This past school year, North Park Elementary School accomplished A LOT. We re-articulated our mission statement, established a robust portrait of an NPES graduate, updated our K-5 literacy curriculum, purchased the neighboring property (2015 W. Montrose), launched new programs like Shark Week, Days-Off, onsite high school test prep, and opened a new state-of-the-art innovation lab. Each of these accomplishments is informed by our strategic plan and our small school with a big impact is undoubtedly positioned for sustainable success It is your support that enables all of this work today and sets our vision for the future We are grateful for your generous contributions of time, resources, and perspective
We have a robust strategic plan, an accomplished and talented faculty and administrative team to implement it, and a remarkable community of engaged families that propel the school forward. With this robust foundation, I have recently been reflecting on our culture: the aspects of NPES that invoke pride in our school, bring a sense of identity and belonging to everyone in our community, and distinguish our place in the landscape of independent schools Our school’s origin story undoubtedly informs our culture In 1980, a group of parents, seeking a richer educational experience for their children, established an independent school that valued innovative curricula with depth, breadth, and high standards for teaching and learning. Equally important was creating a learning environment that was practical, unpretentious, inclusive, and grounded in transparency.
As we approach NPES’ 45th year, what is our culture? Articulating culture can be difficult, but noting our organizational practices and behaviors is not. As we continue to invest in NPES’ sustainable success, leaning into who we are and what we do better than anyone, is worth noting. Here, at our school, we foster a culture where we aspire to be the best independent school by:
Involving our families in a vibrant learning community
Empowering our faculty and staff through a focus on professional growth, leadership development and inclusive excellence
Remaining nimble, adaptable, and dynamic in our academic and extra-curricular programs and how we engage in collaborative problem-solving both inside and beyond the classroom
Centering the student experience in our decision making
Each of these behaviors, which reflect and in turn amplify our unique school culture, rely on your generous engagement. On behalf of the board of trustees, thank you for your past and ongoing support of NPES!
RAVI KALHAN BOARD CHAIR
This year, NPES proudly introduced an updated mission statement and the Portrait of a Graduate, both reflecting our school’s current strengths and future aspirations. These initiatives were shaped through thoughtful collaboration among faculty, staff, parents, and the Board of Trustees, ensuring our values, goals, and educational approach align with the needs of our students.
The Portrait of a Graduate plays a vital role in our mission, outlining the essential qualities and skills we seek to develop in our students by the time they graduate It serves as a roadmap for curriculum development, teaching strategies, and the overall student experience. By focusing on attributes like critical thinking, empathy, resilience, and collaboration, we ensure that our graduates are not only academically prepared but also ready to make meaningful contributions beyond NPES
We are deeply grateful to the more than sixty individuals who participated in the five-month process of creating these guiding documents. Their efforts have resulted in statements that clearly reflect who NPES is today and the school we aspire to be. These documents were unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees in January 2024, and w accreditation visit in fall 2027

At NPES, we have known since the school’s founding in 1980 that academic excellence does not come from the size of a school, but from an expansive mindset about teaching and learning; a challenging, relevant, and engaging multicultural curriculum; the best teachers, who themselves continue to learn and grow; and a collaborative, creative, joyful yet determined culture of excellence. Even a timetested exemplary elementary school program like ours, preparing students to thrive and lead in high school and beyond for more than four decades now, remains impactful over time only because it adapts and evolves with the latest research on teaching and learning, the needs of today’s students, new technologies, and the current societal context in which families work and live
Our small school with a big impact is incredibly successful because it offers the best of both worlds: a deep understanding of and appreciation for individual students (their gifts and their needs) and a genuine sense of safety and belonging children develop made possible by our smaller, more personal and intimate scale and a strong, diverse, and engaged community with a breadth of educational experiences for students typically found only in larger institutions.
This is why NPES graduates thrive at Lane Tech, DePaul College Prep, Walter Payton, St Ignatius, Francis W Parker, Amundsen, the University of Illinois, Oberlin College, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Tulane University, University of Colorado, Dennison University, and dozens of other secondary and postsecondary schools. They engage whole-heartedly in the life of their elementary school in the classroom, in clubs/activities, in athletics, and across the city and even the continent, to build their academic skills and deep conceptual understandings, plus the confidence, self-advocacy, social-emotional skills, resilience, and cultural literacy needed to thrive in the 21st Century As a result, NPES graduates are poised to bloom where planted.
In this section of the annual report you can read about some exciting new program initiatives that grew from our recent strategic planning process, which included hundreds of voices from across our school community–parents/caregivers, faculty/staff, alumni, and current students We are now in the second year of plan implementation (with at least one more to follow) and are hard at work designing and implementing improvements to our already-strong educational experience. Your generosity to our school last year made it possible for us to develop and pilot many of the new programs you’ll see here while continuing to update curricula, hire the best teachers, support the ongoing education and growth of our faculty, and organize and staff our school to support academic excellence and social-emotional well-being for every student and employee. We literally could not have accomplished what we’ve accomplished thus far without your support. On behalf of our students, thank you!

More than thirty NPES students, from junior kindergarten to eighth grade, participated in designing, creating, and hosting a museum about Changemakers. Acting as museum staff, students managed every aspect of the project, from curating exhibits to running the museum café and gift shop. On the last day of camp, the museum opened its doors to visitors, showcasing the incredible curiosity, creativity, and collaboration of our students.
Shark Week, our new summer academic program, exemplifies what learning the NPES way looks like - engaging, skills-rich, and fun
We are deeply grateful to the exceptional Shark Week faculty and staff who made this possible: Wendy Andrews, Kerry Maman, Brad Riggs, Cidney Truong, Mary Wells, Sarah Woltmann, Fyona Young, and Nya Young

This year, NPES proudly celebrated the grand opening of its high tech Innovation Lab, made possible by the generous contributions from our community during the highest-grossing paddle raise ever at our recent Gala This new space, equipped with cutting-edge technology like 3-D printers, drones, a laser engraver, and an updated robotics center, provides students with unparalleled opportunities for hands-on learning and creative problemsolving
The Innovation Lab is a prime example of how philanthropic support allows NPES to offer exceptional programs that keep our school ahead of the curve. Contributions like these ensure that we continue to provide a dynamic, forward-thinking education that prepares our students for the future. The generosity of our donors doesn't just enhance our facilities it directly impacts the quality of education, innovation, and growth that sets NPES apart We are deeply grateful to everyone who helped bring this vision to life.
NPES is committed to sustaining a diverse, inclusive, and equitable community, with every student, employee, and family being treated with dignity, respect, and compassion as they develop a genuine sense of belonging at our school. We want all students to feel that when they are absent our community is not whole, and to know that their school loves them
Emphasizing an experience-centered education with a rich multicultural curriculum that includes real-world experiences through NPES’ Edventures Program is one way we celebrate diversity and create belonging. Another is by striving continuously to provide students and families with identity mirrors in our school, as well as windows into cultures and perspectives that differ from their own.
While we are not done building and sustaining a school population that better reflects the incredibly rich diversity of our city, in the past two years NPES has increased its percentage of enrolled students of color (self-identified through their parents) by 10% This represents an increase from 18% of all students in the fall of 2022 to 28% in the fall of 2024
Furthermore, over the last three years we have increased our exceptional faculty members who identify as people of color by 500%, now one fifth of our teachers/associate teachers. Our population includes individuals who selfidentify as Asian/Pacific Islander, Latinx, and African-American/Black The three largest groups are Multi-Racial, Asian/Pacific Islander, and Latinx 72% of our student population self-identify as white
We also have a broad spectrum of gender and sexuality identities in our community, and we celebrate the unique abilities, learning styles, and important contributions of NPES students who offer neurodivergence, currently comprising about 20% of our school. We actively work to expand the school’s reach into new communities (now serving 17 different zip codes) through authentic, transparent, and inclusive marketing and word of mouth, as well as an updated and compelling web presence And our equitable and equally-transparent search process enables us to recruit the best teachers and form more diverse pools of candidates from across the region when there is an opportunity available to work at NPES.
For more information, read about our seven purposeful actions to strengthen further NPES’ culture of diversity and belonging, and our Board of Trustees’ Statement on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
As of June 2024, all NPES teachers and administrators have completed at least one SEED (Seeking Educational Equity and Diversity) program seminar This initiative has significantly enhanced cultural competency, empowering staff to engage meaningfully with students on important topics related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Every new hire participates in this training at the start of each school year.
Implementation of Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) through which faculty take a critical lens in examining their teaching to ensure it is equitable, inclusive, and culturally responsive
Identification of specific DEIB goals that are embedded in curriculum mapping and overlap with our Portrait of a Graduate
Identification of our Educational Values tha are rooted in creating a sense of belonging for all members of our community and that guide our teaching and learning.
Development of a parent Cultural Awareness committee that works closely with the Assistant Head of School and runs family facing events to elevate and celebrate the diversity within our community.
A new literacy curriculum that ensures our literature is full of windows and mirrors for our students and touches upon all aspects of student identity
Since our founding in 1980, the affirming and trusting partnership between parents and faculty/staff has been a hallmark of NPES’ school culture, providing a healthy and positive climate in which our students know they are safe and loved, and can thrive This partnership continues to be rooted in empathy, listening for understanding, transparency, respectful truth-telling, collaborative problem-solving, easy access to school staff, and mutual recognition that all have the best interests of children in mind. NPES further believes that parents seeking a community of families for their family should find that in their child’s school, and that schools should provide multiple pathways for parents to get involved in the school to the extent they are able
Volunteering at NPES has shown me the incredible impact we can make when we come together as a community The spirit of giving here isn’t just about what we contribute - it’s about how our collective efforts enrich the experience and opportunities for every student. - Davin Peelle, Board of Trustees, Development Committee Chair
They say it takes a village to raise a child. Being involved at NPES has enabled me to build connections with other families that have become my village. Our kids then feel connected to a bigger community that is rooted in the values of the school but that extends beyond its walls. And we also have a lot of fun while doing it!
-Anne Wong, Room Parent, Association Steering Committee Member
The success of North Park Elementary School is deeply rooted in our strong culture of giving and engagement of our community From parents and alumni to grandparents, faculty, and friends, your generosity continues to be a driving force behind our mission of nurturing confident, self-reliant students.
This year, the collective support for the NPES Fund and participation in events like the Fin Run, Fall Event, VIP Day, and the Gala has been extraordinary. Together, we have strengthened the NPES experience and enriched the lives of our students in meaningful ways.
I am inspired daily by the generosity and spirit of the NPES community. Your involvement is instrumental in creating the memorable, impactful moments that define our school each year Thank you for being an essential part of our continued success - Erin Leyden, Director of Development and Marketing

Our VIP Day was our largest and most special yet, with grandparents, extended family, and friends filling our hallways and classrooms with joy and excitement. The event highlighted the essential role of extended family in the NPES community, underscoring how their support and involvement are vital to our school’s success
From exploring classrooms to enjoying student performances and participating in the creation of community art, it was a day full of memorable moments. We are deeply grateful to our VIP guests for their continued support, which enriches the lives of our students and strengthens the NPES family. Your presence and engagement continue to inspire and uplift us, and we look forward to many more opportunities to celebrate together!
On May 30, 2024, NPES proudly hosted its first inaugural event in 40 years, honoring a school founder and long-standing principal, Lynn Lawrence. The evening was a powerful celebration of our vibrant and growing community, bringing together alumni from as far back as 1985 to as recent as the Class of 2023. It was a night filled with reconnection, storytelling, and reflection on the lasting impact NPES has had on so many lives.
This milestone event showcased the enduring strength of our school and its ability to foster lifelong bonds. As NPES continues to grow its alumni network, we are committed to engaging with alumni through future events and expanding our alumni database Strengthening these connections is key to ensuring that the NPES legacy thrives for generations to come.
On November 28, 2023, in celebration of Giving Tuesday, the NPES Board of Trustees and Development Committee launched the season of giving with a generous $20,000 challenge grant to the NPES Fund. Every dollar donated until December 31 was matched dollar-for-dollar, up to $20,000, thanks to their commitment.
In just 24 hours, the NPES community stepped up in an incredible way, raising $20,355, which, combined with the $20,000 challenge grant, brought the total to over $40,000!
We are deeply grateful to the generous members of our community for their support

neighborhood explorations, and travel opportunities
From visiting local organizations and exploring Chicago’s diverse neighborhoods, to traveling on a civil rights tour or an international trip to a Spanish-speaking country, these experiences extend learning far beyond the school walls, encouraging intellectual curiosity and personal development
However, maintaining these expansive programs requires resources beyond standard tuition. The Spring Appeal played a crucial role in ensuring that we can continue to offer these transformative experiences without additional costs to families. Generous contributions were made to help cover transportation, entry fees, staffing, and the development of future programming, ensuring every student has access to these enriching opportunities.
