Inter. Pretation Inter. Pretation

2024
Media College Denmark

In INTER.PRETATION two different creative fields have met to combine their respective skills to collaborate on a series of photos and video. Students of photography from Media College Denmark have interpreted different pieces of fashion design made by design students from Designskolen in Kolding. The creative visual results of the different interpretations can be found in this digital booklet.

When creative fields meet in such a project, the key to a fruitful collaboration is the creative process, where the fashion design students and the students of photography have been brainstorming and developing the photographic and cinemagraphic interpretation of the designers’ work.

Media College Denmark and Designskolen Kolding are proud to present the first edition of the joint project: INTER.PRETATION And please remember to see the project videos on behance. net (link is available in the footer of the booklet).

Enjoy!

ELEGANT vs. INELEGANT Design: Valdís Arnaldardóttir Photo: Stine Rosemunte

The design is based on the division between the elegant and the inelegant. The look is flashy, fancy and somewhat exaggerated; Yet still meant to be comfortable and easy to wear.

IN CONTROL

Design: Anna Hald Nielsen Photo: Sara Premate

This design was made in a way, that focuses on the feeling of control a uniform exudes.

The designer Anna Hald has worked with how much control she can incorpurate in the garment, and with that how much control she can deprive the person wearing it.

Through the construction of the garment, a straight posture with a lifted chin is inforced, to underline the loss of control the person is in, while wearing the clothes.

Think about the last time you saw a dandelion scurry up through the asphalt. Think about how it was surrounded by supreme brick-buildings and unfamiliar shapes opposite its congeners. Perhaps the rain mizzled down quietly from the sky. Maybe, the sun even began to generously share its rays only a fraction of a second later.

Funny, isn’t it?

If you think about it, two incompatible components live in coexistence all the time

The laughter and the sadness.

The tidy desk owned by a cluttery mind.

The yellow dandelion in a grey city.

The duality may be subtle. Perhaps even everyday-forgotten. But the witnessed symbiosis of contrasts testifies a strong necessity.

Take a look once again on the dandelion’s forceful blooming. In all its places.

It might not be that funny, after all.

By the way, this story is not about dandelions.

Changeable / Unchangeable

An attempt to visualize and express the idea of how our identity is changeable throughout life, while the self, our building block of identity, will always remain the same. The silhouette of the design represents our identity and the self.

The changeable and the unchangeable.

Sand Meeting Water

Inspired by the way the sea softly kisses the surface of a sand beach, this design embraces the elements of nature most elegantly.

The sheer, flowy material imitates the movement of the gentle breeze and the mesmerising dance of sunlight through the waves.

Texture in the shirt mimics wet sand being sculptured beneath the soft touch of the waves and thereby forming waves of themselves.

The delicate shades of blue and beige emphasises the calm, yet clear contrast between the warm sun-kissed sand and the cool ever-changing salt water.

Together, it all elegantly complements each other in the most dreamy of ensembles and presents the wearer in complete tranquility and harmony.

Clean, Sharp and “Perfect”

Perfectly Imperfect Design: Marie Breinbjerg Nielsen Photo: Line Espensen Poulsen

When I design, I find it fascinating to experiment with new shapes and textiles

In this design the designer has worked with pinstripes, geometry and sharp shapes.

Usually pinstripes are used in clothing items like suits, where they would be vertical and create a slimming illusion.

Instead of creating a slimmer look, the different use of the pinstripes brings forward a more disproportionate and skewed look.

In the silhouette of the dress, the use of geometric shapes creates a sharp and clean look, that the pinstripes compliment and contrast at the same time.

BLOW

MY MIND

This design portrays the urge to puff yourself up as a woman in the nightlife. With her design, Sabine Olifent contributes to the ever-going conflict of women feeling unsafe walking home alone. Through this dress, she communicates the yearning to portray a false sense of self to protect the wearer of the dress.

URBAN LIVING

TRANSITIONARY STATES is a project, dealing with the area between A and B

It is exploring all these these minute and everyday places we go through in our daily lives. Places that we never consider or particularly enjoy, but nonetheless places that we exist in. It is the crosswalk, the elevator, the train ride or the walk home through the streets in the rain.

Through the designs, the subject is explored via references to the ultimate transitionary garment; the trench coat, as well as the umbrella, as a sign of change and transition.

When I design, I like to be very playful, and I think it’s exciting to directly translate a feeling. I have tried to express in my design how it can feel walking home alone at night as a woman. You often have a feeling of having to “breathe”, “speak up”, or pretend you’re talking on the phone to make yourself feel safer.

The Human Experiment

Design: Elena Holban Photo: Isak Uyar Orestad

Behind the Concept

The concept challenges the unethical use of animal body parts (skin) for clothing by visualizing the human body as a lab experiment. It aims to evoke empathy for abused animals and highlight the hypocrisy of mistreating other forms of life.

In the concepts universe, the environment is cold, impersonal, eerie, and frightening. AI has taken control and exposes humans to experiments, resembleing the exploitation of animals in our real world.

The final outfit, consisting of a vest and a dress, symbolizes the victimization of humans, reminding us of the suffering we inflict on animals, as the dress was designed so that the wearer resembles the vulnerability of a wounded victim, inside a cage (vest) they cannot escape from.

INDIVIDUALITY

Design: Emilie Kayzen Photo: Oscar Schott Skjoldborg Jørgensen

AND SOCIETY

In our pursuit of independence and personal development, we can overlook the fundamental fact that an individual can only flourish and realize their true identity if they are embedded in communities. Throughout this project a visual narrative is created, which not only pays tribute to the individual, but also celebrates the interwoven network of communities essential to the fulfillment of the individual. These communities acts as carriers of our unique identities and move in harmony with our individual development.

Concept

What happens when you remove all control?

When you become unable to move or see? This becomes reality for the wearer of the design by Anna Hald. The concept builds upon the duality of being in control, and having it taken away. This is achieved and visualized by using rigid material and strict lines that force the wearer to stand in a totalitarian, unmovable state.

I nspired by guard uniforms, totalitarian systems, and the feeling of being trapped, the design creates a monotone and concrete setting striped by all personality and as distant from any self-control as possible.

Id e ntit y

Design: Amalie Grosen Photo: Nina Riis Blæsbjerg

Behind the concept

The inspiration to the project comes from the theory about how we are combined by both an identity and an I/ self. Our identity is fluid and changing in contrast to our self, which is not changing but a constant throughout our lives. Therefore, the black top part of the design is symbolising our constant self and the dress is inspired by wrinkles, representing our identity.

Weekdayfacesss

Every day, the masks we wear serve as a shield, reflecting our personalities and defining who we are. As we step outside, we rely on these masks for protection, but also to highlight our detatchment from repetative patterns of daily life. This sens of comfort and safety nurtures our inner selves.

Dualities, the existence of two conflicting principles, are precisely what make our daily personas intriguing. the coexsistence of opposing traits within ourselves and in the world underlines the complexity of human nature.

Like the resilient tree or the flower that pushes through in the cracks of the asphalt, amidst the chaos of the city life, and carfuffle not out of desire to rebel, or be different, but because we thrive in the symbiosis, and modus vivendi.

ANGER WORLD ANGER ANGER

Anger is one of the feelings that we humans have. Some people feel it more often than others. Displeasure, frustration and hostility is what anger is often associated with. This design takes inspiration, from a feeling.

A feeling everyone has felt. Being so angry that you don’t know what to do or how to feel, and society doesn’t make it any better. You’re being held back from saying what you actually feel.
