BY RICH LATOUR First year students expecting to m ove into Solin Hall this weekend were sent to the YMCA to wait for construction to be completed before they could m ove into their rooms in McGill's newest residence.

"We were asked by McGill

University to lodge approxi­ mately fifty-two students," said Guy Jugmohun, a receptionist at the YMCA on Stanley Street.

Jugmohun did not know how long the students would be staying.

FEEQ is hoping to capitalize on the weakness of L'Association Nationale des Étudiantes et Étudiants du Québec (ANEEQ) by recruiting additional student associations through referendums that will be held across the province in October. ANEEQ has been without an executive since quorum was broken at executive elections this summer.

Travel Cuts robbery prom pts calls for increased security SSMU Executive Director Don McGerrigle is calling for "a more holistic approach" to security on campus following a hold-up at Voyages Campus.

Last month, an armed gunman made off with just under a thousand, dollars from the business in the University Center basement. The manager will be installing a surveillance camera and possibly a buzzer alarm in the office.

McGerrigle is planning to meet with campus security this week to discuss security improve ments.

N ew setting created for n ew food $600,000 in renovations to campus cafeterias were completed in time for the fall session by Scott's Food Services, SSMU's newly contracted food and beverage company.

Scott's committed itself to the renovations during contract negotiations last year when it agreed to invest a minimum of $600,000 to "refresh and improve operations."

Cafeterias in the Union, Management and Arts buildings were completely remodelled. According to Jean-Charles Viens, Mar­ keting Coordinator of Scott's Food Services, and the former SSMU V.P. finance responsible for negotiating the new contract, Scott's is attempting to "transform the cafeteria into a cozy restauranttype atmosphere."

Legal information clinic expands The McGill Legal Information Clinic (formerly Legal Aid) has acquired a third office in the Union Building basement in an attempt to improve service to students.

"Having only one desk per office will guarantee confidential­ ity," said Executive Director Ron Laurenstein.

"Our focus is accessibility and simplicity. We want to be able to inform more people (about their legal rights)," said Laurenstein.

Even though the residence was supposed to be ready by the end of the summer, Con­ struction and Project Manager Derrick Osborn was satisfied that the renovations were so far advanced in under a ■year.

"A job of this size and com­ plexity would normally take twelve months to complete," said Osborn.

First year student Jonathan Kalsched and his father toured the building in disbelief on Fri­ day, carefully walking around the construction-ridden site.

But Kalsched was optimistic about the residence.

"I think it will be an ideal place for students (once com­ pleted)," said Kalsched. "This place has potential."

BY SH A NNO N ALDINGER The Students' Society of McGill University (SSMU) has established two $3,000 scholar­ ships that are financed by a contribution from the new food and beverage service on cam­ pus.

The S tu d en ts' S ociety Awards of Distinction will be

awarded annually to returning students on the basis of leader­ ship and academic perform­ ance. According to SSMU VP (University Affairs) Deborah Pentesco, the scholarship will be the second most prestigious and lucrative award within the university.

Funds for the awards will be generated from the new ly

formed $50,000 SSMU en­ dowed scholarship fund do­ nated by Scott's Food Service as one of the terms of their contract. SSMU had sought a food service company who would become involved in university programs.

Sequels detract from movie magic It all started innocently enough. James Bond was a very exciting character and the demand to see him battle more and uglier villians seemed quite harmless. Then he started to appear in as many m ovies as number of countries he fought in per installment. Next thing w e knew, he wasn't Sean Con­ nery or even Roger Moore any longer, but some guy from television w ho fulfilled the prerequisite by having a suave British accent. N ow , there are still various models hanging all over him as he hangs from a plane, but it's som ehow not the same. All of the Bond movies seem to blend together and by last count, the most recent epi­ sode was called N e v e r S a y N e v e r L iv e A n d L et A c q u ir e A L ic e n se T o K ill A n O c to p u s s y

or something like that.

The continuing James Bond saga has become worn out and unimaginative. However, the worse crime is that the never-ending Bond cycle is partially to blame for the overall sequel craze that has swept through the American film industry in the past few years. Hollywood executives in all of the major studios have been stung by this epidemic.

"It's a disease", says Le­ onard Mai tin, film critic and historian. "The movers and shakers in Hollywood are very nervous and looking for something that will perform just well enough for them.

The trend is alarming."

Gradually, more and more movies these days are looking the same. The gunfire might kill an innocent bystander on an escalator instead of in a seedy nightclub but the ingenious concept is identical, however old and tired.

When the dust from the fiercely competitive Christ­ mas season clears, a record number of sequels will have been produced in 1990. A total of 21 follow-ups will have been thrown at the moviegoing public this year, in the guise of fresh and original entertainment.

This past summer was particulary "fresh" as many of the feature presentations included such originals as B ack T o T h e F u tu r e 3 , G r e m lin s 2, D ie H a r d 2, R o b o co p 2, Y o u n g G u n s 2, T h e T w o Jakes, A n o th e r 4 8 H R S and E x o r c is t 3.

Why all of these nauseating revivals? Simple. An Eddie Murphy flic, for example is going to make Paramount a cool $55 or $60 mill even if it is the aptly titled A n o th e r 4 8 H R S . Why bother with artistic martyrdom and make a socially acute film that is high on quality but low on profit?

You would only be hurting yourself. A s e x , lies a n d v id e ­ o ta p e or a R o g e r & M e only com es around every so often.

For every low budget film like that, there are sixty (per major studio) that never see the light of day or the dark of movie theatre.

Considering the mindboggling high costs of film production nowadays, the powers that beget screenplays are undoubtedly more likely to go with a "sure thing".

An established successful formula, complete with familiar characters and a similar if not an entirely duplicated plot, have become the easist to exploit. Although sequels are more expensive than originals, with stars insisting on higher wages (Bruce Willis earned $7.5 million for Dying Harder), the extra cost is apparently worth decreasing the risk of a flop.

Don't anticipate any drop­ off in the number of sequels in the near future, either.

Early estimations show that there will be in the area of 40 such regurgitations in 1991.

In fact, Scott's Food Services, the new food people on campus, have invested over $600 000 in renovations to increase the quality of service and to bring some excitement to the food service of McGill University.

Manchu Wok, the most ex­ citing addition in the Univer­ sity Center, is Canada's leading retailer of Chinese cuisine. Not only will it offer you a menu "a la carte" but it will also feature daily spe­ cials, combo plates, and a full line of hot and cold bever­ ages. Manchu Wok will be open late every night (up to 2am on Thursday, Friday and Saturday), and provide for a take out service.

Also in the Union Building, the food court has been upgraded to provide an improved salad bar, a selec­ tion of gourmet coffees, full hot and cold meals, pastries.

news $24,000 information kiosk replaces tables in Union

BY CHARLES ROBISON The Students' Society of McGill University (SSMU) installed a $24,000 information kiosk in a space formerly reserved for clubs and other McGill groups to distribute information and to publicize their activities.

SSMU set up the kiosk in the foyer of the Union building. The two tables formerly

SSMU VP (Internal Affairs) Joanna Wedge called the kiosk "a good step in com­ munication of students " The booth, which will be staffed by paid students, will be "a two way thing, in which information can be given out and we can get feed-back," said Wedge.

The decision to install the kiosk was made without extensive consultation from clubs or other organizations.

Although no policy is yet in place for the role of the booth, clubs and other nonSSMU organizations will be free to leave information at the kiosk. "Everybody is invited to drop off information," said Wedge. "I don't foresee the kiosk limiting clubs' effectiveness."

The Québec Public Interest Research Group (QuébecPIRG) was an active user of the area. This non-SSMU group was one of the few organizations with staff on campus this summer. However QuébecPIRG Office Manager, David Reycraft, said he "was not informed at all" of the kiosk and hopes it "isn't solely a SSMU thing."

Wedge explained that consultation with concerned groups was via "an informal process". She asked the few club representatives around during the summer casually about their view of the change.

SSMU Council approved the kiosk during a special summer meeting July 11. Peter Thomas was the only one of three clubs' representatives to Council who attended.

He voted for the kiosk because there will be no loss of table space and clubs can leave information at the booth.

"I had a few objections. These questions were about the moving of the tables and monetary (considerations)," said Thomas.

Since the project was being approved only in principle at the time, Thomas was not aware of the $24,000 price tag when he voted.

And he still has some doubts: "My big question is: how many students will ask questions?"

SSMU spends big on red chicken m ascot

BY GALLAGHER MACKAY This year, a big bird is hitting the McGill campus. The Stu­ dents' Society of McGill Uni­ versity (SSMU) comissioned a Martlet mascot over the sum­ mer.

In the wild kingdom, the martlet is a small bird that has no feet, because it never lands.

A collection of three martlets also appears on the university and SSMU crests.

"We wanted to promote Stu­ dents' Society events and to establish a link between our logo and events which we spon­ sor and endorse," said SSMU VP (Internal Affairs) Joanna Wedge.

According to the Martlet it­ self, the link between the logo and its presence has yet to be fully established.

"I was called a lobster and a pink penguin, and I'm called a chicken by a lot of people," said the mascot.

Self-promotion for the Soci­ ety was a major goal for the SSMU Executive this summer.

Projects include pens, matches, mugs and address books em­ blazoned with the three birds as well as SSMU pamphlets and the new information kiosk in the Union Building lobby.

The promotion campaign has not come cheap: the total cost for this summer's projects was estimated at $31,000 in the Council's budget. $3000 was spent on the design and con­ struction of the bird. Presently there are two employees receiv­ ing seven dollars an hour to wear the suit.

"The bird should last at least

five years, maybe even longer with good care. The cost will be amortized quite nicely," said SSMU VP (Finance) Jane H ow ­ ard.

"The Martlet isn't for regular use," commented Wedge. "But when there's a need for a bit of a morale booster, that's where the bird will come in."

The Martlet sees its job in the same way. It is responsible for "spreading jollillity and telling frosh what a Martlet is, even though I have feet and Mar­ tlets don't. I want to boost the McGill spirit and make people aware that the Students' Soci­ ety exists."

The bird may make appear­ ances at football games and

other athletic events.

However, "as far as we know it's still only a SSMU bird," commented Kariann Aarup, Athletics Representative to Council.

The bird is excited about the prospect of attendance at sport­ ing events.

"I think the crowd would like it. It'd be good for school spirit and help get them riled up. But I sure don't want to be the chicken at Kill McGill," (the annual Queen's v McGill foot­ ball game.)

The successful bid to design the Student Society mascot came from Jeff Leblanc, whose artwork has appeared in the R e d H e r r in g , McGill's humour magazine.

But Usher is concerned that students' needs will be "over­ shadowed in the inter-departmental power battles that will no doubt occur in the course of writing the Master Plan."

The Campus Physical Devel­ opment Caucus is intended to strengthen student input.

"Students will be able to get together and decide what to put forward in each committee," said Usher.

"The caucus will get infor­ mation from various faculties and make sure they're not over­ looked. Students will be well briefed and be able to present a coherent plan."

Tavenas supports the oppor­ tunity for students to structure their input into the develop­ ment of the plan, but is "reluc­ tant to see an initiative that would lead to 'me too' type demands."

"I welcome the initiative, but it's a big responsibility to en­ sure the input is constructive," said Tavenas.

news Musical W elcome Week attendance up over past years

BY LISA HARRISON Chairperson Jim Delorey is pleased with results of Wel­ come Week so far. "We've had excellent attendance. The Au­ gust portion of Welcome Week is usually a lot slower than the week in September, bu t thi s year w e've had better attendance than any other," he said.

Delorey explained that he chose not to present any speak­ ers this year because he didn't feel it was seasonal. "Speakers are more appropriate around exam time when students are procrastinating and need an

excuse to get out, but don't want to be out late partying."

Delorey programmed a di­ verse choice of music, all of it original. There are no cover bands, and sixteen of the eight­ een groups featured are Cana­ dian.

Welcome Week is given a subsidy of four thousand dol­ lars by the Student's Society.

Charging admission and reve­ nues from food and beverage sales make up the difference.

Unlike many universities, McGill's orientation is not fo­ cused primarily on humiliat­ ing inexperienced students.

Several Ontario universities,

notably Queen's and Western, have received a great deal of criticism.

Most events are open to the entire campus population, with the exception of the Fresher program in the first week.

The fresher program is de­ signed to allow new students a chance to meet other people.

"The Playfair in the Union Ball­

room was an activity that was purely to allow us to meet people. It was also a bit of a motivational seminar to make us all feel good about being here at McGill," explained Jessica Small, a freshman Arts student.

Her only complaint about the program was its lack of adver­ tising. Some of her friends missed the activities because "if

you didn't go to the Orienta­ tion Resource Center in the Union, you wouldn't have known about the events," she said.

Residence provides some of the best opportunities for new students to make friends, a place which is just as friendly to people who don't live there. □

entertainment Cannes winner: a searing, surreal drama

BY GALLAGHER-MACKAY When you strike a match, a chemical reaction occurs, and from saltpeter, sulphur and carbon, energy is released. To the naked eye, there is a flame.

As every child is taught, fire is dangerous. But no child needs to be taught that fire is exciting.

David Lynch has earned a reputation for being one of the most exciting and dangerous

filmmakers working in the United States. B lu e V e l v e t , re­ leased in 1988, was billed as the most talked about film of the year: a result of its violent combination of sex, violence and the American Dream.

Lynch then co-wrote, produced and partly directed T w in P e a k s , a soap opera gone wild, which set new limits for "acceptable prime time viewing" last tele­ vision season.

W ild a t H e a r t, conciously recalls T h e W iz a r d of O z ., O z is nota friendly land, filled as it is with witches and unfriendly forests. Even things that seemed cheerful and bright are some­ how slightly warped.

The U.S.A. in which the film is set has something of the char­ acter of a fantasy land. Yet however fantastic the scenar­ ios and characters, Lynch never lets us off the hook in saying

"this isn't Kansas anymore."

His vision of the heartland is filled with a whole tribe of people who kill for money and pleasure and unexplained passionsand with mad, evil women who "just love their daughter a little bit too much."

Through this land voyage two lovers become completely al­ ienated from the surrounding world. They are no longer in­ nocent, but remain relatively pure. The m ovie tells the love story of Lula (Laura Dern) and Sailor (Nicolas Cage) as they flee towards the West Coast in a convertible.

The violence of the movie is brutal and as^ intimate as its depictions of sex. Watching it is intensely disturbing. The effect is not a numbing of the senses, but rather a purging of the popculture induced indifference towards violent death. Why shouldn't it make us sick?

The m ovie does not aim for verisimilitude. Performances, therefore, cannot be measured in terms of representations of emotion, but in terms of their loyalty to the surreal narrative.

There is throughout the movie a sense that the actors were so

many mannequins executing the grand vision of an artist.

Which is not to say the per­ formances are merely symbolic.

Dern and Cage are an odd pairing, but a successful one.

Lula wanders through the m ovie wearing leather and lin­ gerie. At twenty, she is a wild young woman,scarred by traumatic past and frantically in love with Sailor, a manslaughterer, a robber and a man who lacked parental guidance.

They are surrounded by a stunning array of sordid char­ acters: Lula's mother, a golden, manipulative madwoman in the grand tradition of the old South is portrayed stunningly

by Diane Ladd. Willem Dafoe plays a slimy ant of an ex-ma­ rine who is joined in Big Tuna, Texas by a a tawdry harlot, played by Isabella Rossellini, who once had a relationship of sorts with Sailor.

The movie is as brilliant and disturbing as anything else Lynch has ever masterminded.

It is a slamdance of a movie, with Elvis in between. It is hard to review this movie without ending on an imperative note: go see it.

Second City Second To No One

BY ADAM STERNBERGH A new generation of comedic talent was on display in Pollack Hall last Wednes­ day. The Second City National Touring Company had a rambunctious and receptive crowd on their feet following over two hours of high energy goofiness ranging from the politically acute to the unabashedly scatalogical.

The skill and success of the troupe's six young performers comes as no surprise to anyone familiar with Second City. It has become a comedic institution on both sides of the border in the thirty years since the first group was founded in Chicago.

The first hour of W ednesday's program consisted of sketch comedy, developed

The generally quick and amusing vignettes featured everything from a flatulent astronaut (big laughs) to the obligatory anti-Concordia jibes (bigger laughs) to the most unforgettable shower scene since "Psycho" (uproarious laughter).

The next set was improvisational. Audience suggestions were incorporated into spontaneously generated scenes.

The immediacy of improvisation partially explains its attraction for the perform­ ers. "In this kind of theatre, there's no 'fourth wall'." said groupmember Alan Catlin. Fellow member Rob Smith added, "It also forces you to be up on current affairs."

Second City has long been notorious for its risky political material, and the

Pollack Hall show was no exception. At one point, the audience was treated to an offcolour and off-key song encouraging Brian Mulroney to smooch the "smooth cheeks" of George Bush.

The Second City National Touring Company was the first rung on a ladder to stardom for performers such as Bill Murray, Jim Belushi and Martin Short. The troupe travels extensively across Canada, following a gruelling schedule that saw them booked for twenty-one shows in August alone.

Compatability is not a problem for the group.

Buhrle collection goes beyond impressionisrr

BY SUSAN ROGERS "The Impressionists" is a misnomer for the current exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts. In fact, what is on display is the collection of paintings of a certain Emil Buhrle.

Buhrle's collection offers a unique look at the evolution of 18th and 19th Century European art. The Masters are well represented, spanning from Tiepolo and Ingres to Matisse and Kandinsky.

The styles displayed in this exhibition include Venetian view painting, academic still life, Cubism, Fauvism, complete abstraction and, oh yes, Impressionism.

These works are arranged in a loose chronological order. The pamphlet that accom­

panies the exhibit discusses the w ay Buhrle procured these \ paintings in order of acquisition would have given the vie\ he reacted to these works.

One should be prepared for a few disturbing works. This Manet's The Suicide.

There are some particularly captivating works including Van Gogh, the tranquil Poppies near Vétheuil, by Monet or tl Dog In Front O f The World, by Franz Marc.

nment Experiencing Life: “The Poisoning of Reality”

BY BRIARLY HARDAGE Canadian Richard Purdy demonstrates an intense abil ity to disorient the viewer through his art in his retrospective, "The Poisoning of Reality." Built completely into the floor, and covering over 4000 square feet, Purdy's works are positively subversive. They explore eve­ rything from ancient civiliza­ tion to m odern m edicine through the creation of scien­ tifically correct, yet completely fictitious cultures.

One of his more curious works, "Furiae: The History of Culture X" is a rendition of one in d iv id u a l's sch izop hren ic world, complete with scale models of the Xians' houses and an aerial view of their village.

A pamphlet explaining the history of mythical psychiatric patient Richard Freeman and the progression of his "illness" is available upon entrance to the exhibit. It is an extremely valuable tool in making one's way throughout the various displays. "Freeman eventually died of spontaneous combus­ tion," Purdy notes sorrowfully, "all they found was a pair of slip p ers and som e lo o se change."

Created in 1980, his exhibit "Eschatology" includes a 45minute video, newspaper clip­ pings, and a book detailing the spread of the fictional modernday plague Virus X, which wiped

The fantastic aspect of these works is that if one is no t a ware that they are non-existent, the presentation is almost enough to make these animal hybrids believable, which seems to be Purdy's goal. In a simply presented, extremely coherent manner, Richard Purdy's retrospective is one to be seen, and then ex­ perienced, by all those inter­ ested in the possibilities of life.

Vietnam ese Food With A Vengeance

BY MARC DROUIN It is rare for McGill students to dine anywhere they can't walk.

Yet along Cote des N eiges b etw een Appleton and Goyer a small Vietnamese community has been established in recent years which offers the student a veritable gourmet stomping ground which is both inexpensive and tasty.

A number of small restaurants and food shops provide an inter­ esting array of oriental delica­ cies. These range from roasted duck to mixed vegetable plates, from bowls of steaming noodles to pots of jasmine tea. Although the majority of restaurants are Vietnamese owned, Chinese, and even bits of Japanese cuisine are found within the restaurants.

The Thai Son restaurant, lo­ cated at 5619 A Cote des N eiges is probably your best bet as an introduction to Vietnamese cui­ sine. It is located in close proxim­ ity to the Jewish General Hospi­ tal. It is always relatively busy, which is usually a good sign in

terms of restaurant selection.

Located on the basement level of the street, Thai Son is unassum­ ing and casual.

The curried chicken plate, served with mixed vegetables and steamed rice, is delicious.

Vietnamese curried chicken is not to be confused with Indian curried chicken; its preparation and final taste are totally differ­ ent. Vietnamese curried chicken is served boneless and its sauce is less oily than i ts Indian counter­ part.

Thai Son's egg rolls are also a must. They are made with a light, flaky crust and once savoured, are irresistable. Thai Son has an extensive menu and is com­ pletely licensed. A decent meal including a couple of egg rolls, the curried chicken plate and a coke or two will cost under ten dollars and is well worth the money.

Chez Mai is another stop well worth visiting. Located at 6657 Cote des Neiges, in front of Plaza Cote des Neiges, the restaurant offers an interesting assortment

of the same type as Thai Son. Although it is a bit more expen­ sive, there is a pleasant terrace for people-watching. The shrimp soup at Chez Mai is well worth sampling. It is served full of steaming noodles, vegetables and medium-sized shrimps. The soup alone is quite filling, but with thediverse selection of other

dishes offered on the menu, it is easy to order more than is neces­ sary for a satisfactory meal.

Another restaurant to consider is the Pho Loa at 6208 Cote des Neiges. There are also a few worthy Chinese-Cantonese res­ taurants including Lung Tuen at 6675 Cote des Neiges and Kum Mon at 6565 Cote des Neiges.Q

Safety in Montreal : Women's self defence courses

BY LISA HARRISON It is easy for students new to Montreal to be lulled into a false sense of security by their surroundings: the University's peaceful green campus, the bustling downtown business sectororMcGill'squaintghetto.

However, Montreal is one of the most dangerous cities in Canada.

The ghetto is particularly dangerous at night, especially for women. "Past experience has taught me to always get someone to walk me home after dark," says Kathleen CarterStein, a U3 Psychology student "A man once jumped out from behind a tree and grabbed me.

I screamed so loud I scared the both of us."

Many women don't consider self-defence courses to be an option because they don't think it will help them. "I'm very light and I don't think I'd have a chance against a strong attacker," explains Carter-Stein.

Catherine Hill, at Montreal's Sexual Assault Center, explains "many women don't sign up for self-defence courses because that would mean admitting that they are vulnerable to attack, and that is a hard thing for them to do."

The Sexual Assault Center usually suggests that women looking fora self-defence course

try the one offered by the Montreal Assault Prevention Center. The program offered at the Center is called ACTION. Leona H ellig, an ACTION instructor explains that their course "emphasizes verbal skills, avoidance and awareness techniques that can usually stop an attack. Potential assaults can often be stopped by saying something or a change in the woman's own body language," says Hellig.

Hellig does not recommend screamers, a device which emi ts a scream-like sound when pressed. "Screamers aren't effective because they don't always work, or aren't always accessible. N ot only that, most

wom en are assaulted by men they know, in a private place where such a device is useless."

The A ssa u lt P revention Center's ACTION program is run once a month, dependent on demand. The $75 course con sists of on e in ten siv e weekend. Course size ranges from ten to eighteen women.

The ACTION program is also offered at the YWCA for $90, the M ontreal W om en's Network for $40, and the C oalitio n A g a in st Sexual Assa ul t orga nizesoneweekend a year for $40 to $45. The prices vary b eca u se som e organizations subsidize part of the cost of the course.

Self-defence courses are one way for women to learn how to defend themselves when faced with an attacker.Common sense is often enough to keep people outofhighrisksituations. Using the Walk Safe Network, or informally arranging to walk home with a friend are basic common sense measures. 11also makes sense not to walk in badly lit areas and to maintain an awareness of the other people in your immediate area.

There is a certain amount of standard practice in terms of crisis management: confront a problem as it arises. Dr. Robert Gruber, a psychiatrist, warns against suppressing rage. "You may think you are sparing the feelings of a person, if you don't

let them know when you are angry. But you will vent your anger in other ways. You will try and make someone pay, whether it is the person w ho is the source of your feelings, or someone who is in fact, a bystander."

Although sometimes your anger might not seem to 'make sense,' it is still important to let you r roomma te know how you feel. "Irritation is essentially irrational, but it has a strong effect on how you behave."

Gruber continued.

For many who have lived at home all of their lives, the adjustment to living with non­ relatives is a hard one to make.

Living alone : survival strategies for students on their own

BY LISA FERNANDEZ Josh Abiscott, a first year science student from Toronto, is excited about living on his own. He is expecting a "hasslefree" life, this being his first flight from the family nest. Yet not all students are so confident that they can handle the dem ands of a com pletely independent lifestyle.

Clea Paul, a student at Concordia, didn't get a place in residence and has to live on her own. She says that "finding a place to live is a pain." She expresses concern about being lonely around dinner, and is also "abitscared aboutsecurity.

Film and Communications, lived with people last year, but says that she hates roommates.

"I like m y privacy and I'm an independent person. I'm also not the easiest person to get along with," she says. Laufer finds that the "worst part about living with other people is having to deal with everyone else's mood swings."

L aufer, h o w ev e r, a lso recognizes that living without roommates "...isn't as much fun, there's not always someone to talk to or eat dinner with. I'm also terrified as a woman living by myself, but I've got a good lock."

Not everyone is the type of person who can live alone. "You have to be happy with y o u r s e lf first," says Laufer, "You have to know how not to feel lonely all the time, and also how not to

complain about it."

Susan, a 22-year old waitress, has been living on her ow n for four years. She prefers to live alone because she can do whatever she wants, whenever she wants. "I can play any kind of music at any volume and not worry," she says. The only drawback she finds is that it is more expensi vebecause she has no one with whom to split the bills.

Susan's basic philosophy is that you have to make your ow n company. She lives with two cats, so she doesn' tconsider herself ever truly alone. When she does get lonely her solu tions are to "take a walk in the park, go out dancing, invite friends over, or masturbate."

Steve Paraszkevas, a third year medical student from Winnipeg, has had the best of

both worlds. Although he shared a suite and enjoyed livingw ith two roomma tes asa Harvard undergraduate, he has now decided to live on his own.

"I find that living alone is much better for studyingand privacy.

It a lso tea ch es m ore responsibility. Itbecomes quite apparent that you're the only one taking care of yourself."

Paraszkevas finds the worst part of living alone is the loneliness. "My phone bills to my girlfriend in N ew York show that." He recommends that first time single dwellers "take the initiative yourself to go out. Don't be left ou t. People don't always remember that you live alone and they might accidentally forget to call.

That's why you have to be assertive in finding out what's going on." □

Its hard to imagine that, in a few weeks time, summer will be over. Open Air Pub will be gone, and classes will be in full swing. Soon many students will be checking out of Gerts and into one of McGill's many libraries.

The choice of library, if at all, depends on w hat sort of atmosphere each student likes best. McLennan Library is a good choice if you like to be surrounded by other students and the v ie w from the uppermost floors is excellent.

Blackader-Lauterman Library, located above Redpath Library, also has a great view of lower campus.

If you need peace and solitude, the IslamicStudiesand Religious Studies Libraries are both very quiet. The Music Library is also quiet, but is too sm all to accom od ate the overcrowded music faculty.

Brent Martel, a third year m ed ica l stu d en t, d o e sn 't recommend the Law Library because it's too noisy. "I find that law students need to discuss things, and they're not always quiet about it," he says.

He also avoids the medical library and Osler. "I find Osier so dark and relaxing that it puts me to sleep - you could slip into a coma in there. The Medical Library is just dreary and dizzying."

Burnside Hall has computer labs that are open all night long.

In order to get inside after ten at night you'll need your McGill I.D. and you must sign in at the security desk. The tenth floor has a graduate Mathematics lounge that is also excellent for studying, bu t you will be kicked out at nine o'clock.

If studying in your own faculty library, you will often run into people you know, and may not get very much work done. This is not too handy for those pursuing research in their field of study.

Indeed, living with someone can mean an end to romping around in your birthday suitor undressing on your way to the bathroom.

A surprise this season? look out for Redmen football

BY JAMES STEWART The McGill Redmen looked sharp in their new red and black practice jerseys. The team started to prepare for the up­ coming football season on lower campus with the modernity of downtown Montréal before them. With the historical McGill campus shadowing them from behind, it made for an interest­ ing contrast. This year the Redmen will be mixing some of the old with some of the new for their 1990 Ontario-Quebec Inter-university Football Con­ ference (OQIFC) schedule.

"We had a very good recruit­ ing year," commented Head Coach Charlie Baillie. "We've got a lot of good, young guys in the positions that w e needed them."

One area that needed help was the offensive line. McGill badly needed to fill some holes.

The coaching staff set out to do just that during the off-season.

Line coach John Kesson re­ cruited a bumper crop of big boys to come to McGill. A couple of trips to southern Ontario paid some big divi­ dends, according to Kesson.

"We got a fair number of kids to come to McGill. I'd say there

Coach Kesson cited Val St. Germain of Ottawa, Mike Emslie of Toronto, Matthieu Quiviger of Montréal and Dave Hudson of Burlington as play­ ers who should impress in their rookie year.

The youthful outlook will certainly compliment a healthy supply of returning veterans.

On offense the most interesting competition is for the position of quarterback. Three pivotsare vying for the starting job while QB coach Ron Tondino looks on.

"It's w id e open," said Tondino, who is back coaching at McGill after a six year hiatus.

"The guys are all supportive of each other and I think we have three quarterbacks who can play at this level."

Yanik Préfontaine returns for his third year at McGill after throwing for over 1000 yards last season. Second-year players

action in the team's first game against the Guelph Gryphons this Friday night at Molson Stadium.

"I envision us using all three (quarterbacks) over the season and we'll see which comes to the fore," added Tondino.

The backfield will no doubt miss the services of Gerry Ifill who is currently collecting his paycheques from the Toronto Argos of the Canadian Football League. Team leader Wally Sordo is back for a fifth year.

Mike Zinga is looking to earn himself some quality playing time this season, while Marc Thiffeault will also be a factor.

He could have a big year with the Redmen. Jean-Benoi t Jubinville, of Magog, P.Q., is a rookie to keep your eyes on.

The receiving corps should be solid led by veterans Chris­ tian Masotti, Luc Thiffeault, Courtenay Schrimpton and Steve Baillergeon.

On defence, coach Mike Maurovich got a couple of pleasant surprises in the return of linebacker Hagen Mehnert and defensive back Richie Babin. Mehnert was drafted in the seventh round by the Ot­ tawa Rough Riders of the CFL and will anchor the lineback­ ing unit. "It's been a competi­ tive camp because of the num­ bers w e've had at linebacker," said M aurovich. "That's healthy."

Babin will lead the secondary and according to coach Baillie

he will be an asset to the team.

"He's a leader on the field," he said of the fifth-year player, who was unable to play last season.

On the whole, the alwaysdiplomtic Maurovich said the team will be "more experi­ enced" than last year. "We've got a couple of holes to fill with departure of (Paul)Kerr, (Paul) C ham bers and (Michel)Leveille."

Fifth year vet, Eric Toupin will be a vital part of the de­ fence.

The OQIFC will be a tough division again this year. In order to succeed the Redmen will have to play a smart team-ori­ ented game. Four of the club's seven games are against Que­ bec teams and success against those provincial rivalsisalways essential in such a short season.

Last year McGill's two victo­ ries over Bishop's earned them a place in the play-offs. The same sort of thing will have to happen this year or the team will be up against the

The McGill Redmen play in the OntarioQuebec division: one of the strongest divisions in the coun­ try. This year, the conference should be very competitive with the possibility of surpris­ ing results. The following is a prediction of how the teams will finish according to yours truly.

Queen's Golden Gaels Last year: 7-0, national semi­ finalists Stew's Prediction: 6-1 The Golden Gaels like the Edmonton Eskimosof the CFL, are a perennial powerhouse.

Queen's has a strong nucleus

of returning veterans includ­ ing running back Paul Beresford, who ran roughshod over McGill last year. They also have an experienced player at quar­ terback and a defence that will give opposing QB's fits. With­ out a doubt, they are the team to beat.

Concordia Stingers Last year: 4-3 Stew's Prediction: 5-2 The Stingers will be a strong club this year, and may sur­ prise a few people. Their of­ fence features 4th year quarter­ back Ron Aboud and and the talented JF Heroux at running back. Their offensive and de­ fensive lines are always strong and two former McGill play­ ers, John Hillhouse (punter) and Dan Wong (defensive back) will strengthen the club. This team

could capture the title.

Ottawa Gee-Gees Last year: 5-2 Stew's Prediction: 4-3 The Gee-Gees lost a lot of important talent last year in­ cluding four starting lineback­ ers, one of whom, Cord Weber, was an All-Canadian .M ost of the weight will be settling on 5th year quarterback Cam Baird who is one of the top pivots in the CIAU and last year's runner-up as the na­ tion's top player. The fact they play pitiful cross-town rival, Carleton, twice, will certainly aid their cause.

M cGill Intramurals are an excellent way to participate in sports and make friends. They offer just about every sport.

Right now there is an informa­ tion desk at the entrance to the Currie Gym. Related to the intramural scene is the grossly popular Total Workout. To get your body back in shape after a summer of partying this aero­ bic exercise is for you. Total Workout takes place from 5:00 to 6:00 Mondays through Thurs­ days, 4:00 to 5:00 on Fridays and 12:00 to 1:00 on Saturdays and Sundays. The cost is a mere loon.

If you'd like to die young take your bike out on Sherbrooke Street. But, if survival is your game there are plenty of bike paths just outside the down­ town area, most notably on Rachel Street between Parc Jean Mance and Parc Lafontaine. Q

The most important stop on your sporting adventure should be right here. McGill offers over 29 Varsity Team sports for which one can play and cheer from September to April. Many of the teams are competitive at the national level. Admission to see the teams is inexpensive and the entertainment value is high. The Montreal Expos (Major League Baseball) offer a great way to start and end the school

year. The 'spos have twelve more home games this season and are currently in third place.

The team is one of the more exciting ones in baseball, but has suffered from a chronic lack of fan support in recent years.

Olympic Stadium (Metro Pie IX) is the pi ts but bleacher seats are only a buck. Phone 522-1245 for tickets, or buy them at the stadium before the game.

The gem in the crown of Montreal sports is the famed Montreal Canadiens (National League Hockey). This team has had an incredible tradition of winning. Montrealers expect the best every season. The Montreal Forum (Metro Atwa­ ter) is a shrine to hockey. It is adorned with the black and white photos of all the 23 Stanley Cup teams. Tickets are hard to get but usually there are standing room ducats avail­ able for about $10.00. Get there early if you want a good view.

N ew hockey coach hi-lites summer sport activity at McGill

BY A. MURRAY GILL McGill University was not missing from the sports scene just because school was out over the summer. There were a few happenings of substance involving McGill personnel.

One of the most noteworthy, is a story involving th McGill Redmen hockey team.

Jean Provonost, assistant to A1 Grazys has relaced his boss of the last two years as head coach of the McGill squad The choice of Grazys as coach had always been a controversial one. N ow he leaves the team to head up administrative duties for the proposed new athletic complex.

In Pronovost, McGill gets a former NHL player who is eager to establish himself as bonafide coach.

"I had a good two years of training and I'm happy to be able to teach something that I like," says the new coach.

Of the challenge that lies ahead, Pronovost says he "still wants to be able to present a package that is understandable to the play­ ers."

He added that Grazys will still assist him in some administrative duties until he gets used to the job..

Redmen hockey tryouts will be starting this week.

The McGill football team added a few new faces to its coaching staff. Joe Marchildon was hired by McGill to assist Head Coach, Charlie Baillie, in day to day adminstrative duties as well as for team duties including coaching the of­ fensive line along with John Kesscn.

Former McGill star Bruno Pietrobon will coach receivers this year. He graduated from McGill in 1989.

McGill's three CFL draftees attempted to hook up with their respective teams over the summer. Paul Kerr and Gerry Ifill were selected by the Toronto Argos and Hagen Mehnert was taken by the Ottawa Rough Riders.

sports S id e lin e s WITH JAMES STEWART In the world of sports one could say that Montreal has a lot to offer. There is the famous Montreal Canadiens hockey club, the Expos of Major League Baseball and we could even go so far as to mention the Canadian Soccer League's Montreal Supra. All of those teams provide top quality entertainment but often you have to pay top dollar to see them.

There's more to Montreal's sporting life than the professional teams. In fact, the best value is right under our noses: inter­ collegiate sports.

McGill University has been involved in inter-collegiate sports longer than the Montreal Canadians have been playing hockey.

We played our first hockey and football games over 100 years ago.

We have won more championships than the Expos and could probably give the Supra a run for their money in civic recogni­ tion.

The product is excellent. That five former McGill football players now play professional ball attests to that.

The product is inexpensive. Any game here at McGill can be seen for a few loons at most.

But the best thing about university sports is that it's fun. For a couple of bucks you can go out with your friends to watch people you recognize compete against the hated enemy (ie Queen's, Concordia). The athletes at this level are unspoiled by the millions of dollars available in professional sports. They play because they love the game and because they want to win.

High salaries and drug abuse make it seem like sport has gone downhill in recent years. Inter-collegiate sports remain mostly ^unscathed by this decay. Yet, for some reason varsity games are

not all that well attended in these parts. There is a definite apathy on campus as well as a feeling that the product is second rate.

Too often in Canada people compare everything Canadian to the American version and if it's not the same it can't be as good.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

What is true is that the philosophies behind the games are different. In the U.S., college sports are more than just a game. It's a business with high stakes.

Here, the games are not driven by money and television but by the athletes and coaches themselves, with the athletes' education still as the focus.

There have been some classic games and teams at McGill over the past few years. Both men's and women's soccer teams went to the national semi-finals last season.

Two seasons ago, before the largest crowd ever to see a McGill hockey game, our guys narrowly lost to the powerful UQTR team. It was the kind of game that demonstrated how much fun an intercollegiate game can be.

The CIAU season opens up this Friday at McGill's own Molson Stadium. The football Redmen will be kicking off their 114th season of competition against the Guelph Gryphons. Both teams have won a Vanier Cup in the '80's. The Friday night flavour of the game is an added bonus for fans who want to whoop it up for their home team.

Continuing the weekend will be the McGill Invitational field hockey tournament also held at the stadium.

A few short days after that, our soccer teams roll into action.

If you have never been out to a McGill game, it's definitely worth giving the experience a try.

You just may well be missing out on the best kept sporting secret in town.

Summer brings changes for Redmen SUMMER EVENTS FROM PAGE 17 on the practice roster for the Argos. However, Ifill, whose teammates call him "Einstein" has impressed thecoachingstaff in Toronto and has seen some action wearing #30. * * * After securing a sponsorship with Petro-Canada in April of this year the Redmen football will be m odifying their uni­ forms. This season McGill will wear silver pants and feature silver stripes on their helmets. * * * At the present date, McGill varsity teams are off and roll­ ing. Virtually every team has started their workouts in some capacity. They include men's and women's soccer, men's rugby, men's and women's volleyball, cross-country and track and field, swimming, field hockey, men's and women's basketball and rowing. All of this information is posted in the Currie Gym. □
