The Independent Quarter Oldham Council has invested £1 million in a comprehensive package of support to help new and existing independent businesses to set up and grow their businesses.

Oldham town centre is undergoing a transformation due to regeneration and investment, with a renewed confidence brought about by the new tram, the newly redeveloped Old Town Hall into an Odeon cinema complex – plus a state-of-the-art sports centre, and theatre in the pipeline. 40 new companies have moved into the Quarter over the last four years, leading to around 300 jobs.

The Place The Independent Quarter comprises: Yorkshire Street, the eastern end of Union Street, and all the streets in-between The area is home to a number of strong independent and family-run businesses, and has great potential to continue to reinvigorate the town, to make it look, feel and work better.

The council's vision for the Independent Quarter is to create a place with a strong identity and distinctiveness that will:

• Improve the town’s offer – with a great range of independent businesses and shops that complement the high street favourites nearby • Attract more people to the town – increasing footfall as people choose to shop, spend their leisure time and work in Oldham • Provide an attractive link between major developments, such as the Old Town Hall Cinema and the new Mumps Metrolink stop

The Fund The fund is used to help strengthen the identity and distinctiveness of the independent quarter in a range of ways by supporting existing and new start-up independent businesses in the area.

Oldham Enterprise Fund It’s official - there has never been a better time for new businesses in Oldham Latest figures from the Office of National Statistics show that Oldham has more than doubled the number of business start-ups from just under 50 per 10,000 working age population to nearly 105 since 2012.

Oldham now has the fourth largest business start-up rate in Greater Manchester, behind Bury, Manchester and Trafford.

Oldham Council has also supported the development of the Oldham Enterprise Trust as part of the ‘Get Oldham Working’ initiative. The Trust, kick-started by a £1m donation from The Stoller Charitable Trust, aims to help the next generation of entrepreneurs get start-up businesses off the ground and also supports young people into employment.

This is significantly higher than the North- West average of 93 per 10,000 working age population and the UK average of 100.

In Oldham, a comprehensive programme of business facing support has been established.

This includes targeted start-up assistance for new entrepreneurs as well as growth support for existing businesses which are mostly delivered by Growth Company and People Plus.

Businesses can also take advantage of the new Smart Start programme, recently launched by the Business Growth Hub. This is designed to support local residents who want to find out if self-employment is right for them - as well as those who have recently started their own business.

The Blue Coat School Manchester Nexus The Cranmer Education Trust The Blue Coat School, judged ‘outstanding’ by both Ofsted and the Statutory Inspection of Anglican Schools, is consistently the borough’s highest achieving state school.

Founded by Thomas Henshaw in 1829, Blue Coat has grown from an orphanage for the poor boys of the parish to a flourishing community of over 1,600 students, of whom 400 are in the Sixth Form. Located in the town centre with views across the

centred initial teacher training arm, which trains teachers for both the local and national education market.

Pennines and out to Jodrell Bank, the campus has a range of buildings including the beautiful original neo-Gothic foundation, the new science building (named after local Nobel prize winner Dr Patrick Steptoe) and the new Clarke building, opened by local and world famous artist Brian Clarke.

Blue Coat was the first school in Oldham to convert to academy status in 2011 and in 2015 created a multi-academy trust, The Cranmer Education Trust, which now includes Blue Coat, two primary schools (East Crompton St George’s and Mayfield), and is submitting a bid to open a new secondary school in Oldham which will extend Blue Coat’s excellent provision to more young people.

We serve a multi-faith, multi-ethnic and multi-talented community and welcome all schools to our trust, both those with a religious character, which we will nurture, and community schools, who want to join us to create the best schools, the best teaching and the best future for our young people.

Oldham College Oldham College and University Campus Oldham are working in partnership with the Chamber of Commerce to support local businesses.

The work involved includes employer seminars and drop in sessions at the chamber employer lounge within the college, providing updates about apprenticeships and wider skills issues.

Specialist teams support businesses of all sizes with the recruitment of apprentices or in carrying out full reviews of workforce development plans, providing advice on grants, funding and the new apprenticeship levy.

Employers are also involved in shaping a range of programmes to address skills gaps for both the current and future demand of Oldham and the Greater Manchester area.

Together we prepare all our students for working life, support school leavers who are ready to start their career, support businesses to up-skill their staff, and retrain unemployed adults.
