Types of Resistor Networks

When designing passive integration, the flexibility offered by custom Resistor Networks is unparalleled. But arrays are easier to source off-the-shelf. It can be a design constraint if all the resistors in an array are the same value.

Standard networks are more convenient and come with internal configurations for commonly used functions. By externally joining resistor elements of an array, you can either raise or lower the resistance of the entire array.

Parallel

When a circuit has multiple components, you may want to set up parallel resistor networks. These circuits are usually simpler to use than series ones. In fact, it may be easier to understand the concept of parallel resistor networks when you think of them as a network of multiple units. Parallel networks can be grouped together to create different kinds of circuits. But you must be aware that they have a common characteristic: the combined value of all individual resistors in the network is less than the sum of the total resistance of all the individual branches.

If you want to calculate the resistance of a parallel circuit, you need to know the resistance of each branch. Generally, you can calculate the total resistance of the network using Equation 1. The more resistors you connect in a network, the lower the total resistance. Similarly, if you want to calculate the current through a parallel network, the total current will be greater than the average current of the branches. This difference between series and parallel circuits is the basis of the concept of branch current.

Series

A series of resistors is a group of multiple resistors connected in parallel. The resistors in series must all be

smaller than the total resistance of the smallest resistor. A series of resistors is also called a parallel series. The resistors in a series are referred to as "series networks."

Resistor networks have many benefits. In high-frequency circuits, a common substrate can act weirdly and cause crosstalk. By placing them close together, the series resistors prevent this issue. It is not critical on a six -layer board, but in two-layer designs, a series resistor network can solve the issue. Besides being smaller, series resistor networks also prevent terminal problems.
