The Henderson Hall portion of Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall is located in Arlington, Virginia, directly across the Potomac River from the nation’s capital. We are on Southgate Road, situated on the southern border of Arlington National Cemetery. The Pentagon is less than a mile away. Built on land acquired through deeds and other actions between 1943 and 1952, Henderson Hall officially became U.S. government property on February 15, 1954, when the governor of Virginia executed a Deed of Cession of Political Jurisdiction. With the move of Headquarters Marine Corps to the Navy Annex in November 1941 and Marine Corps expansion following the outbreak of World War II, a Headquarters and Service Company was organized at Henderson Hall on March 1, 1942. With the addition of the Women Marine Company, units were consolidated under Headquarters Battalion on April 1, 1943, which led to the establishment of Henderson Hall in September 1943, primarily to billet the 2,568 Women Marines serving in the Washington D.C. area. During August 1946, a substantial number of Women Marines were released from active duty, making Henderson Hall barracks available for billeting male Marines. In 1950, the Korean War was heating up. Headquarters Battalion numbers swelled once again. Henderson Hall was a 23-acre city in miniature, with a chapel, post office, gas station, exchange, bowling alley, MARS radio station, firing range, sports fields, supply depot, three clubs, a hobby shop, a gym, and a swimming pool. The workweek was five-and-a-half days, with all enlisted companies carrying out a Saturday morning school and drill schedule. On February 16, 1955, then Commandant General Lemuel C. Shepherd, Jr. received the bell from the Navy transport ship USS Henderson, named for the 5th Commandant of the Marine Corps. The bell rests outside the Headquarters Building, beside “the” flagpole of the Marine Corps. Henderson Hall owes its name to Col (Brevet Brigadier General) Archibald Henderson, first commandant of the Marine Corps. Born on January 21, 1783, in Colchester, Virginia, he was appointed a second lieutenant 5

in the Marine Corps June 4, 1806, promoted to first lieutenant March 6, 1807, to captain April 1, 1811, and appointed major, by brevet, in 1814. As a captain during the War of 1812, Henderson participated in the engagements with the British warships HMS Cyane and HMS Levant on April 20, 1815. He received a silver medal and was included in the thanks of Congress to the officers and men of the USS Constitution for gallant service. He was later presented with a jeweled sword by the Commonwealth of Virginia. On October 17, 1820, at the age of 37, LtCol Henderson was appointed Commandant of the Marine Corps. He served in the position for more than 38 years—the longest of any officer to hold that position. During the 1836-37 war with the Seminole and Creek Indians in Georgia and Florida, in which the Marine Corps took an active part, Col Henderson, as commandant, went in person into the field with his command, sharing in the dangers and exposures of that campaign. For his services in checking Indian hostilities, he was advanced to the brevet rank of brigadier general. During the Mexican War, which was preceded by much military activity on the part of the Marine Corps during the years 1845-46 on the West Coast, Henderson administered the affairs of the Marine Corps. The success attained by the Corps during the war, including its expansion and development from a small fighting force into a well recognized and very formidable arm of the nation’s military forces, was due in no small measure to the leadership and ability of its commandant. In 1857, Marines were ordered at the request of the mayor of Washington, D.C., to suppress an armed mob of “hired roughs and bullies” who had been imported from Baltimore to take possession of the election booths. During the riot, when a cannon was put into position by a large crowd who threatened the Marines, Henderson deliberately placed his body against the muzzle, thereby preventing it from being aimed at the Marines, just at the moment when it was about to be discharged. LtCol Henderson passed away quietly on the afternoon of Jan. 6, 1859. His remains were interred in the Congressional Cemetery in southeast Washington, D.C. The Navy transport, the USS Henderson, was named in his memory. In October 2009, Henderson Hall, in compliance with the Base Realignment and Consolidation (BRAC) mandate, became part of Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall. The Headquarters & Service Battalion remains in a direct reporting chain to Headquarters Marine Corps.

MCCS serves the Headquarters & Service Battalion, Headquarters Marine Corps, Henderson Hall. The battalion provides administrative, operational, logistic, and quality of life services in support of over 2,000 Marines and civilians of Headquarters Marine Corps. Additionally, the battalion serves to support retired service members and family members who live in the National Capital Region. Some 450 Marines and civilians work “inside the wire” of the base, with the remainder assigned to the Pentagon, the Navy Yard, Fort Meade (Maryland), and other locations surrounding Washington, D.C. Personnel assigned to Henderson Hall work proudly to continue the spirit of Archibald Henderson, whose 39-year commandancy first gave the Marine Corps its renowned national and international reputation.

Area is fast-paced with a high cost of living. As a result, Marines and their families may experience stress related to new working environments, neighborhoods, schools, or post-deployment impact on relationships and family communication. Licensed mental health professionals are available to assist families, couples, and individuals with the stress associated with adjusting to their new environment. Relationship and interpersonal problems and other nonmedical concerns are addressed in short-term individual, marital, and family counseling; prevention and education workshops, including stress management, anger management, and couples communication. The program also includes crisis intervention, domestic abuse and child abuse intervention, victim advocacy, information on transitional compensation for victims of domestic violence, command briefings, and treatment groups to address issues related to spouse and child maltreatment. New Parent Support Program

The New Parent Support Program (NPSP) is a resource for parents with children up to five years old. Staff members are licensed mental health professionals who provide Home Visitation services, Nurturing Parenting and other parent education classes and developmental screenings for Marines and their families. Baby Boot Camp, a hands-on, oneday class for expectant parents in their third trimester, is offered monthly. “1-23 Magic,” a discipline program for parents of children 2 to 12, and a four-hour Cooperative Parenting workshop for separating and divorcing parents are offered regularly. (SACC) stresses the prevention of substance abuse/misuse. Operating on the premise that prevention is the key, SACC facilitates consistent adherence to the Commandant of the Marine Corps policy guidance, which states that because substance abuse/misuse undermines Marines’ performance and is contrary to the Marine Corps mission, it will not be tolerated. SACC seeks to facilitate a positive command climate along with promotion of unit activities that are conducive to a reduction in substance abuse and/or misuse related incidents. Key elements in this effort include edgy, multi-faceted prevention oriented training leading to timely intervention, referral and treatment. These efforts are supported by appropriate command-directed discipline, followed, ultimately, by restoration to full duty or separation from the service as appropriate. SACC provides prevention training, classes, SACO/UPC training and outreach, and such direct services as screenings, assessments, referrals, outpatient treatment, and aftercare. Family Care & Readiness Branch Exceptional Family Member Program The Exceptional Family

Member Program (EFMP) offers assistance to military family members with long-term health issues or special education needs before, during, and after relocation. The EFMP staff provides information on medical and educational resources, DoD EFMP enrollment, advocacy, local workshops, and support groups. School Liaison Programâ&#x20AC;&#x201A; The mission of the USMC School Liaison

Program is to identify and coordinate community resources to reduce the impact of the mobile military lifestyle on military school-age (K-12) children and families; to implement predictable support services that assist children/youth with relocations, life transitions, and achieving academic success; and to provide a wide range of resources that facilitate school transitions to parents, students, schools, commanders, and communities. Programs and services include education counseling, tuition assistance for active duty Marines, academic and military testing and information regarding the Joint Services Transcript ( JST) and Service Members Opportunity Colleges Marine Corps (SOC-MAR). Information and Referral Program The Information and Referral Program provides information and referral to resources in the military and civilian communities. Brochures, flyers, and guides are available on such topics as TRICARE (medical and dental), Military One Source, USO, active duty benefits, veterans’ benefits, commuting, food stamps, immigration, and more. Information and Referral has incorporated Relocation Assistance and information on child care. Personalized welcome aboard packages may be requested as well as information on schools, housing, Set-Aside Program, county and state resources, and military bases worldwide. A lending locker of household items is maintained for new arrivals awaiting household goods shipments. It has futons, pots and pans, dishes, silverware, irons and ironing board, coffee makers, alarm clocks and vacuum cleaners. These items are available to active duty Marines and their families. Transition & Family Member Employment Assistance Program Transition & Family Member Employment Assistance offers

support for transitioning service members and their families. Services include transition seminars, capstone screenings, career fairs, individual career counseling, skills assessment, Individual Transition Plan (ITP) development, résumé review, federal application process assistance, and a career resource library. Transition Readiness Seminars (TRS), administered by Personal & Professional Development Branch staff and the U.S.

Department of Labor, provide information on benefits and entitlements available upon separation / retirement from active military service and all matters relevant to employment readiness for transitioning service members and their spouses. NEX Uniform Center

The NEX Uniform Center is open in the MCX, with a large assortment of uniforms and Navy Pride items. A tailor is on site weekdays. Dry cleaning service is available: clothing left Tuesday before 11:30 AM will be returned Thursday at 11:30 AM; clothing left Thursday by 11:30 AM will be returned Tuesday 11:30 AM. Car Wash

A self-service car wash is open 24/7, 365 days a year. The car wash has two bays—one covered and one uncovered with steps to reach the tops of SUVs, vans and trucks. The car wash is coin-operated and takes quarters only; a machine to change bills to quarters is on site. The car wash has three vacuum cleaners and several vending machines with assorted cleaning accessories.

Named in memory of Cpl Terry L. Smith, the gym has everything you need for a great workout, including basketball and volleyball court, workout rooms, weight room, racquetball courts, High Intensity Tactical Training (HITT), ERSON HA ND exercise room, and men’s and women’s locker rooms. The Single Marine Program (SMP) offers a wide variety of day and weekend recreation trips, along with volunteer events that foster a positive relationship between the community and Single Marines. Past events have included cruises to the Caribbean, dinner and a movie at the pool, and volunteering with local community organizations. Most importantly, the Single Marine Program provides a forum for Marines to address quality of life Issues that need to be heard and resolved by the chain of command. The pool, named in memory of Maj Douglas A. Zembiec, maintains year-round operations, closing to transition between summer and winter swimming seasons, when a vinyl dome covers the structure. The pool offers classes in AMP-IT for active duty service members. Follow the pool on Facebook to keep up with winter water temperature, status, and events. Cpl Terry L. Smith Gymnasium

The gymnasium is named in memory of Cpl Terry L. Smith. Cpl Smith was posthumously awarded the Silver Star for gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a radio operator with Company M, Third Battalion, Twenty-sixth Marines, Third Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force in the Republic of Vietnam. On 20 February 1968, on Hill 8818 near Khe Sahn, Cpl Smith observed a Marine helicopter landing in a zone on which he knew North Vietnamese army gunners had registered heavy mortars. He realized that the aircraft would almost certainly be destroyed if it remained in the landing zone and attempted unsuccessfully to contact the pilot by radio. Aware that the enemy rounds were probably already on the way, he restrained a Marine junior to him from going out onto the zone, and, leaving the safety of his bunker, ran across the open ground signaling manually to the helicopter crew to take off immediately. As the helicopter took off and before Cpl Smith could reach cover, he was fatally wounded by mortar fragments, gallantly sacrificing his life so that the crew might live. By his extraordinary courage in the face of overwhelming odds, his uncommon concern for others, and his self-sacrificing efforts, Cpl Smith reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. 2017 Guide to MCCS Henderson Hall

Zembiec Pool

The aquatics facility is named in memory of Maj Douglas A. Zembiec. Maj Zembiec was posthumously awarded the Silver Star for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving as a Marine advisor, Iraq Assistance Group, Multi-national Corps, Iraq, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom on 11 May 2007. Attacking from concealed and fortified positions, an enemy force engaged Maj Zembiecâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s assault team, firing crew-served automatic weapons and various small arms. He boldly moved forward and immediately directed the bulk of his assault team to take cover. Under withering enemy fire, Maj Zembiec remained in an exposed, but tactically critical, position in order to provide

leadership and direct effective suppressive fire on the enemy combatant positions with his assault team’s machine gun. In doing so, he received the brunt the enemy’s fire, was struck and succumbed to his wounds. Emboldened by his actions, his team and supporting assault force aggressively engaged the enemy combatants. Maj Zembiec’s quick thinking and timely action to re-orient his team’s machine gun enabled the remaining members of his unit to rapidly and accurately engage the primary source of the enemy’s fire, saving the lives of his comrades. By his bold initiative, undaunted courage, and complete dedication to duty, Maj Zembiec reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.

The former enlisted Marine barracks were named in honor of Lance Corporal Miguel Keith, who received the Congressional Medal of Honor for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving as machine gunner with Combined Action Platoon 1-3-2, III Marine Amphibious Force, operating in Quang Ngai province, Republic of Vietnam. During the early morning 8 May 1970, Lance Corporal Keith was seriously wounded when his platoon was subjected to a heavy ground attack by a greatly outnumbering enemy force. Despite his painful wounds, he ran across the fire-swept terrain to check the security of vital defense positions, and then, while completely exposed to view, proceeded to deliver a hail of devastating machine gun fire against the enemy. Determined to stop five of the enemy approaching the command post, he rushed forward, firing as he advanced. He succeeded in disposing of three of the attackers and in dispersing the remaining two. At this point, a grenade detonated near Lance Corporal Keith, knocking him to the ground and inflicting further severe wounds. Fighting pain and weakness from loss of blood, he again braved the concentrated hostile fire to charge an estimated twenty-five enemy soldiers who were massing to attack. The vigor of his assault and his well-placed fire eliminated four of the enemy while the remainder fled for cover. During this valiant effort, he was mortally wounded by an enemy soldier. By his courageous and inspiring performance in the face of almost overwhelming odds, Lance Corporal Keith contributed in large measure to the success of his platoon in routing a numerically superior enemy force, and upheld the finest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.
