Locals often quip that Alaska has four seasons just like anywhere else, only they’re June, July, August and winter. Formidably dark and snow-laden during the winter months, an entirely different aspect of America’s largest state is revealed from May to September. Choose a June or July voyage, and you may witness the phenomenon of the midnight sun — or, at the very least, enjoy extended twilight that imbues the night sky with an ethereal glow. For those wishing to explore Alaska’s picturesque landscapes, this near-endless supply of daylight presents a magical backdrop for adventure with longer days and scenes infused with an astonishing vibrancy.
During summertime, nature – often dormant or in survival mode during the harsh winters – bursts forth with a renewed tenacity and vigour. Bears fish for salmon as they weave their way upriver to spawn, humpback whales patrol the waters, feeding voraciously to build themselves up for their lengthy winter migration and moose, caribou and wolves roam the vast wilderness, as bald eagles soar overhead.
Prepare yourself for panoramas unlike any you’ve ever seen. Glacier-cut mountains, vast National Parks, cascading waterfalls and atmospheric fjords all vie for your attention. And whether you’re relaxing on your balcony on Seven Seas Explorer® or exploring the local towns, attractions and wilderness, there’s a sense that Alaska can still provide the final frontier - from the frenetic pace of the modern world.
With Unlimited Shore Excursions a signature part of The Most Inclusive Luxury Experience® from Regent, immersing yourself in the spiritual Indigenous cultures, scenery and ways of life is wonderfully easy. From following trails once trekked by 19th-century gold prospectors to watching Ketchikan’s axe-wielding lumberjacks test their skills at a lumberjack show or scanning Spasski River Valley for grizzly bears, deer and otters, there are myriad exhilarating excursions to choose from. You could even find yourself paddling a native canoe through the unspoiled waters of Mendenhall Lake, visiting a sledge-dog camp or cycling through a temperate rainforest.
Enhance your luxurious cruise experience with the iconic Rocky Mountaineer® rail journey that offers a unique and unforgettable trip through the Canadian Rockies. On this journey, you’ll witness breathtaking views that are exclusive to this mode of travel, including the legendary Spiral Tunnels, the Continental Divide, and stunning mountain passes and canyons.
Enjoy all this from the comfort of a bi-level, glass-dome coach in GoldLeaf® Service, and indulge in sumptuous, regionally inspired cuisine.
This journey is available from May, right through the warm summer months to September, when you can witness the autumnal transformation of the forests and the mountains becoming blanketed in the first snow of the season — named ‘termination dust’ by the locals.
Experience the luxurious GoldLeaf® Service, where you can delight in gourmet meals crafted by executive chefs, while taking in the breathtaking views of the Canadian Rockies through the panoramic windows of the bi-level, glass-dome coach in GoldLeaf® Service, and indulge in sumptuous regionally inspired cuisine.
■ Bi-level, glass-dome coach

Enjoy a leisurely hike along the historic Chilkoot Trail to a tidal estuary where you will raft down the meandering Taiya River. As you hike the trail, you will follow in the footsteps of the thousands of prospectors who followed this route to the Yukon gold fields in the late 1890s. The trail passes through a vast swathe of rainforest, where you can expect to see splashes of bright wildflowers, an abundance of birds and crystal-clear streams that are prime waters for spawning salmon. Along the way, the guides will regale you with Klondike folktales and facts about the area’s natural history. Once you reach the Taiya River, you will settle into a raft and float downstream, keeping a lookout for bald eagles and seals watching the mouth of the river for salmon. Your tour will conclude with a hot drink and homemade cookies as you admire the spectacular view.
JUNEAU,
Savour Juneau’s local flavours during this delightful tasting tour and cooking demonstration in Alaska’s capital city. As a prelude to the culinary immersion, you will drive a few miles out of town to the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Centre. It’s a great place to learn about the 21km (3-mile) long river of ice and enjoy panoramic views of Mendenhall, the only glacier in southeast Alaska accessible by road. Back in Juneau, you will visit the Alaskan Brewing Company and discover how the brewery uses local ingredients to produce distinct ales and seasonal beers. A tasting of several beers follows. Then, it’s off to a local Alaskan restaurant. Here you can snack on authentic Alaskan dishes while enjoying the view.
CANADA
Explore Ketchikan’s rich heritage and surrounding natural beauty. Ketchikan is known as Alaska’s first city because it was the first settlement that travellers came to sailing north on the Inside Passage. It wasn’t founded first, but Ketchikan is historically important and especially proud of its native Alaskan culture. The city boasts the largest number of totem poles in the state. While visiting a historical sawmill, you will watch a totem artist demonstrate how they are hand-carved and learn the meaning of the symbols on many totems. A visit to Saxman Totem Park offers a different perspective, as dozens of colourful totems are displayed outdoors. Another demonstration awaits you at the Alaska Raptor Centre, where you will see a bald eagle up close. The centre rehabilitates injured birds of prey in hopes of releasing them into the wild.
VICTORIA, BRITISH COLUMBIA
Meander through fragrant Butchart Gardens at your leisure, taking in the splendour of themed gardens featuring colourful flora from various countries and areas of the world.
As you stroll the winding trails, it may be difficult to imagine that this incredibly lush, botanical wonderland was once a barren rock quarry. The transformation began in 1912 when Jennie Butchart started depositing topsoil by horse and cart into a section of the abandoned quarry now known as the Sunken Garden. Be sure to see it and other highlights such as the aromatic Rose Garden, the exotic Mediterranean Garden and the Italian Garden. The gardens are so inspiring, that you may wish to re-create a version once you return home by purchasing various seeds from the themed areas.
with REGENT CHOICE
Regent Choice Shore Excursions deliver another level of engagement. Their unique itineraries and smaller group formats require a discounted, supplementary charge, which is why we make sure to only select opportunities that go beyond the marvellous experiences on our Included & Unlimited Shore Excursions.
KETCHIKAN, ALASKA
Fly over the majestic wilds of the Tongass National Forest in a floatplane and land in the waters off Salmon Falls resort, where you will feast on iconic Alaskan dishes. You will fly there in a DeHavilland Beaver aircraft – the workhorse of the Alaskan bush – on a route over America’s largest national forest and the crystal-clear waterways that rim Revillagigedo Island. Many natural wonders lie below, including sea cliffs, deep fjords and mist-shrouded peaks. You may even spot black bears foraging for berries and humpback whales breaching the water’s surface. Shortly after the plane lands in Clover Pass Inlet, you will enjoy an enlightening tour of the fishing resort and then sit down to a classic Alaskan meal. Come hungry as you can expect to dine on signature dishes that may include crab cakes, soy-glazed salmon, and baked halibut with garlic lemon butter. Dessert will be just as mouthwatering.
JUNEAU, ALASKA
Engage in Alaska’s state sport of dog mushing on special equipment that is modified for the snow-free summer and interact with the huskies that effortlessly pull the sledge. The mushers’ camp is across the Gastineau Channel on Douglas Island, a heavily forested wilderness. It’s the ideal environment for the dogs to train for mushing through the snow come winter. You will gain a deep respect for the sport and the huskies by standing on the back of a wheeled sledge as the team of dogs pulls it along a trail with ease. Back at the kennel, you will see how the dogs are cared for, perhaps talk with the camp’s veterinarian and play with a retired sledge dog. Alaskan huskies are known for their great endurance, power and intelligence. You can’t help but be awed by their presence.
ICY STRAIT (HOONAH), ALASKA
Cruise into waters teeming with humpback whales and other marine life, and then dine on traditional Alaskan dishes at a seafood feast. Point Adolphus has the highest concentration of humpback whales in the Alaskan panhandle, so be on the lookout for these majestic and intelligent creatures. They will be breaching the water’s surface, waving their flukes up and down as they dive, and feeding to fatten up for their winter migration south. You might also observe frolicking Dall’s porpoises, Stellar sea lions, curious harbour seals and orca whales. Be sure to look skyward for majestic bald eagles, too. Following the whale-watching adventure, you too will have the opportunity to feast. A sumptuous meal of classic Alaskan dishes awaits you back in Hoonah. The menu will include seasonal shrimp and crabs, Andouille sausage and all sorts of sides. Afterwards, you can roast marshmallows around the campfire.
