Cholula Tequila Lime Project
MCC partnered with McCormick to transform Cholula Mexico’s labeling technology. Through enhanced efficiency and premium foil embellishments, we more than doubled production volume while earning worldwide recognition for packaging innovation.
THE OPPORTUNITY
McCormick sought an innovative labeling solution for packaging to support Cholula Mexico’s growing volume demands, improve efficiency, and enhance overall quality.
MCC’S SOLUTION
Streamlined production and improved performance by transitioning from Cut & Stack to Pressure Sensitive label application.
Enhanced premium visual appeal and achieved market differentiation with integrated foil embellishments.
Provided dedicated account team support and expertise throughout the implementation process.
RESULT
• More than doubled label volume in one year (18 million to 40.6 million labels).
• Enabled faster labeling processes and improved supply chain stability.
• Achieved “Best In Class” distinction at 2025 PAC Global Awards for product innovation.
RECYCLABILITY AND QUALITY AT SCALE

Introduction
“The transition allowed Cholula to maintain a more stable supply chain, process higher-quality labels more quickly, and exercise greater control over their orders and inventory. We were excited to celebrate this product’s global recognition with our partners at McCormick!”

OptiCoat™
MCC implemented a vertically-integrated coating solution that enabled McCormick to incorporate recycling-compatible pressure-sensitive labels for multiple brands. Through OptiCoat™ technology, we supported sustainability messaging while maintaining premium label performance across major product lines.
THE OPPORTUNITY
McCormick sought to transition its labels to recyclable options that would support both environmental goals and consumer messaging around sustainability. The solution would have to comply with recycling standards while maintaining label quality.
MCC’S SOLUTION
• Applied OptiCoat™, a fully customizable coating solution designed for recycling compatibility, to packaging operations across three major McCormick brands: Simply Asia, Frank’s RedHot, and Cholula.
• Integrated graphics highlighting containers made with 100% recycled plastic to support sustainability messaging.
OUR RESULT
• Produced more than 5 million labels across brands using OptiCoat™ technology, including 4 million+ labels printed yearto-date, demonstrating strong adoption.
• Enabled McCormick’s sustainability messaging while maintaining premium label

Additional Products That OptiCoat™ Can Enhance To Meet Sustainability Goals

“Our OptiCoat line offers APR-recognized material solutions for PET and HDPE containers. This approach to servicing our customers ensures products like Simply Asia, Cholula, and Frank’s RedHot meet not only the needs of McCormick but also those of today’s recycling streams.”
Tom Gordon Technical Director, Pressure Sensitive Labels
McCormick + MCC: Partnering with Purpose

recycLABEL™ PSL
MCC engineered a sustainable label solution that dramatically reduced McCormick’s environmental footprint while maintaining Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) compliance and delivering measurable impact across carbon, water, and energy metrics.
THE OPPORTUNITY
McCormick’s existing white semi-gloss paper label with Kraft liner created sustainability challenges around PET container recyclability. Paper contaminates the recycling stream, and high-coverage applications (55%-70% of surface area) exceeds APR guidelines.
MCC’S SOLUTION
Developed 2.24 mil White BOPP film with recyclable adhesive and 0.92 mil PET liner meeting APR and European PET Bottle Platform (EPBP) standards.
Engineered floating separation technology ensuring clean PET recycling.
RESULT OF 5BX1
• Reduced CO2 emissions by 29%, water usage by 33%, and energy consumption by 24% based on a 85 million annual label volume.
• Achieved APR Design Recognition for Critical Guidance for solving longstanding recyclability challenges.

MULTI-COLOR CORPORATION

A colorful history

MCC was founded in 1916, initially as the Franklin Development Company, later becoming Multi-Color Corporation.
While our name and industry have evolved over the years, MCC has consistently been a pioneer of label printing. Most notably, we developed in-mold labeling in the 1970s — a solution still widely used today.
Together with companies we’ve joined forces with, we’ve created premium labels for the world’s most iconic brands.

McCormick + MCC: Partnering with Purpose
Approach to Sustainable Solution Engineering

How do we create the “most sustainable” label for a brand?
Let’s Explore.
Where do you want to market your product?
Location matters when it comes to regulations, recycling, and supply chain security.
What is the container type and material?
What matters to you overall? Is it improving recyclability? Reusability? Overall carbon footprint reduction? 1 2 3 4
Your label will need to be compatible with the container, and certain combinations are more recyclable than others, for example.
What is your current label technology?
Whether you stick with your existing technology (i.e. pressure sensitive) or you’re considering a switch, it’s important to understand the implications here.
What are your sustainability goals?
