Recent and Future Developments Sutton Harbour Sutton Harbour is one of Plymouth’s prime waterfront districts, and this spectacular destination with its picturesque harbour sits in the historic heart of the city.

Sherford 5,500 homes will be built over the next 15 years or so, generating 300-400 construction jobs, plus employment arising from a planned 84,000 sq m of commercial and business space.

Sherford’s new community will shortly be under construction on the edge of Plymouth. Sherford will offer a unique chance to be part of a garden city lifestyle. Located in the South Hams countryside and close to beaches, yet within 15 minutes’ drive or bus journey of Plymouth city centre, the new community will feature traditionally designed homes, local scale business units, new primary schools, neighbourhood shopping, indoor and outdoor sports facilities, an array of other community facilities and a 500 acre (200 ha) country park.

Langage Science Park At Langage Science Park, work on site commenced in November 2014 to create a new £2.6 million sustainable development comprising approximately 30,000 sq ft (2,800 sq m) of high quality B1, B2 and B8 employment accommodation with units ranging in size from 1,250-20,000 sq ft.

The new development is aimed at high end companies and is due to complete in summer 2015. It is expected to create up to 40 construction jobs while the build is underway and up to 80 FTE jobs when fully occupied. The units will incorporate flexible office space (heated, carpeted, lit and ready for occupation) that can be easily extended to suit users’ specific requirements. The site will also have large service yard areas, dedicated parking, cycle shelters, waste recycling zones and electrically operated loading doors.

Royal William Yard Royal William Yard is home to the largest collection of Grade I Listed military buildings in Europe. The 15 acre (6 ha) former naval victualling yard benefits from a spectacular waterfront location with dramatic views across Plymouth Sound.

The site is a high quality, mixed-use development of office, retail, leisure, and residential space, set within unique historic buildings. With an on-site marina and a range of dining establishments, Royal William Yard is a fabulous place for a day or evening out.

Social Enterprise Plymouth is one of the most exciting places to run a social enterprise in the country.

Over 150 social enterprises are in the city, employing over 7,000 people providing a ready-made pool of likeminded businesses to trade with, and it is easy to meet similar businesses through the vibrant Social Enterprise Network. Plymouth City Council has cemented its support and belief in the social enterprise economy in Plymouth by introducing a Social Enterprise Investment Fund. This discretionary fund is designed to help social enterprises with limited financial resources establish themselves and grow with a revenue contribution to provide the backing of high quality business support at the 'project under development' stage and a capital contribution at the project business case stage.

City Centre and Waterfront With over 50,000 students and 5.5 million visitors to the city, Plymouth's city centre and waterfront will be seeing many exciting changes and developments over the next five years.

When complete these exciting plans will comprise of up to 873 new homes, 86,000 sq ft (8,000 sq m) of business space, 21,500 sq ft (2,000 sq m) of retail space and 95 acres (38 ha) of new community park and the new primary school. The Mayflower left Plymouth, England on 16 September 1620 with just 102 passengers and crew on board. It arrived some 66 days later, on 21 November, in Cape Cod on the US East Coast. The Mayflower sailing is celebrated by many in the US as the beginning of a national legacy, and in the UK as the beginning of one of the most enduring alliances the world has ever known. No other date so embodies the centuries of shared cultural values and traditions that lie behind the ‘Special Relationship’ that has seen these two nations

stand shoulder to shoulder through two world wars and the recent and current conflicts in the Middle East and elsewhere.

In recognition of the importance of this momentous anniversary to both sides of the Atlantic, Plymouth UK has already begun to plan for 2020.

Civic leaders and stakeholders from commerce, industry, the arts and culture across the city have come together to begin to plan a programme culminating in the 400 year anniversary celebrations. Plymouth has taken the

lead and invited the other key towns, cities and communities within the UK, US and Holland to work together in partnership to plan, deliver and provide a legacy for our future generations, pre, during and post 2020.

The first joint annual ‘Illuminate’ event took place in November 2014, where over 1,000 candles were lit to signal the start of the countdown to the anniversary, marking the quote by Governor William Bradford in his book Of Plimoth Plantation which states, “As one small candle may light a thousand, so the light here kindled has shown unto many.”

Plymouth History Centre The Plymouth History Centre is a £25 million scheme in the heart of Plymouth.

The vision is to transform the existing museum on North Hill into a cuttingedge cultural centre, three times its existing size, which will open in time for the Mayflower 400 commemorations in 2020.

Together the partners want to create a centre that will enable visitors to get more involved with the archives, a centre where they will find, uncover and engage with the stories behind the collections. They are also building one of the South West’s leading contemporary art galleries and a centre that will become the latest key addition to the peninsula’s tourism industry.

“Visitors will be able to come to Plymouth and learn more about inspiring characters such as the famous Sir Francis Drake or the Pilgrim Fathers who left for America from the Mayflower Steps. They can learn that the great explorer Scott of the Antarctic was born in Plymouth and that the collections of Sir Joshua Reynolds, the influential 18th century painter, are housed here in Plymouth.

Now we want to bring this to a new generation and to create a centre that will engage visitors from all over the world.”

The collections from the existing Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery will come together with still images from the largest body of photographic records in the region belonging to the South West Image Bank, footage from the South West Film and Television Archive dating back to the early 1900s and collections from the Plymouth and West Devon Record Office dating back to the late 12th century and Plymouth Central Library’s local studies collection.

With £5 million committed to the project by Plymouth City Council and a further £12.8 million available as part of a successful bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund, the new centre has the potential to be a major contemporary attraction of huge importance.

The outstanding finance will be sourced from other national funding bodies, trusts and foundations and from the corporate sector.

Official partners of the History Centre are: Plymouth City Council (Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery, Plymouth and West Devon Record Office and the local studies collection of the Central Library), South West Film and Television Archive, South West Image Bank, and Plymouth University, (Faculty of Arts and Humanities, and Peninsula Arts).

The Hemerdon project is the third largest tungsten and tin resource in the world and will enter production in 2015, providing a secure supply of tungsten and valuable export revenue for the UK.
