Welcome to Anthony Shaffer’s Sleuth!

Having had the distinct pleasure of directing Ken Ludwig’s adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express, I have a deep appreciation for the heart thumping power of a good mystery/thriller. Our audiences seem to have a great appetite for this genre as well! From Ken Ludwig’s Baskerville to Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap, our audiences have come out in force and cheered us on, asking for more.

The person who first encouraged me to produce a mystery at McCarter is the director of tonight’s production, one of my most gifted protégés and an Artistic Director now in his own right, Adam Immerwahr. In 2016, his production of Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap was so extraordinarily successful, I wanted him to return to McCarter to direct a mystery during my legacy season. I am happy to say he passionately advocated for Sleuth, one of the most original thrillers written in the English language. A wickedly sly, fiendishly theatrical tour de force, I hope it keeps you glued to the edge of your seat!

And—I hope you come back to see The Refuge Plays, a beautiful new play written by one of our rising stars. Playwright Nathan Alan Davis brings to life four generations of an African American family. Written with glorious musicality, poetry, humor, and love, the play brings us to a new understanding of the universal power of family and legacy.

I expect Nathan Alan Davis to make a major mark in the American theater. I could not be prouder to close my final season with Nathan’s play.

Welcome to the fourth play of our season— thank you for joining us! McCarter has a wonderful tradition of producing smart, witty murder mysteries which have thrilled our audiences. In recent years we have staged great mysteries from Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express to Arthur Conan Doyle’s Hound of the Baskerville.

This play represents another wonderful McCarter tradition. Adam Immerwahr, a former McCarter Intern and our former Associate Artistic Director is returning to McCarter again.

Adam is also the director of McCarter’s iconic A Christmas Carol and has done a masterful job directing Sleuth.

We are celebrating Artistic Director and Resident Playwright Emily Mann’s 30th and final season at McCarter, and having Adam return to McCarter as the director showcases one of the key tenants of Emily’s time here—our apprentice program for emerging leaders in the arts.

Each season apprentices arrive at McCarter from across the country, living in shared housing while working alongside their professional counterparts. The apprentice program has been a vital educational stop for many of the country’s leading theatre professionals, as you can see from these comments from two former apprentices (previously called interns): “The McCarter Internship continues to impact my life today. The skills I gained were invaluable. The theater that I was exposed to is like nothing else I have ever experienced. Each young person should immerse themselves in this type of environment post-graduation. The staff were extremely influential, helping me understand the way in which not just a professional theater runs, but a professional organization. He is currently Artistic Director of Theater J, the nation’s largest and most prominent Jewish theater (located in Washington, D.C.). Adam’s NYC directing credits: The Public, Theater Row (both for Summer Play Festival), Ensemble Studio Theatre, The Wild Project, and NYU’s Studio Tisch.

Internationally, he directed the African premiere of The Convert (nominated for Zimbabwe’s National Arts Medal).

Anthony Shaffer

(Playwright, 1926 – 2001) delighted audiences with his ingenious comic thriller Sleuth, which played 2,359 performances in London’s West End and more than 2,000 performances on Broadway, where it won the Tony Award for Best Play of 1971. He went on to write the screenplay for the 1972 Oscar-nominated film version. Shaffer devised several additional plays, notably Murderer (1975). J. Allen Suddeth

(Fight Director) has worked professionally for the past 35 years out of the New York area. Allen is a Broadway veteran of twelve shows, ranging in style from Angels In America, to Disney’s Aladdin, and Newsies. Further, he has staged action for over 150 OffBroadway shows, and hundreds more Regional Theater shows from Seattle to Denver to Baltimore and Atlanta. For television, Allen stunt coordinated over 750 episodes, on sound stages in New York, and on locations such as Jamaica, Arizona, and Buenos Aires. Allen is the author of Fight Directing For The Theatre and holds Fight Master rank in the Society of American Fight Directors. Dixie Uffelman

six Broadway shows to her credit, 16 years as an Executive Board Member of the Stage Managers’ Association, is a Director-at-Large and the current Chair of the Del Hughes Awards and event in NYC, and is a contributor to the book Sound and Music for the Theatre; The Art & Technique of Design. Cheryl currently teaches at Mason Gross School of the Arts, conducts master classes for the Yale School of Drama, and named a SUNY Notable Alumni in the Arts. MFA: Yale School of Drama. Cheryl joins the SMA, AEA, and USITT in celebrating the Year of the Stage Manager 2020!

(Director of Production) is in her second season at McCarter, after working in Chicago, IL for fifteen years. Most recently she was the Production Manager of the Wirtz Center for Performing Arts at Northwestern University. While at Northwestern, she managed dozens of productions, including the world premieres of David Catlin’s Moby Dick and Laura Schellhardt’s Ever in the Glades, a production which then travelled to the Kennedy Center. Before Northwestern, Uffelman was the Associate Production Manager of Steppenwolf Theatre Company, the Production Manager of the House Theatre of Chicago, and the Program Director of Barrel of Monkeys.

Emily Mann

(Artistic Director and Resident Playwright) is a multi-award–winning playwright and director in her 30th and final season as Artistic Director and Resident Playwright.

During her tenure, Emily wrote 15 new plays and adaptations, directed over 50 productions, produced nearly 180 plays and musicals, supported the work of emerging and legendary playwrights, received the Tony Award® for Outstanding Regional Theater, commissioned the Tony Award®–winning play Vanya & Sonia & Masha & Spike

by Christopher Durang, and opened the beautiful Roger S. Berlind Theatre.

Scenic Design for Sleuth by Alexander Dodge

Alexander Dodge is an award-winning designer, who has created stunning sets for musicals, operas, dance, and plays.

Fans of McCarter’s theatrical thrillers will remember Dodge’s beautiful work in designing the set of Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap. For this production of

Sleuth, Dodge and the design team conducted painstakingly nuanced research, leading to the creation of some of the creepiest set pieces ever to grace the McCarter stage! On these pages, you’ll find just a few of these items. See if you can spot them during the production!

“A set like Sleuth is actually one of the more challenging things to design. There are so many seemingly minor details that are essential for the various special effects and stunts. Things have to be placed and positioned in just the right way for the action and some of the bits to work and be effective. The challenge is making it look lived–in and natural. It was such a pleasure bringing this one to fruition.”

Look up! Can you spot these props on the actual set?

Norman Manor House: The set you’ll see today is designed to resemble the inside of a Norman manor house in Wiltshire, England. Many of the houses built in this style were meant to look like castles from the outside, and had towers and sometimes even a moat! One manor house in Wiltshire is thought to have been home to Sir John Falstaff, who was immortalized by Shakespeare in Henry IV and The Merry Wives of Windsor.

“Adam [the director of Sleuth] and I were intrigued by the idea of this game hoarders paradise. Having a room that was mostly just shelves of books, games and various tchotchkes seemed like a great playground for the characters.”

Senat: One of the earliest known board games, Senat originated in Egypt.

It dates back as far as 3500 BCE! You can still play Senat, although the rules now used to play the game are based on snippets of text that span over a thousand years, so it’s unlikely that they reflect the actual gameplay in ancient Egypt.

“I love this piece. Adam was familiar with the game and excited that we could have one in the show. Even just as a piece of furniture, it is a gorgeous object.”

Nine Men’s Morris: Nine Men’s Morris is a strategy board game dating all the way back to the Roman Empire. It is a “solved game”– that is, there is an optimal strategy, and, with a perfect play from both sides, the game will always end in a draw.

“I actually played this game as a child. I always admired its deceptive simplicity and great design. I am happy to be able to feature one on stage.”

Laughing Sailor: The “Laughing Sailor” is a coin-operated amusement arcade machine, which was popular around the 1950’s. When a coin is inserted, the sailor moves around and laughs.

“By far the creepiest prop I have ever had on a stage. If you peer directly into his eyes, he will take your soul. We custom built our little guy. During construction the props department made sure that no one was ever left in the room alone with him. No joke.”

Swansea Puzzle Jug: In the 18th and 19th centuries, a new type of puzzle was popularized – a puzzle in the form of a jug. People were challenged to drink from the jug, which had holes in the spout, without spilling the liquid inside. Typically, the trick was a secret spout that went up the handle that allowed the drinker to sip like a straw. The puzzle jug mentioned in Sleuth comes from Swansea, a city in Wales.

“This may be a spoiler. This jug has to get replaced from show to show, so without giving too much away, we are not using a real antique.”

Mashie Niblick: A mashie niblick was an early form of golf club, most equivalent to the contemporary 9-iron wedge. “Niblick” is derived from Scottish Gaelic, and roughly translates to “short nosed,” a name that makes sense given the small size of the club.

THE REFUGE PLAYS MAY 8 – JUNE 7

As a playwright and director, McCarter’s Artistic Director Emily Mann knows the value that readings, developmental workshops, and artist retreats have in the creative process. The McCarter LAB is a creative incubator, providing artistic and financial support, allowing McCarter to take artistic risks in the interest of identifying and nurturing promising talent and new work for its stages. It allows freelance artists to work all around the country while knowing that they have a creative home back here in Princeton. Nathan Alan Davis, author of the upcoming The Refuge Plays, is one of those artists.

Staff attended a reading of Davis’ The Refuge Plays, a trilogy he was beginning while a student at Juilliard.

McCarter began to track his plays and Mann instantly fell in love with Davis’ work. From that point on, he has been a part of each season in some capacity.

From participating in developmental programs such as “In the Writer’s Voice” to attending the Sallie B. Goodman Artists Retreat, snippets of The Refuge Plays have come to life around McCarter’s tables and rehearsal halls.

Davis’ relationship with McCarter began in the summer of 2015, when he was commissioned by the theatre’s Education Department to write a short play in collaboration with local high school students as a way to integrate theater into the teaching of science and mathematics. That same year, a member of McCarter’s Artistic

Davis participated in a collaboration between McCarter and Princeton University where he was commissioned to write a short play as a part of The Princeton and Slavery Project in the fall of 2017.

That same semester, Davis became a Lecturer at the Lewis Center for the Arts.

He currently teaches playwriting and was recently named a Roger S. Berlind ’52 Playwright-in-Residence.

Princeton University and McCarter have become the artistic home for Davis and his trilogy.

The Refuge Plays shed light on these unanswerable and existential questions through a unique lens and mystical world crafted by Davis, who has an “uncanny gift for allegory and language” (The Paris Review). McCarter audiences will have the unique opportunity to see a play with four years of developmental support from the artistic home where it began.

Join us as we close out the 2019-2020 Season with this mystical, compassionate, life-affirming world premiere.

It is fitting that The Refuge Plays is about searching for and finding a home. Davis shared that the title of the trilogy comes from “the need to create a space for yourself, someplace safe for you and your children that is what you want it to be.

Questions arise when you deal with a society that doesn’t support that particular dream.”

When asked about the impetus for writing the plays, he recalls his first few years in New York City: “A few years ago I moved to New York with my wife and three daughters. We were living in this one bedroom apartment, and living in close quarters can definitely set you to thinking about ‘what do I tell my kids, and what do I not tell them?’ ‘How do I help them navigate their lives in a world which is so chaotic and so unfriendly and can be so violent?’ These are questions that most parents and teachers face, in terms of ‘what do we teach our children?’”
