WHO’S WHO IN LOCAL BUSINESSES

MANAGING BROKER, NEBRASKA REALTY

Arla Meyer ASSOCIATIONS/TITLES: SRES, CDEI, GRI HOMETOWN: LINCOLN, NEBRASKA EDUCATION: GED WITH SOME COLLEGE EDUCATION

How I got into the business: I was no different than a lot of other Realtors. I loved looking at houses and thought I could make a difference for people. I wanted to make that dream a reality for them and do it the right way. Accomplishments or milestones: I have been very fortunate over the years and in this amazing industry. Milestones would be helping create a training program for new agents, watching them grown and come into their own. I have helped numerous families over the years. I have also been a part of passing two legislative laws Realtors in the state of Nebraska to help our industry and be an industry leader. Just last year Governor Rickets appointed me to the Nebraska Equal Opportunity Commission. First job: Burger King. I was a line cook and then a cashier. Walked down the railroad tracks at the age of 15 to get to work. Biggest career break: Becoming a managing broker for my previous company. Meeting Bob Moline and Gene Ward along the way to help make sure I was always on the right track. The toughest part of the job: Trying to make everyone happy at all times.

The best advice I have received: Take care of the people, never focus on the numbers. As long as you take care of the people and do the right thing the numbers will always take care of themselves. About my family: My family is my everything. They are the reason I do all that I do. I have a wonderful daughter who is married with two small children along with a son who is also married with one small child. Something else I’d like to accomplish: To continue the path I’m on and see what presents itself. I would enjoy teaching or speaking at a national level to help or teach others in this industry and help them be the best them they can be. How my business will change in the next decade: This is crazy hard to answer especially after a year of COVID-19. Never did I expect to see all the changes that I have in my career. I would think over the next year we will be hearing more about electrical outlets in garages and affordable housing. I can’t image how technology will be helping or hindering our industry over the next 10 years.

Page 4 • December 3, 2021

Mentor who has helped the most in my career: To pick one would be impossible. I have three that were the biggest influences: Gene Ward, Bob Moline, and Craig Larabee. Outside interests: Family, vacations, and drives to random small towns in Nebraska and see what they have to offer. Favorite vacation spot: Tropical resorts that are all inclusive. If there is a palm tree, then it is a good start. Other careers I would like to try: There is no other career for me. Favorite cause or charity: I am passionate about Josh the Otter, Friendship Home, and St. Monica’s.

Protect the Bottom Line

WHAT TO DO TO COMBAT CYBER THREATS

BY DAVID KUBICEK

JESSICA MURRAY

IT ACCOUNT MANAGER, LUTZ

Cyber threats are becoming more sophisticated every day, so businesses must be continually on guard against this menace. Phishing emails that ask users for their credentials, money, or other items are the biggest cyber threats to businesses, according to Jessica Murray, IT account manager at Lutz. “[Phishing emails] seem to be the most lucrative for hackers,” she said. “That one’s grown the most over the past couple of years, especially since the pandemic started.” Phishing emails are the biggest conduit for malicious code to get

CHRISTOPHER VILIM PRESIDENT, CORETECH

into your system, CoreTech President Christopher Vilim agreed. “[Bad actors] send a blast email or even target your group or industry,” he said. “The second most prevalent [attack] is email accounts getting compromised. If your account isn’t secure, they can gain access to the account, impersonate you, try to manipulate funds, and do a lot of things.” Cybersecurity is a constant game of one-upmanship. Cyber thieves are always looking for new ways to access a firm’s system. “It’s almost a daily evolution in the way they do even phishing attacks,

Ransomware attacks in the banking industry increased by 1318% in 2021.

how they customize that so it looks like [the email] is from someone you know so they can get you to do something,” Vilim said. “Their techniques are becoming more sophisticated.”

Train your team

Firms need to have good controls on their financial systems — such as requiring approval from two people before writing a check or executing a transaction — to ensure that the transaction is valid. The other big threat is ransomware, which will encrypt all the data on a firm’s computer as well as its network. “They can get at your backups, leaving you without anything unless you’re able to restore from somewhere or pay the guys off, which you don’t want to do,” Murray said. Firms should have multi-factor authentication on email and most of their online accounts, so if a bad actor gets a password they can’t access the account, Vilim said. For instance, they wouldn’t have your phone, which has an app with a button on it that allows you to log into the bank site. “Make sure you’re training your people,” Vilim said. “If [the bad actor] gets through your filters and your technology, you’re relying on your people to decide whether to click on a link.” These cyber criminals take great pains to make their phishing emails look as if they’re coming from a legitimate source, someone the employee knows or a company with which the firm

Page 12 • December 3, 2021

does business. For example, a hacker masquerading as a manager may ask an employee to make a financial transaction or to buy $1,500 worth of Apple gift cards and mail them to a particular address. Training is the first line of defense. “You can buy the most sophisticated technology, but it’s really going to come down to the end user and whether or not they can recognize a phishing email because if someone gives away their credentials there’s not much they can do about it,” Murray said. “The bad guys have their information to get in [to the network].” Firms should make sure multi-facet authentication is turned on for virtual private networks [VPN], emails, and all accounts. “[Businesses] should consult and partner with a cybersecurity expert,” said Puja Kandel, principal owner of CMIT in Omaha. “They should also partner with a managed IT service provider company like us and have us maintain the IT infrastructure. If they decide to do it on their own then they should hire a dedicated IT employee and install antivirus and other key software and update the operating system patches on a regular basis.”

Preventative measures

Kandel said small businesses can take several steps to shore up their security. They should provide firewall security for their internet connection, secure their Wi-Fi networks, train employees

recommend tests for end users. A couple of times each month we’ll send out a crafted email to the audience and try to get them to act. This has a two-fold purpose. One, if anyone clicks on it and follows the directions, we know they need more training and two, the staff knows only that [these emails] will come periodically so they will be hypervigilant about what they click on.” Vilim said cybersecurity is becoming tough for businesses to do at a very high level without an IT person or consultant. “Make sure you’ve turned on as much security on your systems as possible, and as quickly as you can make room in your budget to get some assistance with security,” he said.

Getting insured

The trend toward businesses buying cybersecurity insurance has picked up over the past 12 months,

but requirements are becoming stricter. Cyber insurance companies require clients to have more security in place and offer a specified amount of training. Companies that don’t meet those requirements could be charged significantly higher premiums or denied coverage altogether. “Make sure you answer questions on the application accurately,” Vilim said. “If [the insurance company] finds out you misrepresented something, even if

it’s an innocent oversight, they might deny the claim.” The bottom line is that businesses need to plan for cybersecurity in their budgets. “It’s getting worse, not better,” Vilim said. “Your IT budget needs to increase because you’ve got lots of factors in place. The cost of technology is increasing with supply chain and other issues, and the cost of cybersecurity is going up.”

Cornhusker Bank took the time to understand my business strategy. I feel

on how to handle and protect customer information and other vital data by using strong passwords, install antivirus and other key software and operating system patches updates, create a mobile device action plan, regularly backup the firm’s important data and information, control physical access to computers, and create user accounts for each employee. “Businesses should practice cybersecurity guidelines and invest and consider implementation of multifactor authentication such as password protection, biometric and/or facial authentication to avoid all these security problems,” Kandel said. Typically, firms should do a large online training course annually with refreshers quarterly. “Have some tracker to make sure everyone does it,” Vilim said. “You need that quarterly training to keep it at the top of everyone’s mind. I highly

heard and respected by everyone on their team. Their support during the mandatory shutdown was reassuring and gave me the confidence to continue to expand our business. – Somer Krueger, Founder Trios Salon

TECH IN OMAHA

WORDPRESS wizards BEN JACKSON, OMAHA SITE LEADER, VICE PRESIDENT OF SALES, WP ENGINE

Staggering Growth

WORDPRESS GIANT WP ENGINE BUILDS OMAHA HUB WP Engine has been in a position to hire more than 30 new team members at its Omaha “hub” (office) in 2021, and local site leader and Vice President of Sales, Ben Jackson, noted the global WordPress hosting leader is poised to double the size of the staff working out of its new 66,000-square-foot space. That space, within the historic Ashton Building, serves as an anchor for the Millwork Commons development and is already serving as a model for WP Engine’s other hubs throughout the world — from its Austin, Texas corporate headquarters, to its new hub in Limerick, Ireland. “Of course, every company has been affected by the ‘Great Resignation,’” Jackson said. “But our hiring is based on company growth, not backfilling.” In fact, he added that WP Engine is hiring locally in product and engineering to build new offerings, in sales to sell those products, and in support to take care of its diverse customer base. For Omaha’s future hiring, a continuation of a trajectory going back two years (WP Engine acquired Omaha-born Flywheel in 2019), Jackson said new hires will likely fill roles in every team and department at “nearly every level.” This includes sales, support and product engineering, as well as finance, marketing, and technical support. “We have enough room in our current space to double in size over the next two to five years,” he said. Additionally, Jackson emphasized Omaha’s access to a deep talent pool of “great customer-facing roles.”

“Specifically, due to the local diversity and ‘accent-neutral’ range of talent,” he added.

New digs At the time of this writing, of WP Engine’s 1,200 employees worldwide, about 200 people work in the Omaha area. Its space, which spans the third and fourth floors of the Ashton building at 1229 Millwork Ave., can accommodate 400 employees. “Our office in Omaha was ready for occupancy around Memorial Day of 2020; however, due to COVID pushing us all to remote working, we weren’t able to occupy it for more than a year,” Jackson recalled. “We opened it in a limited capacity in early July, and have scaled it up and back, depending on our local COVID restrictions.” Within an 1800s-era furniture warehouse, the hub’s physical quarters also get “rave feedback” on historical features, restored and accented, such as wooden beams, elevator and sliding metal doors, a custom staircase and skylight. “This office is truly a reflection of the people who work here,” Jackson said, when asked about how feedback from employees was integrated into the design of the space. “‘Design matters’ is one of our core values. So, every piece of art you see on the walls around the office was made by someone on our team.” A “social bunch,” Jackson said everything was built around a vibrant core complete with kitchen, bar, lounge and patio.

“There’s no sound dampening in the core area of the office, because we want to invite people to come together and connect in that space,” he said. “But we also have to get work done, which is why we added in sound dampening via carpeting and acoustic ceiling panels, the further you move to the periphery of the building. “The ‘wow’ factor of this space has already led to inspirations to revamp our company headquarters in Austin, as well as the new hub we just opened in Limerick, Ireland,” he said. Its other locations span London, England; Brisbane Australia; San Antonio, Texas; San Francisco, California; and Krakow, Poland.

More than a pretty space Being in the Ashton allows for WP Engine to reside close to what he called the “creative heartbeat” of the city. “Millwork has been thoughtful about maintaining the richness of the local area while carefully adding new attractions to maintain connection to the original use of the area — for creatives and artists,” he said. “We want this to be a space where local creatives gravitate, regardless of their background.” Millwork Commons resides on more than 50 acres of land. It features a collection of retail, housing, event, hospitality and outdoor spaces, as well as 60-plus tenants. “We are truly fortunate to work with all types and sizes of customers — from small businesses to global brands,” Jackson said. In all, WP Engine works with in excess of 175,000 customers and powers more than 1.5 million websites across 150 counties. There is plenty of room to grow, he indicated. “Even with the world going online during COVID, we are still in the early days of unprecedented digital transformation around the world,” Jackson explained. “Seventy-three percent of the world’s population now uses the internet. But, at the business level, only 16% of global retail

transactions are conducted online and over one-third of American small businesses still don’t have a website.” WordPress, however, accounts for a reported 43% of the web and represents the leading content management system in the world. “The WordPress economy is estimated to be $635.5 billion by the end of this year,” Jackson said. “That’s over a half a trillion dollars globally.” Citing International Monetary Fund data, he added: “To put that in perspective, if WordPress were a country, it’s economy would rank 39th in the world.” And, Jackson asserted, WP Engine is at the forefront of such staggering growth. “WP Engine is the leader in managed WordPress hosting, more than twice as large as the next three competitors combined, and we host more of the top 200,000 websites than anyone else,” he said. One of its core values, “Committed to give back,” could very well apply to its new partnership with Metropolitan Community College. Jackson indicated the partnership is about more than connecting MCC students to its internships and job openings. “We have larger plans to help with curriculum advisory, workshops for student projects, co-located events, summer youth camp involvement … all of which will give their students the real-world tools, resources and experience they need to land a job upon graduation,” he said, adding that MCC is one of its co-tenants. MCC’s Associate Vice President for Community and Workforce Education, Gary Girard, said by way of Jackson that the collaboration has the “potential to provide ready access to skilled talent right in our community.” Living its values, WP Engine’s Omaha hub is also active with Avenue Scholars, Open Door Mission, Girls Inc., Latino Center of the Midlands, Black and Pink Omaha, Siena Francis House, the Women’s Center for Advancement, Code Crush, Youth Emergency Services and several other local nonprofits.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

CULTIVATING culture NATASHA PARTRIDGE-BUTLER, FOUNDER, PEAR TREE PERFORMING ARTS

Improving Access to the Arts

PEAR TREE PERFORMING ARTS REOPENS AFTER RENOVATION It’s showtime for the participants of Pear Tree Performing Arts. The organization will open its doors this month after a four-year, multi-milliondollar historic renovation project.

The Beginning The organization was founded in 2010 by Lawrence Butler and Natasha Partridge-Butler, a husband-and-wife duo that wanted to provide artistic opportunities for youth who may not have the means or access to quality, affordable lessons. “Our mission is to nurture and cultivate a sense of culture, confidence, community and creativity in youth through the performing arts,” PartridgeButler said. “To do that, we provide an array of dance and theatre arts classes at various levels and for ages 2 1/2 and older. We also partner extensively with organizations and businesses that share our mission to ensure students have performance opportunities, see live shows, and work with professionals in creative industries.” Pear Tree Performing Arts started in the Benson Community Center and in 2013, moved to its current location on 48th Street and NW Radial

Highway. In 2017, a renovation project was launched to add more space and increase the capacity of the center’s programming.

The Renovation The project was originally slated to finish in less than a year, but funding fell through, and there were a lot of hoops to jump through. Finally, in 2020 construction began. The building, which was placed on the National Register of Historic Places four years ago for being one of the original Hinky Dinky grocery stores, has a lot of history to it. “There have been a host of other businesses to occupy the space before us, and it is always interesting to hear stories of what the community remembers being in the building,” Partridge-Butler said. “We were able to maintain the original ornate tin tile ceiling and trim. “We kept the majority of the wood flooring in the ballet studio. The 8,800-square-foot facility updates include a 900-square-foot stage, complete audio-visual updates, multimedia area, additional classroom space and restrooms, efficient HVAC systems, solar panels, and the 1,200-square-foot Hitchcock Ballet Studio. We can’t wait to invite students and the community back in.”

CAREER REFLECTIONS

EXECUTIVE q&a

Q&A with Denise Natali-Paine VICE PRESIDENT, COX BUSINESS

Q. Mission/Core Values of your company A. Cox is a family-centric business with the mission to connect our customers to the people and things they care about most. Our values are centered on being good citizens of the communities we serve and our commitment to shape a better world through innovation, engagement and corporate responsibility. Q. What is your favorite quotation and by whom? A. My favorite quote is “Always be relevant.” My commanding officer told me that when I was a new Intelligence officer at my first assignment overseas. His point was to ensure that what I bring to the conversation makes sense and solves problems. I have come to truly appreciate the wisdom in those words as I have grown into my career and life. Q. What do you love most about the Omaha metro? A. I love the vibe of Omaha the most. As a newcomer to the Midwest, the vibe of being nice, authentic, kind and supportive is truly special. Omaha surprised me with its upbeat tech environment and the many green spaces in town. I feel very welcome here and absolutely LOVE Omaha! Q. If you went on a personal pilgrimage, where would you go/what would you do? A. I would take my dad back to Korea. He was in the Korean War and as he is aging, he talks often of his military service. He was lucky in that his younger brother was also stationed with him and they shared many stories with me. I’d love to retrace his steps with him and bring new color to these precious memories. He is the only remaining member of his family and it would mean so much to him. Q. What historical figure would you most like to be mentored by? A. Sadly, she is now a historical figure, yet, Ruth Bader Ginsberg would make a tremendous mentor. Her tenacity, resilience, keen mind and commitment to justice are extraordinary. As a leader, personal courage and commitment to serve the greater interest are paramount. I would love to be mentored by such a strong and inspiring woman. Q. Who would you like to trade places with for one month? A. I would trade places with Pete Doctor of Pixar. I’d be in heaven, creating and directing some of the most incredible animation and illustration work in the world. I would use this time to learn techniques and understand how Pixar translates the creative process into the production of truly phenomenal films. Q. Describe your perfect day: A. My perfect day begins with enjoying a beautiful sunrise with a cup of coffee and my dog. I love the fall weather and there is nothing more special than a long horseback ride enjoying the crispness of the day. Brilliant sunset to savor before a terrific dinner with my husband. That is the perfect day. Q. What Human Virtue do you consider most important? Why? A. I believe that empathy is the most important virtue because it is the root of our humanity. Empathy is an enormous concept and encompasses our cognitive, emotional and compassionate selves. When we approach our fellow man, our environment, and our animal friends with empathy, we act with responsibility, gratitude, and harmony. Q. What did you most dream of being when you grew up? A. I dreamed of becoming either a military officer or a cartoonist. I have realized both dreams, although I am holding out for that Pixar gig. Q. What life experience has strengthened you most? A. In the military, I served in several combat and humanitarian missions which were difficult physically and emotionally. Those types of experiences shape you by enabling you to recognize your own strengths, build trust in your ability to lead and execute in difficult environments, and create real bonds with your buddies. My closest friends are still those with whom I served.

Continued Focus On Diversity

GREATER OMAHA CHAMBER

OMAHA’S WORKFORCE CAN PROVIDE OPPORTUNITY FOR ALL DIVERSITY & INCLUSION As part of the third annual Conference on Opportunity, Diversity and Equity, we released results from a diversity and inclusion assessment conducted through area businesses. The participating companies are members of the Chamber’s Employer Coalition for CODE (Commitment to Opportunity, Diversity and Equity). This year’s assessment received 3,735 individual responses. The assessment results showed that overwhelmingly individual respondents valued diversity and inclusion themselves (94% favorable) and indicated that their organization has a vision or mission statement for its diversity and inclusion initiative (90% favorable). However, these responses did not show that organizations were consistently recognizing or rewarding contributions toward diversity and inclusivity (49% favorable). “Area employers showed progress from last year, but there is always work to be done” said Bianca Harley, senior director, diversity and inclusion at the Greater Omaha Chamber, “We’re glad that so many respondents felt their organizations had a mission guiding their diversity and inclusion practices. Now our area employers can focus on setting goals and acting toward achieving them. That’s the next milestone.” One important takeaway from the assessment is that the Omahaarea workforce, from individual contributors to executive-level leaders, is still disproportionately represented by white individuals at 86% of top leadership positions and 82% of individual contributors. “That continues to be one of our region’s biggest opportunities,” said Todd Johnson, senior vice president of economic development for the Greater Omaha Chamber, “We can expand our available workforce by increasing minority participation across all our companies and industries. There is untapped potential across our entire region. Creating opportunities for everyone to thrive will elevate the entire workforce.” “There are entire communities who have, previously, been denied access to our economic prosperity,” noted Harley, “We need to keep breaking down those barriers.” Omaha’s unemployment continues to fall to record levels, with

September data showing a 2.1% unemployment rate in the region. While this is good news for people in the job market, it makes filling open positions difficult for employers looking to grow and expand to meet demand. Researchers at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln projected a 6,000 person expansion of the labor force that could ease that tension. That’s would be welcome continued growth for a region that has already added more than 11,000 workers in 2021 than it had in 2020. “What we have to do is continue to build pipelines between the employers and the available workforce,” said Ana Lopez Shalla, senior director of workforce development with the Greater Omaha Chamber. “We are working to increase access to these employment opportunities for everyone in our community who wants to go to work. This means focusing on internships, on-the-job training, diversity and inclusion initiatives and other programs that open the doors of prosperity for everyone.”

Shopping local is a great way to focus on supporting our hard-working small business owners. Plus, supporting small invigorates the local economy. For every dollar spent at a small business, approximately 67 cents stays in the local community. So, when you support small businesses, you can help create a big impact. zabuni SPECIALTY COFFEE AUCTION KENYAN BUILDS COFFEE BRIDGE TO CENTRAL NEBRASKA

LABAN NJUGUNA (PRONOUNCED jo-GO-na) WHO CO-FOUNDED AND RUNS A COFFEE DISTRIBUTION BUSINESS IN CENTRAL NEBRASKA. ZABUNI SPECIALTY COFFEE AUCTIONS CONNECTS COFFEE FARMERS IN NJUGUNA’S NATIVE KENYA WITH THE U.S. COFFEE MARKET, THE WORLD’S LARGEST.

GRAND ISLAND — The question rolled around in Laban Njuguna’s mind. Coffee? Really? Upend his life to sell Kenyan coffee? In Nebraska? He daydreamed about the idea as he hauled grain for farmers in the Grand Island area. It spilled out in long latenight conversations with his wife, Cora. Friends and family grew coffee in his native Kenya. He lived in the United States, the largest consumer of coffee in the world. Njuguna’s logical side told him that he knew nothing about the coffee industry, much less international trade. But his heart spoke up, too. He knew Kenyans who struggled to eke out a living from a few acres of coffee trees. And he knew Nebraska, this place that welcomed him. Ultimately, one thought spoke loudest: What if I can be a bridge, doing good

for both places? Today, that bridge is Zabuni Specialty Coffee Auction, a Grand Island company distributing Kenyan coffee in the United States. It’s guided by a mission to provide Kenyan farmers direct access to the U.S. coffee market, allowing many to earn a living income for the first time. In a way, the one-of-a-kind Nebraska business began the day Njuguna (pronounced jo-GO-na) bumped into Cora Huenefeld at a graduation party in Bellevue. Cora was a high-school math teacher in Omaha. Njuguna was an immigrant pursuing an education, as his older siblings had done. He intended to return home to Nairobi, the lush, hilly, capital city of Kenya where he grew up. A city that boasts 4.4 million residents and incredible weather — the daily high temperatures never swings too far from 75 degrees. Instead, he went to the party, where

Cora caught his eye. They married in 2007 and eventually made their home in Aurora, miles from the farm where she grew up. Instead of Nairobi, Njuguna made a life in Nebraska. Now 42, sitting in his office overlooking downtown Grand Island, Njuguna swivels his chair to face Cora with a mischievous look. “I remember asking her: ‘How did you grow up around here? There’s nothing to do.’” He was a big city guy, at ease among crowds of people and hair-raising traffic. “...But, a caveat,” he adds, holding up his index finger. “Today, I think my wife would leave this part of the world before I would. I love it here. For me, Nebraska values, Nebraska Nice, It’s a real thing.” When he first moved here, Njuguna hauled grain and then started his own ag trucking company. One day, he asked a local coffee shop owner what she knew

Page 24 • December 3, 2021

about his home country’s crop. “It’s expensive,” she said. “The supply is inconsistent.” He wondered: Why is Kenyan coffee so costly while its farmers are so poor? His eyes saw injustice in the historical structure of the industry, “a supply chain stacked against the farmers.” Words of encouragement from Njuguna’s 105-year-old grandmother — who still oversees a coffee farm — helped convince the Njugunas to start their unique, mission-based company. “We knew we needed to try something different,” Njuguna said. In the Zabuni business model, farmers consign their coffee to the company, which ships and stores it in its climatecontrolled warehouse, cutting out layers of middlemen. Zabuni then sells the unroasted coffee in bulk by online auctions, or in-person auctions in the company conference room.

Zabuni never owns the product, but instead provides the platform for exchange and links buyer and seller. “We’re kind of like eBay,” Njuguna said. For farmers, the increase in profit is huge. According to Njuguna, a 132-pound bag of coffee might sell for about $250 in Kenya, with the farmer receiving 20 percent of the price. Zabuni sells coffee for $500 or more a bag, and 85 percent of that goes to the farmer. “That can be life-changing,” he said. Njuguna has one clear advantage in the Kenyan coffee business: Although he grew up middle class, he has coffee farmers in his family. He knows the hardships of that life: Working tiny nonmechanized farms, usually only a handful of acres; picking, drying, and sorting the fruit of the coffee trees by hand; delivering the harvest to the mill. Bad Seed Coffee and Supply in Omaha was already serving Kenyan coffee from an importer in California when its owner, Matt McCrary, met Njuguna. McCrary wanted to work closer with foreign farmers, but didn’t think Bad Seed was big enough. “When he shared a little about his plan, I got really excited. He was bringing my barista dreams to my doorstep.” The company got plenty of help along the way. Dave Taylor, president of the Grand Island Area Economic Development Corporation, traveled with Njuguna to Kenya, to learn and to help build relationships crucial to the venture. When Kenyan visitors came to Grand Island, local businesses offered special rates to house and feed them, and showed them the area, he said. In 2019, Zabuni received a $100,000 forgivable loan using the LB840 economic development program. Company headquarters took shape downtown, in part of a former Sears building transformed into brightly colored offices,

a cupping room, lab and conference room, with a food-registered warehouse beneath. Clean and cavernous, the warehouse can keep thousands of bags at the temperature and humidity that retain coffee’s freshness. Zabuni launched with fanfare late that year, and completed a few online auctions when COVID changed everything. The roasters who make up their primary customer base weren’t traveling; coffee shops closed doors. By then, the couple had four young children, three boys and a girl, whose faces burst from a gallery of 16 black-andwhite photo frames on Njuguna’s office wall. His mother, Jane Murugi Maina, offered serious support during that tough year. “She kept telling me ‘No matter what. Don’t give up.” His mother died of colon cancer over the summer.“So for me, those words are eternal.” The Njugunas began selling roasted coffee, which wasn’t in their business plan. Sales of individual bags exploded locally, giving central Nebraskans a way to support the mission. Buyers include Rise and Grind in Gibbon, which brews Zabuni coffees for its customers. “I like their philosophy and entrepreneurship,” said owner Scott Pickel. Central Nebraska farmers have been among Zabuni’s biggest advocates, including Cora’s family of organic popcorn growers. That’s an underlying connection between his homeland and his new home. Farmers understand farmers, he said. And then there’s the crop itself. “What better way to bring people together than over coffee?” he asked. The Flatwater Free Press is Nebraska’s first independent, nonprofit newsroom focused on investigations and feature stories that matter.
