMU constitution and policy.

W alk-Safe c o o rd in a to rs wanted to control the ratio of men and women involved in the network in order "to keep it from degenerating into an es­ cort service," Walk-Safe Coor­ dinator Amy O'Neil said.

"We wanted to make it clear in the constitution that there

would be a majority of women on the executive and that no women would have to walk home with only men," O'Neil said.

But ensuring that the major­ ity of coordinators each year are women "goes against the Students' Society constitution that says that all positions have to be open to everybody," SSMU VP (Internal Affairs) Joanna Wedge said.

SSMU policy also forbids discrimination on the basis of "race, sex, sexual orientation, religious belief, disability, age, financial status, etc."

The McGill Association for International Students (MAIS) was also refused club status this summer because it wanted to reserve certain positions on its executive for international stu­ dents.

In May 1989, the Inter-Frater­ nity Council was "turfed out of Students' Society by the Judi­ cial Board on the basis that it excluded members on the basis of sex," said Wedge.

A N E E Q c a n c e ls d e m o n s t r a t io n L'Association nationale des étudiantes et étudiants (ANEEQ) cancelled today's demonstration against the Bourassa government due to a lack of organization.

ANEEQ had planned to voice its protest against the tutiton fee hike on the one year anniversary of the election of the Bourassa government. Organizers had wanted the demon­ stration to include a num ber of anti-Bourassa groups, includ­ ing representatives from the labour movement.

B o G a n d S e n a t e h o ld jo in t m e e t i n g Board of Governors and Senate met together last week for the second time in ten m onths in an attem pt to improve rela­ tions between the two governing bodies. They had not had such a meeting in the previous eighteen years.

The meeting was held in accordance with recommenda­ tions of the Tripartite Committe, which was set up last fall after the implementation of a casual workers policy sparked controversy and highlighted divisions within McGill's gov­ erning structure.

"It's essential that this year be different than last year. We can't afford to focus our energies on internal dissent," Princi­ pal Johnston said in his address to the joint meeting.

Wedge outlined the options available to the Walk-Safe Net­ work in order to obtain recog­ nition from SSMU. "They could change their constitution, ap­ proach a Councillor to suggest a change to the (SSMU) consti­ tution, or obtain a student mandate through a referendum to exem pt them from the (SSMU) constitution," Wedge said.

O'Neil says the network will only seek a student mandate exempting it from SSMU rules as a last resort.

"We're trying to rewrite the objectives first," O'Neil said.

"But we can't lose sight of the whole philosophy. It's not for protection, it's for female em­ powerment."

Grad stu d en ts unite under RACSQ

Québec graduate students recently incorporated their stu­ dent association, the Regroupe­ ment des associa tions des cycles supérieurs du Québec (RACSQ) in an attem pt to give graduate students a more effective voice in student politics.

A lthough RACSQ shares m any concerns with other stu­ dent associations, such as ac­ cessible education, graduate students feel a province-wide movement is needed to repre­ sent their specific interests.

"Graduatestudentsareolder, often married, and there is an emphasis less on broad educa­ tion and more on research," said McGill Post-G raduate Stu­ dents' Society VP (External) Rhonda Mawhood.

About twenty-five women left the Alley Friday night to join the estimated 500 people for the 10th annual Take Back the Night march opposing violence against women.

The marchers, including about fifteen men asked to walk at the back, chanted slogans and made noise with cans,pots and whistles as they walked from Lafontaine Park dow n St. Denis.

"People can't ignore you," said Sarah Leavitt, U3 Arts. "It's more powerful than walking quietly through the street."

"We were making the statement that violence against women can't be tolerated anymore. And you don't need a m an to stand beside you," said Shirley Meaning, U3 Occupa­ tional Therapy.

"RACSQ is an extension of the PGSS's idea of succession from the SSMU, on the provin­ cial level," said RACSQ VP Eric Darier.

PGSS representatives to Council at McGill want the upcom ing referendum on SSMU m em bership in the Fédération des étudiantes et étudiants du Québec (FEEQ) to only include undergraduate students.

"We don't w ant grads, who have RACSQ, to be forced into FEEQ," Darier said.

SSMU VP (External) Alex Usher admitted, "we don't representgraduatestudentson graduate issues unless they ask for help. We don't feel quali­ fied to represent them."

Unlike other Québec student associations which have been unable to unite all provincial student societies, RACSQ has united all graduate students' societies in Québec. This has lead to a "very good spirit of cooperation," Mawhood said.

"One of the nice things about RACSQ is we have representa­ tion between all schools, even ANEEQ (Association nationale des étudiantes et étudiants du Québec) members."

McGill quits hazardous waste disposal and starts recycling B Y S A R A H L E V IN E

Graduate students at McGill have long felt that these same differences should allow them to seek independence from the Students' Society of McGill University (SSMU). PGSS has voted to succeed from SSMU in two student referendums, but the division has not taken place due to SSMU opposition.

The McIntyre medical build­ ing has stopped operating as a "collection and transfer" point for much of the hazardous waste generated by Montréal hospitals. The staff and equip­ m ent that were used in the old hazardous waste disposal pro­ gram will be used to collect paper for recycling.

"McGill Hazardous Waste Program provided the service of treating hazardous materi­ als for Montréal hospitals for

about 18 years. It was the only service of its kind that handled radioactive waste," said Claude Lahaie, of the Hazardous Waste Program Office.

O v er the past few years private companies have started providing the same service.

Inl986, the Québec govern­ m ent passed a law forbidding the construction of a hazardous waste collection and transfer point within 100 metres of a school.

years after the legislation was passed, that McGill stopped operating its outside waste col­ lection business.

"Legally, it was not a prob­ lem, because there was a grand­ father clause in the 1986 legisla­ tion thatallowed existing waste transfer sites to continue oper­ ating. McGill was granted a temporary permit right away, because there was no alterna­ tive for the government when SEE W A S T E D IS P O S A L . . .

Trust in government: Admission standards increasing is there any left?

In the Septem ber 24 issue of M aclean's M agazine, Editor Kevin Doyle w rote that "there is a sense of hopelessness and pessim ism in C anada. The disillusion­ m ent is flavoured by an aw e­ inspiring collapse of confi­ dence an d trust in politicians and the once-heralded insti­ tutions and system s they op­ erate."

Q uébec's new 'C om m is­ sion Sur L 'avenir Politique et C onstitutionelle d u Q uebec', scheduled to begin public hearings w ithin the m onth, sh o u la have countered this trend; unfortunately, it does not.

La Fédération des étudian­ tes et étu d ian ts d u Québec (FEEQ) lobbied throughout the sum m er to have a stu ­ d en t ap pointed to the C om ­ m ission. N ot receiving any response from the govern­ m ent, FEEQ's VP (U nder­ g rad u ate Affairs) Robert Fabes becam e skeptical, saying th at "this com m ission is becom ing m ore political than substantial. I f s like an old boys netw ork."

Fabes also pointed to the lack of indep sentation < such as native peopl handicapped and the anglo­ phone m inority. A spokes­ person for St. Louis MNA Jacques C hagnon adm itted that she h ad neard m um ­ bling ab out the alleged in­ adequate com position of the Commission.

Dissatisfaction over the m ake u p of the C om m ission is particularly d isturbing be­ cause it indicates a lack of confidence in the representa­ tiveness of the elected m em ­ bers w ho are in a m ajority on the thirty-five m em ber C om ­ mission.

In a telegram to Prem ier Bourassa, FEEQ President Nicolas P lourde said that it does n o t m ake sense to talk about the future of a society w ithout consulting future generations. This appeal for direct representation only indicates th at university stu d en ts (w ho are, for the

Even worse is the sense that the governm ent does not trust its ow n ability to produce recom m endations that will be satisfactory to Québeckers. This C om m ission will have a substantial num ber of nonM NA m em bers, including four representatives from the business sector and four representatives from the trade union m ovem ent.

A lthough increased citizen participation in the decision-m aking process is encouraging, this extraordi­ nary m ove provokes ques­ tions about the effectiveness of governm ent. If the C om m ission will be travel­ ling around Québec consult­ ing w ith individuals and representatives of interest groups, w hy is it necessary to actually p u t m em bers of som e of these g ro u p s on the Com mission? The answ er is political: the Q uébec gov­ ernm ent w ants visible sup­ po rt from w hat Fabes calls the "m overs and shakers" of the province because it is w orried that w ithout such support, Q uébeckers will not accept the recom m enda­ tions of the Com mission.

The governm ent is afraid th a ttn e Québec population has lost faith in tne system .

Doyle ended his editorial on a hopeful note, saying C anadians w ould probably be receptive to discussions about the future. But w hat kind of future will there be if C anadians no longer trust the dem ocratic process?

At a joint m eeting of the Board of G overnors a n d Senate last week Principal Johnston out­ lined the university's intention to raise adm ission standards in order to im prove the quality of education.

Enrolm ent in som e faculties this fall is "dow n slightly by deliberate design, particularly in A rts an d M anagem ent, Johnston said.

D espite a decrease in underE ad u ate enrolm ent over the styear,McGill iscurrently the m ost populous i t has ever been.

There are abou 1 22,000 students enrolled full time, one quarter of w hom are graduate students.

Q uality of education dim in­ ishes as professors find them ­

selv es te a c h in g o v e rsiz e d classes. To solve this problem , the university is raising its adm issions standards, espe­ cially in the faculties of M an­ agem ent and Arts. From reports prepared for the Principal's office, the faculty of A rts was reduced by 182 seats w ith first year students accounting for m ost of the difference. The fac­ ulty of Science is d ow n 55 seats as com pared to 1989.

The need for higher standards creates a dilem m a for the ad ­ m inistration, how ever. By de­ creasing the num ber of students over the next few years, gov­ ernm ent funding to McGill decreases because schools are com pensated on a per student basis. W ith an enorm ous debt,

McGill cannot afford to give up m onetary backing.

The adm inistration hopes to overcom e its deficit through higher tuition fees. ”We should press tow ards achieving (tuition fee) levels equal to tne C anadian average," Johnston said.

A pproxim ately half of the 14,60/ stu dents w ho applied to McGill for this year w ere ac­ cepted. A bout naif of those accepted actually enrolled.

The old "H azardous W aste D isposal Program " has be­ com e the "W aste M anage­ m ent C om m ittee", and will report directly to the U niver­ sity Safety Office.

"The changeover will chan­ nel the resources freed by the end of the collection of w aste outside the university into the recycling program ," Lahaie said. Trucks used to pick u p w aste will now also pick u p discarded office p ap er for re­ cycling.

The best w ay for C anadian In­ ter-U niversity Athletic Union (CIAU) athletes to stay clear of d ru g allegations is to know w hich substances are banned, and to consult a doctor. O ther­ wise athletes m ay inadvertently deliver positive results w hen selected at random for a Dop­ ing Control test.

In an effort to keep am ateur sports fair and athletes aw are, McGill is involved in a CIAU established antidoping policy.

"W e're here to assist people in m aking decisions," says M en's Basketball Coach Ken Shildroth. "We w ant to explain our position on doping, the conse­ quences, and w here we stand."

inadvertant positive results, rem inded of the consequen­ ces of taking perform ance­ enhancing drugs, and the eth­ ics of fair play.

"I think it's espe­ cially im portant for rookies to have these sem inars," she says, "but it's good for the veterans to keep us u p to date and aw are of any changes in the rules."

trol tests. Failure or refusal to sign renders the athlete im me­ d iately ineligibe for CIAU com petition, and is considered the equivalent of a positive test result.

McGill athletes selected for testing are notified by a Doping C ontrol (DC) official and m ust report to the DC Station accom­ panied by a witness. An official of the sam e sex supervises the passing of the urine sample, w hich is split into tw o separate

sam ples.

Test results are available w ithin 10 days. If the first sam ple is negative, the second is destroyed and the athlete is allow ed to retu rn to the game.

If, how ever, the first is positive, the athlete is barred from fur­ ther com petition until the sec­ ond has been analyzed. Should this sam ple test positive, the athlete is suspended from play for one year.

Coach Shildroth believes the

antidoping policy at McGill is essential for fair play. N o one has ever refused to sign the contract or subm it to testing, and he sees this as indicative of the McGill m entality. "O ther schools m ay be m ore perform ­ ance-oriented or have m ore m oney for the program s, b u t if you play varsity sports here to augm ent your education, and c o m p e te at y o u r h ig h e s t potential, then w e're doing a good job." □

The vicious cycle of steroids

Until tw o years ago, w h en Ben Johnson's steroid use cost C an­ ada an Olym pic gold medal, m any athletes felt that in order to have any chance of success they had to take steroids.

P e r f o r m a n c e - e n h a n c in g dru g s such as anabolic steroids actually seemed to pile m uscle upon muscle, and athletes ex­ perienced unbelievable im-

provem ents in their perform ­ ance.

It is difficult to stop, once an athlete begins abusing these drugs, because of the psycho­ logical difficulties inherent in accepting the subsequent d e ­ crease in physical bulk. Users com e to depend on the d ru g to m aintain and further enhance their body image.

Disorganization can’t mute the power of PE’s message

BY GALLAGHER MACKAY Public Enemy has the rep u ta­ tion of being both a good band and an an g ry one. They proved th at they deserved the rep u ta­ tion in concert at the Rialto on F riday night.

Despite a show that w as m ore poorly organized than m any high school talent nights; d e­ spite opening acts that w ere nauseatingly bad in tw o differ­ en t an d yet equally abom inable ways; an d despite being m ore than tw o h o urs late for the first show , Public Enérny fought the pow er, and to judge by the audience, they em erged victo­ rious.

They opened thecpncert with m aterial from their new album , Fear of a Black Planet.

The show did not begin to m ove until the m usic took a break and Chuck D took to the m ike in an im pressive display of rhetoric, including a som e­ w hat surprising com m endation of the M ontréal police force, w ho had secured Flavor Flav's passage across the border. De­ lays there w ere responsible for the tw o hour wait.

Flavor Fla v looked m ore like a cam p counsellor on skit night than a tow ering symbol of black rage.N onetheless,he delivered

a clear m essage. "A nyone w ho is a racist here can suck m y dick," he proclaim ed in unso­ licited response to the m edia w ho have accused the band of racism, bigotry, and sexism. " T h e y 're a g re a t b a n d .

They're black, an d they are political," explained one fan.

"They have a m eaning."

A fifteen year old fan ex­ plained th at Public Enem y aren 't bigots b u t that "they show how it really is on the streets, in the U.S." He w asn't uncom fortable w ith the vio­ lence in their lyrics, doubting that anyone "pays attention to the w ords anyw ay." H e w as certain of one thing, though.

"This censorship is garbage. It only m akes a band m ore excit­ ing, and m ore people will listen to the lyrics."

The type of violent outbreaks w hich have plagued rap con­ certs in the U.S. w ere ap p a r­ ently not a m ajor concern for the MUC police officers in at­ tendance. Lt. Ken Lapointe w as w illing to com m ent that "w e had m ore security (per ticket) for N ew Kids on the Block," and denied any unusual con­ cern about violence associated w ith the controversial group.

In Goodfellas, Scorsese exam ­ ines n o t only the intricate cam raderie and vicious brutal­ ity of life in theN ew York Mafia, but, as well, the Am erican p u blic's ongoing love affair

In doing so, he is able to u n ­ ravel the attraction w hich or­ ganized crim e holds both for its real-life participants and for those w ho follow the gangsters' exploits.

dream s of being a gangster in the sam e w ay m ost k ids in his neighborhood dream of play­ ing for the Yankees. For H enry, m obsters are "m ovie stars w ith m uscle." The 'w iseguys', as the gangsters are know n, seem to be the epitom e of the A m erican Dream. They take w h at they w ant, w hile others "w ithout balls" w aste aw ay in dead end jobs.

As H enry becom es m ore deeply involved in the w orld of the w iseguys, how ever, he re­ alizes that his opulent lifestyle carries a hefty pricetag. Brutal violence becom es p a rt of his everyday Mafia life.

Violence is a w ay of life for w iseguys, an d anyone could at any tim e be in danger of sw ift and deadly retaliation.

The venue w hich started the M ontréal jazz festival and b ro u g h t in blues, reggae, and w orld beat acts from around the globe is open again, big­ ger and better than ever.

The new Rising Sun at 5380 St. L aurent w as sw orn in by blues great B uddy G uy on the thirteenth of Septem ber, fol­ low ed th at w eekend by sep­ tu ag en a rian jazz d y n am o Dizzy Gillespie.

The response to both show s w as overw helm ing. N obody w as hap p ier about the m as­

sive tu rn o u t than club m an ­ ager D oudou Boicel, w ho said "That w eekend, everybody w as there - people I h av en 't seen for years - they w ere there".

Boicel cited the new loca­ tion as p art of the reason for the club's great success. "I think this place is the right place, because St. L aurent is the place in M ontréal right now. M ost of the people w ho used to com e to the Rising Sun live around here".

Unlike the cartoonish ex­ cesses of Wild A t Heart, Scors­ ese's violence is the m ost gutw renchingly grim in Am eri­ can cinem a. Yet it is by no m eans gratuitous. Rather, it serves to pow erfully contrast the rom anticized vision of the gun-totin' A m erican hero, w ith the actual acts of b rutal­ ity that these characters glo­ rify.

The cast is uniform ly su­ perb. Robert D eN iro and Joe Pesci are both excellent as H en ry 's reckless m entors, and Liotta is m esm erizing as the unstable y et ultim ately likeable Henry.

C inem atographer Michael Ballhaus has shot the m ost visually stu nning m ovie of

the year. The film is rife w ith stark and poignant im ages which m ust be seen to be ap­ preciated. To his credit, Scors­ ese has avoided the directo­ rial excesses w hich m arred som e of his previous efforts such as The Color of Money and After Hours. In Goodfellas, every cam era m ovem ent is significant, contributing to the focus of the film as a whole.

In 1980, Scorsese directed Raging Bull, a film which w ould not be surpassed in the decade which followed.

The sam e m ay be true for Goo­ dfellas. So leave the Rolling Stone covers and gu est spots on A rsenio H all to David Lynch and Spike Lee. For now, M artin Scorsese seems content to sim ply m ake the best m ovies around. □

"I w an t to prom ote black culture in M ontréal," he said. "I w an t everybody in M ontréal, especially the w hite com m u­ nity, to com e and see black culture, to becom e exposed to black culture".

The club will also feature "things like experim ental the­ atre, u n d erg ro u n d things that I w an t to do," he said. Boicel is quickly turn in g his desire to reality, scheduling num erous w ell-know n reggae, r&b, and funk acts in the com ing m onths, as well as becom ing involved in A pril's black theatre w ork­ shop.

The new location is an excel­ lent venue for Boicel to realize his ideas. The club is a con­ verted theatre, its size falling neatly betw een th at of Club Soda an d the Spectrum . Per­

form ers will be able to draw a respectable crow d, while m ain­ taining a senseof intim acy w ith their audience. The acoustics are superb from stagefront to foyer, and, w hen the crow d size is k ept u n d er control, the club is extrem ely com fortable.

The only problem th at the Rising Sun seem s to have so far is it's ow n popularity- the B uddy G uy concert sold to a triple capacity audience, all of w hom w ere adm itted, leaving the audience no room in w hich to move.

Boicel is attem pting to rectify this situation by scheduling m any of his m ajor headliners for tw o nights But it rem ains to be seen w hether or not bignam e acts (especially alterna­ tive-crowd d raw s such as Sonic Youth and Jane's Addiction) will experience overcrow ding as a serious difficulty.

The new venue is certain to becom e as m uch of an institu­ tion as the old Rising Sun, not only draw ing back it's regular crow d, b u t giving the entire M ontréal com m unity a chance to experience Boicel's wideranging cultural vision.

The characters presen t m u n d an e m axim s akin to the obvious revelations of stoned sixteen year olds, such as the less-thanprofound, "N atu re is the w in­ d o w to the w orld".

H ow ever, The DuckVariations m ain w eaknesses lie in its uninspired staging and direc­ tion. McFarthi ng seem s to have overlooked the p lay's am bigu­ ity w ith respect to place and

The Duck Variations, w ritten in 1972, is one of M am et's earliest attem pts at cynical avant-guard theater. It is no surprise th at he w as not the im m ediate toast of the tow n u p o n its publication. Director Bridget M cFarthing explained inform ally,"it's about every­ thing and nothing".

The p lay 's subjects are tw o old m en w ho w atch ducks in the park and w ho M am et has described as "incapable of w orking and of no use to their society." Players' Theatre regu­ lars Duncan A ppleton and Ken Cam eron are well cast sta ge foils as Emil and George respec­ tively. The p air ex p o u n d on diverse subjects such as the

time. The beauty of the script lies in its flexibility for transla­ tion in time. It m ight have been m ore effectively situated in C an ad a's park of the N ineties, W est E dm onton Mall ("The Trained Dolphin Variations" perhaps?)

The transitions betw een vi­ gnettes are clum sy. The ad d i­ tion by M cFarthing of Voice (Paul M urray), w ho announces the titles of each of the vari­ ations, is disruptive. The nam e of each scene, is w ith o u t fail, ridiculously p arroted by either m an in the first line. The play as a w hole lacks any sense of m usicality.

Mercifully short, at u n d er two hours, The Duck Variations, o ffic ia lly c lo s e s S e p te m ­ ber 29,1990. But stick a fork in it, honey. This du ck is do n e al­ ready. □

BY BRENT BANNERM AN P erhaps there should be a n ew cliché: y o u r best offence is a good defence. The Redm en football season is looking that w ay as the defence saved the day, leading McGill to alO -8 u p set victory over the fifthranked Concordia Stingers in the annual Shaughnessy C up game.

A rain-soaked crow d of 1400 w atched in M olson Stadium as McGill held the Stingers to only one m ajor score, blocked two field goals and had one inter­ ception. A pick-off by Franz W ellington w ith less than three m inutes to play seem ed to seal the victory for the Redm en; however, McGill's inept offence gave the Stingers tw o m ore chances to score.

In the Stingers next posses­ sion, w ith the score 1 0 - 8, the Stinger offence looked poised to w in the gam e as they set up for a field goal from the 25 yard line with thirty seconds rem ain­

ing in the gam e. The special team s came through in the crunch as M cGill's Robert Tay­ lor broke through the line and blocked the attem pt.

"N obody touched m e and I got right through and dove for the ball," said Taylor, a third year Education major. It w as this type of big play defence that gave the R edm en their first w in of the season.

The defence w as led by the outstanding w ork of linem en Jeff Chalice, G raham W ebb and linebacker Ken Friedm an w ho w as in on eleven tackles. De­ fensive C o o rd in ato r, M ike M aurovich, had nothing b u t praise for his players.

McGill w ent in hard in the early m inutes, setting a tone for the gam e that C oncordia m et eagerly. Tensions w ere heightened w ith high tackles throughout-a taboo in rugby.

Indeed packed houses are an integral p art of the story.

Each year, w hen Q ueen's com es to McGill they d raw the largest crow d o f the season. U nfortunately there are m ore Q ueen's students sp o rtin g p u rp le than McGill fans in atten d en ce The gam e alm ost becomes secondary as boisterous fans d ro w n them selves in beer and lose their voices in incessant chanting for their team.

O ne thing th at separates this rivalry from th at w ith Concordia, is th at McGill and Q ueen's players have a m utual respect for each other. The gam e is played cleanly a n d is void of the cheap shot m entality that the Stingers bring to a gam e.

The intensity of the rival™ on the field is also translated into the stands.

In the Victoria Boat Race they cam e in behind only the C anadian N ational squad, and an A m erican chal­ lenge eight, proving them selves the second-fastest crew in C an­ ada. This victory also m arked them as the fastest true univer­ sity level crew in the nation.

This year the club w ants to prove to the athletic adm ini­ stration, as well as the other schools, th at McGill row ing is back on the national m ap.

"O bviously o u r short term goal is to place well or w in at the O .U .'s," said Jennifer Mactaggart, President of the McGill R ow ing Club, "Last year we p u t as m any boats on the w ater as there w ere row ers to fill them, b u t this year w e d o n 't have the

funds to d o that, so w e have to concentrate on boats th at will win at the O ntario C ham pion­ ships, an d then translate this result into an increased am m ount of funding for the 1991 season.

"G etting m ore funding is definitely a long term goal of ours, and it has to begin this year." says M actaggart.

D espite the cuts in club size, m anyofthe row ers and coaches feel that they are read y to leave the others in their wakes. An­ drew Tees, coach of the Varsity W om en's Lightw eight eight thinks his oarsw om en will be verycom petative. "W e'vebeen w orking very hard and defi­ nitely have the potential to be one of the top crew s ou t there," he stated.

The N ovice crew s are also providing great support. On the w om en's side 70 girls w ere vying for only 16 seats. □

The Lady Stingers' strength can be credited to a good re­ cruiting year w ith prom ising rookies from John Abbott Col­

lege, the num ber one threat to o u r cham pionship team last year. This force is com ple­ m ented by the leadership of six provincial team veterans. Says A ssistant Coach C hris Regim­ bai of her team: "W e've got a lot of rookies this year w ho are learning the gam e quick. We cam e in u n d er­ dogs and gave them a good fight."

Concordia m ay well prove to be the team to beat this year. N o doubt the M artlets w o n 't w ant to give u p their cham pionship status w ithout a good fight, guaranteeing a tough, challeng­ ing and entertaining season of w om an's rugby. H opes ride on Ann Coyle and Val M atthew both provincial players for Que­ bec, and the experience of play­ ers such as club president Kariann A arup.

Sum m ing u p the outing, Coach Kaplan reflected that "it's really good th a tith a p p e n ned so early in the season, giv­ ing u s direction for o u r prac­ tices" □

W ith this crucial victory the R edm en are now 1 and 1 in the regular season. Québec wins are m ore im portant for M cGill's playoff standing than any oth­ ers. H ow ever, w ith another week of practice and the confi­ dence gained from S aturday's w in, th e R e d m e n -Q u e e n 's gam e of this com ing w eekend should be a dandy.
