Ray and Nancy Rizzo Fund Marissa Darcangelo, Stazach Ferguson, Trent Karalfa, Noah Maslo, Jyelle Miller

The Ray and Nancy Rizzo Fund is a “donor advised fund” established through the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies.This fund supports financially eligible students with tuition assistance through a named scholarship.Ray and Nancy Rizzo believe not only that education is empowerment but also that the future of Johnstown is in the promise of today’s youth.

Endowment Funds The following is a list of endowment funds that provide tuition assistance for Bishop McCort Catholic High School students.

Helen Akers Memorial Scholarship Cole Smith, Mary Smith

Helen Akers was a devoted housekeeper for Msgr. Thomas Cawley, the first principal at Johnstown Catholic High School. He held that position until 1951. Miss Akers left a large portion of her estate to Bishop McCort High School in memory of Msgr. Cawley. Miss Akers did not attend JCHS but knew about its good works through her family and Msgr. Cawley. In consultation with her brother, Richard Akers, a 1935 graduate, it was agreed to make a bequest to Bishop McCort. Richard Akers said, “Helen had a deep devotion to her faith and her gift will be a perpetual reminder of that devotion.”

Bishop McCort Class of 1964 Scholarship Ethan Metzgar This scholarship fund was created through many generous donations from the members of the Class of 1964 participating in their 50th Reunion activities and from a “matching grant” from an anonymous donor. The class chose to create an endowment fund to provide an everlasting sign of dedication to their alma mater and desire to help students receive the same superior education they received.

Bishop McCort Catholic High School Class of 1966 Scholarship Alexander Duncan, Kasey Miljenovich On the occasion of their 50th reunion, members of the BMCHS Class of 1966 wanted to leave a lasting memorial to the friendships formed, great memories created and valuable education received. With current BMCHS tuition being so much greater than the education they received at no cost, the Class of 1966 recognized the financial burden that many students and their families face when they want to enroll at Bishop McCort. To provide students with the same advantage of a Catholic education that they received, the Class of 1966 chose to create an endowment fund to make that possible and continue in perpetuity. Class members were so generous that two scholarships were able to be awarded before their reunion year was over.

David R. and Violet M. Bunk Scholarship Allyana Stephens Benjamin Franklin once said, "Investing in education pays the highest interest."

With that quote in mind, and in honor of their 50th Wedding Anniversary, David and Violet are proud to initiate a perpetual endowment fund for deserving Bishop McCort Catholic High School students.

Acknowledging the grace and blessing that God has bestowed on them throughout their life together, they feel it would be an honor to aid students and their families in pursuing a quality education infaith-based Catholic environment. hope and desire is that this scholarship will enable future generations the motivation and life skills to live a life worthy of our calling in Jesus Christ.

Reverend Richard D. Clark Scholarship Madeleine Oliveros This fund was established at the legacy request of Reverend Richard D. Clark. Reverend Clark passed away November 14, 2006. He was one of Bishop McCort’s most loyal supporters. Rev. Clark graduated from Johnstown Catholic in 1947, was a Korean War Veteran and was a priest for 43 years. His family includes over 100 nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews, fiftyfour of which graduated from Bishop McCort High School. As his legacy, Rev. Clark wished to help families of Bishop McCort students in need of financial assistance.

John F. Curley and Leonor Cortes Curley Scholarship Hugh Grant Jeanjaquet, Kelsey Way, Kiersten Way John and Leonor Curley hold their years spent at Johnstown Catholic as some of the best of their lives. Both graduated with honors in 1941. Both John and Leonor were great believers in education. With this scholarship, the Curley family wishes to thank the many priests, sisters, lay teachers, and coaches at BMHS for their dedication to all students.

Carl A. Dirsch and Catherine Dirsch Scholarship Madison Sedlemeyer Carl A. Dirsch and Catherine Dirsch were a brother and sister who had a strong relationship with Johnstown Catholic High School. Carl was fortunate enough to be a 1934 graduate of Catholic High and Catherine was always a big fan. Carl attributed his financial savvy to his education on Osborne Street. Coming from the Franklin section of Johnstown, both Carl and Catherine were proud of their background. Catherine was a retired teacher from the Franklin school district. Carl helped fund the renovation of the fourth floor of the Osborne Street building. It is the utmost tribute that these two individuals posthumously award scholarships to deserving students to pass on the torch of learning.

Tom and Linda Fleming Scholarship Darius Hinton Thomas P. Fleming, Jr. is proud to be the current Principal and Chief Administrative Officer of Bishop McCort Catholic High School. Tom and his wife, Linda, are Catholics by birth and Crushers by choice. They recognize the value of a Catholic education to develop a student's mind, body, and soul. As lifelong residents of Johnstown, the Flemings established this endowment to give back to the community they love. The fund will assist deserving students to receive a quality education at Bishop McCort.

Jeffrey W. Gaspar Memorial Scholarship Emily Ream Jeffrey W. Gaspar started a named scholarship years ago to honor his parents. Now we wish to create an endowment fund to carry on his memory. Jeffrey, class of 1979 at BMHS, had a lifetime of treasured classmates. He attended every class reunion and led the classmates in every verse of their Alma Mater. His love of his alma mater was intense. Most students sing these lyrics, graduate, and move on; but, Jeffrey sang and lived this special creed. He participated and financially supported all athletics and academics at McCort. He went on to his career as an administrator of an oncology-hematology clinic on Long Island, NY. Jeff was the essence of Jesus Christ’s message to help others learn the value of character, morality, self-discipline, and

love of one another. So Pal of Mine, Dear Catholic High School, I’ll Never Forget You. Jeffrey went to meet his creator on March 21, 2016.

William E. and Leona L. George Scholarship Alexis Martin This living scholarship was established in memory of William and Leona George who placed a high value on education and religion. They believe it is essential in life to have a useful combination of the two. Bill, a 1945 graduate of JCHS, was able to graduate from college at the age of twenty and pursue a successful career in the nuclear energy field and Leona graduated from a business college in the Midwest. Their education enabled them to travel through the USA, Canada and Hawaii and also live in Canada for two years at which time they observed firsthand the benefits of a good education and strong religious beliefs. Bill and Leona believe that a good, disciplinary education obtained at BMCHS will be a key to succeed in the world we live in today.

Both believe it is fitting and proper to give back and aid students at the same institutions they were exposed to in their formative years. They hope and pray that this gift will aid a deserving student in obtaining a solid education which should help them to pursue their lifetime goals. Bill is thankful to all the religious personnel who tutored him during his four years at the then JCHS.

Mary Jo Clark Helsel Scholarship Alec Lovejoy Mary Jo Clark Helsel’s daughter and son-in-law, Gail and George Derhofer, established this scholarship in 1998. Mary Jo graduated from the former JCHS in 1933. The Derhofers decided to create an educational endowment to provide scholarship money to young women at BMHS. This scholarship is meant to pay tribute to Mary Jo and the lifelong commitment she has made to her family, the Johnstown community and Bishop McCort.

Paul Hollern Memorial Scholarship Rylee Russell The family, friends and former students of Paul Hollern funded this endowment scholarship to honor a McCort teaching legend and father figure. Paul Hollern taught social studies at Bishop McCort Catholic High School for 43 years before he passed away on December 25, 2008. Mr. Hollern also served as athletic director, coach and archivist of the school’s sports records and alumni achievements. He represented everything that is good about being true to God, proud of your country and hometown, devoted to your family, dedicated to Bishop McCort Catholic High School and loyal to your friends.

James F. Horner Scholarship Alexander Brisko James F. Horner, a graduate of the class of 1964, wishes to help students of today’s generation attain the same solid, quality Catholic education he did when he attended Bishop McCort. With this endowment, Mr. Horner is ensuring access to a McCort education for many years to come.

Johnstown Catholic Class of 1960 Scholarship Ashley Gacka The members of the 1960 graduating class of Johnstown Catholic created a scholarship fund to provide an everlasting sign of their dedication to their alma mater and desire to help students receive the same superior education they received. This scholarship was created through many generous donations from the members of the class of 1960 participating in the 50th Reunion Class Challenge. The fund provides assistance to students entering or continuing to attend Bishop McCort Catholic High School.

Johnstown Catholic Class of 1961 Scholarship Jacob Czerak The Catholic High Class of 1961 created this scholarship in response to the “50th Reunion Class Challenge.” It is with Crusher pride and red and gold joy that the Class of 1961 gives this scholarship to a current McCort student.

Edward T. Kelly, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Zoe Irving This scholarship fund was established through a generous distribution from Edward T. Kelly’s estate. Mr. Kelly requested his gift be used in perpetuity to assist Bishop McCort students who

are unable to afford a Catholic education.

Sister Donna Marie Leiden, S.C. Scholarship Megan Hutton Friends of Sister Donna Marie created this fund to commemorate her leadership and dedication to the ministry of Catholic education. Sister Donna Marie Leiden served nine years as principal at Bishop McCort High School (1997-2006). Sister Donna Marie, a Sister of Charity of Seton Hill, Greensburg, PA, was the tenth principal of Bishop McCort High School. While at Bishop McCort, Sister Donna Marie established endowments to assist students with tuition costs, created scholarship programs and supervised major renovations to Bishop McCort’s auditorium and gymnasium. Bishop McCort High School prospered under her leadership and dedication to the ministry of Catholic education.

Anthony, Irene and Kitty Lorditch Memorial Scholarship Angelina Petro In 2006, Kitty (Lorditch) Gallagher created a scholarship in honor of her parents through the Named Scholarship Program at Bishop McCort. Kitty annually supported this fund and was proud to support her alma mater by helping students in need of financial assistance. Sadly, Kitty passed away in July 2009. In her obituary, Kitty requested contributions be made to support her parents’ scholarship fund at Bishop McCort. The tremendous response from family, friends and business associates was enough to create a perpetual endowment fund. Kitty Lorditch was a tireless advocate for those in need throughout her career. From her first position at Chicago’s Cook County Hospital working on behalf of the mentally challenged and destitute, through her time battling for the rights of migrant laborers in Pennsylvania’s Department of Community Affairs, to her final position as the leader of a coalition striving to provide quality, affordable health care of both large and small companies, she worked in earnest to live out Jesus’ message in Matthew 25, “whatever you did for one of the least brothers of mine, you did for me.” This endowment honors Kitty and her parents, Anthony and Irene Lorditch, who believed strongly that

a quality Catholic education makes a difference not only in the lives of students but also in the lives of everyone those students influence in their futures.

Jim Lynch Scholarship Hayden Jeffreys, Jacob Majercsik, Amir Ortega-Andrews, Darius Shaw Jim Lynch, Johnstown Catholic class of 1955, decided that he wanted to give something back to his alma mater. He experienced many financial challenges in order to attend Catholic High.

Overcoming these challenges, Jim has since achieved great success in his business endeavors. He credits his Catholic education as one of the reasons. Jim Lynch has given a generous contribution that will benefit many Bishop McCort students in the future.

Joseph Martella Scholarship Austin Golby, Joseph Staib, Nathan Staib Joe Martella was a well-respected Johnstown businessman, husband, father and friend. When Mr. Martella passed away in 2001, donations in his memory were directed to Bishop McCort High School to honor his legacy. He was a devoted supporter of BMHSits athletic programs. A 1953 JCHS graduate, Joe went on to become a pharmacist and businessman in the area.education was at the highest priority for JoeJanice Martella.Their 6 children all are graduates of BMHS.Joe's legacy continues through the Martella family's ongoing sponsorship and support of youth athletic programsthe Johnstown areasurrounding communities.

Joseph and RebeccaScholarship Fund (Presented by family members) Alonzo Favor, Anthony George This fund was initiated by McAneny family members for the guidance that was given to them by their parents. Joseph and Rebecca placed a high value on education and religion. They believed in a Catholic education and their family is pleased to establish this scholarship to assist students at Bishop McCort Catholic High School.

Bernie McGuire Scholarship Devin Boxler, Collin Crocco, Hannah Rietscha

This fund was established by Mrs. Ruth (Skelly) Shaw, Johnstown Catholic Class of 1949, in memory of her cousin, Bernie McGuire. Mrs. Shaw wants to honor Bernie McGuire for his successes at Johnstown Catholic High School and for the good life he led until his passing in 1984. Bernie McGuire graduated from JCHS in 1948. He was a student-athlete who excelled in football and basketball while attending Johnstown Catholic. Bernie McGuire passed away at the age of 54. He was survived by his wife Rose and four children, Michael, Patrick, Mary and John.

The scholarship fund recognizes Bernie’s good nature and charitable spirit. Bernie was always available to assist those in need. He demonstrated these beliefs in his personal and professional life.

Frank and Sylvia Pasquerilla Scholarship Jacob Ardary, Keara Brandon, Hans Esteban The late Frank and Sylvia Pasquerilla were known throughout the Johnstown community and beyond for their numerous acts of philanthropy, and their generosity has been felt for many years at Bishop McCort. The Pasquerilla family continues to give, in hopes of helping students and families receive the gift of a Catholic education. This scholarship is meant to honor two generous benefactors with a gift that keeps on giving.

Michael Patcher, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Jesse Plowchin This fund was established by donations and proceeds from an Invitational Basketball Tournament held in Michael Patcher, Jr.’s honor at Bishop McCort High School. “Patch” as he was affectionately known, left us at an all-too-early age but will long be remembered as one of the greatest Crushers of them all. He began his basketball career by leading St. Joseph's School to the PA State Parochial Basketball Championship. In the 1965-66 season, Patcher led the BMHS

Crimson Crushers to the PCIAA State Championship. He was also a three-year starter at the University of Pittsburgh where he led the Panthers in rebounding for two consecutive seasons.

Steve Petro Scholarship Tara Vatavuk Steve Petro was one of the first athletes to receive a scholarship from the Johnstown area. He started as a lineman at Johnstown High School. He played for the Brooklyn Dodgers of the National Professional Football League in 1940 and 1941. In 1950, following service in World War II, Petro returned to the University of Pittsburgh to join the football staff. During the next 50 years, he served as a coach and administrator. In 1975, he was inducted into the Cambria County Sports Hall of Fame. Known as a letterman of distinction, his loyalty, dedication and respect earned him the title, “Ambassador of good will for the athletic department of the University of Pittsburgh.” An inspiration to his five children and fourteen grandchildren, Steve Petro has left a legacy that will be remembered and passed on for generations to come. This scholarship recognizes his commitment to his family, friends and the Johnstown community.

Dr. John R. Quinn Scholarship Paige Grove Dr. John R. Quinn passed away on October 21, 2014 encircled by his family in love. His life epitomized the routine encouragement he gave his children and others – “be sure to grab the brass ring.” From carpenter’s apprentice, to pre-law student, to World War II Navy Medical Corpsman, to University and then Medical School Graduate, then esteemed family physician, Anesthesiologist, Medical Director and Educator, he had many accomplishments. “Pursue goals with persistence” was a repeated mantra to his family and friends as well as “Recognize opportunity in adversity.” “Can’t” was not in his vocabulary, and he struck it from those around him. “No” was not an answer he’d take easily; “Where there’s a will there’s a way” was behind his drive and determination which stirred inspiration in others to succeed in light of his “I think you can…I believe in you” spirit. Dr. Quinn and his wife, Evelyn, made Catholic education a priority in their lives and the lives of their children. As an educator himself in the realm of medicine, Dr. Quinn had a longstanding reputation as a mentor who helped individuals to realize their full potential, advocating lifelong education, often expressing “to teach is to learn.” Because of hisfaith and belief that education provides a strong foundationa successful life, this endowment is established so that future generations of students may receive similar blessings.

Charles and Isabel Sadosky Scholarship Cole Allison, Haley Cannada

The Charles and Isabel Sadosky Scholarship Fund was established to express gratitude to BMCHS for positive contributions to their lives.Charles and Isabel have been long-standing fans and supporters of Catholic schools. The Sadosky family further expresses its gratitude and appreciation for the priests, sisters, teachers, and administrators who have selflessly dedicated their efforts to provide children with a quality education.Because of theirfaith and belief that BMCHS provided a strong foundationfor the successful lives of their children, they established this fund so that future generations of students may receive similar blessings.

Gene Schultz Scholarship Luke Romajas In 2004 Bishop McCort lost longtime faculty member, coach and friend, Gene Schultz. Mr. Schultz taught a variety of science and health courses for 40 years at Bishop McCort. He was associated with every one of Bishop McCort’s principals during his time as student, teacher and coach. Mr. Schultz was head baseball coach from 1967 to 1993 and a football coach for 40 years.

He coached every one of McCort’s five professional football players. Coach Schultz’s commitment to McCort athletics was uncompromising and has been an inspiration to decades of McCort athletes. Donations in memory of Gene Schultz enabled the creation of this special scholarship fund.

Bobby Schutte Memorial Scholarship Zane Dudinack This scholarship fund was established in memory of 2000 alumnus, Robert Schutte, Jr. Contributions to this scholarship fund are received from outright donations and proceeds from the annual Bobby Schutte Memorial Golf Tournament. Bobby is best remembered for his great smile and charitable spirit that were always available to assist fellow classmates in their time of need.

Dave Seidel Memorial Scholarship Ryan Flowers Dave Seidel, BMHS class of 1982, devoted more than two decades to students in the parochial league and at Bishop McCort. Dave coached football and girls’ track at Bishop McCort and he was a Physical Education teacher, coach and loyal volunteer at Our Mother of Sorrows. On August 21, 2009, Dave Seidel passed away after a seven-year battle with cancer. His legacy will live on through this scholarship fund established to provide assistance to students attending Bishop McCort High School and Our Mother of Sorrows School. Dave always tried to encourage the students he taught and coached to expect the best from themselves and to live every day to its fullest.

Joseph Shumock Scholarship Jackson Dobbs

“We don’t make excuses, we don’t accept excuses, we work hard and do our best.” These words echoed throughout the JCHS locker room from 1960-1963 when Joseph Shumock coached the Crimson Crusher football team. During his tenure as coach, Joe Shumock is credited with creating the longest undefeated streak in JCHS/BMHS football history. In addition to coaching, Coach Shumock was also a faculty member at BMHS. This scholarship fund was established as a tribute to his leadership and commitment to youth. Appreciative players and students, fellow coaches and friends contributed to create this scholarship fund.

S. Samuel Signorino Scholarship Nevan Napotnik This scholarship was created through many generous donations from the family, friends and former students of Mr. S. Samuel Signorino. This fund celebrates the many lives “Mr. S” touched through his dedication to Bishop McCort High School and the local music community. This fund will serve as a lasting tribute to his 44 years of service to Bishop McCort High School.

John Paul Skelly Scholarship Olyvia Casciotti, Emily Euen, Sara Rovansek Mrs. Ruth (Skelly) Shaw, Johnstown Catholic Class of 1949, established this fund in memory of her loving brother, John Paul Skelly. Mr. Skelly passed away on April 8, 2007. John Paul Skelly was described as a kind, sensitive and caring person by all who knew him. Mrs. Shaw feels a scholarship fund is a fitting tribute to her brother’s memory. John Paul Skelly graduated from Johnstown Catholic High School in 1956.

Robert Donald Skelly Scholarship Riley Hearn Mrs. Ruth (Skelly) Shaw, Johnstown Catholic Class of 1949, established this fund in memory of her loving brother, Robert Donald Skelly. Mr. Skelly passed away on January 30, 2013. Mrs. Shaw feels a scholarship fund is a fitting tribute to her brother’s memory. Robert Donald Skelly graduated from Johnstown Catholic High School in 1952.

William Tomaskovich Scholarship Tressa Mack This scholarship was established by Slovenian Savings & Loan Association to honor Bill, a 1969 graduate, on his retirement after forty-four years of service. We hope this scholarship will help

give a deserving student the opportunity to receive a quality education.

Abbey M. Zalud Scholarship Justin Edmiston Abby Zalud was a very generous benefactor to her alma mater. She was a member of the Johnstown Catholic Class of 1936 and generously gave her financial support with a legacy so that others could be afforded the same educational opportunities she was given.

Named Scholarship Funds The following is a list of named scholarship funds that provide tuition assistance for Bishop McCort Catholic High School students.

Altoona-Johnstown Catholic School Teachers Association Scholarship Isaac Thornton The lay teachers from the three diocesan high schools through their union, the AJCSTA, established this scholarship. The scholarship, which is supported by the service fees of nonmembers and voluntary contributions of members of the association, began in 1986 as the Lay Faculty Scholarship program. This program provided financial aid to many students in the three high schools. In 2002 the Association decided to change this program to a Named Scholarship.

Nick and Donna Antonazzo Family Scholarship Helena Sroka Nick (1955) and Donna (Nicoletti) (1956) both graduated from Catholic High School. Three of their children– Louise Ann, Anna Marie and Nicole also graduated from Catholic High School as well as Nick’s sister, Sister Dorothy Antonazzo, who is a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph.

Nick, a former member of the Board of Trustees of Bishop McCort, was Chairman of the Building Committee for the Bach Wellness Center. In gratitude to the school and its teachers, Nick and Donna have donated this scholarship to be used for the students.

Louis R. and Catherine Aust Family Scholarship Leah Gruss, Kaleigh Plank, Bailey Shriver The Louis R. and Catherine Aust Family Scholarship was created to honor parents who were dedicated to giving their eight children a solid Catholic education. By the grace of God, personal sacrifice and the help of many family members and friends they were able to make it happen.

This family scholarship is in thanksgiving for their love and the many blessings the Aust children received because of their education at Bishop McCort High School.

Timothy & Rebecca Babik Family Scholarship Rebecca Ribblett, Elijah Sakmar Timothy and Rebecca (Nitch) both attended Catholic grade school (Timothy at St. Stephen’s School and Rebecca at St. Andrew’s School) and were proud graduates of the Bishop McCort class of 1970. After high school they both went on to earn college educations and Master Degrees. Timothy worked for many years as an accountant and passed away in 2005. His memory lives on through his family. Rebecca has been a dedicated speech teacher for nearly 40 years. She educates preschool-aged children and works tirelessly to teach today’s youth how to speak properly. She also is a dedicated volunteer at her Church and is a teacher in the RCIA program. Timothy and Rebecca always stressed the value of a good education, hard work and living by God’s design. It is their children’s pleasure to honor them through this scholarship. It is a small thank you for being devoted and loving parents. This scholarship was created by Christopher and Daniel Babik to honor their parents who were committed to raising their sons as Catholic gentleman, providing a good home, and ensuring they received a quality education.

The hope of Christopher and Daniel is that this scholarship will assist students who otherwise may not have been able to attend Bishop McCort, have the opportunity to receive a quality Catholic education and allow them to achieve their goals after high school.

Michael Babyak Scholarship Sophia Kuzmyak Michael Babyak created this scholarship so a deserving student could receive the same quality education he received. Mr. Babyak graduated from Johnstown Catholic High School in 1962 and wants to financially help students with their Bishop McCort education.

Martha Rybar Banda Scholastic Scholarship

Josh Beblar Martha Rybar Banda graduated from JCHS in 1951. After teaching elementary education for 30 years, Mrs. Banda held various political positions for the City of Johnstown including Deputy Mayor. She was the first Democratic woman on Johnstown City Council. She is the proud mother of three daughters. This scholarship was created in gratitude to her parents, teaching sisters, and supportive priests who by example and hard work enabled her to live her life firmly grounded spiritually and educationally.

Barbara Ruth Boxler and James Boxler Scholarship Charles Tomljanovic Barbara Ruth Boxler graduated from JCHS in 1948. She and her husband Jim were the epitome of a truly happy Catholic family. They were involved in many activities at St. Benedict Parish in Geistown. They provided transportation to Sunday Mass for the handicapped and both of them were Eucharistic Ministers. They also unselfishly cared for their aging parents. Jim and Barbara died in a head-on collision while traveling to Ohio to help an ailing aunt for whom they were her sole health care providers. Because of their commitment to serving others, Barbara’s brother Paul felt they would want others to be helped in receiving the discipline of a good Catholic education.

Denis M. Brett Memorial Scholarship Ethan Romajas Denis Brett was editor of the school JCHS newspaper before graduating in 1962.He attended college in Connecticut then was drafted during the Vietnam conflict.His working years began with a position overseas.He resided in California with his wife and four children. This scholarship was created in memory of Mr. Brett by his proud godmother, Kathleen Placko.

Betty Lee and John W. Burkhard Scholarship Melissa Murin, Emily Pollino Betty Lee and John Burkhard created this scholarship so a deserving student could receive the same faith-filled education that John received. Mr. Burkhard graduated from Johnstown Catholic High School in 1944. Both Betty Lee and John want to help students with their Bishop McCort education.

Patrick Dempsey, Jared McIntosh Edward Burkhard, Jr., Johnstown Catholic class of 1951, decided to create this scholarship to honor his mother and father. Edward’s parents were always enthusiastic about the value of an education and they endured personal sacrifice to ensure he received a good education. He is certain they would be delighted to see other students receive this same opportunity.

Caring Friends Scholarship Cordell Lewis The Caring Friends Scholarship was created to help Bishop McCort High School students and their families in obtaining a quality education. The Caring Friends are a group of women committed to keeping BMHS viable well into the future.

Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court of Our Lady #647 Scholarship Emma Michlena The Catholic Daughters of the Americas is one of the oldest and largest organizations of Catholic women in the Americas. Catholic Daughters of the Americas strives to embrace the principle of faith working through love in the promotion of justice, equality, and the advancement of human rights and human dignity for all. With our motto of “Unity and Charity”, Court of Our Lady #647 wishes to support practicing Catholic female students at Bishop McCort Catholic High School.

Very Rev. James F. Crookston Scholarship Zachary King The Very Rev. James F. Crookston, D. Ed., class of 1963, scholarship honors a priest who works tirelessly for Catholic education in the Johnstown area. Father Crookston is currently pastor of St. John Gualbert Cathedral and is a proud former principal of Bishop McCort High School.

During his principalship in the 1980s, the school implemented extensive updates in academics, technology, and energy-saving physical plant improvements. When Father Crookston was principal, his Volkswagon Rabbit was parked outside the then boiler room entrance to the building 20 out of 24 hours a day.

Daniel J. and Rosemary B. Crossen Scholarship Anna Edmiston

Danny Crossen and Rosie Burkhard graduated from JCHS in 1929. After graduating from college, Rosie from Seton Hill College and Danny from Pitt, they married in 1936. They lived in Johnstown their entire lives with Rosie assuming a career as a mother and a teacher in the Johnstown and Westmont school systems. Danny was with Bethlehem Steel Corporation for 35 years and was very involved in local civic activities serving as commissioner of the Johnstown Recreation Association and Mayor of Westmont. Their four years at JCHS were a formative and meaningful period in their lives. It is a privilege to honor them, through this scholarship, in their roles as loving and caring parents.

Margaret Curley Skalek and Geraldine Curley Scholarship Tessia Robison Peg and Gerry graduated from Johnstown Catholic High School in the class of 1939. Both attributed their successes in life to the education they received at Catholic High. Gerry died in 2013 and Peg in 2015. They wanted their legacy to be in the education of our future leaders.

Louise Antonazzo Davanzo Scholarship Aaron Koval This scholarship is for a deserving student who desires to study the Arts. As a graduate from BMHS and because of the quality of education I received, I would like to help a student achieve and experience the same quality education as I did. I am very grateful to the teachers and school.

The John DeFazio Scholarship for Drive and Initiative Presented by Jason Horner ‘98 Aidan Layton Jason Horner, class of 1998, established this scholarship to honor the dedication, humility and tenacious spirit of Mr. John DeFazio. Not only is “Mr. D” a standout educator but also he is a celebrity in the McCort sports world, most notably as a “Voice of the Crushers” and as a baseball coach. Jason Horner credits the BMHS faculty and coaches, and especially Mr. D, for always demonstrating the power of faith, discipline, perseverance and the pursuit of excellence. This scholarship is Jason’s thank you note to one of the most pivotal teachers in his life—Mr. John DeFazio.

Thomas F. and Michele Deter Scholarship

Christian Grandinetti Thomas (‘82) and Michele Deter established this scholarship as an opportunity for deserving students to benefit from a quality educational experience. Bishop McCort High School’s balanced approach to academics, religion, ethics, morals, athletics, and community service produces multi-faceted young adults enabled to achieve their place in the world. McCort graduates are easily recognized in community roles and in their professional accomplishments as they pursue their goals. The Deters perceive this scholarship as their opportunity to give back for the lifetime benefits they have received from BMCHS. Their hope is that the students to whom the scholarship is awarded will appreciate the privileges of their education and will make a genuine difference in the world. Hopefully, their future successes will enable them to provide the same opportunity to deserving students in the future.

William Deter '53 and Roberta "Bertie" (Balazik) Deter '55 Scholarship Mikayla Martin Thomas (‘82) and Michele Deter established this scholarship to honor parents William (‘53) and Roberta (‘55) for their commitment to Catholic education and Bishop McCort. Deter was instrumental with organizing and operating the parochial basketball and football leagues for over 25 years. still attends as many sporting events as he can. was a teacher at Visitation BVM School and then at St. Benedict School for 31 years. parents, they sacrificed to send four children to Visitation BVM School and then to Bishop McCort High School because they believed in the benefits a Catholic education provides. Their dedication and support of Bishop McCort High School and Catholic education serves as a great example of giving back to the system that served them, their children and grandchildren.

John J. and Mary Jane (Link) Dougherty Scholarship Alexis Edwards John and Mary Jane (Link) Dougherty are the parents of 9 children, 6 of them graduated from BMHS. John and Mary Jane’s families came to the area because of jobs, climate and countryside that reminded them of their homeland that they left.John Dougherty’s family is fifth generation Cambriaafter having emigrated from County Donegal Ireland. Mary Jane Link is the first generation of her family to be born in the U.S. after her family emigrated from Austria and Slovenia.(Mary Jane’s grandmother’s family migrated to Brazil to work in the coffee fields for 10 years to raise the funds to come to the USA in 1920.)John and Mary Jane both grew up inand met at a dance at age 15.They celebrated their 60 th wedding anniversary on October 3, 2013.Both John and Mary Jane graduated from Johnstown High School in the early 1950s.John worked for Bethlehem Steel in the Franklin Open Hearth for over 32 years; Mary Jane was a stay-at-home mom and then pursued and attained adegree after 11 years.The Catholic faith and education played a very big part in the Dougherty family.John and Mary Jane Dougherty, as you can imagine, went without so their children would have the necessities in life including an education. and Dad, we are grateful for your sacrifices.

Piatak Dressel Scholarship Annah Lovette Irene Piatak Dressel created this scholarship so students would benefit by receiving the same Catholic teachings that she received. Mrs. Piatak Dressel graduated from JCHS in 1945.

Mary Ann (Erlinger) and Julie Ann Luther Scholarship Victoria Wissinger This scholarship was established in 2017, the 40th Anniversary of the 1977 Johnstown Flood.

Judith A. (Erlinger) Strittmatter thought the scholarship would be a good way to honor her sister and niece who died in the flood. Mary Ann was a 1958 graduate and loved Johnstown Catholic High School Her classmates have not forgotten her at their reunions. Judy, a graduate of the class of ‘63, along with her mom, Rita (Kirchner) Erlinger, ‘34, felt it “only fitting that the Erlinger family help others to enjoy a Bishop McCort experience.”

Dr. George J. Frem Scholarship Cole Edwards, Rachel Nagy Savannah Price, Lauren Selfridge, Myra Weber This scholarship was established in loving memory of Dr. Frem’s aunt, Mrs. Alice J. Resha, who was influential and helpful in achieving his educational goals.

Patricia Morgret Fyock Scholarship Gabrielle Slagel Pat Morgret Fyock graduated from Johnstown Catholic High School class of 1956. Pat created this scholarship so a deserving student would receive an excellent Catholic education. This Catholic education will provide the foundation of their future success.

Fred Garbinski Family Scholarship Dylan Crocco, Arianna Hinton Mercedes Menzie, Matthew Montanti, Jada Wolf

Fred and Judie (Jacko) Garbinski know all about the Bishop McCort tradition. The two were members of the Class of 1961, and Fred was a part of the 1960 state basketball championship team. The Garbinskis understand the importance of a Catholic education and have been faithful supporters of McCort over the years. They feel it is important to give something back and help current students receive the same educational opportunities they received.

James Gaus Memorial Scholarship Caleb Herdman This scholarship was established with a memorable friendship in mind. Paul Ruth remembers his fellow JCHS 1945 alumnus and Navy shipmate, James Gaus, as a selfless and supportive friend.

James Gaus passed away in 1979. Paul wishes to honor his friend by helping students receive a quality Catholic education.

Msgr. Linford F. Greinader Memorial Scholarship Jordan Page This scholarship was established by Keith Barto (‘94) to honor Msgr. Greinader, the parish priest at Our Mother of Sorrows where he attended grade school. Keith’s family was not Catholic, but the Msgr. worked with his parents to make it affordable for Keith and his three sisters to attend the full 8 years at OMOS. When Keith wanted to continue his education with his colleagues from OMOS, the Msgr. arranged for him to have the same rate as the Catholic students from OMOS. Keith was able to attend and graduated in 1994. He paid for high school by working various jobs and says that “Msgr.’s only ask was for me to volunteer at OMOS every Sunday to count the treasury with Sr. Honora.” It was not until Msgr. Greinader passed away that Keith found out

that the Msgr. had been paying the difference with his own personal money. Keith established this scholarship to “continue Msgr.’s legacy of education and giving.”

Louis and Marcia Guzzi Scholarship Isabella Hunt Lou and Marcia were proud members of the Class of 1955.Lou and Marcia had a great marriage that served as a great example of love, tenacity and teamwork.was tragically killed in December, 2000 in a car accident.Many remember that sad day. Lou's legacy lives in his kids, his wife and in the jobs and careers he created with his business success that have provided many Johnstown families with long-term economic security.Lou and Marcia made a bet on this community and its people in building their lives and their businesses.and Marcia always lookedhelp give people help so they could help themselves and this scholarship is an example of their philanthropy.Marcia worked for many years as a nurse and also was at Lou's side as he developed and started his many businesses.Marcia is still active in helping the area's youth and has had the joy of eight grandchildren, all of whom are educated in the Catholic tradition including three here at McCort.continues to make his mark through the example and charity of his beloved Marcia.

Joseph and Helen Hart Memorial Scholarship Na’Cienna Taylor This scholarship was created in memory of Joseph and Helen Hart who put a high priority on education and made many sacrifices to send their three daughters to Catholic school.

James F. Horner Scholarship Zachary Coleman, Sarah Sorchilla James F. Horner, a graduate of the class of 1964, wishes to help students of today’s generation attain the same solid Catholic, quality education as he did.

The Hummel family (Dan, Vanessa and Bryan) are proud supporters of Bishop McCort Catholic High School. “We believe that the true value of a private, Catholic education is paramount to a vibrant community, and it is our wish to be able to assist students financially who want to attend this great Catholic high school and work towards achieving academic excellence. JCHS Class of 1956 Scholarship Hailey Jeanjaquet The members of the JCHS Class of 1956 created this scholarship in order to keep the flame of Catholic education flourishing. The JCHS Class of 1956 realizes that, in part, the future of the Catholic church is the student body of Bishop McCort.

JCHS Class of 1959 Scholarship Mikayla Duranko In honor of their 50th reunion, the class of 1959 established a named scholarship. The class wants to assist students who wish to enroll at the school or to continue attending Bishop McCort High School. The class of 1959 deeply appreciates their Catholic high school education and they want more of today’s youth to have the same wonderful experience.

Robert J. Jones Memorial Scholarship Jacob Horwath, Julia Horwath This scholarship fund was established in memory of Bob Jones, JCHS Class of 1962, who always

held a special place in his heart for his alma mater, and all the good friends and memories he shared there. It seemed fitting, upon his passing, that family and friends give back, in a small way, to the school he loved.

Rose and Andrew Kasprzyk Memorial Scholarship Lorenzo Favor, Rahsan Gibson This scholarship was created by Donald Kasprzyk to honor his mother and father who were members of St. Andrew’s Church from its founding until their respective deaths in 1999 and 1986.

Andrew, a steelworker and Rose, a housewife, sacrificed to fund Don’s education He wishes to assist a similar family with this scholarship.

Louis F. Kitsko, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Colin Stevens Dennis Kitsko created this scholarship to remember his brother Louis and his life accomplishments as a good father, hard worker and respected community member. He was active in his community by being involved in youth baseball. He was also active in the church choir. Louis was business manager of Penn Cambria School District. He brought dramatic changes to the fiscal stability of the Penn Cambria School District. He is missed by all whom he touched.

Frank and Ann Kmec Memorial Scholarship Evan Barzensky, Madison Buxton, Nicholas Roberts This scholarship was established by John Kmec (class of 1964) in memory of his parents.His parents grew up in the early 1900s and neither went beyond a grade school education.Frank worked for Bethlehem Steel and Ann was a homemaker.Both parents believed in the value of a good education as one of the keys for success. And they sacrificed much so their two sons, John and Bob (class of 1967), could have that education at Bishop McCort and later college.John Kmec wishes that this scholarship helps other students achieve their dreams.

Coach William “Doc” Kory Scholar-Athlete Scholarship Nathan Conrad William Kory was the head freshman football coach at Bishop McCort H.S. for 24 years (19892012). His teams compiled a record of 163 wins, 32 losses and 3 ties and eight of the teams went undefeated. Over 500 McCort student-athletes were coached by Dr. Kory and some became his

students at UPJ, where he teaches geography and is the head of that Department. He values the friendships developed over the years at the school and will avidly follow Crusher football in the future. Both his son and daughter are graduates of Bishop McCort High School.

Robert D. Krizner Scholarship Adriana Strohm During the time my husband, Robert D. Krizner, was a patient of Dr. Frem’s, the two developed a good patient/doctor relationship.When my husband died, friends and relatives contributed to The Kidney Center.Dr. Frem, in turn, knowing of our mutual support of Catholic education, donated these funds in memory of my husband, establishing the Robert D. Krizner Scholarship.

L’Education en Vogue’s Unification Scholarship Honoring “Mads” Bryce Bair In 2016, while Divine Mercy Catholic Academy was being established at 25 Osborne Street, the seniors of Bishop McCort Catholic High school’s L’Education en Vogue were busy preparing a grand welcoming for their younger counterparts—a Unification Festival. L’Education en Vogue is a club through which high school students, who recognize the value of education, raise money to support the schooling of destitute children locally, nationally and internationally. On the surface, the festival, which included games, food and music, was a symbol of community between the two schools; however, it also had a second, more practical purpose. In keeping with the club’s primary mission, the festival was used to raise funds and establish a scholarship for incoming students at Bishop McCort Catholic High School, thus providing them with the gift of education. The project was planned and executed by the Bishop McCort Class of 2017 with invaluable oversight, assistance, and wisdom from Ms. Maloney-Pears, the founder and faculty leader of L’Education en Vogue.

Maravalli Family Scholarship Autumn Wolfe Dr. Camille and Dorothy Maravalli have been friends of Bishop McCort for a number of years.

Their continued support has given students who otherwise may not have been able to attend McCort the opportunity to do so.

Leo G. and Agnes Markferding Scholarship Adam Papcunik This scholarship is to enable a worthy student the means for a quality Catholic education. Robert Markferding, member of the class of 1947, wishes to honor his parents with this scholarship.

Helen and Ronald McCormick Memorial Scholarship Colby France, Jenna Stofko To honor her mother and father, 1951 alumna Barbara McCormick established this scholarship.

Barbara’s parents not only provided her brother and her with the love and security every child needs, they also ensured their children had the discipline of a good Catholic education.

Martha F. (Lloyd) and William G. McGovern Scholarship Dayne Boxler Martha F. (Lloyd) McGovern was in the second class of Johnstown Catholic High School, graduating in 1927.was the Salutatorian of her class, receiving top honors in math and English.was the last living member of her class when she died at age 91 in 2002.teacher and lifelong learner, she and her husband William were devoted to each other, their families, and their Catholic faith.The scholarship is in honor of the 100th anniversary of their births.

Nancy (Gyukery) Meacham Scholarship Morgan Lenzi This scholarship was established in loving memory of Nancy Gyukery Meacham (Class of 1956) by her husband, Edward. Nancy’s dedication to the Catholic Church and to teaching was strengthened during her years at Johnstown Catholic High School. Edward wanted to provide a student with the opportunity to achieve his or her high school education in a Christian

atmosphere.

Gertrude Mowery-Karr Scholarship Lydia Sorchilla This fund was established in loving memory of Gertrude Koenig (Class of 1935) Mowery-Karr.

Bishop McCort High School had always held a special place in Gertrude’s heart. She was an enthusiastic supporter of all the programs at JCHS/BMHS, especially the football, basketball, band, and soccer programs. Many, many times before she passed away in July 2015, she spoke about the value of the excellent Catholic education she, her eight children and two grandsons received at JCHS/BMHS and how it helped them become responsible, caring, successful people.

Due to the generosity of her friends and family, this scholarship is being established to assist others in getting the same invaluable Catholic education.

Jack and Carole Murphy Scholarship J'Mir Howling Jack and Carole Murphy sacrificed greatly to send their children to Bishop McCort because they recognized the importance of a quality education based on a foundation of Christian faith. Jack passed away in 1985 and Carole continues to provide her support to BMCHS as her grandchildren attend and graduate. This scholarship is in thanks for their unconditional support and love. It also is meant to help other parents who have talented and promising children, but who may find themselves financially constrained to support that potential. If one deserving child benefits from this scholarship, then we have honored the memory of our Dad and the continuing legacy of our Mom.

Marianne Newcomer Scholarship Ally Diamond This scholarship has been created to honor the 20 th anniversary of Marianne Newcomer as an employee at Bishop McCort Catholic High School. Mrs. Newcomer began her career at the business office of BMCHS in 1991. She obtained the opportunity to join the McCort staff to further enable her three children a chance to receive a quality Catholic education. This scholarship has been created by her son Tom, a 1993 graduate of McCort and a former member of the BMCHS varsity football staff, and his wife Heather, who currently is a faculty member in the physical education department at BMCHS. Their hope is that the recipient of this award will be given the opportunity to foster their leadership, academic, and athletic abilities as a student at BMCHS.

Bob and Joan Ondick Scholarship Bethany Grove Bob Ondick (Catholic High Class of 1955) and his wife, Joan, are proud that their two children Bob and Lori, are McCort graduates. The Ondicks want to assist students in achieving the goal of a Bishop McCort Catholic High School education.

Indira J. Patel Memorial Scholarship Fund Ketul J. Patel and Dane K. Patel Alaina Zasadni Ketul and Dane Patel have established this scholarship fund in memory of Indira J. Patel, beloved mother and grandmother.

Indira was a strong advocate for education for Indian women. Born and raised in Kenya, Indira was a pioneer traveling to England to pursue studies in nursing in the 1960s, an uncommon feat for Indian women of her generation. Upon completion of her studies, Indira returned to Kenya where she and her husband of 49 years, Dr. Jagdish D. Patel practiced medicine, often traveling to remote parts of Kenya to provide care for those most in need. In 1979, Indira, her husband, and

two young sons moved to Johnstown, Pennsylvania where she and her family resided for 35 years. With a deep commitment to the importance of providing her children with a strong education, both of her sons, Dr. Himanshu J. Patel and Ketul J. Patel graduated from Bishop McCort High School in 1985 and 1988.

Indira is fondly remembered by her love and commitment to her family and her continuous pursuit to keep learning. This scholarship fund recognizes Indira’s passion for education and specifically her passion to provide access to education for young women.

Bill and Mary Grace Pavlick Scholar-Athlete Scholarship Enora Pakstis, Samuel Salas Bill and Mary Grace (Frick) Pavlick graduated from Johnstown Catholic High School in 1945.

Bill was an outstanding student-athlete. Their four children and two daughters-in-law graduated from Bishop McCort High School. All were good students, some achieved athletic prowess, and all have succeeded in life with much credit due to the educational start they received at Bishop McCort. Several nephews and nieces of Bill and Mary Grace, likewise, excelled in academics and athletics at JCHS/BMHS and can attribute their success to the outstanding education they received in high school. Over the years Bill and Mary Grace have been staunch supporters of their alma mater.

This scholarship is established as a tribute to their commitment to JCHS/BMHS, as a thank you from those who have benefited from their high school education, and as a means to help perpetuate the fine tradition of academic and athletic excellence at BMHS.

Francis and Betty Petro Scholarship Katherine Isenberg This scholarship has been created by their daughter, Catherine Petro Barnes, ’77 and her husband, Douglas R. Barnes, in honor of her parents, Francis and Betty Petro. The scholarship honors Mr. and Mrs. Petro’s dedication to their children and to recognize the personal sacrifices they endured to make a Catholic education available to all four of their children: Catherine, Frank Petro, ’79, Steve Petro, ’82 and Maria Petro Sanders, ’88. Because of their parents, all of the Petro children value the importance of a Catholic education and have given their own children the precious gift of a Catholic education as well.

Michael and Josephine Piatak Memorial Scholarship Benjamin Johnson The Michael and Josephine (Class of 1945) Piatak Memorial Scholarship honors two devout Catholics who realized the blessings of faith and education. They were the proud parents of two McCort grads—Mary Clare Piatak (Class of 1974) who has spent her entire teaching career at BMCHS, and Theresa Piatak (Class of 1977).

Otto and Vera Respet Scholarship Victoria Delich, Thomas Dull, Addison King

Otto and Vera Respet’s lives represented what is best about our Western Pennsylvania values— hard work, determination, self-sufficiency, and caring for others. At the height of the Great Depression, both Otto and Vera had to leave school at the age of 13 to work to support their families and most especially their younger siblings.Vera worked as a cleaning lady and Otto as a coal miner.However, they led lives that were full and rich as they educated their three daughters —Marcia and Patti as nurses and Jeanne as a school teacher.did this through hard work, sacrifice, and a positive outlook to the future.never turned their back when they saw somebody in need and lived quiet lives imbued with these great values that made us all better. They loved Catholic education.All three of their daughters and several of their grandchildren and great grandchildren have received Catholic educations including six here at McCort.This scholarship is in their memory and to give a hand to help others achieve a great Catholic education and start life with a solid foundation of a McCort education.

In memory of Donald J. Roach/Nancy Roach-Gurdak Academic/Athletic Scholarship Madison Rozich Nancy Roach-Gurdak wanted to create a scholarship to honor her father’s volunteer work at Bishop McCort. Don had and his daughter has a great love of athletics and they volunteered their time in such pursuits. Nancy was McCort Class Valedictorian as well as the recipient of the Scholar-Athlete Award. This is evidence that pinnacles in both athletics and academics can be reached. By creating this scholarship, Ms. Roach-Gurdak also wanted to assist youth in acquiring a good education.

St. Andrew’s Knights of Columbus Council #11308 Scholarship Katelyn Ferrante The Knights of Columbus was formed in 1882 by a young priest named Michael J. McGivney in New Haven, Connecticut. The Order was founded as a fraternal benefit society to provide financial aid to its members while offering fellowship among Catholic men based on family, faith, and friendship. Every day, Knights and their families experience the importance of charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism. The K of C has grown into a fraternal order with more than 1.7 million members located in over 13,000 councils throughout the world. Each year members of the organization donate more that 64 million volunteer hours and over $140 million to charitable and church causes. Every K of C council provides a wide variety of opportunities, projects, and activities for members and their families in which to get involved. They benefit not only the Church but also the community as a whole, especially those less fortunate. The St. Andrew’s Knights of Columbus Council supports many Catholic organizations including St. Andrew’s Church and Grade School and Mom’s House. They have approximately 105 members and are a

very active council with numerous fundraisers and social activities. Some fundraisers include: the Fall turkey raffle, monthly pull tab drawings, and football ticket sweepstakes, among others.

Some social activities include the summer family picnic, Christmas party and annual Pirate baseball trip. The Council believes that Catholic education is a pillar of the Catholic Church.

They believe that every student should have the opportunity to attend Catholic school if they so choose. The Council started this scholarship to help at least one student afford the cost of tuition and receive a quality Catholic education. It is their hope that the student will go on to pursue higher education after high school and to live their life in God’s image.

Jennifer Kula Salatka Scholarship Levi Allison, Brendon Bair, Mayer Bassilly Jennifer Kula Salatka established this scholarship to help those who desire a Catholic secondary education. A 1966 alumna, Mrs. Salatka has been a very generous supporter of her alma mater for many years.

Denny Sedei Memorial Scholarship Rachel Boschele Denny Sedei and his wife, Kathy (Miller), were 1974 graduates of BMHS. Their three children, Chris ‘97, Dennis ‘98 and Nicole ’07, all McCort graduates, have gone onto very successful collegiate and professional careers. Coach Denny passed away on January 29, 2010 and is sadly missed by the entire McCort community. Denny successfully coached and was an integral part of the McCort boys’ and girls’ soccer program for many years. Coach Sedei led his Lady Crushers to win three consecutive Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference Championships and two District VI Championships. Not only did Coach Sedei teach the girls’ soccer athletes how to be gracious victors, but also he provided mentoring for them on and off the field. Denny’s family and many friends wish to honor his memory with this scholarship.

In memory of Patricia (Klesch) Seitz ’56 Scholarship Isabella Gaborek Both Patricia (Pat) and her husband James attended JCHS and enjoyed their high school years.

Pat passed away in 2005 from a terrible neurological disease. Jim wants this memorial scholarship to provide assistance and allow others to enjoy their same wonderful high school experience. It is in loving memory of his wife.

Rick and Sue Seitz Academic Incentive Scholarship Alexis Dimond-Smith Sue and I benefitted greatly and in many ways from our McCort experience (most notably the opportunity to meet each other.) McCort prepared us for life after high school, and we made life long friends. We want to help students have those same life changing opportunities that we had from 1971 to 1975.

The Howdy Sherman/Shorty Maher Scholarship Kylie Kadas, Evan Yost These two gentlemen represent the hundreds of volunteers whose efforts enabled thousands of young athletes to compete in the Johnstown Catholic Association’s elementary and high school athletic programs. Their dedication gave the Catholic youth of Johnstown the opportunity to perform their sport on the hardwood or on the gridiron. Regardless of the degree of success that we athletes attained, we are indebted to these two men and their fellow volunteers for giving us this treasured athletic experience.

John Skubak, Jr. Scholarship Caitlin Crocco, Justin Mickens Bernard Skubak created this scholarship to honor his brother who has dedicated his career to Catholic education. John Skubak, Jr. retired from the position of Principal of Our Mother of Sorrows school in 2002. Both brothers are graduates of BMHS. With this scholarship, Bernard Skubak wishes to help students receive the Catholic education he and his brother received.

Slezak Family Scholarship Michael Hanik, Anna Stofko This scholarship is in memory of Edward J. and Martha B. (Pollack), class of 1941 and in honor of their children who are all graduates of BMHS: William, class of 1965; Mary Anne, class of 1969; Thomas, class of 1971; John, class of 1975; and Joseph, class of 1979. The foundation for one’s life is found in the education he/she receive in their formative years. To help ensure that foundation remains solid and intact, the Slezak family proudly establishes this scholarship. In addition, we would like to honor our uncle, the late Rev. Anthony J. Pollack, class of 1946, who taught at BMHS from 1963 to 1973.

Ann Harris Smith Memorial Scholarship Matthew Trabold Ann Harris Smith was an outstanding Catholic woman who was a wonderful teacher, wife, mother and friend. Ann and her husband Michael have two children who both attended BMHS. Ann passed away in July 2002 of ovarian cancer. She was 53 years old. Mike Smith established this scholarship in memory of his wife. Mike said, “Ann was a passionate woman in all she did and was truly a role model to all who touched her.”

Matt Smith and Molly Morris Scholarship Abbey Miljenovich This scholarship was established by Matt Smith, graduate in 1992 and Molly Morris, graduate in 1994.Its creation is because of the foundation that a Bishop McCort experience provides in a young man or woman’s life.We want this scholarship to assist in providing this opportunity to a student whose parent or caregiver/provider is challenged to afford the tuition due to an affliction or death from cancer.

Joseph and Bessie Sweeney Memorial Scholarship Reagan McClurkin This scholarship is funded by the descendants of Joseph and Bessie Sweeney to honor the memory of our father, mother, grandparents, and great-grandparents. Joseph Sweeney tragically passed away in 1944, leaving Bessie to raise seven of their 13 children. All of the children attended Our Lady of Mercy School and five children attended Johnstown Catholic High School.

Several grandchildren and great-grandchildren have attended Bishop McCort High School.

Bessie, a convert to the Catholic faith, was very active in Our Lady of Mercy Parish and school, and continued to support her childrens’ Catholic education even though widowed. We, their family, would like to honor them by awarding this scholarship to a Bishop McCort student being raised by a widowed mother.

Audrey Tercek Memorial Scholarship Megan McKee This scholarship was created in Audrey’s memory because she was a devout Catholic and will eventually have four grandchildren graduating from BMHS!

Van D. & Kathleen P. Thomas Memorial Scholarship Sierra Widmar Throughout their adult life, Van and Kathleen Thomas were strong proponents of Catholic education. Their love for Bishop McCort can visibly be seen in the state-of-the-art Thomas Conference Room, a project which they underwrote in 2012. And now, this scholarship will continue in their memory so that area children can reap the benefits of a strong Catholic education.

Felicia Toth Scholarship William Dodson, Emmalee Dull,Abigail Instone, Amy Kralik, Kole Lichtenfels Felicia Toth, a graduate of Bishop McCort and Saint Francis University, established this scholarship in 2017 in honor of her late husband, Michael Toth. He was supportive of her continuing education off-campus at SFU, and in her career as an Internal Revenue Agent with the U.S. Treasury.

Joseph “Casey” and Stella Urban Scholarship Corian Long This scholarship was established by Joseph Urban ‘62 to honor his parents, Joseph “Casey” ’36 and Stella Urban, for their unwavering faith in God and their love for each other and for their selfless commitment to their family.

Andrew M. Voytas Memorial Scholarship Amari Andrews, Emily Sauro Andrew Voytas believed education is the best way for an individual to achieve growth and help others. His daughter, Vanessa, created this scholarship to pay tribute to her father’s strong belief in Catholic education and to help more students attend Bishop McCort.

Dr. John P. Walker Scholarship Nicole Altschuh, Meghan Moyer Dr. John Walker graduated from Bishop McCort Catholic High School in 1984. He began to coach cheerleading as an assistant to his mother in 1987 and is now currently the director of the Bishop McCort Cheerleading program. As a result of his 25-year commitment to Bishop McCort, this scholarship was established in his honor by former cheerleaders, cheerleading families, friends, coaches, local businesses, and his own family.

In Memory of former JCHS Band Director Walter W. Werzyn, Sr. Scholarship Tyler Schmidtetter Mr. Werzyn was the band director at the former Johnstown Catholic High School. Mr. Werzyn was instrumental in developing the JCHS Junior Catholic Band. Its members were students from the local parochial schools. Eventually, most of these students became members of the high school band.

Yingling Family Commitment to Catholic Education Scholarship Trenton Boltz, Mason Nash This scholarship was established by Kenneth and Susan Yingling to assist families who have multiple children concurrently enrolled at Bishop McCort Catholic High School. Kenneth, a 1980 McCort graduate, and wife Susan believe strongly in the value of a quality Catholic education. From 2006 to 2009 Kenneth and Susan had four daughters graduate from Bishop

McCort. It is with deep gratitude for their outstanding Catholic education that this gift is made.

Therefore, this scholarship wishes to honor the faculty, staff, parents, and students who have made and continue to make the commitment to Catholic education.

Dr. Donato and Mrs. Nancy Zucco Family Fund Hailee Janidlo Dr. and Mrs. Zucco believe helping young people get a sound education is fundamental to their success and happiness. Bishop McCort invites a well-rounded learning environment to assist and support individuals to meet their goals and dreams.

Pennsylvania Educational Tax Credits The Pennsylvania Educational and Opportunity Tax Credit programs provide a way for the business community to be directly involved in education. Each year, the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) sets aside millions of dollars in tax credits to allow businesses to direct their tax dollars to organizations like Bishop McCort Catholic High School.

These tax dollars not only make a difference to our students and their families, but also provide a business with a dollar for dollar reduction of actual taxes owed. Businesses can change the lives of students by reallocating tax dollars to our local Catholic school community.
