26TH R:EGI ENT RETURNS ROM o PAC- DUTY It was quite a different sight for members of the 26th Marine Regiment, Fifth Marine Division, as they debarked from the USS SARASOTA, APA, at San Diego last Tuesday, February 19, on the anniversary of the invasion of Iwo Jima. Instead of Jap machine gunners waiting to cut them down, as it was at Iwo a year previous, the returning veterans were greeted by wives, :>.nd children, mothers and fathers, and lonesome .sweethearts. The arrival of last Tuesday's Marines made a total of 117,271 Marine Corps personnel to enter the San Diego port from the So Pac since October 1. This figure, though not large when compared to figures of the other services, is of creditable size when the comparative strength of the Marine Corps is considered. It reflects with credit the job done in returning combat Leathernecks to the states. Aboard the Sarasota was Col C. B. Graham of Batavia, N. Y., Regimental Commander, who led the men on the Iwo invasion and 23 officers and 554 enlisted men members of the 26th Regiment'~ Third Battalion, who have been on garrison duty at Peleliu in the Palaus. With the Sarasota's 262 tons of eqUipment and gear, the total of Marine Corps shipping tonnage to pass through the San Diego port since October 1, when the move home from the Pacific got underway in earnest, has reached 106,129 tons. The returning veterans were brought to camPen for processing and discharge.

LtCol Eustace R. Smoak has been named CamPen Provost Marshal replacing LtCol Daniel P. Closser, who was detached from this command for duty with FMF PAC. Col Smoak took over his new duties last week and in addition to serving as camp Provost Marshal he is also serving Despite the fact that emphasis as Area Provost Marshal. is on demobilization, 100 Ma_ rines signed up for another hitch following a request from Separ- in the Peace-Time Corps following their discharge here dUring ation Companies in regard to the past week.
