NEWS Council Questions Democratic use of Funds Tuesday, September 22, 1987 The McGill Tribune

by Jennifer Mori The first Students’ Council of the year was marked by controversial questions about the Students’ Society executives’ summer activities. Coun­ cillors listened to individual executive reports and proceded to ratify the meas­ ures undertaken by the Executive Committee over the summer. “$136,000 of improvements were made to Gert’s over the summer. What are the executive guidelines for spend­ ing?” asked Mark Cameron, Arts Rep. to Council. The renovations were dis­ cussed during the Executive Commit­ tee report to Council when Daniel Tenenbaum, StudSoc President said, “The Executive Committee is intended to run the Students’ Society on a day to day basis... Had we waited until now to consultCouncil, the renovations would have been delayed another year.”

Tenenbaum had previously mentioned in his President’s Report that renova­ tions had been necessary since 1978 and that the funds spent by the Execu­ tive Committee were, “accumulation of surpluses that the Students’ Society had been collecting for years.”

“Who came up with the design (of G ert’s) and why?” asked Alix Maclean, Arts Senator.

“There was a CVC survey which made outlines of what had to be done,” replied Terry Sbrissa, VP Internal. The Students’ Society had hired an interior designer but, “the approval of the plans was an Executive Committee deci­ sion.”

by Don Samoil Tough times lie ahead for the Stu­ dents’ Society; our facilities are being stretched to the breaking point. How many people do you think use the Uni­ versity Centre each day ? The crowds at lunch time may give you some idea, but it’s just the tip of the iceberg. This ac­ tivity is the very lifeblood of the Soci­ ety; however, it takes its toll. Gert’s, for example, had borne the brunt of many years of use, arid its facilities had slowly degenerated. If not for the fore­ sight of past executives, that trend would have continued this year. Do you know how much of the renovation money came out of this year’s budget?

NONE!! Most of the money was set aside in previous years, specifically for renovations. The remainder will be paid off by the increased volume at Gert’s. But much improvement re­ mains to be undertaken if we are to enjoy the full potential of the Univer­ sity Centre. We owe it to ourselves and to future students to plan ahead. When thinking of the needs of the Students’ Society, few come to mind as readily as the clubs. The vital role that they play is being strained by the lack of funds.

As the number of groups and the scope of activities increase, so do the finan­ cial requirements. If we are to continue to encourage diversity in thought and cultural exchange, we must commit more to our clubs; all they ask for is the opportunity to share.

The outlook for this year is not bleak; in term of activities and services, I firmly believe that it will be one of the best. We must, however, remain aware of the rumblings on the financial hori­ zon to ensure our continued success.

University Affairs.

Jamie Kneen, Clubs Rep. to Council, asked “why couldn’t Council deal with it before the summer?” Sbrissa replied that questionnaires on the proposed renovation had been distributed by the previous StudSoc executive but that they had been retrieved just before the end of the last academic year.

“It was impossible to make plans on such short notice,” said Don Samoil, VP Finance.

“My qualms are not with the alloca­ tion of money or why it was needed,” continued Kneen, “but I find the proc­ ess lacking in democracy. If some procedure could be arranged properly, we would all be more comfortable.”

Cameron intends to present a Students’ Society constitutional amendment to this effect at the next Students’ Council meeting. The expenditures were rati­ fied narrowly and the rest of the Execu-

tive Committee’s actions were ap­ proved.

In his report, Tenenbaum also men­ tioned that 50% of student faculty asso­ ciation budgets had been forwarded as opposed to previous years, when they had had to wait until November to get funds.

“Faculty associations had trouble getting money and organizing activi­ ties and this is a key time to get people to get involved,” he said. Tenenbaum also announced that StudSoc is consid­ ering fundraising as an alternative source of income to fees.

Chris Alexander’s VP External Report to Council stressed the impor­ tance of the Students’ Society’s external contacts. “Students’ Society must set broader goals and become more politically active,” Alexander remarked. Apart from a review of the StudSoc External Affairs policy man-

ual, the External Affairs portfolio has, “a number of issues we’ve been push­ ing at year after year, such as pedestrian safety, loans and bursaries, the student movement, and the course materials charge.”

In reply to a question about StudSoc’s relation to ANÉEQ, Alexan­ der said, “We go to their meetings because they’re the only student federation in Quebec... W e’re all interested in ANÉEQ because it’s sustained itself while RAEU (Régroupement des As­ sociations Étudiants Universitaires; another Quebec student federation) went down the drain.”

“Are there options of another student union with other universities?” asked Guini.

“There’s been a lot of talk.” said Alexander. “The general consensus is that it’s too early (after the demise of

RAEU)... There are no plans for a stu­ dent referendum on student federa­ tions (at McGill).” The External Af­ fairs Committee will be studying what ANÉEQ has to offer.

In response to questions about the Athletics Complex, Alexander said, “the whole issue is an enigma.” Stu­ dents’ Society has talked to local inter­ est groups and to the administration but, “perhaps it’s time to take a more active role.”

The VP University Affairs, hopes to publish a monthly University Affairs newsletter, get the VP University Af­ fairs put on the Board of Governors, and investigate further avenues of stu­ dent housing by means of the recently created Task Force on Student Hous­ ing.

Shattering the Silence in the Soviet Union

by Michelle Ninow “Prison is a very good model of Soviet Society”, explained Natan Shcharansky , former Soviet prisoner of conscience and present human rights activist, as he related his experiences as a dissident in the U.S.S.R.. He was speaking to a large group of supporters who were squeased into the Moot Court room in the Faculty of Law Building on Monday , September 14.

Following opening remarks, by Dean Rod MacDonald, and an intro­ duction by Professor Irwin Cotier, who was actively involved in the Shcharan­ sky case, the human rights activist rose to his second standing ovation, and began to share his inspiring message.

Although much of what Shcharan­ sky had to say was familiar to the audi­ ence, his mere presence in the room was enough to encourage even the apathetic to take an active role in the promotion of human rights.

Shcharansky has become a symbol in the human rights struggle because he, as Sakarov put it , “shattered the silence in the Soviet Union”.

With Yuri Orlov he founded the Moscow Helsinki Monitoring Group and was prominent in the Jewish emmigration movement. He also worked on behalf on religious and eth­ nic rights groups such as the Seventh Day Adventists, Baptists, Crimean Tartars and Pentacostals.

Shcharansky spoke of his nine years in prison, the psychiatric treatment he was forced to undergo and his many KGB interrogations. He also related the stories of others he met during his imprisonment; those who were,like himself, a threat to the Soviet Govern­ ment.

Shcharansky described the Soviet government as a big system of which all are a part;”the Soviets understand only the mass”, to be an individual is against the law. “ The individual has to prove he is not guilty “.explained the dissident.

Shcharansky said :”the Soviet system is very patient because they work with every person “. An individual with deviant thoughts is viewed as a threat to the system ; “they must be sure that in your mind are right ideas...they work with you every day in prison, if you don’t submit you are punished”, explained Shcharansky .

Such punishment could include less food, less frequent visits from relatives or perhaps no visits at a ll, and a reduc­ tion of exercise.

Shcharansky also took some time to share some of his opinions about the Gorbachov regime. What the Western press has been sighting as a thaw in Soviet emmigration laws, the release of prominent dissidents such as Shchar­ ansky, is a cover up. It draws our atten­ tion away from the real issue :free emmigration. Under the Gorbachov

government, new thougher emmigra­ tion laws have been implemented. Now only those who have first relatives outside the East block are permitted to emmigrate. Even those who have se­ cured invitations, a priof requirement for emmigration, are no longer allowed out. As Shcharansky spoke , one could sense the anger and frustration which must be a part of the lives of those who

want to leave the U.S.S.R. and are unable to; “while all of this takes place the whole world applauds Gorbachov for his human rights actions”.

Even though Shcharansky is now out of the Soviet Union, he has not given up the fight for free emmigration and human rights. He is already planning a massive ralley for human rights in continued on page 10

Broadcasting in China

by Angela C hapm an McGill’s Centre for Continuing Education and Radio Canada Interna­ tional (R.C.I.) are currently negotiating the production of english lessons to be broadcast in China. Although several other international radio stations broadcast english lessons on short wave (notably the BBC and the Voice of America), this program will be unique in broadcasting from Chinese stations and adapting content to local populations.

According to an article in L e Devoir

, Radio Canada International has signed agreements with the radio sta­ tions of Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou to transmit these english lessons for 40 weeks from September 1988 until June 1989. Three one half hour programs a week, to be repeated four times daily, a will be produced for a potential audience of 20 million.

Take B ack The Night

by Kim F arley A marcher’s jacket read: “The only feminine protection a woman needs is a Smith and Wesson.” A seven-year old boy carried a placard declaring, “Say NON to sexual aggression!” This was the spirit behind last Friday night’s Take B ack the Night march, protesting violence against women on darkened city streets.

Mary Lamey, a co-ordinator of the march, which began in San Francisco in 1978 and has since spread continent wide, deemed its purpose, “a morale boost for women.”

“People think we are isolated, that there is no one to turn to. We want to show women that they can turn to each other,” she added.

Carrying candles and waving placards with such slogans as ‘Don’t Agonize, Organize!’ and ‘Rape the Practise; Pom the Theory,’ about 400 women marched from Lafontaine Park, down St. Denis, to 77 Mont Royal St. W., where a dance was held.

The march seemed to stupify male passers-by, who gaped as they listened to the chant, “La rue!, La nuit!, Les femmes sans peur!” Most women cheered or joined the march. According to Lamey, “(when last year’s march passed through the pom district), the prostitutes seemed to be with us (in heart) but I don’t think the pimps were too impressed.”

The women were marshalled in by police on both sides of the marching column.

Many marchers felt that they symbolized an unwanted male domination over the event. Marie Henrietta, a teacher, said “The police don’t like the women to get too noisy... They’d rather keep us quiet and demure.”

Oppression Suffered by Cheerleaders CHEERLEADER: One who leads cheers o f encouragement or applause.

It seems appropriate to entitle this by defining the term on which it is based.

Sadly enough, McGill has forgotten the meaning and the history of the word.

Those who are faintly aware of the existence of the traditional cheerleader tend to regard her as an object of some scorn or ridicule.

Going back in history to the origin of the cheerleader, the sport of cheerleading was a method of inducing crowd participation in encouraging an athletic team to victory. Cheerleading was originally a male sport, as females were not allowed to attend sporting events. Therefore, I must stress that cheerleaders did not come about in the same manner as cigarette girls or table dancers. They are also not on the field for the benefit of the football team. As any experienced cheerleader knows, the last thing we would want to do is have any interaction with a team member during a game due to the fact that this is a time of intense concentration.

In short, a cheerleader helps a crowd show spirit, enthusiasm, and support for their team.

1 must attept now to dissolve the myth that a squad is made-up of a bunch of bubbly, dumb blondes who are out to date the starting line-up. The 1987-88 McGill squad is made up of 8 very intelligent, ambitious, spirited, and yes, attractive students whose academic interests are as diverse as English literature and human anatomy. We wouldn’t be at McGill if we fit the dumb blonde description and this description is not a prerequisite to join the cheerleading squad.

For the past two years, a very small group of students have been trying desperately to get a squad going and have been more than willing to accept new recruits. This task is next to impossible with the lack of funding and student and staff support that exists at McGill.

After having attended, visited, and cheered at many schools in Canada and the United States, I have never been more disillusioned with the staff and students at McGill. McGill has an incredible worldwide reputation for excellent academic standards, a beautiful downtown setting, high quality athletic programs and facilities, and a traditional “Ivy League” atmosphere; but what is tradition without letterman sweaters, red and white jackets, a full stadium, and roaring fans? That’s what university is all about and those who have lost sight of that are missing out on an integral part of life. Think of Archie comics and Happy Days!

I may be getting carried away because I am a truly a believer in the continuation of great traditions and the reinstatement of those that have faded over the years.

Granted, times have changed and each generation brings new ideas, advance­ ments, opinions, and changes, but why change a great thing? Cheerleading is still reagerded at many schools as a sport with intense practise schedules and summer training camps. Let’s face it, it takes gymnasts and dancers, not just any dumb blonde, to do splits, mounts, cartwheels, jumps, and pyramids. A game at Western or Queens would not be a game without the presence of cheerleaders. Back to my previous point about staff and students, a year without spirit or support at either of the aforementioned schools would most definately be irregular. In general, cheerleaders are regarded as an athletic team and are funded by the athletic society, unlike at McGill.

I write this article partly out of frustration but more out of pride. With every negative force blocking our path, we eight girls have attempted to bring back a large part of the past that McGill is all about. Independently of the athletic society, who has volunteered no monetary or even moral support over the past two years, Lila Feng, our head cheerleader, has brought a squad together. We have ended up with eight girls who aren’t “too cool” to say “no way.” After three hours of practise a night and many days pulling together our red and white unifrorms with our personal and limited budget, we have done it. We sincerely hope that this will be the re-birth o f yet another great McGill tradition and that you, the fans, will give the McGill cheerleaders the support we are giving you and your redmen.

On the cover of the Plumber's Pot, new students find a character holding a beer, a machine gun and a knife. Curious and naive, they pick up the orientation week issue published by the Engineering Undergraduate Society. Some of them may find it humorous. We are writing for the ones who don’t.

The Plum ber’s Pot is rumoured to be racist, sexist, homophobic, and to many, generally degrading. Last week we were given the opportunity to see for ourselves what the Pot was really all about. It is difficult to put our emotions into words; nonetheless we will try.

It was belittling to women, not because of what they are, but because of what they were made to represent. We asked ourselves: “Why would people in an ‘in­ stitution of higher learning’ feel it necessary to degrade other equal human beings?”

Contemporary civilization, although not utopian, does have a generally ac­ cepted moral code. A differentiation has been made between moral and immoral.

Similarly, we feel, a line can be drawn between the insulting and the humorous.

If someone finds it funny, our outrage cannot change that, nor can it (as it has been shown), keep the Pot off the stands. What we believe should be considered is that certain individuals are truly offended by what is written.

It is one thing to poke fun at human ideosyncracies, tendencies, or attributes, but the Pot undermines social progress by glorifying traditional roles which are no longer universally accepted. “Why break with tradition?” the Pot asks, twisting the knife into the hearts of many people who have fought, and who continue to fight for change. We are taking offense to the words which have undermined a politi­ cal, economic , social, and emotional struggle for equality.

We are not advocating censorship, nor are we placing any kind of moral judge­ ment on the Pot" s staff. We are simply asking them to think.

Student condemns condemnation of Welcome Week To the Editor: I fear that your last editorial “Salut McGill - For Extroverts Only??” (‘T ribune, September 15, 1987) may well have presented some kind of anti-social ogre who hates to see young students (or even old students) enjoying themselves. The editorial may also have the given the impres­ sion that I was highly critical of and had strong feelings about the Wel­ come Week activities. Again, in the words of Sir Thomas More, “Not so!”

In fact, as one of the many helpers who volunteered much of theeir time to the smooth running of Welcome Week activities, I would like again to compliment the organizers and the host of fellow volunteers for what was excellent exercise in student par­ ticipation and meaningful ventures. I felt then, and still feel now, that many of the activities held during the wel­ come Week (or was it two weeks?) really helped the new students to get to know each other, the other stu-

dents, the University set-up, and and the different services and facilities available to them here at McGill.

I am not altogether sure that the two quotations, which were taken from a lengthy conversation between the writer of the editorial, adequately re­ flect the tenor of my comments about the whole period in question. I thought our conversation was centred about an internal report by one of the volunteers working on the Welcome Week activities. At the time of that conversation, I did not realize it was going to be used in a newspaper article (this I discovered later), still less did I realize that it was going to appear as an editorial. My concern, at the time of the conversation, was with the apparent lack of involvement of some of the International Students with regard to some of the activities.

This is not to say that “Welcome Week events were often centred around beer drinking” as if this state­ ment adequately reflects some form of evaluation or appraisal of the whole enterprise. There were many events which did not involve beer and there were many excellent occasions when the new students were introduced to university life in an informal atmos­ phere. My original observation that it is difficult to expect students from the Middle East and Asia (which are pre­ dominantly Muslim) to attend events which do , in fact, centre around beer drinking. But this was not intended to be a sweeping generalization con­ demning those events which are de facto beer drinking, why then, would

I have been standing there in the Ball­ room opening four bottles at a time with that wonderful gizmo invented by our own engineering corps?

I did, and still do, have some reser­ vations about that Fairplay (or was it Foreplay?) contribution; not the least of these is the fact that the lady who led “The Games” did so, at the ex­ pense of the student body, to the tune of $1200. I still feel that it was an inappropriate set of tactile gimmicks deliberately geared to break down the natural (and not necessarily harmful) inhibitions and reticences of our first year (read ‘first week’) students. But to make those small criticisms about one somewhat insig­ nificant hour long and boisterous activity the basis for a general attack upon the whole of the Welcome Week and the Salut McGill hard working volunteers is preposterous and grossly unfair. I never intended such nor do I wish my words to achieve this end.

In conclusion, I would like to con­ gratulate the organizers and the Wel­ come week committee, as well as the hard-working volunteers, on what was an excellent demonstration of McGill hospitality and friendliness. I am sure all those new students who took part in any of the myriad of events would join me in saying that it was a job well done and well worth the effort put into it.

Fuller key to Redmen victory

by K elly M u lca ir Before an attendance of an estimated 7,000 fans at Molson Stadium, The McGill Redmen defeated the Concordia Stingers by a score of 31-20 , on Satur­ day September 19, capturing the cov­ eted Shaughnessy Cup. This year, the battle for College foot­ ball supremacy was magnified by the fact that for the first time, the Shriner’s Hospital for Crippled Children spon­ sored the event. The Shriner’s involve­ ment, coupled with the fall of the Allouette Franchise earlier this year, were largely responsible for attracting the large turnout.

Q u arterb ack Bryan F u ller Even without the new sponsorship, the McGill-Concordia confrontation stands on its own, as a traditional source of explosive entertainment and rivalry.

Before the game, quarterback Bryan Fuller explained why he felt the McGill -Concordia dual is always such a dy­ namic one; “The fact that we are both Montreal teams is a big factor. The com­ petition is far more intense and emo­ tional because we are competing for prestige right here in the city.”

Fuller maintains that the age old McGill-Concordia rivalry, illustrated by the frequent name-callling and dis­ reputable chants of Saturday’s game, are common when the two teams confront

each other. Fuller admits that “it’s a childish mentality, but it’s all part of the hype. It’s what gets you going”.

When asked whether Concordia’s record of 2-0 compared with McGill’s record of 0-2, preceding the game, both­ ered the Redmen, Fuller explained that McGill had played two top teams and that both games were plagued by Red­ men injuries. “Concordia has played two lower ranking teams so you really can’t compare our records”.

While Fuller was confident of a vic­ tory before the game, he said that the Redmen would precede with caution; “W e’re not going to take them for granted or underestimate them, we’re just going to treat them like any other team”.

The Redmen’s strategy payed off during Saturday’s game. McGill began with an early lead in the first quarter, which the team then built on throughout the game.

Runningback Mike Soles was a key figure in the team’s success. Soles car­ ried 13 time for 197 yards and scored a 60 yard TD run. According to Fuller, Sole’s performence was central to the team’s victory. “Mike had a fantastic game. He took off a lot of pressure from me which was really good”.

The veteran QB seemed extremely re­ lieved that McGill had finally won a big game. “Today’s game was crucial. We knew we could do it but we really needed this win to get the team back on track”.

Concerning the Redmen’s upcoming game with Bishops, Fuller said that al­ though the team considers Bishops as a serious obstacle, the Redmen gained enough confidence on Saturday to give them the necessary momentum to win.

When asked what his predictions are for the season, Fuller responded that the team has the capacity to go far. Although he said that it is difficult to make any accurate predictions in the O-QIFC, he, as well as the rest of the Redmen, remain confident that the team will make the playoffs.

There were apparently 15,000 people at the Concordia-McGill football game on Saturday. The game was called the Shrine Bowl for the Shaughnessy Cup. This in-city rivalry dates back to 1975. It is named after Frank Shaughnessy, who might have been a coach at Loyola. He was a vociferous promoter of Canadian college football and a man of admirable? character.

But with red and white slashes, dots and big “M’”s on merry faces, our Red­ men crowd clearly and distinctly out­ drank, out-laughed and out-bellowed the few Concordia spectators present.

I asked a McGill fan, “How are you enjoying the game?”

“Good”, he replied, “ ...terribly fucked up though...much trouble fo­ cussing...”

“Hold on...We have CHEERLEAD­ E R S??!!”, one squeaked upon noticing the dozen or so newly-arrived members of the Toronto nubility.

“What Ho!, gaze right! ” he further ex­ claimed upon seeing token members of the Montréal nobility. (What happens when they meet?) I overheard one say­ ing to the other, “The good thing about these football games is that in attending, one stays within the limits of Montréal’s Golden Square Mile. “...Get to know Professor Deutsch.

Shriners Come to Town

by Ken M uss On Tuesday, Sep. 15, at the Shriner’s Hospital for Children on Cedar Avenue, the local Shriner’s Karnak Temple an­ nounced the association of the annual Shaughnessy Cup football game with the Shrine Ball.

The Shaughnessy Cup, symbol of university football supremacy in Montréal, pits the McGill Redmen against cross-town rival Concordia. The 1987 edition marks the 19th annual game and thia year McGill and Concor­ dia also vied for the Shrine Bowl.

Grant Peterson, the Potentate of the Karnak Temple stated that, “the net pro­ Page 6

ceeds after the expense of the football teams will go to the Shriner’s Hospital.”

Peterson also noted that the actual game was part of the North East Shrine Asso­ ciation Field Days. The days involved competitions among 5000 Shriners at Olympic Stadium on Saturday morning and a huge parade along Sherbrooke St. from Atwater to Parc Avenue before the opening kickoff. The Shriners con­ verged on Montreal from as far as Rhode Island, to Newfoundland, to Toronto for the event.

When asked if the Shrine Bowl could become an anual event, Peterson re­

plied, “we certainly hope it will be.” He also pointed out that the Shrine Bowl promotion helped two large causes; in­ tercollegiate football and the care of crippled children.

Ticket prices for the game were raised from one dollar to three bucks in order to donate more money to the hospital. The crippled children received some unex­ pected guests as football players from both McGill and Concordia chatted with the kids. The kids were the big winners of the production as the funds raised will improve care at the Montréal Shriner’s Hospital.

Summer was a time for drinking margueritas, subjecting our bodies to the Gods of Sun, and getting in shape.

Unfortunately for all us outdoor types, summer has now officially ended. Soon we will have to resolve ourselves with the depressing fact that due to freezing temperatures, there will be no more running on the mountain to bum off the beer and pizza ingested at last night's pub night. What does this all mean?

What can you do so that your diligent summer regimen will not go to waste?

First remember, staying in shape or getting into shape is difficult. Even us ex-athletes-tumed-sports writers have to find inner reservoirs of zealous energy to pull ourselves away from the televi­ sion or this week’s Steinberg’s flyer.

Forcing yourself to go jogging when there’s five feet of snow on the ground takes more then just dedication, it takes insanity. Considering most of us at McGill are sane individuals who search for a quick painless solution for staying in shape, there must be other ways. Here are some helpful hints for all of you out there in this predicament.

So in a cloud of dried red paint Lord >urham made his way back from the dumni side of Percival Molson staium. He grinned a proud grin as he azed upon the well-stocked bleachers, pirit at McGill...riotous first years,... lumni... pipe bands and student reportrs on hand.

“I think I ’ll graduate with a clear con:ience.”

But upon return he found his comides slightly weathered after the antics f the first two quarters.

An aggressive Redmen defence thwarted two late Stinger drives, and kicking sensation Petitpas added his third field goal of the match to ice the game for McGill.

Monumental hits by Robin Belanger, who layed out Mirco Buth in the endzone, and Vince Gagne ,who made a touchdown-erasing hit in the third quar­ ter were only a few of the many defen­ sive highlights for the Redmen.

The MVP’s named by the media for the game were Ron Aboud for Concor­ dia who ran ! 1 times for 94 yards and was 2 of 9 for 26 yards in the air,

McGill’s choice was none other than Mike Soles who ran over 100 yard for the seventh time in his short CIAU ca­ reer. He ran 197 yards on 13 carries and a TD. “He was everything for us”, commented a humble defensive stand­ out Robin Belanger,” I can’t wait until the next time we play them (Concordia), because we are going to beat them by a lot.”

Shining just as brightly as Soles, was quarterback Bryan Fuller who had a brilliant game completing 9 of 15 for 182 yards and a TD. Fuller is finally showing the potential that he was ini­ tially recruited for 4 years ago.

A frustrated Gerry Ifill who rushed for a sub-par 49 yards commented on the

slow first and third quarters for the Redmen. “Although we had a good game offensively, there were occasions where we lost or had no gains on a play, and that was because of poor excecution.

We have to hone our skills and stick with what we know and do best.”

The Redmen win returned the Shaughnessy Cup to McGill after a one year sabbatical at Concordia and in­ creased the Redmen advantage over the Stingers in the overall series to 15 wins versus 8 losses. If the Redmen want to stay in a winning mode they will have to put together solid performances in all four quarters next weekend, here at McGill, against 2nd Ranked Bishop’s Gaiters.

by J.N . W ong The McGill University Redmen pow­ ered past seventh ranked Concordia University Stingers 31-20 Saturday at Molson Stadium in the thirteenth An­ nual Shaughnessy Cup. Roughly seventhousand fans witnessed what was the Redmen’s first win of the season and now leaves four of the six teams in the OQIFC with a 1-1 record. Bishop’s University is the only undefeated club in the conference and Carleton is the only winless.

The first quarter was a see-saw battle exemplified by poor excecution by both squads. The only highlight was Robin Belanger’s interception and return of 13 yards which led to a field goal by Chuck Petitpas early in the second quarter giv­ ing the Redmen a 3-1 lead.

A few minutes later the Redmen struck again on another Petitpas FG for a 6-1 advantage. Concordia came back on the very next drive to regain the lead with an 82 yard pass and run from Steve Batty to Mirco Buth.

Their lead did not last long as key quarterback sacks by Mark Haugwitz and Alain Delorme forced punts by the Stingers. The Redmen capitalized on these opportunities to score 2 touch­ downs; the first being a 35 yard bomb from Bryan Fuller to Claude Bourgeois and the second a 1-yard dive by Doug Mann after a brilliant 74-yard scamper

by Mike Soles to set up the score. Chuck Petitpas missed just wide on a 42-yard field goal attempt adding a single point and giving the Redmen a 21-8 halftime advantage.

In the third quarter it appeared as if McGill had left their game hats in the locker room, as Concordia manipulated both the defence and offence of Red­ men. “We fell flat in the third quarter”, said Redmen offensive lineman Bob Galvin. The Stingers closed to within 2 points of the Redmen with a 4-yard touchdown by Jim Bishop and a Jean Perrault field goal and single.

by S a ra h G u altieri “Women’s rugby has taken off,” according to Bill Balfour, coach of the Quebec Provincial team. No longer is the game a junior sport for Sunday recreational types. It is fast becoming a serious international sport. The fact that Canada has just formed its first Women’s national team is an encouraging sign of growing interest and commitment. Women’s rugby is, however, still trying to dispel the hackneyed stereotyping that is attached to it. The view that female rugby players are butchy, battle-axes with hairy legs and husky voices is. surprisingly popular. Just recently, for example, a member of McGill’s Women’s Foot­ ball Club (M.W.F.C.) was asked by a male rugby player in complete puzzlement, “Why do you play rugby? You’re too feminine.”

Well, beauty and brawn do mix. Furthermore, rugby is a fast, aggressive game that attracts all types of people. Women’s rugby though, is still not taken very seriously by the press, and cover­ age is usually minimal.

Recently the Quebec Women’s rugby team participated at the Nationals in Edmonton, beat­ ing first seeded British Columbia and making it to the finals. Altough Quebec lost to Alberta in the final showdown, their performance was quite re­ markable given their 5th place seeding. In fact, the calibre of play so impressed the Edmonton men’s team that they asked several of the Quebec players to join their team ! This event recieved but a brief mention on a Montreal radio station.

Here at McGill men’s rugby has always been very strong, but their pre-eminence may be chal­ lenged this year by the women’s team. The McGill W.R.F.C. has the biggest turnout ever with over 45 women making up the varsity team.

Most are rookies who, says coach Ray Besette, “have a wealth of natural talent.” There is also a strong veteran lineup with the necessary experi­ ence to help out the younger players. Among the veterans are Cindy Cantin and Lucy Corbett.

Both Cantin and Corbett played on the Quebec team in Edmonton. Corbett, who plays hooker position, was just recently chosen as a member of the National team. She is looking forward tp the first ever Women’s international tournament, to be held in November against the United States.

With the season just underway the McGill team has carved out four wins in four games. Last weekend the team was not phased by horrid weather conditons, and led by the power plays of Catherine Megias and Mary White, trampled Champlain 18-0. Although scheduled to play Vanier as well, the latter forfeited due to a short­ age of players. McGill, in their typically zealous manner, offered 5 of their players to the Vanier side and played a ‘fun’ scrimmage.

Next weekend the W.R.F.C. faces two of the premier teams in the league. Concordia and John Abott Cegep. Given McGill’s strong perform­ ance to date, the games should prove to be most exciting. Also coming up on October 2.3.4.

McGill will be hosting Princeton University.

Hoodoo Gurus

by Tom Parry It’s not often that you see a band walk on stage and simply blow the lid off a place. It is on these rare occasions that a band transcends its existence as a group of individuals and becomes one giant power generator. Using this warped analogy, one could say that the Hoodoo Gurus are roughly equiva­ lent to the Hoover Dam in energy out­ put.

You can run through all the regular expressions in trying to describe the Hoodoo Gurus’ performance at Club Soda last Saturday night, but the one that comes closest is probably “savage”. The music either conjures up visions of natives returning from a hard day in the jungle, or simply the best party you have ever been to. Like their fellow Australian rockers, Midnight O il, the Hoodoo Gurus have a knack for getting people hopping; but while the Oils might try to make you think, the Gurus just want to have fun. No geopolitics here.

The show began with the voice of a raging preacher, filling the club with a rambling diatribe against rock and roll.

His sermon was finally punctuated by a roaring power chord as the Gurus launched into a chainsaw rendition of “Hell for Leather”. They followed up with a blistering set that covered their three-record career. We heard a lot from the new album, B lo w Y o u r C o o l, but we were also treated to such older gems as, / Want You B a ck and Kam ikaze P ilo t. The song that brought

the house down was an extended ver­ sion of the tribal classic, Leilani. This ode to the classic boy, girl, volcanogod love triangle was highlighted by neo-psychadelic guitar fuzz and a back beat that shook the club to its founda­ tions.

One of the best things about the Hoodoo Gurus is that they manage to blend softer numbers into their show without losing any intensity ormomentum. While other bands may sound out of place playing anything but jackham­ mer-beat songs, the Hoodoo Gurus proved that they arè quite comfortable both with lilting ballads and sentimen­ tal love songs. / Was The One gave the audience a chance to just relax and listen before getting back into full party mode.

Special mention must be made of lead guitarist Brad Shepherd. His skill and speed are on a par with any of the current metal-gods. His frequent bursts of feedback and lightning solos stand out even in a band as outstanding as this. The rest of the band includes lead vocalist and guitarist Dave Faulkner, powerhouse drummer Mark Kingsmill and bassist Clyde Bramley; together they produce a tight and exciting per­ formance. Faulkner’s quick wit estab­ lished a strong rapport between the band and the audience, which resulted in a mutual feeling of camaraderie.

This was evident in the bits of conver­ sation and laughter that passed be­ tween the front rows and the stage.

Inaperfect world, the Hoodoo Gu­ rus would hopefully be worshipped as

the “Baghwans of Bounce” that they truly are. For now they will have to settle for club gigs, and we just won’t hear their records on the radio.

Prior to the Hoodoo Gurus’ sonic assault, the Gruesomes showed the audience that anyone can be successful with the right gimmick. At their best, the Gruesomes managed a half­ hearted stab at the blues. They were made even worse by the fact that lead singer Bobby had an injured finger and was unable to play guitar. The result was a weaker sound that made rhythm guitarist Jerry’s mistakes all the more apparent. Obviously this music isn’t meant to be taken seriously; it’s just that after a while all the songs sound the same.

I asked myself “What will they look like?”, “What will they sound like?”, “What will it feel like?”. The answers, now recalled through a blurred haze of smoke, light and sound, are still vibrating in my mind. Pink Floyd has returned, stronger than ever, and the show they put on last Monday night at the Forum was a thrilling three hours of aesthetic, creative and sensual lux­ ury.

Adapting to the 80s’ was an uncer­ tain feat for Pink Floyd, being bom out of the psychedelic ashes of the late 60s’; and with the departure of basist and songwriter Roger Wa­ ters, 1was curious to see whether the band could put out a new look and sound. The show was divided into two parts, with the first half being devoted to material from the bands’ recently released album “A Mo­ mentary Lapse of Reason”. The album was introduced with the per­ fect instrumental “Signs of Life”, accompanied by a fi Im projected on a round screen suspended above the stage. The film depicted a man rowing down a stream in the English countryside, his oars splashing in the water (what a great sound’).

Paranoia, neurosis, self-conscious­ ness: all classic Pink Floyd themes and all represented on the new album, were brought to life on the stage in a progressively intricate blaze of multicoloured lazers, hy­ draulic ’alien’ looking lights, ani­ mated and live-action film and unbelievable props.

When part two of the show opened to the dark strains of One o f these Days, out from the top left-hand side of the Forum came looming a huge | bus-size inflatable pig, complete with oversized testicles and penis.

Hanging nose-down into the audi­ ence, people grabbed wildly at its snout as it swivelled and reared its mean, quivering nostrils. The Fo­ rum went wild.

Even without Waters, band mem-1 bers David Gilmour, Rick Wright j and Nick Mason, backed up by an extra drummer, guitarist, bassist, j keyboardist and two supporting vocalists, performed old classics W elcome to the M achine, C om ­ fortab ly Numb and M oney more than competently. For visual stim­ uli, some stunningly vivid cartoons were resurrected from the band’s mid-70s’ period. The ending of the show was marked by an unex­ plained ten minutes of lights up which left some wondering whether that was it. Never ones todissapoint.

Pink Floyd et al came back for an explosive fifteen minute finale, leaving their delirious fans on a dream-like plateau of brilliantly tinted lazers, lights and the pound­ ing beat of Run L ike Hell.

by Jan e Gillis If you’ve taken a stroll along Sh­ erbrooke lately, you have probably noticed the large flying machine looming over the entrance of La Musee des Beaux Arts, as a repre­ sentation o f the Leonardo Da Vinci exhibit, presently showing at the museum and ending o f November 8th. The exhibit is being held to commemorate the Canadian Engi­ neering Centennial.

Many know Da Vinci for his great talent as a painter and for his many art works, such as the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper; but the Italian-born Da Vinci was much more than an artist. His genius was also an evident and influential pre­ cursor in the modern-day fields of architecture, invention and engi­ neering.

There are 25 machines on display at the museum, ranging from the simplest to the most complex of me­ chanical devices Some of these in­ clude a reversible hoist, a revolving crane and a water meter. In addition, there are two thousand o f his per­ sonal folios - the approximate onethird that remain today from the original collection.

The Da Vinci exhibit is much more than an array o f machine and folio displays. The museum is also offering Leonardo films, theatre, workshops, and a concert series. If you have doubts about taking in an exhibit largely based on physics and mechanics (as I did!), take a chance

on a little adventure. The exhibition is interesting as well as bewildering.

One is humbled upon viewing his intricate illustrated manuscripts and fascinating models; for his principles lie as the basis and foundation for much of modern-day engineering and architecture. Many of the small me­ chanics which we now take for granted, such as the use of torque, the lever and the screw, are directly based on the principles discovered by Da Vinci.

It is inspiring to see the products of a mind that was constantly at work, obsessed with the workings o f ma­ chines as well as nature.

With a student ID. the ticket cost is $2.75, and if you choose to rent an audio guide it is an extra $3.30. It would probably be just as enjoyable, if not more so, to take along your own classical music and delve back into the past with Leonardo Da Vinci.

My L ife As A D og may not be every one’s cup of tea, but for those who don ’t mind a slower pace and a slice-oflife feel, this movie is a real charmer.

Ingmar is a twelve-year-old boy growing up in 1950’s Stockholm and experiencing the trauma of slowly los­ ing his mother to tuberculosis. He is an eccentric child who finds solace by withdrawing into the persona of a dog or recounting newspaper stories of gruesome accidents to himself. When his dying mother is no longer able to care for him, he is sent away to live with his uncle in a small town, where he pro­ ceeds to befriend the town denizens many of whom are considerably more eccentric than he is. One of these eccentrics is a tomboy who insists on revealing her feminine difference to him.

There is no plot to speak of, only a series of vaguely connected incidents.

The obvious theme is that of Ingmar’s coming to tenus with his mother's death; the underlying theme is his kin­ ship with a Soviet Space Dog lost in orbit as he himself muddles through life.

by Steve Palamedes When the play “Tightrope Time” represented Canada at the recent Am­ sterdam Multicultural Festival, fifteen of the eighteen privileged countries at­ tending invited playwright and actor Walter Borden to perform to their na­ tive audiences. Even participants at the festival who didn’t understand English were impressed by the play because, according to Borden, “the feelings got through to them”.

Emotions are central to this work since it is on this level that communica­ tion between actor and audience is es­ tablished. One need not be Black or know anything about the history of Blacks in Nova Scotia to understand this intense one-man show.

As the play opens, the audience is

drawn into the work by music that envelops and relaxes. Borden appears on stage dressed from head to toe in white, beckoning us along a journey through “the chambers of his mind”.

The narrator’s soothing voice tells of his childhood, when he felt safe in his comfortable environment. From there the play goes on to explore the experi­ ences of a dozen different characters.

Borden does a remarkable job of taking on each character. The audience can scarcely believe that the angry male prostitute hidden behind sunglasses is played by the same actor who is the innocent child experiencing the hu­ miliation of growing up Black in a white society. One moment Borden is a preacher instilling the fear of God in his congregation, the next moment he

is a man questioning the validity of Christian faith in the face of all injus­ tices endured by Blacks.

Borden is ultimately concerned with communication in this play. He at­ tempts to convey the experiences that have shaped the Black community in Canada. He wishes to expose the black psyche by communicating the power­ ful feelings which are part of the Black experience. And one of the most perva­ sive emotions in the play is anger.

“Tightrope T im e” achieves Borden’s goal of articulate emotional expression. The imagery is both rich and complicated. The lines present a challenge to even the most attentive of ears, but the essence of each character’s emotion surfaces immedi­ ately despite the multitudes of images - contained in their lines. This is in part due to the body language of the charac­ ters (Borden has amazing control over his eyes and the tone of his voice), the simple yet effective lighting and crea­ tive music.

The play opens and closes with in­ spirational words. In the beginning, an old woman gives her share of wisdom to a young boy, and at the end the narrator directs similar advice to the audience. One leaves with an over­ whelming sense of hope, a feeling that the struggles in life are not in vain.

“Tightrope Time” runs from Sep­ tember 29 until October 10 at the Cen­ taur Theatre. Tickets are $12 for stu­ dents. Reservations: 288-3161

The founders of InterAmicus hope to promote and protect human rights through the devel­ opment and application of interna­ tional human rights laws. The Natan Shcharansky Lectureship has been created in recognition of Shcharansky as a leading advocate of human rights.

The lecture will be given once a year by a person chosen for his or her involve­ ment in the struggle for human rights and human dignity.

“If buildings are to be built,” asked Guini, “is it possible that rooms will be open to non-students as reported in Monday’s Daily ?”

“The Daily story is inaccurate,” Battaglia said. “If a building is found, it will be already built and the landlord will take on a contract with the univer­ sity.” If space is unoccupied, McGill pays the difference. Allowing non­ students into the building would set a legal precedent.

Redmen Hockey Team Issues Challenge to Martlets

by Trib sports staff Although the McGill Redmen hockey team doesn’t begin its regular season until October 17, Coach Ken Tyler has already began an intensive, physical training program for the play­ ers. Tyler has issued a written invita­ tion to several Martlet varsity teams, challenging them to a match in their re­ spective sports. These will not be merely fun exercises to entertain the Redmen, Coach Tyler plans to use the possibility of humiliation as an inspira­ tion to the squad. The theory is that, rather than risking a loss to the girls, the Redmen will give it their all and there­ fore get whipped into shape.

On Monday, September 9, the first co-ed varsity challenge took place at Forbes field. The Women’s Rugby Football Club (WRFC) foolishly ac­ cepted the invitaition to a rugby scrim­ mage. Due to the relative size and lack of experience on behalf of the hockey team, it soon became apparent that a se­ rious match would be suicidal.

WRFC Coach, Ray Lefevbe, de­ cided on a safer alternative: four mixed teams would play two-hand touch. (Or is that two mixed teams playing four hand touch) This arrangement worked surpris­

ingly well for the first half, although there was a marked tendency for the Redmen to play football rather than rugby. 40 yard boots and long, spiral passes were characteristic of Redmen play.

In the second half, however, all four teams braved scrum formation in an over-zealous attempt to play some “real rugby”. The ensuing aches and pains testified to the "realness” of the game. Injuries incurred were not all serious but two female hookers were apparently “squashed”.

The next challenge is a basketball game featuring the best of the Martlets against the McGill skaters. Game time is 7p.m. tonight; all fans welcome.

The crucial match, and true battle of the sexes will take place September 25, as the Women’s Swim team enters the pool for a game of water polo against the skateless Redmen.

“I don’t even know how many of my guys swim” conceded Coach Tyler, who did not feel quite up to a challenge of swimming races, “I figure they’re going to whip our butts bad enough in water polo,” he said.

Water polo is no slack sport, espe­ cially for those who spend most of their training time on a frozen surface.

Coach Tyler feels that this particular event will be great for conditioning his athletes. Not only will the endurance factor of a water sport come into play, but the inherent male ego should also make this a serious workout for the men. “My guys are going to die! ” Tyler told the Tribune.

Quebec Athletes and Coaches to Receive Scholarships

by Jam ie Alden and Ken Muss Last Wednesday at a press confer­ ence at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel, Sports Experts of Canada announced a $70,000 donation to the Foundation for Quebec University Athletics. This do­ nation is the second major contribution to the Foundation in over a month, and will finance a substantial segment of their scholarship program to support male and female coaches of Quebec.

On August 20th Ultramar of Canada presented Board of Governors Presi­ dent Pierre Lortie with a cheque of $150,000. These monies received so far are a step in the right direction for the F.Q.U.A. who act as a financial vehicle for expanding the insufficient scholarship program for student-ath­ letes in Quebec. Lortie said following the conference, “our goal is a million dollars in donations.” Every bit will help as many of Quebec’s top Cegep athletes are making the choice to travel to the United States for more money and a university education. One of the F.Q.U.A’s aims is to remedy this prob­ lem. Scholarships will be granted in four categories, rewarding athletes for both academic and athletic prowess and coaches for yearly achievements.

Sports Experts donation allows for the establishment of coaching scholar­ ships earlier then originally estimated.

Two scholarships to female and male university coaches of the year will be awarded ‘Sports Experts Scholarships’ at the Gala of Governors October 28th.

When asked about the distribution of funds and whether there would be more scholarships opened up to coaches in Quebec, Lortie was evasive and re­ sponded by saying, “more donations means more scholarships. It all de­ pends on the business community.”

Two McGill coaches are nominated for the Sports Experts awards. Geraldine

Dubrule, women’s synchronized swim coach is up for the female scholarship while Men’s and Women’s track and field coach Dennis Barrett is vying for the male scholarship.

It looks as though the F.Q.U.A has taken the right approach to persuade donations from the Monteal business community. Working for the Founda­ tion are ex-Olympians Gaétan Boucher and Sylvie Bernier , two big name personalities in Quebec who are bound to help publicize the F.Q.U.A’s goals.

The latest donations raise the current total to $600,000, meaning Quebec student-athletes should soon be receiv­ ing small awards for their achieve­ ments.
