2020 Labyrinth Little Rock Central High

Labyrinth 2020 Clearly, 2020 didn’t end the way any of us expected. The Labyrinth staff had just begun creating pages for this year’s magazine when COVID-19 changed all our lives. Fortunately, we had chosen the writing, art, and photography pieces that would go into the magazine, and I thought it was important to get these students’ creative efforts out into the world, where they could be shared, as they should be. Our kids are so incredibly talented, and they deserve to have their efforts seen, enjoyed, treasured. We all want more days off, to get things done at home, to sleep in, to catch up on Netflix, but I’ve learned, as I think many of us have, to be careful what I wish for. When it really hit me that we would not be returning, and I wouldn’t be seeing my staff or any of my seniors again this year, I sat down and had a good cry, frankly. This spring of masks and social distancing, of outdoor visits and Zoom dinners, is something that we hope we will not see the likes of again in our lives. One hopes, though, that we will not forget the ways in which this pandemic has perhaps, at least a little, made us see some things differently, and perhaps from this COVID Spring will burst blooms of creativity, of photographing and drawing and writing about our experiences. And then perhaps we can share those snippets of our hearts with one another, which is, I think, what creating is all about. The first piece of art you will see is “A Brief Inquiry” by Emmy Weaver. The staff had chosen this piece to be the cover art for this year’s issue, so it is the piece that will usher you in. The first piece of writing here is a piece by senior and staff member India Stephens about the class of 2020. It seemed fitting, in light of current circumstances, to allow this piece to start the writing off. I am grateful to the 2019-2020 staff for sharing themselves with me and with one another through their writing this year in class. I was always amazed at the ways and in the degree to which they supported and rooted for each other when we shared in class. It was a privilege to be invited into their hearts and minds for seven and a half months. Thank you, Sharolyn Jones-Taylor
