Throughout high school, I was constantly reminded by my older friends that “college is so much better,” and honestly, I did not believe them at first. Throughout my first semester at MCCC I learned that surprisingly, they were right.

I never liked school until I started college. College has been refreshing in a sense that I am finally learning what I want to learn about. It is motivating to be taking classes that are actually advancing me toward my career.

I am not saying it has been easy, because it definitely has not. The best way to describe the way I feel about the semester would be that it has been rewarding. This is the first time I have felt motivated and sure of myself in school.

My experience at a community college has been great, so it always surprises me when some people tend to look down on community college’s education.

I have enjoyed my somewhat unique experience of college in a sense that there is a great diversity of students in my classes.

When I made the decision to attend a community college, I was hesitant at first. I feared the feeling of missing out on the fun my friends would be experiencing away at their colleges. It was hard for me to transition into the content, happy state that I am in now. I don’t regret my decision at all.

Once I started focusing on myself and my education, all of the outside pressure coming from unwarranted opinions and fear of missing out

slowly disappeared.

Agora Staff Favorites:

I love any excuse to make food and desserts, so obviously, I love the holidays. Christmas is the time of year I get to spend the most time with my family and baking for them. Baking is something I have enjoyed for a few years now, and winter break gives me the opportunity to spend time doing it. I love making treats for my family and friends to try. I like to come up with creative cookies and give them away as gifts. I am looking forward to having a nice, relaxing winter break filled with a lot of dessert.

I enjoy the calm after the storm during Christmas. Around 5 p.m. on Christmas after the wrapping paper is cleaned up, after the beasts have had their feast, and when I’m watching the kids from my seat. It can be chaotic making sure the children get that special gift they wanted.

Then, helping prepare that savory meal that puts you on the couch afterwards. After the commotion, I really enjoy it when my family just hangs out in the living room watching a Christmas movie as the kids play with their gifts.

My favorite part of the holiday season is the time I get to spend with my family. For the last seven years my husband and I have had both our sets of parents over on Christmas morning to eat a big breakfast we make, and watch a movie in the theater.

This year, my parents will not be there because they moved to Traverse City and although that is disappointing, I look forward to continuing the tradition with my in-laws and siblings that have joined over the years.

Holiday Edition

The holidays are easily the best time of the year. An excuse to wear flannel pajama outfits, watch corny Netflix movies, and most importantly eat an absurd amount. Unlike Megan, I don’t do much of the baking.

If by chance I take part in the baking, my family can expect half of the batter to be gone. Having a boyfriend who is the exact same does not make the cute “couples baking date nights” any easier. I’m looking forward to spending it with family, friends and food.

My favorite parts of the holiday season are sitting down with family for a hot meal, the music of the season, and seeing the ground colored a peaceful white after snowing all night. It reminds me of snow days as a kid and going outside and playing all day in the snow.

The cold weather almost always guarantees a good night’s sleep for me, so I really enjoy sleeping when it’s cold and crisp outside. The weather also makes for a lovely walk around my city, everything just feels so peaceful and serene.

The holiday season always comes with good feelings for me. It’s nice to have a much needed break at the end of the year. It’s the perfect time to catch up with my family and friends I don’t see often.

We usually host a huge breakfast on Christmas morning with bacon, sausage, french toast and more. When I was younger, the whole family would spend the day at my grandma’s house. My most fond memories of Christmas come from the times spent there with friends, family, and of course, food.

My favorite decorations around campus

One thing that brings me the most joy this time of year is seeing all the lights and holiday magic. Walking across campus I was pleasantly surprised to see plenty of beautiful decorations in many of the buildings. I loved all the decorations and I was able to take photos of a few of my favorites. From decked out trees to snowmen indoors, the holiday cheer can be seen in many different departments across campus. Student Government is hosting their annual holiday decorating contest for staff and will announce the winning department on Dec. 15. “This event provides a fun way for staff to get involved on campus and get into the holiday spirit.” said Alaina Hartford, Student Government president.
