Raphael Warnock

Raphael Warnock, 51, is the first African American to serve as a senator in Georgia.

He's a Pastor in the church where Martin Luther King officiated, he is committed to social justice and son of a pastor, who was a veteran during the second world war.

“He can break it down intellectually but when it comes to talking about the issues that impact our community – social justice issues, homelessness, healthcare issues, police reform – he comes in the tradition of the Baptist church, which is passionate, engaged. He challenges people to think, to question who are you and, if you say that you are this, what does that mean?” says Cheryl Johnson, a voting engagement activist and community historian.

Nzambi Matee

Nzambi Matee is the founder of the Djenge Makers, a startup that transforms plastic into solid bricks. Plastic waste is a global problem, millions of plastic items are wasted every single day. Not wanting to watch the earth deteriorate, she decided to act in order to counter this massive problem, the Kenyan entrepreneur created a system where it was beneficial for everyone. She takes the plastic waste that companies want to get rid of and mixes it with sand to create a brick that is lighter and stronger. It is then easier for transport and five times

more resistant compared to regular bricks. The new born company now produces 1,500 bricks per day and continues to expand. Recognised for her work, she and her team won the UN Young champions of the world award. - Mathis -

Sarah Thomas

Sarah Thomas was the first woman to officiate a major college football game, the first to officiate a bowl game, and the first to officiate in a Big Ten stadium. In 2015, Thomas was hired as the first full-time female official in NFL history. In February 2021, she became the first woman to officiate in a Super Bowl. Thomas says: "Women don't have to listen to their inner-critic and hold themselves back; they can unleash themselves and reach their best potential if they put their effort into it. That's what I want my daughter to do." Zoé

Maia Chaka

Maia Chaka, who was once just a regular health and PE teacher in a small school in Virginia Beach, is now the first Black woman hired by the NFL to be an on field official. Chaka has been training with the NFL since 2014, and has officiated games in the NCAA's Pac-12 and Conference USA and has also officiated at the professional level in the XFL.

Chaka says: "I am honoured to be selected as an NFL official, but this moment is bigger than a personal accomplishment. It is an accomplishment for all women, my community, and my culture". Maia explains that she has known Sarah Thomas for a while now since they worked in Conference USA together and says "She had already been there three years prior to me. And so as soon as I got the call, and they got when that I was being hired in a Conference USA, she was one of the first officials that called me up and reached out to me". This all happened in March 2021 two months after the announce of Sarah Thomas' history making event. Zoé

From friends to sisters

Julia Tinetti, 31,and Cassandra Madison, 32, were two friends that began telling people that they were sisters after meeting in 2013 since they had a lot of common traits. A recent DNA test surprisingly has confirmed that Cassandra and Julia are biological sisters.

They met working at The Russian Lady restaurant in New Haven, Connecticut, and they quickly became firm friends because of their numerous similarities, they were both adopted from the Dominican Republic as babies, they both have Dominican flag tattoos and they looked so alike that coworkers would mix their names up. It started as an inside joke that they would tell other people that they were sisters but the similarities were so strong that they wanted to check their adoption papers to see if they were but the papers said that they had different mothers. After Madison moved to Virginia she got a DNA test on one of her birthdays and the results didn’t add up. She also met her

father and he said that they put up to adopt another daughter that day. Madison quickly contacted Julia and told her to get a DNA test. The test showed that they’re biological sisters. - Hamish -

Tengah: town of the future

Singapore’s future eco-town Tengah might be your next tourist destination! This wonderful project is led by Cheong Koon Hean, the first woman to lead Singapore’s urban development agency. The idea is to build 42, 000 new homes across five residential districts. It will be the first city with centralized cooling, automated trash collection, a car free town center, cascading vertical gardens, verdant walls and some greenery on the rooftops. They are also developing a roadmap with a goal to eliminate as much carbon emissions in Singapore as possible. This country clearly has the right mindset to move forward as it acknowledged that over 80% of its residents live in urban areas and that therefore a sustainable urban design would be extremely beneficial in regards to climate change. This green building project is something other countries should take as a model to follow when it comes to building on new territory. -Eva-..

Banning

of the bee killer (pesticide)

England recently approved the quick use of a product containing the chemical thiamethoxam due to a virus that contaminated sugar beet seeds. After that temporary use was approved in January, the government has decided to ban the use of this pesticide as scientific studies have shown that the use of these chemicals are the result of the falling numbers of honeybees, wild bees and other animals which pollinate plants. This ban was nearly obtained in 2018, when the EU and UK were faced by the damage these chemicals caused to bees. Why this decision was taken is easily answered as insects in general play a vital role in the food chain. It is also proven that a third of the food we eat relies on pollination done mainly by bees. Milan Wiercx van Rhijn, from the charity Bees for Development said that "If we kill the insects which are the starting blocks in the chain, we'll kill the animals higher up,". His solution to this pesticide problem would be to focus on having "strong, resilient bio-abundance" which is letting things grow properly and "not cutting them down". - Eva -

SPORT & GAMES

2021 Superbowl

On the 7th February, the US stopped to live to follow the biggest annual sport event, the Super Bowl. This year, the Kansas City Chiefs were back at the Super Bowl and went against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The game was opposing two of the best quarterbacks of all time, on one side the young MVP that is playing his second Super Bowl at only the age of 25, and on the other side arguably the “GOAT” who won 6 championships already, he dodged retirement and led its new team to its first Super Bowl since 2003. During the entire game, the Chiefs’ offensive line couldn't resist the pressure and the Chiefs whole offense wasn't at their best. On the opposite side, Tampa’s offense was advancing fast and scored a lot. The final score 31 9, shows perfectly the scenario of the game. Mathis
