THE PARTICULARS

»»After a nearly seven-month break, the Merrimack College men’s ice hockey team will open the 2018-19 season within the friendly confines of Lawler Rink when they play host to Lake Superior State for a two-game set starting Saturday (Oct. 6) night, with puck drop set for 7 p.m. The game will be the first behind the bench for first-year head coach Scott Borek, who was named the eighth head coach in program history in April.

ALL-TIME VS. LAKE SUPERIOR STATE

»»Merrimack and Lake Superior will meet for only the third and fourth time ever and first time in over 20 years when the Lakers make their first-ever trip to Lawler Rink. »»The prior two meetings between the two schools took place in late March of the 1988 postseason, one that was particularly memorable for the Warriors. Playing as a Division I independent school, Merrimack won that year's ECAC Division II title as part of its best season in the Division I era, winning a school-record 34 games along the way and eventually earning an at-large berth in the NCAA Division I Tournament. »»The Warriors reached the national quarterfinals after a stunning two-game aggregate series win against Northeastern and drew Lake Superior State on the road. Merrimack won the first game by a 4-3 score before ultimately dropping the series to a Lakers team that eventually went on to win the national championship.

‘MACK FACTS

»»Plenty of new faces abound for a Merrimack squad that ushers in a new era in 2018-19. »»The Warriors, who reached their third Hockey East Tournament Quarterfinals in four years last winter, will look to replace a seven-player senior class that combined for 56 wins over their four years, not to mention their top-four scorers from last year's team. »»An infusion of new talent -- 10 newcomers overall -- will help make that transition a smooth one for first-year head coach Scott Borek, who takes over the reigns of the program with lofty goals after spending the last 16 years on the coaching staffs at New Hampshire and Providence, qualifying for 13 NCAA Tournaments while capturing five Hockey East regular season titles and one tournament championship in that span. »»Senior Michael Babcock will serve as team captain alongside classmates Derek Petti and Alex Carle, a well as junior Johnathan Kovacevic. »»Merrimack's 34-game schedule features 17 at home with bouts against four NCAA Tournament teams, including 2017 national champion Denver.

LAKE SHOW

»»Lake Superior State is coming off a 10-win season last winter (10-22-4) that included an 8-17-3 mark in the WCHA. The Lakers did not qualify for the postseason. OFFENSE STARTING FRESH

»»Merrimack will look to buck a trend from the past five years that has seen the team struggle in overall scoring. »»Merrimack finished last year ranked 53rd nationally in scoring offense and 10th in Hockey East averaging 2.24 goals/game. »»Since finishing the 2010-11 season ranked fifth nationally in scoring offense (3.67), Merrimack has finished no higher than 35th in that category in any of the six following seasons, falling as low as 57th (1.88). »»Merrimack also finished last year ranked 57th nationally with a shooting percentage of 7.6 percent. Over the last six seasons, the Warriors have struggled in that category on a national scale, ranking no higher than 48th and as low as 57th.

THE REPLACEMENTS

»»One of the key storylines to start the season will be goal-scoring, and understandably so. »»The Warriors did, after all, graduate their top-three scorers and lose another as a graduate transfer. »»Altogether, the team brings back just one 20-point scorer from the bunch. But with the continued development of some of last year's rising juniors and sophomores, and an infusion of exciting new talent, Merrimack's offense could be in line to surprise its foes in terms of its offensive capabilities.

SWEET, SWEET SAMI

»»Junior Sami Tavernier could be primed for a huge junior season after trending in that direction last winter. »»The Morzine, France, native has been one of the most productive offensive players for Merrimack over his first two seasons. »»He recorded a career-high 21 points in 36 appearances last year, scoring eight goals while adding 13 helpers. »»Tavernier led the team in shots on goal with 91, as well. »»His sophomore campaign was highlighted by two game-winning goals, one against UConn and one against UMaine in overtime on the road.

»»Michael Babcock, senior captain, has been one of the team's grittiest and most intelligent forwards over his tenure and brings an energetic presence regardless of the situation, playing valuable minutes on the penalty kill where he has especially shined in his career. He was one of eight players to appear in all 37 games added three points. »»He scored one of the biggest goals of his career in the playoffs, shorthanded, at UMass Lowell in an upset win on the road. »»Classmate Derek Petti, an assistant captain, also took the ice in all of Merrimack’s 37 games last year, finishing the year with a career-high in shots on net with 85. »»One of the team's top returning power forwards, Petti finished with nine points (2g, 7a) and also contributed defensively as well, blocking 31 shots. Making him more valuable is his prowess on the faceoff dot, where he won 52.3 percent of his draws.

THE REST OF THE GANG

»»Returners Tyler Irvine, Tyler Drevitch and Patrick Kramer all will look to contribute more as rising juniors, as the trio combined for 12 points altogether last year. »»Rising sophomores Jackson Bales and Laine McKay will also look to add to their rookie year contributions as both were regulars in the lineups, appearing in 33 games combined.

THE OUTLOOK

»»While graduating three mainstays on the blue line from last year, the Warriors do bring back plenty on defense that should keep them competitive and rock solid on the back end night in and night out. »»Merrimack's 2.84 team scoring defense ranked in the top-half nationally and seventh in Hockey East last year.

JOHNNY ON THE SPOT

»»Junior Johnathan Kovacevic has not only been one of the most productive blueliners from an offensive standpoint, but is also one of the team's top overall defensive defensemen. »»The 2017 Winnipeg Jets third round NHL Draft selection will look to keep rising as he enters his first season as an upperclassman while serving as assistant captain for the first time. »»Kovacevic appeared in 34 games for the Warriors last winter, tallying 17 points on two goals and 15 assists, representing another season with 15-plus points from the blue line. »»He also posted a career-high in shots (50) while blocking 20.

CARLE! GOOD TO SEE YOU!

»»Senior and assistant captain Alex Carle will also be a key contributor for the Warriors on defense. »»The Anchorage, Alaska, native appeared in 26 contests, recording four points (1g, 3a) while adding 21 shots. »»The slick-skating, puck-moving defenseman blocked 15 shots and will look to conclude his career with a memorable campaign from the blue line.

ROUNDING OUT THE REAR

»»Sophomore Dominic Dockery led all newcomers last year with 28 appearances, finishing with a +1 rating that was the best figure by a defenseman. He also fired 26 shots on goal and added four blocked shots. »»Junior Ryan Cook saw action in a career-high 19 games last year, netting his first two collegiate goals while placing 22 shots on target. On the other end, he added 18 blocked shots. »»Sophomore Simon Lööf showed flashes in the second half last year when he appeared in seven games. »»He could be a sleeper as a potential emerging star from the back end, while junior Jeff Solow will look to contribute in his second full season with the program.

NET GAINS

»»Merrimack returns all three goaltenders from last winter. »»Senior Craig Pantano had a breakout junior season that saw him post a .915 save percentage thanks to 688 saves and finished with nine games with 30 or more saves last season. »»Pantano finished the year ranked 25th nationally in save percentage and 24th in goals against average (2.33). »»Classmate Drew Vogler will look to round back into the form that made him one of the league's best goaltenders at the end of his freshman season in 2016. »»Vogler finished with 257 saves over the course of 10 appearances last year, with his highlight of the year being a 20-save outing to help Merrimack earn a win against Maine. »»Sophomore Logan Halladay rounds out the goaltending trio, and after getting his first taste of college hockey goaltending action will be ready to take the next steps if called upon.

2018-19 MERRIMACK COLLEGE MEN’S ICE HOCKEY

2018-19 Merrimack College Men’s Ice Hockey

Game #1 vs. Lake Superior State

PRETTY POWERFUL (NORMALLY)

»»Merrimack's power play was among the best in the nation for much of last year, consistently ranking as a top-20 unit nationally through the first five months of the season until slumping toward the end of the year. »»Merrimack's power play had reached as high as eighth on the season in the national ledger before ultimately finishing the year as the 30th-best power play team in the country, converting 27 of 144 chances (18.8 percent). »»Individually, Merrimack boasted four of the conference’s top most productive power play scorers last year, with Brett Seney ranked fifth with 18 power play points followed by classmates Jared Kolquist (15, T-6th) and Jace Hennig, as well as current junior Sami Tavernier (14, T-9th). »»Seney and Hennig also ranked fifth and 10th, respectively, in Hockey East with seven and five power play goals. Seney also ranked 10th in the league with two short-handed points. »»The Warriors finished the year with two short-handed strikes, including one that came in the series clincher on the road against UMass Lowell in the Hockey East Tournament.

KILLER INSTINCT?

»»Merrimack's penalty kill, by its standards, was below average last year, owning just a 76.4-percent kill rate that ranked 54th nationally while the team allowed at least one power play goal in all but 14 games on the season. »»At one point, the team allowed a power play goal in six straight games. The longest streak it had last year without giving up a power play goal was nine straight penalties. »»Merrimack had gone its first 26 games without giving up a short-handed goal and was one of eight teams left in the country to go that late in the year without allowing a shorty. »»Oddly enough, Merrimack's season ended in overtime at Boston College in the Hockey East Quarterfinals on a shorty.

NOTES & NOTABLES FIRST IS THE WORST?

»»Merrimack was 5-9-1 in the first of back-to-back games in every weekend series it has played this year. »»Merrimack was also just 3-4-4 when leading after the first period last year; in the three previous seasons combined, the Warriors were 21-3-1 when leading after 20 minutes.

30 FOR 13

»»Brett Seney '18 surpassed the 30-point milestone last year while wrapping up a remarkable four-year career. »»He became the first Warrior with back-to-back 30-point seasons since Chris Barton '11 (38-39) and Stephane Da Costa (4545) did so in 2009-10 and 2010-11.

AGAINST THE LEAGUE

»»Merrimack went 10-16-2 against Hockey East teams last year and was outscored by a 78-59 margin (-19). »»Merrimack won just two regular season series (UConn, UNH).

SAD-URDAYS

»»Saturdays were not too kind to Merrimack last year, as the team finished just 3-11-3 on the sixth day of the week.

THREE OR NOTHING

»»Three has been the magic number in terms of Merrimack goals needed to win games over the last five years. »»Last year, Merrimack was 1-18-2 when scoring twice or less compared to 11-3-2 when lighting the lamp three-plus times. »»Before its win at UMass Lowell on March 2, Merrimack's last win when scoring two goals or fewer was a 2-0 shutout win at Wisconsin on Nov. 19, 2016. »»Since 2014-15, Merrimack is 46-6-8 (.833) when scoring 3+ goals, compared to 10-68-13 (.181) when scoring two or less.

ROAD WOES

»»Merrimack was just 6-14-2 away from Lawler Rink last year, which actually represented its best road record since a 6-13-1 mark in 2014-15. »»Merrimack's last season with a winning road record was in 2011-12, when it finished 8-7-3 on the road.

TERRIBLE TWOS

»»There was something weird about the middle period last season, which was a particular struggle for the Warriors. »»Merrimack finished with a -19 goal margin (39-20) in the second stanza last year, a figure that ranked 57th nationally. »»Merrimack also ranked second-to-last nationally with just 20 second-period goals all year.

LEADS HAD AND LEADS LOST

»»Merrimack had a lead in just 582:59 of the 2284:34 it played all of last year. »»Broken down further, the Warriors held a lead in 25.52 percent of game time during the 2017-18 season.

A SURE THING

»»Since the 2014-15 season, Merrimack is 40-0-8 when holding a lead after two periods of play. »»The last time the team squandered a two-period lead and lost was on Nov. 30, 2013, at Yale; in that game, Merrimack had a 1-0 lead after 40 minutes before falling in overtime, 3-2.

THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME

»»Merrimack finished 6-7-2 at Lawler Rink last season (.467). »»The Warriors have posted a winning record there in eight of the last 11 years.

IRON WARRIORS

»»Rising senior Michael Babcock represents the Warriors' iron man, leading all players with 111 appearances over his career. »»Classmate Derek Petti will be the next one to hit the century mark when he skates up for his first game this year. He is at 99 so far. »»Other Warriors who have 100 career games in their sights include graduate transfer Matt McArdle (83) and senior Alex Carle (82).

NEVER HAVE I EVER

»»Merrimack has played all but two of the 60 DI schools in the country. »»The two schools Merrimack has never faced are Mich. Tech and Penn State.

IT'S IN YOUR BLOOD

»»Merrimack has plenty of familial ties to the National Hockey League, as one current Warrior has a brother that previously skated for an NHL franchise. »»Senior Alex Carle's brother, Matt Carle, played 12 seasons with four different NHL franchises before retiring in 2016. »»And interestingly enough, Alex's other brother -- David -- took over the reigns at the University of Denver during the offseason. The two brothers will go head-to-head when the Pioneers come to Lawler in late December.

2018-19 Merrimack College Men’s Ice Hockey

Game #1 vs. Lake Superior State

»»Merrimack was also 1-11-0 when trailing after the first period and 2-17-1 when down after 40 minutes this season. »»Its lone rally from a first-period deficit last year was at UMass Lowell on March 2, while its two wins when down after two periods were against UConn (Jan. 5) and UMass Lowell (March 2).

2018-19 MERRIMACK COLLEGE MEN’S ICE HOCKEY

Game #1 vs. Lake Superior State 2018-19 Merrimack College Men’s Ice Hockey

Scott Borek was named the eighth head coach of the men’s ice hockey program in April of 2018. Borek arrived in North Andover with 33 years of collegiate coaching experience, including eight as a head coach. Borek has spent the last 16 years as a Hockey East associate head coach, qualifying for the NCAA Tournament 13 times, while capturing five Hockey East regular season championships and one tournament championship. Over that time span, he has recruited 12 All-Americans, 16 student-athletes who played in the NHL and 18 Hockey East AllConference honorees. Serving as the associate head coach at Providence since 2015, Borek’s responsibilities included oversight of recruiting, team defense and the penalty kill. This season, the Friars’ defense was second in Hockey East and seventh nationally, while the penalty kill also was second in the league and sixth nationally. Providence advanced to the NCAA Tournament in all three seasons with Borek on the coaching staff. Before Providence, Borek spent 13 seasons as the associate head coach at the University of New Hampshire. Serving as the recruiting coordinator while overseeing the team’s forwards and power play units, Borek helped guide the Wildcats to nine NCAA Tournament appearances, a trip to the 2003 Frozen Four NCAA Championship game, one Hockey East Tournament title, and four Hockey East Tournament Championship game appearances. Prior to joining Dick Umile’s staff at UNH, Borek was the head coach at New England College in 2001-02. He also spent five seasons as the head coach of Lake Superior State from 1996-01, following a one-year stint there as Associate Head Coach under current Notre Dame head coach Jeff Jackson. As the Lakers’ head coach, he was named the CCHA Coach of the Year in 2000 and was a Spencer Penrose Award Finalist, given to the Division I National Coach of the Year. Before Lake Superior State, Borek was also the head coach at Colby College from 1993-96 and was a finalist for the Division III Coach of the Year award in 1994. Borek’s coaching career began as a student assistant at Dartmouth College, after he sustained a career-ending neck injury during his sophomore campaign.
