HIDDENGEMS free take one

Hello everyone!

My name is Megan Kane and I am the editor of the Agora.

Instead of the typical newspaper, the Agora currently prints zines. We use zines to share MCCC-related content in a colorful, creative way.

This is our third zine and in this edition, we follow a theme of “hidden gems” at the college. Our staff feels like there are many parts of MCCC’s campus that students may not be aware of.

We will be featuringdifferent locations, such as rooms, courtyards, and even trails we consider to be under utilized by students at MCCC.

There will be one more themed zine this semester. Look for our next zine on this date:

Dec. 12

If you have any suggestions for future zines, story ideas, or content for any of our platforms, please contact me at agora@monroeccc.edu.

Where to find gender neutral bathrooms on campus

Locations:

F Building: located on both east and west sides of the building.

C Building: located on both floors next to the elevator.

S Building: located in the back of the building (near DEI and GSA rooms)

L Building: located on first floor near lecture room 140 and down the hallway adjacent to the maintenance room on the second floor.

Currently, gender neutral bathrooms can be found in four buildings on MCCC’s campus. As renovations continue, gender neutral bathrooms will be added to every floor of each building, according to Jack Burns, director of Campus Planning and Facilities.

Students deserve to feel accommodated here at MCCC, and adding gender neutral bathrooms to each of the school buildings seems to be a step in the right direction. Gender neutral bathrooms are intended to offer a more comfortable bathroom option for non-cisgendered students, making restrooms free of labels or pressure available to anyone who may need them. This could prevent students from feeling a sense of anxiety about such private matters, and allow them to feel safer while at school. It should be a main priority of any school to take care of its students and make sure no voices go unheard, and it seems like adding gender neutral bathrooms could be a way to do this. In addition, if you are cisgender, the bathrooms are still available to you. Overall, they provide the option for any student on campus to have an added sense of privacy and comfort. The move to put one of these bathrooms on each floor of all campus buildings will hopefully make all Huskies feel a little more at home.

Holladay Theater

This mini theater that students may not be aware of is located in the basement of the C Building. The theater can be accessesed by students and the public by making a reservation through Mary Lyons, administrative assistant for Events and Reservations. The theater has been used for credit classes, MCCC hosted plays and club events. It has also been used for smaller presentations from groups both on and off campus to show movies, for guest speakers and general meetings. The theater holds 50 audience members, but depending on its use may require a tech director to be present.

To reserve the Holladay Theater, contact Mary Lyons at mlyons@monroeccc.edu

Courtyards and Trails

The MCCC campus is home to gorgeous courtyards and walking trails.

In between many of the buildings are paved open spaces where students can walk between buildings, or sit to study.

Located near the back of the campus is a bridge leading to a series of walking trails.

Students can take a break in between classes to enjoy the outdoors or even utilize them for exercise.

Fitness Center

The MCCC Fitness Center is located in the H Building. It features free weights, machines, tread- mills, stair-steppers, and staionary bicycles.

Current students and alumni are welcome. Everyone using the fit- ness center must sign the liability waiver form, and present photo identification. Alumni must pay the yearly membership fee.

It is ran by student assistants who are trained on proper use of the equipment.

The hours for the fitness center vary each semester, and are locat- ed on the MCCC wesbite as well as more information.

Employee Cole Nelson said on average about 10-15 stu- dents and alumni come and workout a day.

Cafeteria and Food Pantry

Located in the cafeteria is Heck’s Market, the food pantry at MCCC. All students can access the market by emailing the pantry at, foodpantry@monroeccc.edu or stopping by The Foundation office located in Room S-154. Students can remain anonymous by checking in using only their student ID number. If a student has a class and needs their food items to stay cold there is a fridge available to store their items until available for pickup. The food pantry can also direct students to the Student Success Center for additional resources as needed.

If you would like to learn more about the food pantry you can check out Episode 11 of The Forum featuring Josh Myers, executive director of The Foundation, by scanning the QR code below.

DEI Room

Ever need a place to socialize, study, or relax? The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) room is an all-inclusive space in the S Building, designed for any students to use at any time, especially as a safe space for LGBTQ+ students at MCCC. The room offers couches, chairs, a counter area to serve food, and a multimedia TV allowing any students to broadcast from their computer.

“It’s a place where people can go hang out, they can study, they can talk without fear of judgment or anything else,” said Gerald McCarty, director of Student Success. “There’s really no rules for the room, just go and take advantage of it, it’s a quiet place, it’s a safe space for people and it’s getting more use than it did at the start of this semester.”

Student Government Room

Need a formal space to host your meeting? The Student Government room at MCCC offers movable desks and chairs that can be configured for any meeting you may have, in addition to a sink, a refrigerator, a microwave, and a multimedia TV for hosting virtual meetings. Located in the S Building, the room is open for any students, but must be reserved for events through Mary Lyons, the Administrative Assistant for Events and Reservations. Despite its name, the room isn’t just used for Student Government.

“We’ve had bake sales, we’ve had Puppies & Popsicles, we’ve had several other events in there sponsored by student clubs,” Gerald McCarty said, director of Student Success. “Obviously people identify it as the Student Government room, but other clubs can certainly use it to hold their meetings, bake sales, or whatever else they might wanna do in there.”
