We would like to start off by thanking all at Birmingham City Council, the local NHS, West Midlands Police, West Midlands Fire Authority and most of all, the many contributing businesses who all have provided their support in publishing this community monthly magazine. We would also like to personally thank all our staff members for their continued hard work in making sure the magazine is printed and distributed on time. November is a month of remembrance: armistice day is commemorated on the 11th to signify the end of World War 2. Additionally this month also hosts bonfire night on the 5th with many vibrant firework displays taking place.

Burglary Protect your home against opportunist burglars by remembering to ‘Lock up, Lights on, Keys safe’ this winter. The dark evenings can provide perfect cover for a sneak-in burglar who spots an open window in an unoccupied room; sees your valuables through open curtains or blinds; or tries their luck with an unlocked door while you’re distracted by fireworks.

They may also offer to carry out property maintenance – often asking for cash in advance without ever undertaking any work •If you need work done at your home, get several written quotes from reputable firms before making a decision •Never feel pressured to allow an unexpected caller access to your home. Call their company from the number in your telephone directory – not the one on their business card. And remember, there is no such organisation as the ‘Water Board’

•Bring tools inside if you do not have a shed or garage •Mark your property with your postcode and house number - this makes stolen property easier to trace and it can be positively identified as yours •Regularly check fences and gates are in good repair and check for any overgrown areas where someone could hide •Visit Home Office approved website www.securedbydesign.com for a range of security products which have been awarded the ‘Police Preferred Specification’ status, or visit www.soldsecure.com for products approved by the Master Locksmiths Association. For general advice on keeping safe this winter, click on general advice above. Asian Gold •Keep all jewellery and other valuables in a safety deposit box – your bank can provide suitable advice. •If you prefer to keep your jewellery at home, invest in a suitable safe that is installed to manufacturer’s instructions. •Your insurance company will provide advice as to which type and grade of safe best suits your needs. They will also advise whether your home insurance provides sufficient cover for high-value jewellery. •Keep an inventory of your jewellery. Birmingham has the highest rate of diabetes in the country affecting nearly one in 10 people in some parts of the city (source: Health and Social Care Information Centre). British and South Asians in particular are more prone to having the disease. So what is diabetes? It is a long term condition where blood sugar levels become too high. Normally the amount of sugar in the blood is controlled by a hormone called insulin. In those that have diabetes, the body is unable to break down glucose into energy. This is because there is either not enough insulin to move the glucose or because the insulin that is there does not work properly. Genetic factors, ethnicity, age as well as obesity influence how likely you are to develop diabetes, which can have serious health consequences including heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, blindness and foot ulcers. With early diagnosis and treatment, the risk of developing these complications can be reduced. There are two main types you need to know about â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Type 1 diabetes and Type 2 diabetes. In both cases the symptoms are similar and will include an increased desire to drink as a result of being frequently thirsty, feeling very tired, blurred vision, losing weight and needing to urinate a lot, especially at night. Type 1 diabetes can develop very quickly, in a matter of days or weeks. Where Type 1 is present, the body is attacking and destroying insulin supplies. Insulin producing cells are destroyed too, which results in there being no insulin produced. To keep your glucose levels normal, you will need regular insulin treatment. This mainly comes in the form of insulin injections which can either be given with a syringe or an injection pen. Type 2 diabetes is much more common than Type 1. The body either does not produce the required amount of insulin or the bodyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cells simply do not respond to the insulin, resulting in insulin resistance. Treating Type 2 diabetes is usually achieved through lifestyle choices, such as regular monitoring of blood glucose as well as having a healthy and balanced diet. This is a progressive form of the disease and may eventually result in the need for medication â&#x20AC;&#x201C; usually in tablet form. Some people will also need injectable treatments. To help reduce the risk of diabetes, try to avoid eating junk food as well as high sugar foods. High fat and sugar foods can lead to diabetes as well as obesity. Having fresh fruit and vegetables will make a difference. The second way you can prevent the disease is by exercising regularly. Studies have shown the more outdoor activities you do; the more likely it is that the disease will decrease. Reducing the amount of time you sit down can also minimise your risk of developing diabetes.
