LAST SATURDAY AT LAWLER

»»Vermont edged Merrimack in overtime to complete a weekend sweep at Lawler Rink with a 2-1 victory last Saturday. »»Like it did on Friday, Merrimack used the power play to strike first on Saturday with senior Jace Hennig getting the goal. »»Vermont would draw even midway through the second frame, and the score went unchanged through the remainder of regulation despite a power play for each side in the third. »»Sophomore Cole McBride nearly won it while on a breakaway in overtime but was denied. Moments later, the Catamounts won it on a lucky puck bounce to give them the sweep.

LAST FEBRUARY AGAINST THE BLACK BEARS

»»Merrimack took three of four points and the season series against Maine in a two-game set last February at Lawler. »»The Warriors rallied from a goal down each night; in the opener, the hosts came back from down 3-1, tying it with 1:32 left before Jace Hennig won it in overtime. »»On Saturday, Merrimack tied it at 2-2 at 7:34 of the third before Maine went ahead 14 seconds later. Hennig was the hero again, tying it at 9:32, and that score went unchanged.

BEST AGAINST MAINE

»»Merrimack's senior class has gone 2-3-1 in their careers against Maine, including a 1-1-0 mark at Alfond Arena. »»Seniors Brett Seney (2g, 5a) and Jace Hennig (5g, 1a) have had the most success, while junior Ludvig Larsson and sophomore Sami Tavernier each have two goals against Maine. »»Drew Vogler is the only player on the roster to have faced Maine with one start (0-1-0, 2.98 GAA, .909 SV%).

HEARTBREAKER

»»Merrimack lost its first overtime game overall in nearly two years last Saturday against Vermont, including its first overtime loss at Lawler Rink in about 17 months. »»The last time the Warriors lost in the sudden death session at home was against Notre Dame on Nov. 14, 2014 (3-2). »»Merrimack's last overtime game overall was a 3-2 defeat at Maine on Feb. 20, 2016.

»»Merrimack is also just 2-4-4 when leading after the first period this year; in the three previous seasons combined, the Warriors were 21-3-1 when leading after 20 minutes.

AGAINST THE LEAGUE

»»Merrimack has gone 4-11-2 in Hockey East play this year and has been outscored by a 48-35 margin in league play (-13). »»Merrimack has won only one season series so far (UConn). »»Brett Seney, (3g, 11a) Jace Hennig, (6g, 7a) and Ludvig Larsson (6g, 6a) are the team's top scorers in league play. »»Craig Pantano is 4-8-2 with a 2.48 goals against average and .912 save percentage in 14 starts against league foes.

SAD-URDAYS

»»Saturdays haven't been too kind for Merrimack this year, as the team is 1-8-3 on the sixth day of the week. »»Comparatively, the team is 5-7-1 on Friday and 1-0-0 on Sunday. They also have won at least four games on Saturday in each of the previous three seasons.

NO SHORT JOKES

»»Merrimack has not allowed a shorthanded goal all season. »»The Warriors are one of eight Division I schools to have not yielded a shorthanded tally and one of two in Hockey East.

PRETTY POWERFUL

»»Merrimack’s power play started the year with several long slumps (1-for-16, 1-for-21) before righting the ship on Nov. 10. »»Since then, the Warrior power play ranks fifth nationally at 26.9 percent (18-for-67). »»Overall on the year, the Warriors rank 14th nationally (21.8). »»Individually, Merrimack boasts three of the conference’s top most productive power play scorers, with Brett Seney ranked second with 17 power play points followed by classmates Jared Kolquist (14, T-4th) and Jace Hennig (13, T-6th).

LOOKING FOR A RALLY

»»Merrimack is 4-10-0 when the opponent scores first this year. »»Since the start of the 2014-15 season, the Warriors have conceded the game’s first goal in 81 games and have just 14 wins in those games (14-56-11, .241 winning percentage). »»Merrimack is also 0-9-0 when trailing after the first period and 1-12-1 when down after 40 minutes this season. »»That one win came on Jan. 5 at UConn, which represented Merrimack's first win when trailing after two periods since a 4-3 overtime win against Maine on Feb. 17, 2017 at home.

THREE OR NOTHING

»»Three has been the magic number in terms of Merrimack goals needed to win games over the last five years. »»This year, Merrimack has been held to two goals or fewer in 16 of 26 games and is winless (0-14-2) when that occurs compared to 7-1-2 when lighting the lamp three-plus times. »»Over the last four seasons, Merrimack is 42-4-8 (.852) when scoring 3+ goals, compared to 9-64-13 (.180) when being held to two goals or fewer.

ROAD WOES

They were 8-7-3 on the road in 2011-12. »»Merrimack has three more goals (32) in 12 home games than it does in 14 road games (27). »»However, the Warriors are 3-2-0 in their last five road games.

GENERAL INFORMATION

3

2017-18 MERRIMACK COLLEGE MEN’S ICE HOCKEY »»The senior class has dominated the scoring so far this year, as their 77 points are 26 more than the next-closest class. »»Merrimack seniors rank ninth nationally in total scoring. »»A senior has recorded a point in all but six games this year. »»The team’s three lead scorers are all seniors, as well.

Game #27 at Maine

HAPPY 100TH!

»»Senior Brett Seney became the 24th player in the program's Division I history to reach 100 career points earlier this year. »»Seney hit the century mark in 120 career contests, averaging just under a point per game for his career to that point (0.83). »»He now ranks 13th nationally in scoring among all active players nationwide and in the top-50 in all-time program history.

POINTS FROM THE POINT

»»Senior Jared Kolquist (4g, 14a) has been among the productive blueliners -- and overall scorers -- on the team. »»Kolquist ranks sixth in Hockey East in points by defensemen (17) and fourth in power play points (14), while nationally he ranks 30th in points per game from blueliners (0.69).

A LITTLE LEAKY

»»Merrimack has allowed three-plus goals 13 times in 26 games, and the team ranks 30th nationally in scoring defense (2.88). »»Merrimack allowed seven goals on Oct. 21 at Minnesota Duluth, marking the first time it has allowed seven-plus goals since a 7-2 loss at Notre Dame on Jan. 15, 2016.

2017-18 Merrimack College Men’s Ice Hockey

KILLER INSTINCT?

»»Merrimack has allowed at least one power play goal in all but nine games and ranks 56th nationally (76.0%). »»At one point, the team allowed a power play goal in six straight games. The longest streak it has had this year without giving up a power play goal has been nine straight penalties.

TIMING TIDBITS

»»Merrimack has a -17 goal margin (28-11) in the second (59th/ NCAA) and ranks last nationally in second-period goals. »»Merrimack has led in 437:20 of the 1584:18 it has played this year, or in 27.6 percent of game time.

NOT ENOUGH DROPS

»»While it's true Merrimack ranks in the bottom third of the country in shots on goal (44th, 28.19), the Warriors also rank just 54th nationally with a shooting percentage of 8.0 percent. »»That isn’t exactly news for the team, either, as the prior five seasons have seen the Warriors struggle in that category on a national scale, no higher than 48th and as low as 57th.

2017-18 MERRIMACK COLLEGE MEN’S ICE HOCKEY Head Coach 13th Season

Game #27 at Maine

The 2009-10 and 2010-11 All-New England Coach of the Year, Mark Dennehy is in his 13th season at Merrimack team in 2017-18. In his more-than decade on campus, Dennehy has completely rebuilt the brand of Merrimack Warrior Hockey, elevating the program from an era that saw it struggle from a competitive standpoint into a Hockey East contender year in and year out The last two seasons have been some of Dennehy’s most masterful behind the bench, as he and his coaching staff have led Merrimack to back-to-back seventh-place finishes in the league standings, which resulted in the Warriors earning home ice in the first round of the Hockey East Tournament in successive seasons. Merrimack has never hosted playoff series in back-to-back years since joining Hockey East prior to this recent run.

Full Name: Birthdate: Hometown: Family: Education:

Dennehy helped guide the Warriors to victories against four teams that eventually played in last year’s NCAA Tournament, including eventual NCAA Frozen Four participant Notre Dame, as well as BU, Cornell and Providence. Merrimack also toppled perennial power Wisconsin on the road for the first time in school history, as well. The team finished 15-16-6 overall on the season, with an 8-8-6 mark in league play, marking their highest win total in Hockey East in four years.

COACHING HISTORY

Dennehy also saw a number of accolades for his student-athletes at the conclusion of 2016-17, with goaltender Collin Delia earning a spot on the Hockey East All-Star Third Team; he also earned AllNew England accolades, while 2017 graduate Hampus Gustafsson was named the recipient of the Joe Tomasello Unsung Hero Award. Gustafsson was also named the program’s first All-American in four years after earning CoSIDA Academic All-America Third Team honors. Delia, meanwhile, signed a professional contract with the Chicago Blackhawks in the summer of 2017; he was also named a finalist for the presitgious Hockey Humanitarian Award. In 2015-16, Dennehy’s efforts helped the team start and finish the season strong en route to posting its highest finish in the league standings (seventh) in three years. Merrimack also advanced to the quarterfinal round of the Hockey East Tournament for the second year in a row and 20th time in school history.

THE DENNEHY FILE

Following an up-and-down first half of the 2016-17 season, Dennehy helped right the ship in the second half thanks to a historic eight-game unbeaten streak -- the second-longest such streak in the Division I era -- that propelled the Warriors to their eventual seventh-place finish in the league standings. Along the way, Merrimack made history with a series sweep of then-top-ranked Boston University, marking the first time ever that the Warriors swept BU in any regular season series in addition to their back-to-back topplings of a No. 1-ranked team. Shortly afterward, the Warriors secured a series victory against Boston College after defeating the Eagles on the road for the first time in nearly 20. Altogether, Merrimack secured series victories over both BC and BU for the first time ever as part of that impressive eight-game unbeaten streak last winter.

In 2014-15, Dennehy led a team that was comprised of 10 freshmen to an eight-win improvement from the previous season. Merrimack soared out of the gate, posting a 10-5-2 record in its first 17 games to account for the team’s best record at the end of the first half since 2011-12. With 10 wins in 15 tries, Dennehy also led Merrimack to its second-quickest start to a 10-win season since joining Hockey East. Dennehy reached the 100-win milestone during the 2012-13 campaign, one that saw the Warriors contend from start to finish and was highlighted by the team occupying first place in Hockey East the latest into a season since the Warriors joined the conference. In 2011-12, Dennehy’s squad claimed yet another piece of history after earning its first-ever No. 1 national ranking in school history thanks to a 9-0-1 start to the year. Merrimack was also ranked nationally every week for the first time ever, including an appearance in the top 10-for a span of 17 straight weeks. After falling in three games in the Hockey East Quarterfinals, Merrimack narrowly missed a second consecutive berth in the NCAA Tournament.

He was a part of one of the quickest rebuilding processes in the history of college hockey. The UMass team advanced to the finals of the 2003 Hockey East Tournament in just the third season under Cahoon and his staff. Prior to his position at UMass, Dennehy worked for Cahoon at Princeton from 1994-99. He helped the Tigers to three consecutive ECAC ‘Final Five’ tournaments in Lake Placid. In 1997-98, Dennehy contributed toward Princeton’s first ever ECAC championship and only NCAA appearance in the long and distinguished history of the program. From there, he became the head coach at Fairfield University for the 1999-2000 campaign before joining ‘Toot’ again at UMass.

MARK DENNEHY

A native of Dorchester, Massachusetts, Dennehy helped Boston College win three Hockey East regular season titles and played on the 1989-90 Hockey East Championship team and was a part of three NCAA qualifying teams, including the 1990 team that advanced to the Frozen Four at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. He then went on to play a season in Britain’s elite league for the Ayr Raiders in 1991-92. Dennehy parlayed that into a tryout with the Fort Wayne Comets in the IHL before trading in his skates for a whistle.

Dennehy resides in Andover, Massachusetts, with his wife Heather and three daughters, Kelsey, Kielan, and Caroline.
