The Built Environment The Built Environment covers everything in our society from infrastructure to buildings to houses to recreation. The industry needs a diverse and talented workforce who are: Visionaries that plan, design, and engineer everything. Business leaders that manage the processes. The construction-related programs listed are Baltimore County Public Schools’ Career and Technical Education completer programs approved by the Maryland State Department of Education. A completer program contains a minimum of four credits (not individual courses) offered in a prescribed sequence in a program area, and leads to entry-level employment apprenticeships, and/or entrance in a two-or four-year college upon graduation. Students completing a program successfully are eligible for advanced placement in first year apprenticeship in the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Apprenticeship Training Program. They may also be eligible for advanced placement and/or testing opportunities through other union or non-union apprenticeship programs. Upon graduation students can enter employment, complete journeyperson apprenticeship, and/or earn a degree at a two-or four-year college.

CURRICULUM OVERVIEW

The Core provides competency-based training and hands-on technical experiences that relate to residential, commercial, and industrial construction pathways. The primary focus is on content and skills common to all construction trades.

Portfolios, competency profiles, and activities in this curriculum are designed to reinforce academic achievement and are an essential component of the various construction pathways offered in BCPS.

P-TECH @ Dundalk High School This program ranges from 4 to 6 years to meet the needs of every student. It is offered at Dundalk High School in partnership with Baltimore County Public Schools, the Community College of Baltimore County, Alban CAT, KCI Technologies, Stanley Black and Decker and Whiting-Turner Construction. Students begin this program full-time at the beginning of 9th grade.

What BCPS Offers Students will acquire skills and practical experience to be successful in a construction career with a focus on a wide range of skills across the industry. Skills are related to carpentry, electrical, HVAC (heating ventilation and air conditioning), and plumbing. Topics include basic skills such as safety, wall and floor framing, water and waste piping, as well as heating and cooling systems.

Students in the CTE programs will design, construct, and lead projects they will manage.

Students receive instruction in the procedures required for the installation and repair of wiring and control systems for residential and commercial systems. Instruction includes basic electrical theory, circuitry, motor control wiring, circuit protection, installation of lighting and power circuits (both commercial and residential), and the use of electrical test equipment. Theory taught in the instructional portion of this program follows the guidelines established by the National Electrical Code.

What BCPS Offers The Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) program is a comprehensive program that prepares students with related academic, workplace readiness, technical, and life-long learning skills that are needed in the modern workplace. The program will introduce students to the latest climate control systems with hands-on training on central air, heat pumps, oil and gas furnaces, and most light commercial units being used today.

The program prepares students to install and maintain water supply systems, waste removal systems, and various fixtures and gas appliances that provide for personal comfort in the home or commercial business setting. Students learn and freely use the tools of the trade along with plan reading, residential plumbing, joining cast-iron pipe, making flare and compression joints, commercial plumbing drain and waste piping, venting, and faucet/fixture repair installation.

WHAT IS APPRENTICESHIP MARYLAND Apprenticeship Maryland is a youth apprenticeship program for students, ages 16 and up, that is designed to lead to sustainable employment and further education based on career pathways in manufacturing and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) occupations or other occupations within the CTE Career Clusters.
