A MESSAGE FROM POLICE CHIEF

WAYNE A. JONES THE CHIEF'S CORNER I would like to take a moment to acknowledge the hard work and dedication you have shown in the face of recent challenges. As law enforcement organizations nationwide have been tested, you have risen to the occasion and have shown what it means to truly serve and protect. Your unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety of our residents and visitors is a testament to each of your bravery and professionalism. I am also incredibly proud of our new promotees! My selections were made with care and consideration, recognizing the critical role police leaders play in building trust and encouraging innovation. These promotions are a reflection of the hard work and dedication of these remarkable leaders, and I have no doubt they will continue to excel in their new roles.

As we head towards the holiday season, it is essential that we continue to support each other. Together, we can maintain our focus on community safety and outreach while also looking after our own physical and mental well-being. Thank you for all that you do, and keep up the phenomenal work!

#YOURMBPD NEWS MBPD Holds its First SWAT School Since 2008 By Christopher Bess

After a 15-year hiatus, five determined Miami Beach police officers completed a grueling threeweek basic Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) school led by MBPD. They were presented with certificates and SWAT pins, and this marked a significant milestone, as this was the first time the course was completed since 2008. The newly graduated SWAT Operators, along with one MBFD SWAT Medic, were praised and celebrated by MBPD command staff, law enforcement officers from neighboring agencies, family, and friends in a ceremony held on Friday, October 27, at the Miami Beach Police Headquarters. Their unwavering dedication and commitment to serving and protecting their community is truly inspiring.

3rd Annual Fallen Hero Softball Tournament The 3rd Annual Fallen Hero Softball Tournament at Brian Piccolo Park was a moving tribute to Sergeant Edward "Eddie" Perez. Sergeant Perez was a hero, who gave his life in service to his community. Members of the MBPD organized this event, and law enforcement officers from across Miami-Dade and Broward Counties were in attendance to play and honor his memory. The event is true testament to the deep respect and admiration his family and friends have for him. Sergeant Perez, who served for 25 years, was a highly decorated veteran of the Miami Beach Police Department, with his most recent assignment being with the MBPD Motor Unit. High regarded for his dedication to public safety, Sergeant Perez’s colleagues described him as a true leader who inspired others to be their best. The tournament was a time for those who knew Sergeant Perez to share stories and memories of his life and service. It was a day of remembrance, but also a day of hope! The sacrifices made by Sergeant Perez are an inspiration to all and a reminder of why we shall never FORGET!

CRIME COLUMN MBPD’s Auto Theft Awareness Campaign According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2022 over 1 million vehicles were reported stolen in the United States, with driver error accounting for around half of those thefts. To assist our residents in keeping their cars safe, the Miami Beach Police Department's Public Information Office has launched a citywide auto theft prevention campaign! This campaign comprises various measures, including social media messaging and door hangers, to educate and inform the public about auto theft prevention.

Door hangers will soon be available inside the roll call room!

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Please take a look at the review below submitted by resident Samantha Gonzalez. “Good afternoon, I am writing to express my gratitude towards the Miami Beach police in recovering my car. My car was stolen October 25 at around 7:00 PM, which I only noticed due to my air tag on my car keys. After running to my parking spot and seeing my car no longer there, I quickly called the police. Within minutes Officer Guillermo Lagos arrived to assist with the search, which little did I know also involved a whole crew of undercover police officers that specialized in auto theft. It’s safe to say I would have never gotten my car back without these individuals. My air tag was a little help, but it was truly the personnel that made the whole recovery happen. Not only were they able to retrieve the car, they were able to do so in under 2 hours. At the recovery scene, everyone was very kind and light hearted, which made the whole situation less stressful for me at the end as well. Once again, thank you very much for your service. I am forever grateful the Miami Beach police. Best, Samantha Gonzalez”

(RC) I.T. DEVICE SECURITY GUIDELINES AND REMINDERS Please remember, if you leave your laptop, cell phone, tablet, or other city device for service by the I.T. Mobile Techs, Police Tech Services, the BWC team, or anyone else, it is essential that you DO NOT leave your network password or access code written down or attached to the device in any way. Various internal and external policies and information security guidelines prohibit this severe security issue. Technicians usually do not need to have your password or access code to maintain your device. We have signed the City of Miami Beach I.T. policy “IT.21.01 - Use of City’s E-mail, Internet, Computer Systems, and Software Access.” This policy covers our responsibilities for access codes and passwords and explicitly instructs us never to write down passwords anywhere that can be compromised. Also, it prohibits us from giving our passwords to anybody, including co-workers, supervisors, technicians, department assistants, friends and/or family. Tips: Passwords or phrases must be 15 characters long and have a numeral, capital letter, and unique character. If you cannot remember your password, you may use an encrypted password vault like 1Password, KeePass, etc. If you can’t access a vault, consider using a passphrase instead of a password. These are much easier to remember. An example passphrase might be #Moonlight-quake-right5. If you are provided a temporary password in order to access your user account, you should change it immediately to a private password that conforms to all the security requirements outlined in the policy. It is always preferable if you can deliver your device directly to the person or unit who will be working on the device. The I.T. Mobile Techs work a split schedule specifically to facilitate availability. As previously stated, technicians can usually access devices with their user or administrator I.D. and password. If, for any reason, a technician requires you to log in to see or correct an issue, this can be performed either in person or over a screen share in Teams. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact anyone from the Police Technical Operations Unit or any of the I.T. Mobile Techs.
