Some people would have us believe that video games are a violent and antisocial practice that encourage both wasteful spending and obesity. We’ll refer to those people as “haters” for the purposes of this article. However, video games have an ally that cannot be beat: science! So next time you encounter a video game hater, drop these science facts like a metaphorical microphone: •

Improved vision - A study showed that video gamers had a 58% improvement in differentiating between slightly different shades of color (contrast sensitivity).

Faster Decision making - Decision making is a tough balancing act between being fast and being accurate. A study revealed that action game players made decisions 25% faster with given tasks without losing accuracy.

Relieves Pain - Research has shown that patients suffering from pain were in significantly less pain while playing video games. The player becomes drawn into a world that requires a lot of their brain’s resources which limits their ability to process pain signals.

Socially Sound - A study done with children showed that moderate video game playing made them less hyperactive, and more in control of their emotions. Moreover, with larger multi-player games on the rise, it gives many gamers a common language.

ROAD TAX SEASON

This is when all vehicle owners must pay their respective vehicles taxes. While this point is important, it is imperative that you know your vehicle must be registered to this base and prefecture or adjacent prefecture by April 1, 2016. This simply means that if you were previously registered in Okinawa and you transferred to MCAS Iwakuni with a vehicle and never registered at Pass and Registration building 608, prior to April 1, 2016 you will be responsible for paying your taxes in Okinawa or another bases prefecture.

Signs will be posted at key locations throughout the base to remind you to pay your road tax. Prices may differ slightly from previous year but shouldn’t vary much from last year’s payment. If you are unsure of the previous amount paid please look at the documents used for vehicle registration, you should have the following: Title, Japanese Compulsory Insurance, Recycling Fee receipt (motorcycles will not have one), secondary car insurance and the Road Tax receipt which is usually a little white piece of paper about the size of a credit card that states “Automobile Tax Stamp” across the middle. These are the primary documents you will need when you go to Pass and Registration to validate payment and registration, along with the vehicle being registered. IF YOU HAVE LOST ANY OF THESE

COMMUNITY ARTICLE

Peaceful Picnics and Plenty of Play! by Phoenix Wilkins, Community Writer

In Japan, temples and museums might be first on your sightseeing list, but this country has so much more to offer. Why miss out on the non-touristy places that are just as fun? My husband and I do not have any children but somehow we always find ourselves at parks. We've discovered some amazing playgrounds, crazy slides and a few surprises! If there is anything Japan should be known for, it would be its playgrounds that are somehow made for both adult's and children’s enjoyment.

Momijidani Park, Iwakuni Kintai Bridge is a historical tourist spot with beautiful scenery, great festivals and delicious ice cream! Kikko Park is the area behind the bridge that makes up the majority of the park and hosts quite a few museums and gardens. However, my favorite area is Momijidani Park, (not to be confused with the park on Miyajima Island with the same name.) Located in the upper left corner next to the hiking trail to the castle, the area contains a pond and a gazebo. Dozens of trees bloom with color in the fall and provide ample shade in the summer. If you are looking for a quiet and calm spot to have a picnic while enjoying some amazing scenery, this is the place to go. Price: Free Access By: Bike or Car or Bus

Hachigamine Park, Waki I first visited Hachigamine Park in Waki in May for the annual Rose Festival. I came for the garden filled with roses, but was surprised to find so much more. If you are looking to spend a nice day outside with kids or friends, this park features something for all ages and interests. You’ll find a petting zoo, a ninja obstacle course, a Ferris Wheel, and an enormous slide which you take an elevator lift to get to! MCCS CHAT MCCS Chat is a program in which MCCS representatives visit various MCCS facilities to speak one-on-one with the community. These sessions offer the community the opportunity to get immediate answers to their MCCS questions. But more importantly, MCCS can get ideas and suggestions directly from the community that can help MCCS improve its programs and facilities.

Each month, we will include your questions here. We hope that you enjoy reading our responses and watching your suggestions take motion. Thank you for taking the time to chat with us and helping us continually improve!

Can the Marine Mart be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week? MCCS recently conducted a business study into the hours of operation for the Marine Marts and concluded that it was prudent to reduce the hours of operation from 117.5 hours per week to 105.5 hours per week. This 10% reduction in hours represented less than 1% of the business in the Marine Marts and is still well above the Marine Corps Order (MCO 1700.30) minimum of 70 hours per week.

I would like more barber availability on Sunday and Monday. In 2014, MCCS successfully negotiated new terms in the barber shop contract extending the hours of operation at both barber shops. Terms included opening both barber shops an hour earlier on Saturdays and Sundays, and close one hour later Monday through Friday. Both barber shops are fully staffed on Saturday and Sunday and have approximately 90% of their personnel working on Mondays. Mid 2016, Torii Pines Town Center will open with a barber shop offering ten chairs instead of the current six, and the North Side barber shop will be expanded to four chairs instead of three in 2017.

I would like more ethnic hair care products. The beauty salon will contact their product vendors to determine which products are available for sale and then present those options to customers to see which are the most popular. Once this is determined, the new product(s) will be ordered and stocked in Head to Toe Beauty Salon and MCX.

Can MCCS charge less money for Child Care? The cost for child care is established by the Department of Defense and issued by Headquarters Marine Corps as ranges based on current Total Family Income. Using these ranges, MCIPAC Commanding General establishes the rate that both Iwakuni and Okinawa charges for care. Families who have more than one child enrolled in child care receive a 10% discount for each additional child.

Can MCCS establish a babysitting service? Teenagers who are interested in becoming babysitters need to be initially certified by the Red Cross. Locally, the Red Cross offers this certification training and then places approved teens on a list that parents can obtain through the Resource and Referral Specialist at the CDC. Also, MCCS welcomes adults who are interested in becoming Family Child Care providers to inquire about the approval process through the Resource and Referral Specialist at the CDC. You Can Learn a Lot

of Things From

The Flowers

by Mikie Watanabe, Cultural Adaptation Specialist

Early spring, the cherry blossom season, is just around the corner! Appreciation of nature certainly has its place in Japanese aesthetics and ohanami is just one of them. It is the Japanese traditional custom of enjoying the transient beauty of flowers.

Life is short. In the Japanese culture, the brief blooming stage and simple beauty of the sakura are metaphorically compared to human life. It reminds us how human life is short and fragile but at the same time—beautiful. That’s why the Japanese embrace the blooming of sakura to the fullest! What is the meaning of o-hana-mi? O part is polite language (honorific prefixes), hana means flowers in Japanese, and mi comes from miru (viewing) verb Japanese kanji character. When we mention ohanami, it is almost always referring to cherry blossoms, or sakura, in Japanese. Japanese people have been enjoying ohanami since the 7th century. It used to be a yearly ritual reserved only for aristocrats. They wrote waka (poems) and enjoyed looking at the beautiful scenery. Japanese people have loved sakura over the years, but unfortunately the beauty of sakura is short-lived. The blossoms hang on the branches for a week, maybe two, if we’re lucky. If there is rain, the delicate sakura will fall off immediately.

MARCH 2016

19

The peak bloom period depends on the location and climate. In Okinawa, the season starts in January, while in Hokkaido it’s in early May. Weather forecasters report the movement of the sakura every day as it slowly moves from South to North. It is easy for us to know the timing of the blooming, so we could plan the ohanami party/picnic according to this information. Locally, we anticipate peak blooming to be the last week of March or first week of April. Many people in Japan enjoy eating, drinking, and singing with family, friends or coworkers beneath the sakura in full bloom. The sakura signal the end of winter and announces the arrival of spring. Japanese people cannot help being excited to see them in bloom! Coincidentally, April is also when a new school year starts and high school/college graduates start working. For many Japanese, the sakura is a symbol of a new stage in our lives. As we have so many sakura trees, viewing areas are everywhere in Japan. Local public parks, schools, temples, shrines, and castles are especially popular for ohanami. Every spring, many parks get crowded with viewers and street stalls. Sometimes people stay overnight at the park to get a good spot for ohanami. Restaurants and bento box shops prepare special ohanami bento that looks almost too gorgeous to eat! I recommend you to experience the fantastical nighttime ohanami experience called yozakura. In many sakura spots, temporary lanterns are hung to create an illuminated display which completely transforms the trees. It is both magical and romantic! Towards the end of ohanami, you can enjoy seeing the fluttering sakura petals in the wind. If it’s particularly gusty, you may witness a climactic blizzard of falling petals that the Japanese call sakura-fubuki.

There are over 600 kinds of sakura trees in Japan. Somei-yoshino (a light pinkish white hue) and yae-zakura (pink with many petals) are the most famous. Shidare-zakura, or a weeping Japanese cherry tree, is a splendid sight. Featuring around 300 sakura trees, this area in Iwakuni is well known as a spot for ohanami. You can even find sakura trees on base. The closest places you can enjoy ohanami are in the Kintai area and Nagayama koen/Park. Hiroshima Peace Park, Hiroshima castle and Miyajima are also famous spots. Cultural Adaptation Program would like you to share a new cultural experience and enjoy the beauty of Japanese flowers with them. We are offering an Ikebana class in March and a trip to Yamaguchi Flower Land where we will make miniature bonsai moss balls in May. Mikie Watanabe is the MCCS Cultural Adaptation Specialist. From greeting newcomers at the Welcome Aboard to hosting cultural trips and classes, her role is to help the Iwakuni community acclimate to Japanese culture.

Tips for developing pull-up strength It’s All in the Grip: The basic principles of a pull-up revolve around you being able to hold onto the bar. Without developing proper grip strength your pull-ups will be lacking. Try holding onto the pull-up bar as long as you can. Time your rest and repeat it several times. You’ll be surprised how hard it is.

Baby Steps: Think just attempting one over and over is the way you’ll learn? Wrong. Isolate each muscle group involved. Your core, lats (upper back), biceps, triceps and most of all your forearms.

Negatives: If you use a platform that is high enough to get your chin over the bar while standing you can easily grip the bar and lower down for 5-7 seconds until your arms are completely straight, rest and repeat. The eccentric (negative) phase of a pull-up is probably the best way to strengthen the fundamental muscles when attempting a pull-up.

Rock Climbing: This is probably the best alternative method in achieving overall body strength. It is a fun way to train and get strong, what could be better? Get some friends, hit IronWorks and have a blast. I guarantee you will be sore the next couple of days if you do.

BEYOND MOTIV It’s Within Your Reach by Sgt Michael A. Eckert, Marine, American Ninja Warrior, and Guiness World Record Holder

Are you feeling motivated?

If so, enjoy the short-lived feeling of potential success that you think will be the driving force behind your future endeavors. Why? Because it will not last long. Motivation is almost the same as luck. One day you will be on top of the world feeling like everything is going as planned. Then, in a flash, you can not even fathom how you found the strength or drive in the first place. Motivation is an illusion that can cause people to believe they are on the path to greatness. When motivation dwindles, they fall flat on their face and never move another inch. Discipline is one part confidence and one part strategy, which together are the path to your journey to the top.

P R E V I E W M A G A Z I N E | F I N D U S O N F A C E B O O K : M C C S I WA K U N I

COMMUNITY ARTICLE

IVATION My name is Michael Andrew Eckert. I am twenty-five years old and from Orlando Florida. I am a personal trainer, rock climber, American Ninja Warrior, a sergeant in the United States Marine Corps, and current world record holder for the most pull-ups in sixty seconds. I use a sole factor in my training which I would like to share in the hopes that whoever reads this gains an edge in achieving their goals. My view on motivation is that it is misleading. People tend to wake up in the morning, feel great and attack their goals head-on. What they don’t know is that they are going to burn out. When all the other momentary ingredients in your recipe for success have dissolved, discipline will keep you going. The key to becoming successful is molding your own unique form of discipline that is consistent and works for you. For some that may mean going to bed at a certain time to wake up early

the next day, or even setting up a proper diet. Whatever the case may be, it is different for everyone. Success does not happen overnight. It is not a sprint; it is a marathon. If you think it is easy, then forget it. Discipline is gauging how far away your goal is, and taking one step at a time. Most of all, you must be consistent and understand that you will not be able to control every factor. Things will go wrong on your journey but discipline will have your back every step of the way. The great Pyramids of Egypt started with one brick and now they are a “Wonder of the World”. What has worked for me, is to set my daily routine for a consistent time, day after day. The rest of your schedule should always work around the daily time that you've set aside to accomplish your goal. That time is your foundation and by achieving it daily, you will be setting yourself up for success. We are all unique. But the most successful people in the world all have one thing in common. They have developed and mastered their own unique form

of self discipline. Do not try to rely on short-lived factors like motivation.

Keep it simple, smart, &

consistent. Breaking my first world record is a great achievement but I will not let myself settle. I am currently working on breaking five more world records. Every day I set new challenges and continue to stay hungry for achievement as well as success. Remember,

hard work

and discipline

are all you need to achieve

your dreams.
