W E L C O M E My name is Madison Wilbanks, and I’m a recent graduate of the University of North Alabama with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Architecture and Design.

I’m so glad you’re here! This portfolio is a collection of the projects, experiences, and creative opportunities that have shaped me as a designer. My passion for design grew throughout my time in design school, where I discovered how impactful thoughtful spaces can be. I love creating environments that not only look beautiful but also support, inspire, and improve the lives of the people who use them. My senior year of high school, a mentor challenged me to set a goal. Without hesitation, I said I wanted to visit all 50 U.S. states before graduating college. In March, I accomplished that goal after visiting California and Oregon, my final two states.

Travel has always been an important part of my life. It allows me to experience different cultures, discover new cuisines, and see the world through a different lens. As a designer, there is nothing more inspiring than exploring the architecture, history, and spaces that have influenced generations of great designers.

One of the highlights of my time at the University of North Alabama was studying abroad with the IAD program. Traveling through France, Italy, Portugal, and Spain alongside classmates and mentors gave me the opportunity to experience some of the world's most iconic architecture firsthand. These experiences have broadened my perspective and continue to inspire the way I approach design today.

BEYOND THE STUDIO

OCCUPANT SEATING CAPACITY Gatehouse is designed to accommodate a variety of users and activities within the restaurant and educational spaces.

DESIGN DRIVERS + GOALS EDUCATION Gatehouse is designed to share the story of power in the Shoals. Through small interpretive moments, digital media, and design features inspired by Wilson Dam and the TVA, guests can learn about the region while they dine. The goal is for the space to teach in a subtle and approachable way, giving meaning to the experience beyond the menu.

UNIVERSAL DESIGN The restaurant should be welcoming for all guests. Wide pathways, accessible seating options, clear circulation, and thoughtful spatial transitions make the environment easy to navigate. The goal is to create a dining experience that is comfortable and functional for people of all ages and abilities.

EXPERIENCE A meal at Gatehouse is meant to engage the senses. The open flame kitchen, digital gallery wall, lighting effects, and subtle soundscapes all work together to create a memorable atmosphere. The goal is for guests to feel immersed in the concept f rom the moment they enter.

HERITAGE The design stays rooted in the identity of Florence and the Tennessee Valley. Colors, textures, and forms reference the power of Wilson Dam, the flow of the river, and the grit of local industry. The goal is for guests to feel connected to the place and its history throughout their visit.

MADISON WILBANKS | FALL 2025 | IAD II 365 | HOSPITALITY STUDIO PROJECT OVERVIEW: This project centers on designing a new restaurant concept for UNA Culinary Arts in a 12,600 square foot existing building located in downtown Florence. The goal is to create a fully developed hospitality environment that blends dining, education, and an immersive guest experience. For this assignment, the restaurant occupies at least 8,000 square feet and includes a special feature that enhances the overall experience for guests.

To support UNA’s academic programs, the design includes two 1,000 square foot classrooms for the Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management departments. The project also requires incorporating immersive or experiential elements that help tell the story behind the restaurant concept. Throughout the design process, ADA guidelines and Universal Design principles were considered to ensure accessibility and comfort for every user. Custom built-in seating was also integrated into the dining area to meet project standards.

This project brings together concept development, technical space planning, and experiential storytelling. The result is a restaurant that not only functions eff iciently and supports UNA’s educational needs but also offers the kind of memorable dining experience that is currently missing in downtown Florence.

CONCEPT STATEMENT: Gatehouse is designed to reflect the energy and power that have shaped the Shoals, especially the influence of Wilson Dam. The idea of movement, flow, and strength guides the atmosphere and layout of the restaurant. At the heart of the space, the open flame kitchen becomes the main feature. Guests can hear the sizzle, see the glow, and feel connected to the cooking process the moment they arrive.

The entry sequence sets the tone for the entire experience. The corridor is f ramed with matching wall features that repeat like the floodgates of the dam. Soft lighting highlights their symmetry and creates a sense of rhythm as guests walk toward the dining room.

The waiting area includes a digital gallery wall that introduces guests to the story of Wilson Dam through motion, sound, and historic imagery. A curved bench inspired by the shape of the dam’s turbines provides comfortable seating and ties back into the concept.

This area turns waiting into a moment of discovery and gives families and younger guests something engaging to explore.

Together, these ideas create a warm and immersive dining experience that feels connected to Florence. Gatehouse brings the history and character of the Tennessee Valley into a modern environment and offers guests more than a meal. It becomes a place where the story of the Shoals is felt through movement, atmosphere, and design.
