"THERE'S DADDY"

NEW EDUCATION TESTING SERVICE FOR ALL HANDS ,

There is increasing evidence to prove that a large number of Marines are interested in taking steps NOW toward completing all requirements for a high school diploma, toward gaining entrance or advanced standing in college or toward getting a "head start" on a particular job. While this can usually be accomplished by completion of one of more courses either in Off-Duty classes or by correspondence, there is still another avenue of approach which should be pubZicized to all Marines. The United states Armed Forces In~titute, working with the American Council on Education and cooperating associations, has developed tests which are designed to establish the relative educational level of an individual. This set of tests is called the General Educational Development Tests. It it a battery of five tests designed to measure an individual's "General Educational Development" on two levels as related either to graduating high school seniors, or to college students. These tests have been standardized by adminlsterirg them to thousands of students of the level they were designed to test. From the resulting scores, forms have been established to which one can readily relate his own scores. It must be pointed out that a Marine taking this examination need not fear that failure to meet the reqUired minimum score will bring him discredit from any source. ShOUld he fail, his grades Will not be sent to his school authority nor will they be made available to anyone in the service. The American Council on Education in "A Guide to the Evaluational Experiences in the Armed Services' makes the following statement: "It is recommended that secondary school should grant a diploma if the examinee satisfies either of the following requirements, providing that legal requirements of local authority have been met. 1. The examinee has made a standard score of 35, or above, on each of the five tests in the battery. 2. ':Dhe examinee has made an average standard score of 45, or above, on the five tests in the battery." Letter of Instruction 1096, dated 9 August, 1945, states that the Marine Corps will accept, for the purpose of Marine Corps administration, satisfactory completion of the General Educational Development test in lieu of a high school diploma for any assignment which requires high school graduation as a prerequisite.

The Area Special Services Office, Education Section has recently been stocked with these tests and authorized to administer them on a large scale to any personnel who desire this service. Hours for testing be from 0900 to 1600 Monday through Friday. Arrangements for testing must be made through the individual unit Special Services Officers, who in turn will contact the Area Education Officer in Building 16-A-1. For special testing service other than these hours arrangements are to be made through individual Special Services Officers. Marines interested in this program of testing should contact the Special Service Officer in his unit for further detailf' and information concerning this service.
