DEAR STUDENTS, ALUMNI, PARENTS, AND FRIENDS, It is my pleasure to re-introduce myself to you. As a faculty member in the College of Music and Fine Arts since 1975 and the former associate dean of the college from 1990 to 2013, it is now my honor to serve as the dean of the Loyola University New Orleans College of Music and Fine Arts. Over the years, I have seen firsthand how Loyola’s College of Music and Fine Arts has become the beacon for the arts in the region. Indeed, Loyola has the distinction of being the only Jesuit university with a college of music and fine arts. The faculty, students, and staff of the college wear this honor with pride and with the understanding of what it takes to continue to be a distinguished member of this community. And the outstanding tradition continues. The College of Music and Fine Arts is pleased to present another exciting year in the arts through our Montage Series. This year’s lineup of musical events starts with a collaboration with the university’s Biever Lecture Series to bring to you “An Evening of Improvised Music” with Ken Vandermark, Alvin Fielder, James Singleton, and Loyola professor Jeff Albert. For lovers of keyboard music, our keyboard masterclass series continues with masterclasses and recitals by outstanding pianists from around the world, including School of Music faculty member and award-winning performer Brian Hsu. This season’s opera department renderings are two of Puccini’s one-act works, Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi. Our musical offerings continue with a performance of Mendelssohn’s Elijah featuring our newest faculty member in the voice department, Luretta Bybee, and School of Music alumnus Alfred Walker ’96. Our Department of Theatre Arts and Dance opens its season with Samuel Beckett’s tragic comedy Endgame, followed by the Kander and Ebb musical The World Goes ‘Round. The department will conclude its season with the timeless story of Alice in Wonderland. As usual, the dance department will stage two performances at the end of the fall semester and spring semester. Also in store for dance, the Valentina Kozlova International Ballet Competition Semifinals will be held on our campus in February and March. The Department of Art and Design kicks off its season with the works of alumni Peter Barnitz ’04 and Tasheka Arceneaux-Sutton ’02. Loyola is very fortunate to archive Frére Joseph-Aurélien Cornet’s collection of art of the Congo. The Cornet Collection’s lecture series continues in the month of October. These are but a few of the exciting and stimulating events scheduled in Montage for 2014 – 2015. We could not continue this important work in the arts without the blessing of our very generous and dedicated donors. In recent years, these individuals have supported us with scholarships for outstanding artists, equipment such as pianos, and the construction of Monroe Hall. STUDENTS DRAW, PAINT, BUILD, AND CREATE IN NEWLY RENOVATED DESIGN STUDIOS Creative juices are flowing now more than ever as the College of Music and Fine Arts is unveiling a new Bachelor of Design professional degree program— the only one of its kind in New Orleans—beginning in fall 2014. The new program in the Department of Design is coupled with newly renovated design facilities located in Monroe Hall. The new spaces feature three design studios, two elements studios, and two teaching computer labs with state-of-the-art projection and surround sound systems. The renovations also boast improved classrooms, a screen printing room, a darkroom, and a digital printing and equipment lab. An “Inspiration Wall” in one of the main corridors acts as an exhibit of photos, quotes, and drawings from the students’ favorite designers and artists. “Each student will be assigned a dedicated studio space where they will work for the entire year, providing them an undisturbed, consistent area to draw, paint, build, and create,” associate professor of graphic design Daniela Marx said. The new design facilities are part of Loyola’s overall Monroe Hall renovation, which began in 2012. The completion of the interior construction of the building—set for December 2014—will result in a complete transformation of teaching facilities, creative spaces, and science laboratories, including a new rooftop greenhouse.
INTERNATIONAL OPERA STAR AND EDUCATOR LURETTA BYBEE JOINS LOYOLA An international opera star is now molding a new generation of opera singers as a music professor at the Loyola University New Orleans College of Music and Fine Arts. American mezzo-soprano Luretta Bybee, known early on in her career for singing the title role in the world tour of Peter Brook’s La Tragedie de Carmen, also performed in 2014 with the New Orleans Opera in Massenet’s Cendrillon. Bybee, who continues to star in operas nationwide, is married to Loyola alumnus Greer Grimsley ‘76, another international opera star who recently sang the role of Wotan for the Metropolitan Opera’s Ring Cycle in Robert Lepage’s landmark production in spring 2013. Bybee and Grimsley, drawn to New Orleans because of family connections and the Crescent City’s rich opera heritage, are relocating from Boston, where Bybee most recently served in the New England Conservatory’s Opera Studies program.
At Loyola, Bybee will teach studio voice in one-onone private lessons with students. “She takes young singers and turns them into opera stars—that’s her job, and she’s been doing it very well,” said Meg Frazier, associate professor of music and director of choral activities at Loyola. In the world of opera, stars are not simply made by raw talent alone, according to Ellen Frohnmayer, longtime Loyola opera professor. “Singing is passed down one to one—from a teacher to a student. You can’t learn it by a computer; you can’t learn it by a book. You learn it by being in the presence of a teacher. Luretta Bybee is that person. She walks in with all her brilliance, and something is passed down to the student that’s beyond words,” she said. “Loyola presents such opportunity for me. The students are open and eager and the faculty warm, welcoming, talented, and supportive,” Bybee said.

Between triumphant summer performances in Germany and Spain and other engagements this year in the U.S., including a return to the Metropolitan Opera and house debuts at Lyric Opera of Chicago and San Francisco Opera, tenor Bryan Hymel ‘01 comes home. The Loyola graduate, now enjoying an international career, will offer a masterclass Saturday, Oct. 18 from 1 – 3 p.m. in Roussel Hall. Hymel will share both vocal tips and career advice with selected Loyola students. Free and open to the public, this is an event not to be missed by opera lovers. Hymel will also star as Don José in the New Orleans Opera production of Carmen Oct. 10 and 12.

Peter Barnitz ’04 received his M.F.A. in sculpture and painting from the University of New Orleans in 2011. He established the Barnitz Academy of Fine Art, where he instructs art workshops for children and adults. He is a collective member of the TEN Gallery and works as the artist-in-residence at Kenner Discovery Health Sciences Academy.

Tasheka Arceneaux-Sutton ’02 is an educator, graphic designer, and image maker. She is an assistant professor of graphic design at Southeastern Louisiana University and faculty in the M.F.A. program of graphic design at Vermont College of Fine Arts. Her studio BlacVoice, produces work for small businesses and nonprofits and specializes in print and publication design.
WENDY GROSSMAN LECTURE | OCTOBER 16
Wendy A. Grossman is an art historian with expertise in the history of photography, early-20th-century European and American modernism, the intersections between non-Western and Western art, surrealism, and the artist Man Ray. As part of the Cornet Archives Lecture Series, this lecture will examine 20th-century American and European artists’ attitudes toward African art and look at the seminal 1923 exhibition of art from the Congo at the Brooklyn Museum of Art.

The university will ring in the holiday season with its annual Christmas at Loyola concert, a holiday tradition for more than 22 years. Free and open to the public, the Christmas musical showcase featuring the Loyola Chamber Orchestra, Loyola Chorale and Chamber Singers, and the Loyola Brass Ensemble takes place in Holy Name of Jesus Church on the university’s main campus. The festive evening also includes a Christmas carol audience sing-along.
LOYOLA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA DECEMBER 6 The Loyola Symphony Orchestra, boasting nearly 70 talented School of Music majors, presents full-scale orchestral works to the delight of audiences citywide. Directed by Jean Montès, D.M.A., this free, public concert features a special guest: Russian cellist Tanya Anisimova.

LOYOLA OPERA PRESENTS
Loyola Opera brings to the stage the popular double bill of Puccini’s Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi. Both hour-long masterpieces are from Il trittico, the composer’s cycle of three short works based on contrasting themes. Suor Angelica, centered on life in the convent, is the moving tale of a young nun who finds redemption for her tragic life at the very moment of death. Puccini lavished hauntingly beautiful music on his personal favorite of
the three operas. The comedy Gianni Schicchi features a title character who brilliantly manipulates a family squabbling over the estate of a deceased relative, as well one of the most famous of all operatic arias—“O mio babbino caro.” The performances will be sung in Italian, with projected English supertitles—a first for Loyola Opera. New York stage director Bill Fabris and Loyola’s Carol Rausch will lead the production.

Randy Newman has long been one of the most musically and lyrically ambitious singer-songwriters ever to be at play in the fields of popular music. Newman has been nominated for 20 Academy Awards, winning twice. He has scored various films since the 1980s, including seven Disney-Pixar films: Toy Story, A Bug’s Life, Toy Story 2, Monsters, Inc., Cars, Toy Story 3 and Monsters University.

This jazz guitarist, composer, and educator has long been regarded as one of the top jazz artists from New Orleans. He has twice been voted “Best Guitarist” and won “Best Contemporary Jazz Group” three times by Gambit and Offbeat magazines in their annual readers’ polls.
VALENTINA KOZLOVA INTERNATIONAL BALLET COMPETITION SEMIFINALS FEBRUARY 27 – MARCH 1
Celebrating the Loyola Ballet’s 50th anniversary in 2015, the university is hosting dancers for the Valentina Kozlova International Ballet Competition semifinals in Roussel Hall. For 50 years, the Loyola Ballet has continued its longstanding tradition in excellence in dance by offering its students opportunities to work with internationallyknown dance directors, choreographers, and worldrenowned dance teachers. Open to the public, the competition aims to bring highly trained and globally sourced young talent to the forefront and to create career, scholarship, and performance opportunities for dancers. Masterclasses and competitions will be held February 27 – 28 in Roussel Hall. The final competition will be held March 1. Please visit vkibc.org for event details.

Loyola and Temple Sinai in New Orleans are bringing to the stage a full orchestra and chorus in Mendelssohn’s epic retelling of the Old Testament story of the prophet Elijah. Along with Handel’s Messiah, Elijah is considered one of the greatest oratorios ever written. Loyola’s performance features an impressively large group of top-notch artists, including Alfred Walker, Luretta Bybee, Tyler Smith, Betsy Uschkrat, Cantor Joel Colman, Marcus St. Julien, the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra as well as the Loyola University Chorus and Chamber Singers, and Loyola conductor Meg Frazier, D.M.A.

This program, featuring Loyola professor Marcus St. Julien, will present a sampling of the wide variety of compositional styles Johann Sebastian Bach employed when writing for his favorite musical instrument, the pipe organ. It will also showcase the Æolian Skinner pipe organ of Rayne Memorial United Methodist Church, a musical instrument that epitomizes the American Classic Pipe Organ.

SENIOR ART EXHIBITS The Department of Art and Design will boast the works of 27 of its talented graduating bachelor of arts, graphic design, and bachelor of fine arts seniors during three new exhibits in April and May. The free opening receptions in April begin at 5 p.m. in the Collins C. Diboll Art Gallery, located on the fourth floor of the J. Edgar and Louise S. Monroe Library. The shows will remain on display through the month of May.

This annual program provides opportunities for non-beginner students in grades 7 – 12 to increase their skills, understanding, and appreciation of jazz. Students work closely with the Loyola Jazz Faculty for masterclasses, private lessons, improvisation, and combos and attend evening concerts featuring faculty and special guests.
