Section 1: Introduction The Royal Borough of Greenwich is one of 33 London Boroughs. It is in the south east of London and is bordered to the north by the River Thames.With eight miles of river frontage, Royal Greenwich has the longest river frontage of the London Boroughs.

Royal Greenwich covers an area of more than 5,000 hectares and has a population of approximately 245,000.The Royal Borough includes three main town centres; Greenwich,Woolwich and Eltham. It also encompasses Charlton, Blackheath, Kidbrooke, Plumstead,Abbey Wood and Thamesmead.

Royal Greenwich is perfectly positioned to make the transition from one of London’s Host Boroughs to one of London’s Growth Boroughs at the heart of London’s future economic growth. Earlier this year Peabody announced its proposals for a £1bn regeneration programme for Thamesmead over the next ten years.

This, together with two Housing Zones which are being led

by Royal Borough of Greenwich and the London Borough of Bexley and delivered by Peabody, with more than £45m funding from the Greater London Authority, has made Thamesmead one of the UK’s leading regeneration projects.

As well as creating thousands of new homes, we are committed to improving existing homes and public spaces and creating jobs and commercial opportunities in Thamesmead.

We are working with the Royal Borough of Greenwich and the London Borough of Bexley to look at how we can make the most of the Elizabeth line. This includes extending the public realm improvements that they are carrying out around Abbey Wood station and along Harrow Manor Way to create a gateway into Thamesmead.

We are also looking at how we can make the most of the DLR extension that is in the pipeline for Thamesmead and are working with Transport for London to see how we can bring further transport improvements to the area.

Section 3 : A Strategic Location Royal Greenwich is well-connected to central London and south east England by the road and rail network.The north of the Royal Borough also benefits from connections to the London Underground, Docklands Light Railway (DLR) stations, the Thames foot tunnels and river boat services.

Public transport will be further enhanced by the completion of the Crossrail link. Crossrail is the new high frequency, convenient and accessible railway for London and the south east.Work on Crossrail is now underway.

The Crossrail line is set to pass through the northern part of the Borough, with two stations planned for Greenwich at Woolwich and Abbey Wood. From 2018, Crossrail will link from Maidenhead in the west to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east via new twin tunnels under central London. It will connect Heathrow Airport, the West End, the City of London and Canary Wharf.

Completed in 2012, the Emirates Air Line links the Greenwich Peninsula with the Royal Docks.The Emirates Air Line is now a major attraction.

The crossing takes about 5 minutes and the link carries 2,500 passengers per hour. The Emirates Air Line supports regeneration and helps to connect communities and improve access to attractions on both sides of the river.
