Michigan Community College Act to allow the institutions to offer Baccalaureate degrees. This, in theory, would mean that students would not have to leave the community

college campus to earn their bachelor’s degree in certain fields. At Monroe County Community College (MCCC), Sienna Heights offer students the option of continuing their education at the community college. Potential degrees include business administration, psychology, accounting, multidisciplinary and teacher education, as well as an associates of applied science. “I would get my [bachelor’s] degree from MCCC if they offered it,” Melania Cupp, a Sienna Heights student, said. Cupp is a business major at Sienna Heights but takes classes at MCCC. With amendment to the Michigan Community College Act, MCCC would be allowed to structure its own departments and programs to help students earn a four year degree. According to MCCC president, David Nixon, students at SMC college do not have the opportunity to get a four year degree unless they travel far. “[SMC] in particular has been trying to convince the other community colleges that it would be something all the community colleges would want to do… there are a number of community colleges that either oppose it or there are community colleges like ours that already have four years degrees being offered on their campuses,” Nixon said. “Do community colleges have to offer the degree or could you enter a partnership with one or more universities to accomplish the same end?” Conway Jeffress, president of Schoolcraft College asked.

hree popular birth control methods include Ortho Tri-cyclen (pill), DepoProvera (shot), and Ortho Evra (patch). All of these may pose some type of health risk. “Our policy is that when a birth control method is dispensed, information is given about the risks,” said Patsy Bourgeois, nursing supervisor at Monroe County Health Department. According to Bourgeois, possible side affects for all of these products include change in appetite, weight gain, abdominal pain, dizziness, headache and nausea. Doctors say these can be fixed by taking the pill before bed, if an oral contraceptive is used.
