NHS Lothian is the second largest health board in Scotland, serving around 800,000 people, employing 24,000 staff and investing around £1.5 billion a year in healthcare services
Wherever we provide care – be it in patients’ own homes, primary and community settings, or in hospital – we are focused on delivering the highest standards of care in the best facilities possible.
Our three main acute teaching hospitals are the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh (RIE), the Western General Hospital (WGH) and St John’s Hospital, Livingston. Together they provide a comprehensive range of acute and speciality services for patients locally, regionally and nationally.
Our Royal Hospital for Sick Children (RHSC) is a teaching hospital that provides general and specialist services for more than 100,000 children and young people from across Lothian and beyond.
Edinburgh has a long history of being at the forefront of medicine and research within Scotland and the world. Now we are once again investing in the future, planning new hospitals and services to ensure we continue to innovate and lead the way in advancing healthcare.
A new facility housing the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) and the Department of Clinical Neurosciences (DCN) will open in 2017. Next to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, the development will be at the heart of Edinburgh’s BioQuarter – a multidisciplinary campus which brings together patient care, clinical research and knowledge exchange.
The RHSC and DCN have played pioneering roles in developing Scotland’s healthcare and our vision is to create a world-class facility that allows us to continue to provide the highest standards of patient-focused care and pioneer new treatments.
The RHSC has been based as its current site in the centre of Edinburgh for over 100 years and is a world leader in a number of fields, including the development of keyhole surgery in children. The DCN recently celebrated 50 years in its current home at the Western General Hospital and throughout this time has played, and continues to play, an important role in advancing neurosurgery.
The benefits of having children’s, maternity and adult acute hospital services on the same site are well documented. Having paediatric care, specialist neonatal care, neurosciences and
commemorating 200 years of pioneering care provision. Throughout its rich and diverse history, the hospital has continued to evolve and innovate to meet the needs of patients.
Now the REH has reached another milestone in its history with a £300million plan that will see the phased redevelopment of the hospital on its existing Morningside site over the next 10 years.
The REH provides acute psychiatric and mental health services, including treatment for learning disabilities and dementia. Its specialist services include the treatment of eating disorders, addiction problems and young people’s mental health.
available to patients and staff involved in the delivery of mental health care. Phase one of the redevelopment is due for completion in 2017. The £50m construction programme will provide new state-of-the-art facilities for adult acute mental health inpatient services, older people’s mental health assessment and treatment, intensive psychiatric care and rehabilitation. It will also see the development of a new facility for the Robert Fergusson national brain injury unit.
The site redevelopment is being carried out in partnership with hub South East Scotland Ltd.
adult and children’s emergency departments together will ensure that teams can share experience and expertise for the benefit of patients.
The proximity to the University of Edinburgh Medical School and being part of Edinburgh’s growing BioQuarter, places the facility firmly in the centre of one of the most successful and renowned medical and research communities in the world, improving opportunities for partnership working and bringing research to the bedside.

WELCOME to the second edition of the Edinburgh Business Directory,an indispensable information tool for companies in Edinburgh.
This guide will provide an overview of the vibrant Edinburgh economy and outline the type of business support that the City of Edinburgh Council has put in place for small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) to help them grow and prosper.
It will also provide information on many companies which operate in and around Edinburgh and the possible business opportunities these companies offer to us all.
SMEs are an integral part of Edinburgh’s economy.
Edinburgh’s SMEs comprise 94% of our businesses and are responsible for 38% of the city’s employment and 40% of turnover. In November 2015, Business Insider listed their 13 hottest start up companies in Scotland- 10 of the start ups listed have bases in Edinburgh,
highlighting the dynamic start up environment in the city.
The guide also supports the City of Edinburgh Council’s economic strategy,A Strategy for Jobs,by outlining the key attributes which make Edinburgh such a desirable place in which to work, live and invest.Edinburgh offers an exceptional quality of life and is connected to major commerce centres by train and plane.Edinburgh Airport flies to over 140 destinations and London can be reached in just over four hours by train.
As well as attracting inward investment, the City of Edinburgh Council is investing in the city’s development and regeneration through the Edinburgh 12,a unique offering of strategic development sites in the city, and supporting businesses
through Business Gateway and incubators such as the Creative Exchange. The City of Edinburgh Council also helps ensure that there is a steady stream of skilled workers and reduces poverty, inequality and deprivation in the city by reaching out to those furthest from the labour market. For example, the Edinburgh Guarantee targets school leavers who are at risk of not moving into positive destinations and has been hugely successful.
I hope that you find this directory useful to inform the quality and breadth of businesses Edinburgh has to offer.

Edinburgh gave a dominant performance in the 2016/17 European Cities of the Future awards, ranking second overall in its category and top for business friendliness, as well as being named runner-up for economic potential and FDI strategy. Just what makes Edinburgh such a desirable place to do business?
2015 marked another highly successful year for Edinburgh, with the city securing 40 foreign direct investments – equivalent to one every nine days.
By far the most active sector was technology,
with the American software giants Apple, Bloomberg and Dell among the firms
establishing themselves in Edinburgh. Other highly active sectors included renewables
– with German wind turbine firm Deutsche Windtechnik and Danish offshore wind and wave developer Floating Power Plant both opening in Edinburgh – and financial services,
While being a compact, mid-sized city, Edinburgh offers businesses the amenities of a far larger
city. Companies trading in Edinburgh have
ready access to a sophisticated suite of corporate finance products, a comprehensive
network of professional suppliers, and an international airport serving over 100 destinations. Key operating costs compare
favourably with those of larger cities. Within Edinburgh, businesses benefit from an
impressive range of support, including the City of Edinburgh Council’s ‘soft landing’ service, a package of assistance for inward investors that includes property searches, market research, practical relocation advice, and touchdown space in the city centre. The Council has also
launched initiatives such as the EdinburghShenzhen Creative Incubator, which offers free
desk space and a package of other support for creative enterprises from the burgeoning Chinese mega-city of Shenzhen looking to expand into Edinburgh.
> 46% OF EDINBURGH’S WORKFORCE IS ANY OTHER CITY IN THE UK
with the Midtown Manhattan-based boutique investment banks BTIG and Cantor Fitzgerald each expanding into the city.
The University of Edinburgh is the city’s oldest and largest university, ranked the world’s 21st best university by QS and the 24th best by Times Higher Education. The city is also home to Edinburgh Napier University, HeriotWatt University, Queen Margaret University Edinburgh, and the main campus of Scotland’s Rural College. These institutions award over
17,000 degrees each year, fuelling the engine of Edinburgh’s economy with a steady flow
of new talent.
Edinburgh is also home to Edinburgh College, Scotland’s largest vocational college, along with numerous independent training academies.
The cavalcade of new arrivals came in what was a multi-record breaking year for the city. Edinburgh Airport reported its busiest ever year, recording over 11 million passengers, while the Edinburgh Festival Fringe sold an unprecedented 2.3 million tickets. Edinburgh is booming, and this success is whetting the interest of more and more multinationals.
Among the latter is CodeClan, a dedicated digital skills academy offering intensive 16 week courses that equip students with coding skills and an industry-recognised qualification.
In addition to its indigenous talent, Edinburgh’s skills base is supplemented by a steady stream of international migrants (more than 12,000 last year). The city’s popularity as a place to work stems from its renowned quality of life. Key attractions of the city include its stunning architecture (the city is home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites); compact
layout (one-third of commuters walk or cycle to work); efficient public transport (Edinburgh
Trams was named ‘operator of the year’ at the 2015 Light Rail Awards); and excellent recreation opportunities (the city boasts four Michelin Starred restaurants).
A key factor underpinning Edinburgh’s continued attractiveness to inward investors is the city’s skilled workforce. Over 46% of Edinburgh’s workforce is degree educated –more than any other city in the UK. In total, more than 150,000 working age graduates live in Edinburgh.
The city’s higher education institutions are at the heart of Edinburgh’s skills base.

The Borders Railway is the longest new railway to open in the UK for over a hundred years.
Passing through Midlothian and the Scottish Borders, it connects Edinburgh with Tweedbank and is a catalyst for growth and development in the region. Trains run every 30 minutes and the journey from Edinburgh Waverley to Tweedbank takes under an hour.
The Borders Railway, which opened in September 2015,is greatly exceeding expectations.
In the first few months of operation 580,000 passengers have used the route, greatly exceeding initial expectations. The railway corridor area includes internationally significant tourist attractions, major town centre developments, and businesses from key growth sectors. The opportunities available are complemented by a welleducated workforce whose mobility will be enhanced by the railway.
Moreover, the railway corridor has been included in the European Commission’s ‘Assisted Area Map 2014 –2020’.This status means that businesses can be awarded Regional Selective Assistance (RSA) under the EU state aid rules for Tier 2 business development and growth.
The local authorities in Edinburgh,Midlothian, and the Scottish Borders are working with Scottish Enterprise and Scottish Development International to attract new investment along the route of the railway. There are two strands of work involved in this effort:
• An inward investment prospectus website, www.bordersrailwayprospect us.com shows over 100 site-specific development opportunities for the housing, commercial and leisure sectors, and describe the incentives available to inward investors. The prospectus is also available in hard and soft copy.
• A Borders Railway Investment Fund that will assist
businesses with growth potential in developing and implementing projects.A Borders Railway Inward Investment Response will assist businesses and public sector agencies re-locating to the area to make the most of their move.
The three local authorities contributed to Borders Railway,Maximising the Impact:A Blueprint for the Future.Launched in November 2014 by the then First Minister of Scotland,Alex Salmond,it boasts the following vision for the Borders Railway:
“By 2020 the benefits of better transport connectivity will continue to spread across Midlothian and the Scottish Borders. The region will have experienced significant
economic and population growth from new and affordable housing, commercial and tourism development,a diversifying business base and new demand for learning and skills. Working in partnership with the business community, the challenge of delivering an ambitious programme of activity will have been met.”

The City of Edinburgh Council's Economic Strategy for 2012-2017 was launched in September 2012,and was developed in partnership between the City of Edinburgh and key city stakeholders.
The Council’s Vision for Edinburgh
“A confident, creative and inspiring capital city, powering growth and jobs for the city region and Scotland.
A city whose quality of life and commitment to sustainability draws talent and investment from around the world.
A City where the public, private and third sectors collaborate with common purpose.
And ultimately,a city which puts the people of Edinburgh at the heart of its economic success.”
Four tailored programmes work to achieve sustainable growth from investment in jobs: Invest in the city’s development and regeneration Help unemployed people into work or learning GOAL Sustainable growth from investment in jobs Support inward investment Support businesses +++=
The strategy was informed by an extensive Economic Review of the Edinburgh city region in 2011.This involved consultation with key city stakeholders, including the Edinburgh Business Forum and feedback from the Council’s Economic Development Committee. One of the major challenges identified in the Economic Review was the jobs gap, with demand for jobs in Edinburgh forecast to grow by as much as twice the rate of supply.
The strategy’s focus is therefore on the creation and safeguarding of jobs, not
only as it is key to Edinburgh’s competitiveness as an international city, but importantly so that the City can bring in new jobs to help residents find meaningful employment.Having a job is very strongly linked to prosperity, better health, improved educational attainment, greater equality and a sustainable environment. All of these factors are influenced by economic wellbeing.
Given the scale of the jobs’ challenge and its implications for communities across the
city, supporting the economy is at the heart of every Council service. The strategy therefore makes every Council service accountable for growth in jobs and investment.
The strategy sets three targets for 2017:
•Create or safeguarding of 20,000 new jobs;
•Bring in £1.3 billion of new development;and
• Assist 10,000 people facing significant barriers to the labour market into work or learning

These are very ambitious targets for a medium-sized city and it is recognised that the Council cannot achieve them on its own,so communitywide support for the strategy is encouraged. The challenges are significant and meeting them will require a strong sense of shared purpose and collaboration between business, the public sector and
communities.Only by focusing joint efforts on supporting the economy, will Edinburgh be able to deliver its ambitions for the city.
The progress of the Council towards these Key Performance Indicators is reported regularly to various Council Committees, and updates are sent to key

The Edinburgh and South East Scotland City Region comprises six local authorities: The City of Edinburgh,East Lothian,Fife,Midlothian,Scottish Borders and West Lothian and is at the heart of the UK and Scottish economy.
Its success is critical to the delivery of national economic ambitions and the creation of a fairer, more equal society.
The partner councils have been working together since early 2015 to submit a proposal for a City Region Deal to the UK and Scottish Governments, and in March 2016,the Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne announced his intention to work towards a Deal for the region.
The City Region Deal is a mechanism for accelerating growth by pulling in significant government investment.By investing this funding in infrastructure, skills and innovation, the region’s economic performance will be significantly improved, which will not only generate funds to pay back this initial investment but also draw in significant additional funding from the private sector. It is also about greater autonomy and decision making powers
“...THE DEAL IS A REAL OPPORTUNITY TO DRIVE FORWARD A FRESH APPROACH TO COLLABORATIVE WORKING WHICH WOULD DELIVER A STEP CHANGE IN THE REGION’S ECONOMIC PERFORMANCE.”
for the region to help it deliver public services more effectively and to tackle inequality and deprivation. The ambition is to secure £1bn of funding and it is estimated that an additional £3.2bn worth of private sector investment could be leveraged if the bid is successful.
The region brings together unique strengths in knowledge, culture and technology and the Deal is a real opportunity to drive forward a fresh approach to collaborative working which would deliver a step change in the region’s economic performance.
By investing in people, the regional workforce will be better equipped to respond
to evolving opportunities; by investing in housing at a suitable scale, price and in the right places, the labour market will flourish;by investing in world class infrastructure, people will be connected to opportunities;and by investing in innovation,an ecosystem will draw on the global excellence found right across academic and business sectors.

Edinburgh is Scotland’s leading tourism destination attracting 3.7 million visits in 2014;generating 13.36 million visitors nights and over £1.2 billion in visitor spend.
There are an estimated 3,500 tourism businesses in the city that each play a key role in delivering the tourism product. The many different parts of Edinburgh’s visitor experience are supplied by a wide range of large and small scale operators including transport and accommodation providers, visitor attractions, cultural venues and conference centres, tour operators, shops, bars and restaurants, and events and festivals.Collectively these businesses deliver Edinburgh’s visitor offer, however individually they cannot deliver an all-encompassing visitor experience.
Given the scale and complexity of the sector it is therefore essential that there is adequate co-ordination and communication between the diverse range of operators, activities, and services to ensure that the visitor experience is a high quality, integrated, and seamless one.
The Edinburgh Tourism Action Group (ETAG) holds a unique position in that it provides the only forum in the city which brings together all of
these component parts of Edinburgh’s tourism industry across the private and public sectors.
Based on a collective leadership model,ETAGs primary function is to communicate with, and facilitate the coming together of a large number of industry groups from across the sector, as well as relevant national agencies. The ultimate success of Edinburgh as a visitor destination relies on all parts of the visitor experience working effectively together to ensure that the customer journey - pre, during and post arrival equals that of a world class tourism destination.
ETAG’s core aims therefore are to build a stronger tourism community, provide a network for communication, and create reasons to bring businesses together to share best practice, collaborate and innovate.By helping improve business performance and enhance the visitor experience we ultimately look to strengthen Edinburgh’s position as a world class visitor destination.
With support from Scottish Enterprise,ETAG delivers a range of industry facing activity, including approximately 150 events a year ranging from conferences, trade events, digital workshops and seminars,to innovation workshops, business briefings and networking events.
We have developed a range of market intelligence resources including a series of ETAG Business Opportunity Guides –free and easy to use guides on a variety of topics from becoming China Ready,to making the most of our year-round Cultural offer,to Literary Tourism and making the most of our UNESCO World Heritage status.
ETAG has also launched an online Destination training tool called OUR EDINBURGH. Developed by industry,OUR EDINBURGH is aimed at visitor facing staff across the tourism industry. The online module is a simple, fast and costeffective tool designed to give customer facing staff an overview of the key aspects of the Edinburgh visitor experience. In improving staff knowledge of the destination
we aim to ensure that visitors receive a high quality and consistent level visitor welcome and customer care across the city.
ETAG also played a key role in facilitating the development of Edinburgh 2020:The Edinburgh Tourism Strategy. Developed in partnership with industry and launched in 2012, Edinburgh 2020 sets the strategic direction for the city’s tourism sector. In setting ambitious targets to grow the value of the tourism sector, the city and partners are looking to create a sustainable sector in which our tourism businesses can truly thrive.

Edinburgh’s Festivals make Edinburgh unique. They have been essential to defining the city as a dynamic year-round destination for residents;an exciting, cultural magnet for visitors;a rich, creative working environment for companies and their employees;and a lively and vibrant atmosphere in which students can study and socialise.
The Festivals literally and distinctively inhabit every corner of the historic heart of the city – every theatre, every hall, every courtyard, every basement, every park. From the Castle Esplanade to the ancient backstreets of the medieval Old Town, from the grand gardens of the 18th century Charlotte Square to
the narrow, cobbled side streets off the Royal Mile, from the grandeur of the Festival Theatre to the dark intimacy of the city’s Masonic Halls.
A powerful influence and a source of inspiration, the Festivals reach extends beyond the cultural sector into the wider creative and corporate ecosystem of Edinburgh and Scotland. The Festivals lead their own sector and influence and fuel collaboration across many others - from collaborative working to national and international marketing, from innovation and technology to environmental good practice, from new approaches to funding to cultural diplomacy. They have a successful record in partnership building with government, cultural agencies, international institutions, tourism and education bodies, and private sector businesses.
The rich creative environment the Festivals breed and feed has produced an atmosphere that is deeply attractive to creative thinkers. But the Edinburgh Festivals also make a major contribution to the quality of life of the people of the city region and of Scotland as a whole. They invest in the
growth and development of individuals and communities, through the rich, diverse and highly accessible nature of the work they present.Their active commitment to participation sees them extend the impacts of their programmes with important education and community initiatives.
Such work means that the Edinburgh Festivals are a source of national pride in a country whose national identity is rooted in a passion for creativity and ideas. The Festivals are defining icons in Scotland’s cultural portfolio that exude a sense of confidence and contribute to our sense of self. They also represent Scotland at its most open and welcoming, confidently embracing artists, media and audiences from around the world, bringing them together in endlessly
inventive and compelling ways. They are distinctively Scottish and yet profoundly international, committed to capitalising their enormous global value for the benefit of Scotland.
Investing in Edinburgh’s Festivals is investing in success, ambition, transforming work and bold enterprise that can achieve great things now and in the future. With 2017 marking the seventieth anniversary of the birth of the world’s leading festival city, Edinburgh’s Festivals are determined to make Edinburgh where the future happens through cultural leadership and innovative programming.
“...THE CITY NOW BOASTS 12 MAJOR INDIVIDUAL FESTIVALS,HOSTING
OVER 25,000 INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS,MORE THAN 1,000 ACCREDITED MEDIA AND AUDIENCES OF OVER 4 MILLION...”
What they say about the Festivals
•The Edinburgh Festivals have undeniably given the nation and our capital city a priceless brand which has resonance across the globe and especially makes an impact on some of the most influential opinion formers in overseas countries. They are therefore an asset which should be vigorously encouraged and sustained in this era of globalisation;the festivals are indeed a jewel in the Scottish crown which bring a matchless world-wide profile to our country.
Sir Tom Devine, Historian
•To call the Edinburgh Festivals a “scene”is to be timid and inhibited. It is an upheaval in the life of Britain.
Toronto Star, Canada
•Today the importance of Edinburgh’s Festivals is relevant not only to Scotland, but to the world.
Sérgio Saboya, Director, Festival Cena Brasil Internacional, Brasil.
•There is simply no better and bigger shop window for the world’s cultural trends on earth than the Edinburgh Festivals.
Wolfgang Hoffman, Creative Producer, Berlin
•The importance of the Edinburgh Festivals cannot be overstated. It’s an astonishing showcase of arts and culture from around the world that transforms the Scottish capital into something otherworldly. Mail Today, New Delhi, India
•Being quality-oriented and encouraging innovation is the distinguishing feature of the Edinburgh Festivals and this also accounts for the reason that worldwide culture professionals come and do business here.
