Programming Network

by Brian Todd The Program Board is dead, long live the McGill Programming Network! The Students' Society this summer changed the name of their programming body to reflect the changes that were made to the structure of that group in the late spring of this year.

According to Mike Orr, V.P. Internal of the Students' Society, the name change was made to reflect “ the new image we are trying to project. The old n am e b ro u g h t-u p im ag e s of bureaucracy and the state. The con­ notations that the new name will bring are hopefully of a network of in­ dividuals, working together. It is a pool­ ing of talent rather than a more formal structure."

The changes to the Program Board/Programming Network seem relatively simple. Instead of there being a central chairman of the Board and co­ ordinators of various activities there are now six different chairpersons. Two new committees have been added. Per­ forming Arts will have a $4000 budget to be spent on classical music and possibly theatre performances. The Alternative Programming Committee has its emphasis on participatory pro­ gramming such as games and contests.

As well, lunch-time concerts and jazz

and folk recitals would be included in this budget.

The reliance upon six individuals rather than one has already been tested.

The new structure allows "each chair­ man the freedom in how he wants to set-up the committee," detailed Mike Orr. Thus the strength of the committee depends on the strength of the chair­ man.

Two chairman have yet to be found, one for the Performing Arts Committee and the other for the Winter Carnival Committee. Speaking on the subject of the Performing Arts Committee, Mike Orr confessed, "it's exciting because of its newness but frightening at the same time. It requires a special individual. In the case of the other committees there is past experience to go by but with Per­ forming Arts and Alternate Programm­ ing, we're starting right from scratch."

Remarking on the effectiveness of the new system, Orr said of course there would be deficiencies. "W e are dealing with new people and new structures."

He did cite Welcome Week as an exam­ ple of how one chairman could use the resouces of others, such as the Concert and Dances Chairman or the Chairman of the Speakers Program.

Despite the apparent cohesiveness of the Programming Network, already

there appears to have been a breakdown of communications. Accor­ ding to Earle Taylor, Program Direclbr for StudSoc, the New Regime concert scheduled for next week was cancelled and replaced by a Rational Youth con­ cert, "due to a three-way mix-up on the part of the agent, the manager and the (Programming) Network."

The overall budget for programming has not changed significantly. "There will be a general pool for administra­ tion, advertisements for volunteers but long-distance calls and other individual items will be kept on separate budgets," explained Marie Davis, StudSoc V.P. Finance. Davis also pointed out that concerts and dances would be run so that they pay for themselves and thus not incur a larger deficit. However, Davis would not concede that this might involve raising the admission prices to these events.

When questioned whether the move to a group of six chairmen rathej than one co-ordinating chairman would mean more contact between the chairmen and the Program Director, Taylor replied that "yes, it would pro­ bably mean a bit more contact with the chairmen."

Action '85 Celebrates IYY

It's our celebration— Action '85 is an ambitious project which began in February of this year as a mere glint in the eye of organizers, Robert Vézina and Diane Sokolyk. Fuelled by their enthusiasm, the project has expanded to include many more activities than originally planned. "It just snowballed as people became caught up with the idea" smil­ ed co-coordinator, Sokolyk.

The week of September 23-27 kicks off with a gala opening on lower cam­ pus complete with a marching band, balloon launch, and flag-raising. All the events scheduled for the week will reflect the three themes designated by the United Nations for International Youth Year: Peace, Development, and Participation. In addition, the week is designed as an invitation to McGill Students and to the city of Montreal to get better acquainted. "It's a great op­ portunity for the students to see and try new things", says co-coordinator,

Vézina, mentioning the Montreal Sym­ phony Orchestra, the Museum of Fine Arts, and the Montreal Board of Trade as a few examples of groups par­ ticipating in the exhibits.

T he exhibits are the backbone of A c­ tion '85. They represent a wide diversity of interests from politics to culture to science. Every visitor to the exhibits, which will take place in the Leacock and Arts buildings on Tuesday, Septem ber 24 and W e d n esd a y, September 25, will certainly find something to suit his or her taste.

Besides the exhibits, theme speakers are a highlight of "Action '8 5 ". They in­ clude Robert Bourassa, leader of the Québec Liberal Party, speaking on the role of youth in the political process.

His talk will address specific Canadian and Quebec issues, which will be an especially interesting introduction to the Canadian political scene for the in­ ternational students at M cGill.

be Geoffrey Pearson, the director of the Canadian Institute of Peace and Securi­ ty. He will lecture in the Moot Court (McGill Law Faculty) on Thursday, September 26, on the topic of youth, peace, and the arms race. It will be of special interest, given the recent developments in Canada's participation in cruise testing and the S.D .I. program, to hear Mr. Pearson's views on the im­ pact citizens have on the formulation of defence policy.

On Friday, September 27, a panel of economic commentators will debate the currently controversial issue of youth unemployment and give their suggestions as to how youth can best prepare for today's rapidly changing market. The speakers are: Marie-Josée Drouirl, Executive Director of the Hud­ son Institute, Harvey Weiner, President of the Provincial Association of Protes­ tant Teachers, and Jim Gannon, VicePresident, Human Resource Develop­ ment at the Royal Bank.

Never fear, culture vultures! There will be a Violin performance on Tuesday night at Pollock Hall be an outstanding McGill music faculty student, MarieFrance Geoffroy. Also on the culture billboard is an innovative video presen­ tation by Mario Bonenfant. This 23 yearold film-maker won a Canadian place in a "film race" and went on to take se­ cond place in the.overall worldwide competition. Armed with onjy a camera and $10,000, Mario Bonenfant travelled around the world to produce an original series of video vignettes in twenty-two countries touching on such varied sub­ jects as collecting bird nests for bird's nest soup in Borneo, and a hotel for cats in Los Angeles.

One event which truly embodies the ideals of International Youth Year is the benefit dinnner on Thursday at 6:00 pm in the Union cafeteria. All proceeds will be donated to local youth groups, and the fraternities and sororities will be ser­ ving up the spaghetti. There's even entertainment, in the form of "Theatre Schm eatre", an irreverent improv group.

The week will draw to a close with a dance/concert featuring Long John Baldry and Roy Harper in the Union Ballroom. Coincidentally, this event also follows the Shaugnessy Cup Foot­ ball game, so we can expect a doubly lively party at the Ballroom.

Students' Society: Five Executives and Change

by Michael Smart StudSoc Executive is renovating its of­ fices this year. That's one of the first changes one notices in returning to the Union building after the summer. The project involves mainly the addition of an "executive reception area" to the StudSoc general office.

The change, explains new VP Internal Mike Orr, is intended to make Executive members more accessible to students.

Until now, students have had to wait at the office counter until served by a secretary. Many have complained about this rigidly enforced barrier bet­ ween students and their government. .

"You don't like to be shouted at when you're trying to see your representative," said Orr. "W e're trying to get away from (the present system). I hate it."

Small though this change is, it seems to signal a shift in the general philosophy of student government at M cGill. And it is far from the only change, for, as President James Green is fond of stating, this is to be a year of change.

Thus far, Green has been faithful to his word. The first innovations came to light last April, a few weeks after the election, when it was announced that Students' Council would for the first time continue to meet throughout the summer. That allowed the Executive and Joint Management Committee—the gro u p w h ic h re v ie w s S tu d So c finances—to meet twice a week, Green explains.

"Those meeting were very valuable for us," Green says now. "W e couldn't have done what we have otherwise."

That's especialy good news when one remembers the remarkable admission of Yat K. Lo, the previous VP Internal, that when he arrives in September, "I had no idea what I was supposed to be doing."

The summer meetings meant time to, among other things, plan the renova­ tions (which go well beyond the ex­ ecutive offices), to arrange room reassignm ents w ithin the Union building and to organise financing for three new computers for Students' Society. And for VP Finance Marie Davis, the summer was time to inten­ sively review club budgets with an eye to deficit-cutting.

Green has much more planned for the coming months. A fee for use of the Ballroom has been instituted to discourage student drinking, and a new constitution and a debt-repayment plan are in the works.

So far, the new Executive has worked well together, Green believes, and the other four seem to agree. That too is a change from last year, when frictions withing the Executive would at times turn into public outbursts.

The compatability of the new Ex­ ecutive is probably Green's own achievement. Last spring, Green suc­ ceeded in electing all four candidates he endorsed, against the opposition of the Alliance, a federation of members with a progressive stance on issues like disarmament and disinvestment.

But will the election of a slate result in government by clique, the bane of truly open and receptive student govern­ ment? Green doesn't think so.

"In general, I don't think slates are a healthy thing. If everyone runs as an in­ dividual, only the strongest candidates will win.

"W hen I found myself running against a slate, I formed one of my own.

I felt it was the only way to get anywhere."

Green denies that the new Executive could be considered a clique. He points out that he met Luc Joli-Coeur, his can­ didate for VP External, just two weeks before polling day. He also points out that his Executive comes from many dif­ ferent faculties across campus. Two ex­ ecutives from Science, and one each from Music, Arts and Graduate Studies.

Green says the key to good relations within the Executive is that each member should have his or her own responsibilities and duties. "I don't believe I should be doing everybody's job. It's my job to coordinate—that makes them more important."

However, at least one observer of StudSoc politics doesn't believe duties are adequately shared. The source ask­ ed not to be named and said that VP Ex­ ternal Luc Joli-Coeur was not really capable of looking after his portfolio.

"I'm amazed that he's got this far," the source said. " I understand that the other executives have had to cover for him. He's become an outsider within the Executive."

Proudman is editor of the McGill Magazine, a publication dedicated to conservative concerns on campus. He supported Green during the election in order to prevent the progressive Alliance candidates from gaining office.

Moreover, Joli-Coeur had not been Green's first choice for the portfolio, and, unlike the other executives, had no political experience at M cGill.

"If we were a clique, I think it would be terrible for Students' Society," Green reiterates. "They (cliques) are practical­ ly dictatorships—they never see the other side of an issue."

In contrast, the present executive has frequent differences of opinion, Green says. Marie Davis agrees: "W e often have different points of view. But we're all willing to listen and compromise.

That results in a good exchange of ideas."

Green points to the renegotiation of the Daily office lease as an example of a contentious issue for the Executive. The new tentative agreement with former editor Leeia Madhava Rau would in­ crease the rent from one dollar to $1760 per year, and would give Students' Council one non-voting representative at Daily staff meetings.

With his own slate elected, Green's main problem this year may well be his re la t io n s w ith th e A llia n c e .

Disagreements with Alliance members could conceivably jeopardize some of Green's plans for the year.

Although the A llian ce has no represantatives on the Executive, four of its members sit on Council and many others sit on influential StudSoc com­ mittees. One A lliance councillor, Stephen Hum, sits on the pivotal Joint Management Committee and four of nine members of the Nominating Com­ mittee are also from the Alliance.

" I don't know if James had anything to do with (the appointment)," he said.

"This could well be a direct attempt to stop the Alliance from running in the next election."

However, in general, Crawhall is pleased with the new Executive. "They seem to work well together and are quite open to Alliance ideas. They're really very ambitious."

Green has been very helpful to the South Africa Committee, Crawhall said, allowing SAC to adjust its terms of reference to make divestment from South Africa an offical goal. Numerous Executives in the past have refused to make similar changes.

Concerh over a right-wing shift in StudSoc politics grew this year following the ap­

C ra w h a ll, the A llia n ce 's presidential candidate last March, is dismayed by the appointment of Proud­ man to the position of CRO . The CRO is in charge of all StudSoc elections and must be unbiased, he said, which Pro­ udman clearly is not. The Alliance plans to appeal the appointment to Judicial Board.

Crawhall says he's seen none of the retaliation against Alliance clubs that some had feared. In fact, he says, rela­ tions between the fourth floor and the Executive are the best he's ever seen.

"Budgeting (for the clubs) has been done in a Very humane manner," he said. "And there's been absolutely no settling of scores against the Alliance."

An evaluation of the Green formula for student government will have to wait for at least a few months. But it is clear that balancing Green's complex and often conflicting priorities—the clubs, the deficit and service to the in­ dividual student—will be a difficult task.

The obstacles to his success probably

lie more in his own Executive than in the potential opposition of the Alliance.

But, as always with Students' Society, the obstacles will be great, founded as they are in inexperience and lack of oe and money.

And yet it seems that we can expect luch from this year's C o u n cil, rawhall himself concurs, waxing aetic: "In terms of putting their money here their mouth is, they're very good, ley're movers and doers."

Daily Fee Challenged

by Adeeb Khalid Those of our readers who have a streak of the elephant in them, and whose memories consequently reach back to before the summer, would recall a referendum initiated by the Board of Directors of the Daily Publica­ tions Society (DPS) asking for an in­ crease in the fees paid by students by students for the Daily and their equalization across all faculties.

That referendum has been the cause of considerable controversy over the summer in which the Post Graduate Students' Society (PGSS) has been at loggerheads with the DPS. The issue has gone from Senate to the Board of Governors and back and it still awaits implementation.

While the referendum did not pass the fee increase, it did approve the equalization clause. PGSS, whose members pay $3.30 less than full time undergraduates, immediately lodged a complaint with the Judicial Board of the DPS questioning the constitutionality of the referendum. Although the Judicial Board upheld the referendum, when DPS referred the matter to the Board of Governors for executive implementa­ tion, it was passed on to Senate which vo te d to re co m m e n d non­ implementation of the measure.

"W e are very upset," says Melinda Wittstock, interim editor-in-chief of the Daily. She sees it as an issue of democratic procedure. "Senate has claimed the right to overrule student opinion. The vote of the student body has been turned down by Senate because o f pressure from one organisa­ tion (PGSS). This is a very bad prece­ dent."

Brendan Weston, interim senior news editor, claims that pressure and lobby­ ing by PGSS and a great deal of

misunderstanding and misinformation were the reasons for the Senate vote.

"M any Senators thought that DPS and its Judicial Board were the staff of the Daily themselves. Besides, many com­ pletely irrelevant issues were discussed at the meeting," he said.

PGSS also sees the controversy as a point of principle. Bill Brierly, VP Finance, claims the referendum was "very poorly run and the entire student body voted on the issue that was of con­ cern to graduate students. The tradi­ tional distinction between graduate and u n d e rg ra d u a te stu d e n ts was obliterated." Besides, Brierly feels that the interests of the 1600 to 1700 addi­ tional session students who are seldom on campus were not considered.

PGSS is still pressing for non­ implementation despite the Judicial Board ruling. "That decision was technically correct, but it was only because their constitution is weak on

this point. It was not the most ethical thing to do," Brierly says.

The Senate vote was not the end of the matter. When the Board of Gover­ nors executive received the Senate recommendation for ratification, it sent the matter back to Senate for "more ad­ vice ". There the matter stands since Senate has hot met again this summer.

The non-implementation has meant, however, that the DPS lost the $8000 it would have received from the fall fees which have already been collected.

"This is a great problem for us," Melin­ da Wittstock complains. "Since we didn't know what we were going to get, we have not been able to draw up a proper budget."

by Adeeb Khalid "D on't leave Unesco!" was former A ustralian Prime M inister Gough Whitlam's message to Canadians in a speech delivered at a luncheon organiz­ ed by the Canadian secretariat of the In­ ternational Association of Universities last Wednesday at the Four Seasons hotel.

Whitlam, now his country's perma­ nent representative at Unesco, spoke at a time when the U .S., the biggest con­ tributor to the Unesco budget, has withdrawn from the organization; when Britain has given notice of withdrawal; and when Canada might be considering a similar action.

Whitlam pointed to Unesco's role in fostering education and science in the Third World and feared that Canada's withdrawal would seriously affect the anglophone presence in the organiza­ tion.

"Canada is the third largest Englishspeaking nation in the world. It is also the second largest francophone nation.

This gives Canada great prestige and in­ fluence in the numerous developing countries that use these languages," Whitlam said. But this also means that Canada has a responsibility to these countries which it could be shirking by withdrawing.

For the only way, according to Whitlam, to reform Unesco is from within. He acknowledged that Unesco is inefficiently run and that its executive board is unwieldy, but "this is because o fth e growth in the size of the United Nations system over the years and Unesco is not alone in this," Whitlam pointed out. Indeed, "Unesco has taken the lead in self-evaluation among United Nations agencies," he said.

The speech was a fairly standard defence of Unesco. What made it dif­ ferent was the passion with which it was delivered and the reminder it contained to Canadians of their nation's special role in the two language worlds. The select audience was somewhat disap­ pointed when its questions could not be answered due to time constraints.

by Jillian Cohen Student groups will be charged $200 for the rental of the University Centre Ballroom, according to a memorandum from Stud Soc President James Green dated August 27, 1985. However, club$ who wish to avoid the fee can do so by paying 25% of their profits and letting the Student Society operate the bar, the memo also said.

According to the memo, the fee was instituted to prevent student alcohol abuse and to help cover the cost of operating the Ballroom. In return for the payment, the Student Society will pro­ vide a qualified bar manager who will have control over the sale of alcohol.

"M arie Davis (V.P. Finance) felt the clubs were able to sell beer at drastical­ ly reduced prices which has Contributed to the excessive student drinking. The rental fee will undoubtedly result in an increase in the price of beer and should curb drinking, she said.

"W e are not trying to stop people from drinking or having a good time but to stop outright and obnoxious drunkedness." said Mike Orr (V.P. In­ ternal)

Davis believes the operation of the bar by an experienced bar manager "w ill allow clubs to avoid losses in spillage and free beer.” In the past, beer had been "Wasted by inexperienced volunteer bartenders who would give it free to their friends.

Beatrice Piajmans, a member of the Engineering Undergraduate Society, stated she would rather keep bar con­ trol within the club. However, she add­ ed that the E.U.S. had not enough time to reflect upon the decision.

Davis and Orr both believe the money saved from the rental fee will benefit the student body by being pumped into the Society's budget and flowing into other student programs.

They announced that the Stud Soc will also be more directly linked to the clubs by meeting with them to discuss organization of the bar and security for the events.

The rental fee will not be placed upon the Ballroom until January 1986. The se­ cond semester will thus be a trial period in the battle of the budget and the drunk.

Warm Welcome Well Underway by )acquie Muir Welcome Week '85 is well underway after four long months of meeting, letter writing and sleepless nights. The events have been planned for YO U . So we would really appreciate it if you would come out and see what's happening. It's a great way to get back into school life and meeting new people is guaranteed.

The theme is G O HAW AIIAN , TOGETHER! The events will continue until Saturday, September 14th. This is your chance to share some summer fun in the sun with all your friends who have been away all summer. The Hawaiian style is in, so you have no ex­ cuse not to go out there looking as tropical as you can. We stuck in the TO GETH ER to remind everyone that M cGill is made up of many faculties and schools and Welcome Week is schedul­ ed for all of you.

Welcome Week is a series of events prepared to orient new students to entertainment at M cGill. It includes fun and unconventional events to help everyone relax and get to know some new people. For returning students it's a great way to welcome you all back.

A great deal of dedicated work went into the planning of everything from workshops and wild contests to the great bands and other acts that have been scheduled.

The following is just a brief outline of the events that have been scheduled for this week. For more complete informa­ tion check out the posters that are located around the campus.

Tonight things get under way with comedy night when the normally sedate Pollock Concert Hall will be rocked by laughter. The night features Steve Brinder, star of the television show, "Just Kidding." Joining Steve are The Norm Duo, who worked on the new adult comedy "Follow that Bird" and Evan Carter, a veteran of Yuk Yuk's as well as the nightclub circuit.

Wednesday, fans of top 40 funk will have their turn on the dance-floor as New York based ban Tranzit deal out the funk and reggae as few other bands can. Tranzit will be playing the

Ballroom of the Union Building.

An open-air concert will highlight Thursday's events. You may have miss­ ed the Boss at home in Newark or Toronto but a little of that Springsteen magic will grace the lower campus as The Glory do their best to make you wish you were born in the U.S.A. Close your eyes and think of Pittsburgh!

On Friday, you may not be even able to slither home after the annual Frat Crawl takes its terrible toll. Not for the faint of heart.

If crawling's not your style there is a theme party going on Friday at Gert's complete with hula and limbo contests.

(Which islands did you say these were?).

Saturday night is the Grand Finale of Welcome Week and incredible as it may seem, the Union Building will be turned into, four different Hawaiian islands, thanks to the good spirits at The Network. Oahu (up till now the Alley) will feature Live Jive with well-known jivers Ron Proby (saxing and singing) and Paul Revere (tinkling the old ivories). Maui (Gertrude's Pub and Danceteria) features one of your favorite local D.J.'s and too much dance music. Kauai (really the cafeteria but don't tell anyone) will be the location of the music to eat freshly-made breakfast by from 1 a.m. to 4.

But the island probably most visited will be Hawaii (you guessed it, the Ballroom), where Juno nominee, for most promising group, Rational Youth will play for a hometown crowd. Tracey Howe, of Rational Youth, is certainly no newcomer to the M ontreal, music scene. He has been the backbone of Ra­ tional Youth's synth-sound for many a year. Although it has been a few years since the band caught national attention with their single "Saturday in Silesia", they are back with a new album, "Heredity" and a new single "No more and No Less” which has been playlisted across the nation on both radio and the nation's music station, MuchMusic.

by Rollin L.T. Milroy I think OMDs greatest problem is im­ patience. The critics, the public, and most importantly the band itself, all seem to know that somewhere in this duo lurks a truly great album. Unfor­ tunately the musicians seem to be too impatient to let this Great Album grow and develop. Instead, they have chosen a hit and miss strategy; they churn out an album every year or so in the hope that eventually one of them will be The Album.

Their latest release, Crush, is the third album to be released in as many sum­ mers. In that time the band has toured North America and Europe, some cities twice. This immediately makes one wonder just how much time they can devote to their recordings.

Unlike the entire second side of Daz­ zle Ships, whose only excuse for ex­ istence could be to make the record an LP rather than an EP, there are no really terrible or unlistenable songs on Crush.

However, unlike Junk Culture, which is probably the closest the band has come to The Album, there is no brilliance on Crush. 'The Native Daughters O f The Golden West' and 'The Lights Are G o­ ing Out' are the only big duds on this the album, and the remainder are plea­

sant enough songs. But unfortunately, in the difference between pleasant and good music lies the difference between pleasant and good albums. t a/o of the more notable songs are 'Bloc Bloc Bloc' and 'La Femme Accident', but even these offer only a flash of brilliance where more lies.

OM D has never been known for its lyrics, and this record is no exception.

'So In Love' caused me to chuckle for purely personal reasons, but the lyrics in all the songs seem to be primarily concerned with women (actually, a lot of them involve women of ill repute, if you know what I mean— perhaps a lurking guilty conscience). It appears the albums title refers to a combination of the initial crush in a relationship, and the crushed feeling when .it ends.

Although this review may not show it, I like OM D. However, I do not think much of Crush: the best thing about it is the cover but what it contains is less than one might expect. Because I like the band I am prepared to sit back and wait for The. album, and I hope it ar­ rives, more for the sake of the band than anyone else. But look on the bright side; I am sure we will not have to wait long for their next album.

MFS Rolls Film

by Kevin Davis The Film Society needs tots of new members to help make this the best year ever. People are needed to work as cashiers and ticket takers, and to distribute posters around campus. We also need a projectionist to show movies on Thursday nights.

There is a $2.00 membership fee which includes free admission to movies all year long provided that members work at least once a month for the Society. Thirty-three free movies per semester for just two dollars and a few hours of your time is certainly a super deal.

If you are interested in becoming a member of the Film Society, you are

asked to attend a general meeting on Tuesday, September 17 at 5:00 pm in the Union Ballroom. You may also sign up at Activities Night on September 15.

Members and executive at Radio M cGill are often asked where exactly the radio station can be heard. This year CFRM hopes that this question will no longer present a problem, as they hope to increase not only student awarencess of the station but also their listening audience as a whole. No longer will CFRM be exiled to the small corners of McGill campus. With new speaker installations, an enthusiastic ex­ ecutive and afternoon and weekend evening broadcasting in Gertrude's Pub, Radio McGill hopes to maintain a high profile.

The Student's Society of M cGill has asked CFRM to begin broadcasting in Ger­ trude's Pub between 11 am and 4 pm, in addition to their DJ services on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. In order to provide a'better alternative than the ever repetitive jukebox. Radio M cGill has instituted an "all requests-played" policy.

During its daytime broadcasting hoursAall students are invited to place a request for their favorite song,'and CFRM promises that they will play all such requests, if available, within 15 minutes.

I The decision to play Radio M cGill in Gertrude's came about as a result of student dissatisfaction with the variety of music offered by the jukebox. To solve this dilem­ ma, the executive of the Student's Council asked Radio McGill if the station could provide a more accessible format during the day. CFRM responded that it would be quite willing to change its daytime musical format in order to accomodate M cGill students in Gertrude's. To further this end, the radio station instituted its request policy to give students a voice in the musical format of all daytime programming.

Radio McGill will also be mounting an extensive promotional campaign this year to obtain a full license to broadcast on FM. With the publication of a program guide detailing the services at CFRM, they hope to increase audience awareness of the sta­ tion, making it recognizable as M cGill's own radio station. They also plan to publish CFRM's Top 20 Playlist weekly in the McGill Tribune to keep listeners abreast of the music which represents the backbone of their programming.

It is hoped that an FM application will l '. 'eady for submission in December and pending its approval the following year CFRM will be available to all listeners on the FM dial. Changes in the executive policies of Radio McGill have provided a strong base for the station's hopes of becoming an FM Radio Station. With student support, CFRM looks forward to broadcasting on the FM dial next year. All students in­ terested in furthering this goal are invited to apply for a position at Radio McGill at their office in room B-11 of the University Center.

The play opens on Evy's friend Jimmy (Daniel Vail) as he waits for Evy to return from the sanatorium where she has been undergoing therapy for the last ten weeks. When Evy arrives with her other close friend Toby (Denyse Dauphinais), it becomes evident that she has not been "cured" and the old hangups are still present.

The tensions surface at Toby's birth­ day party where Jimmy announces he has lost yet another part and Toby reveals she has been asked for a divorce. The plights of both her friends cause Evy to return to the bottle.

The ray of light in an otherwise fairly

by Heather Clancy Players theatre set its 1985-86 into motion last Tuesday night with the preview of Neil Simon's "The Ginger­ bread Lady." Although the evening was fairly enjoyable, the performance was marred by a noticeable number of line flubs and bad timing which caused some of Simon's witty dialogue to fall flat.

"The Gingerbread Lady" deals with the life of Evy (Suzanne Manning), an alcoholic has-been singer, as well as the problems of her equally pitiable friends.

Set in New York City, all of the play's action takes place in the living room of Evy's apartment, a room decorated with

foil. She is the one who fondly remembers a gingerbread house her mother gave her many years ago.

Although it now consists only of crumbs, this doesn't matter, a new one can be found somewhere.

The individual characters in the play presented themselves fairly well, but the interaction did not seem natural. It seemed as if the actors were still trying to perfect their own parts rather than make the relatio n sh ips between themselves work. However, I did notice an improvement during the second act.

The relationship between mother and daughter was the one which worked the best with good performances given by

bleak situ atio n is P o lly (T racy McElligott), Evy's daughter. Her unjad­ ed outlook brings an element of hope into the plot, and one can't help think­ ing that some of the resilency of youth will eventually be transferred to her mother.

"The Gingerbread Lady" is a thoughtprovoking play which deals with the faces people put on to hide their true in­ ner feelings. Whether it is actual makeup, w hich Toby applies to camouflage her aging beauty, or a bot­ tle which changes how Evy sees things, they are merely ornaments that shade the truth.

" T h e G ingerbread L a d y " runs through September 21, with the excep­ tion of Sunday and Monday, at 8:00 P.M. in the Player's Theatre. Reserva­ tions may be made by calling 392-8989, or 482-2963. Tickets are $4 for students and $5 for the general public. Although the performance I saw was often flaw­ ed, I attribute much of this to the fact that it was preview night. With a little more time in the oven, "The Ginger­ bread Lady" should be well worth see­ ing before September 21.

These few words of explanation will give you a background to the Tribune, its history, goals and basic philosophy.

The Tribune is published by the Stu­ dent Society of M cGill University (StudSoc). We were born in 1980 as an alter­ native to the Daily providing what Students' Council thought was a missing emphasis on StudSoc. In the intervening years both the Daily and Tribune have changed. The Tribune is now a weekly paper which concentrates on news, entertainment and sports and new for this year, loinger features. All of our content attempts to concentrate on StudSoc, and the surrounding McGill community .in all of its diversity.

You'll find a listing of the week's events on page two of the Tribune and any other bits of pertinent information concerning M cGill happenings can be gleaned from the other pages.

McGill Sports

by Aldo Creon It is time once again for another season of McGill sports. Most students here have little or no knowledge of the teams at M cGill, so in an effort to rectify this situation, I am presenting the first ever, Tribune primer on Inter-Collegiate sports.

Football: In recent years, the football Redmen have fielded good but inconsis­ tent teams. The Redmen can be counted on to play average football un­ til late in the season at which point they usually produce a couple of outstanding efforts in order to make the playoffs.

Other teams in M cGill's conference in­ clude Bishop's, Carleton, Ottawa and C o n c o rd ia . W h ile the M c G illConcordia rivalry is exciting, Queen's is our nemesis in the conference. Last year, Queen's sent about 1/4 of its stu­ dent body to Montreal for M cGill's homecoming game. Queen's won, and after the game, 3,000 drunken denizens of Kingston went on a rampage. Unfor­ tunately, Queen's doesn't play here this season.

Soccer: Although McGill lost the Canadian championship last year, the Redsocs are a powerhouse. It is a strange occurence when M cGill loses twice a season, and it is even more unbelievable when they fail to win the Quebec championship.

Hockey: The enigma among McGill teams. In the last three seasons, the Redhocs have opened the year with long winning streaks, only to falter in time for the important games. Still, Coach Ken Tyler usually produces a

team that is exciting to watch. When the Redhocs are hot, they beat everybody, but when they are flat, they lose to every team. Hopefully, this will be the year that the hockey- team puts the pieces together in order to challenge last year's champs the Carleton Ravens.

Basketball: The cream of the crop among Quebec basketball teams. Not only do the Redmen own a 21-3 record in divisional play over the past two seasons, they have also begun to hold their own against the best teams from the rest of Canad a. Coach Ken Schildroth leads a team that is strong at almost every position.

The Martlet basketball team is also a force in Quebec. The last few years have seen them climb to the top.

Other Teams: M cGill fields teams in a wide range of sports, from Rugby to Synchronized Swimming. Most of these teams play in front of crowds consisting mainly of friends and family, which br­ ings me to the next topic...

Fans: The Football Redmen play in front of between 1,200 and 3,000 fans.

The Hockey team averages about 400 spectators per game, which is twice as many as show up for a basketball or soccer game. I don't know if the size of a crowd can help a team perform better, but I believe that although there is a large potential audience for sports here at M cGill, the administration allocates so little money towards the promotion of these sports, that most students are unaware where or when the games take Dlace.

biggest football crowd in years (5,500 vs. Queen's last year) consisted mainly of opposing fans. The same thing hap­ pens when Concordia plays Hockey here. If Concordia fans take the bus to McGill to see a game, why won't our

students even walk to the arena?

Oh well, maybe one day the situation will change, but for the time being, few students here attend these games.
