Chamber Chat Every time the Annual Awards Dinner and Gala rolls around, I’m always reminded when I first started at the Chamber.

I joined the team about two weeks before their largest formal event of the entire year. We needed event programs, social media banners, slide-shows, table numbers, and sponsor recognition. Needless to say, I was moderately overwhelmed, but I was ready to jump in and give it my best. I remember looking at the registration list before everyone began to arrive and thinking, “I know three people on this list...” By the end of the night, I was trying my best to memorize everybody’s names and what business they were with.

All that to say, the Gala has always been a good reminder that facing a new experience or challenge head-on always pays off in the end. In fact, I think it’s a pretty common lesson in our business community.

You open your doors and hope that you’ll be welcomed, accepted and successful. My hope is that the Chamber can give these businesses that welcome, the acceptance, and even aid in their success, just as Angie and Kara helped to show me the ropes when I first started. It makes all the difference in the world to have someone to guide you through an overwhelming experience, instead of just throwing you in the deep end and saying, “good luck!”

As we enter the second half of 2019, I can’t help but look forward to the next challenge. The best part is that I have the greatest team of friends to take on the challenges with me!

On April 15th, the Chamber held its’ 24th Annual Golf Classic at the Club at Lake Sinclair. Despite the windy weather in the morning, we had a blast getting to hang out with everyone and enjoy a day on the course. Friendly competition and fun contests out on the course made for the perfect tournament. This particular year was extra special since one of our players successfully hit a hole-in-one that won him a brand new truck!

2019 On Saturday, June 15th, the Chamber hosted its’ Annual Awards Dinner & Gala at Magnolia Ballroom. This event was sponsored by Exchange Bank.

Everyone in attendance had the best time getting to celebrate small business and honor several outstanding achievements in our community. Tent-Sational Events was named the 2019 Small Business of the Year.

In addition, we had three amazing finalists: Bodyplex, the Local Yolkal Café, and Wells Fargo Advisors. The ambassador of the year award went to Jordan Norville, the Rising Star Award was given to Sinclair Reserve Realty, the Making a Difference in

Milledgeville Award went to the Rotary Club of Milledgeville, and the Teacher of the Year for the Baldwin County School District was Sarah Tanner. With the success of last year’s silent auction, the Chamber continued the new tradition into this year and had great participation.

In early May, our Chamber participated in our very first Clash of the Chambers contest. This was an awesome opportunity to compete with other chambers on a national level and get some exposure for our local businesses. Our staff, ambassadors, and board members had an absolute blast getting to run around Baldwin County and take pictures with as many of our members as possible.

CGTC Expands Aviation and Aircraft Programs for Growth of Training in Middle Georgia

Holiday Inn Express & Suites, MIlledeville, Georgia Wins IHG 2018 Quality Excellence Award

Recent expansion of Central Georgia Technical College’s (CGTC) Aviation Maintenance Technology (AMT) and Aircraft Structural Technology (AST) programs into approximately 240,000 square feet of space at Middle Georgia Regional (MGRA) airport centralized training opportunities for the College’s 11-county service area.

The Holiday Inn Express & Suites Milledgeville, Georgia, received the IHG (InterContinental Hotels Group) 2018 Quality Excellence Award for achieving superior levels of service excellence.

In April, the Macon-Bibb County Industrial Authority, Robins AFB, and CGTC announced a new state aviation workforce training and sustainment approach located at the former Boeing facility at MGRA. The move, in part, shortens the distance for Milledgeville students to take part in career programs for one of Georgia’s fastest growing industries, and as a whole, strategically responds to the high, regional demand for skilled aerospace workers.

Georgia’s largest single-site employer, Robins AFB, initiated its hiring campaign to on-board 1,200 workers in areas such as aircraft structural, aviation maintenance, and other positions in 2018.

“Through this initiative, CGTC students are gaining the unique opportunity to learn and experience handson training in the same facility with the outstanding public servants from Robins Air Force Base,” said Dr. Ivan Allen, president of CGTC. “This model will provide our students the true workforce experience and the ability to learn the latest industry techniques so that on the first day, they have the most current skill set in order to be productive employees. Our region and state’s aerospace employers will greatly benefit by experiencing shorter orientation and training periods for new employees and by having even greater access to and input on educational training and curriculum.

This is truly a win-win situation for our students and employers.”

The project will not only strengthen this particular industry but will free-up lab and classroom space on the College’s campuses for the growth in other educational and training programs.

Jennifer began her employment with Citizens Bank of the South in January 2017 as an Executive Assistant at the newly opened Branch here in Milledgeville. Not only does Jennifer go above and beyond every day for CBOTS, but she is also a dedicated community member serving as a MilledgevilleBaldwin County Chamber Ambassador for 6 years, and recognized as Ambassador of the year in 2016.

Class of 2019 Graduates from John Milledge Academy

Erin Andrews Media Establishes Internship Program

Congratulations to the JMA Class of 2019. They have received 100% college acceptance, 24% received Zell Miller Scholarship, 48% received Hope Scholarship, and 14% signed athletic scholarships. They earned 375 Dual Enrollment credit hours, 3 Georgia Scholars recognition (only students in Baldwin County), and approximately $1,443,226 in total scholarships earned!!

Erin Andrews Media established an internship program last Fall to provide Georgia College students with an opportunity to work for a semester in exchange for class credit.

Local Students Graduate from MBC’s Leadership Baldwin Class The MilledgevilleBaldwin County Chamber and the Leadership Baldwin committee is excited to have eight students graduate Youth Leadership Baldwin (YLB) this year.

YLB is an annual program designed to give high school juniors in Baldwin County the opportunity to grow as individuals, build relationships with peers and community leaders and broaden their knowledge of local government, business and civic activities.

“I am confident that all of these students will put their talents and leadership skills to work in their future endeavors and that they will thrive and excel in college and beyond”, said Kara Lassiter, coordinator for YLB. “In addition, I want to thank each one of them for being attentive, inquisitive and enthusiastic through the entire program.”

Students majoring in marketing, graphic design and public relations can apply for positions designed to help them learn valuable skills including use of Photoshop, developing and deploying marketing strategies, managing multiple social media accounts and measuring performance of their work. EAM seeks to foster an environment in which interns can openly learn and ask questions.

“We’re very focused on providing our interns with a place where they can learn and apply important skills. We involve them in every aspect of the business and encourage them to ask lots of questions. As a business owner, it’s important for me to create a relationship with Georgia College. Our interns have been fantastic. They’ve really contributed to my business and I want them to launch their careers with a great experience. It’s hard to let them go at the end of the semester!” said Erin Andrews, CEO. Member to Member News Windstream names Foor VP of state government affairs in Georgia Windstream has named Michael Foor to serve as its vice president of state government affairs in Georgia. Foor was formerly vice president of market and member services for North Georgia Network and president of Georgia Communications Corporation. He will represent Windstream before the legislature and state agencies. He also will be responsible for community relations across the state.

Foor will be based in Baldwin and report to J Berkshire, president of Windstream Operations in Georgia.

“I’m excited to add Michael to our Windstream family in Georgia,” Berkshire said. “He has a deep understanding of how broadband networks are deployed and maintained as well extensive experience in economic development, public policy and community outreach. Michael is committed to helping Georgia communities thrive, and I look forward to working closely with him.”

“I’m thrilled to join the Windstream team,” Foor said. “I know first-hand what a tough competitor Windstream is and how hard J and his entire team are working to expand access to premium Internet speeds in rural communities across our state. Serving rural Georgia is our No. 1 job, and I’m eager to help Windstream continue to expand.”

Foor holds a Bachelor of Science in business administration with a minor in economics from Youngstown State University and a Master of Business Administration from Breanu University.

American Pest Control Welcomes Chris Greenway to Milledgeville American Pest Control is excited to welcome Chris Greenway to our Milledgeville service route.

Chris began working at American Pest Control in July of 2018 and has been honing his skills as a utility technician in the Greensboro office. He has been promoted to the role of universal technician for customers in Milledgeville and the surrounding areas.

Jim Baynes, Greensboro service manager, is confident that Chris will excel in this role, bringing peace of mind to American Pest Control’s customers by continuing to offer guaranteed protection from pests inside and outside the home.

Citizens Bank of the South Hosts Wine in the Woods Event at Lockerly Arboretum On Thursday, March 28th, Citizens Bank of the South Milledgeville hosted Lockerly Arboretum’s Wine in the Woods. The evening event was the second of three held this spring at the arboretum and featured great weather, beautiful surroundings, stimulating conversation, and of course relaxing wines. The gathering was held in the new Azalea Legacy Garden dedicated in February.

As a fun and interactive way to involve the community, Citizens Bank of the South and Lockerly offered a reduced admission fee to local professionals working in the health care industry and welcomed many more community members to enjoy the grounds.

As Barbie Pressas of CBOTS said of the event, “This is a great way to step out of our hectic, fast-paced lives for a few hours and enjoy the serenity of the natural surrounds of Lockerly Arboretum on a beautiful spring evening with your friends and co-workers. What’s not to love about that?” Well said!

Magnolia State Bank Raises Funds for Georgia Cancer Support Georgia Cancer Support, Inc. is a non-profit organization, established in Milledgeville on January 1st, 2012. It provides many kinds of support for cancer patients throughout the state. GCS depends on the generosity of the Middle Georgia community for financial donations and volunteering of their time. GCS also partners with other community resources that assist in meeting patients everyday physical, and spiritual needs.

As a corporate sponsor of this organization since its inception, Magnolia State Bank held several fundraisers during its 8th Annual Easter Bake Sale that included a “Pie in the Face” contest and raffles for Easter baskets donated by MSB’s Junior Advisory Board to raise money for their cause. Between two branches in Milledgeville and one in Gray along with the generosity of the local community, MSB was able to raise $4,410. Catelynn Duncan, at the downtown branch, was the coordinator of this year’s event.

Henry Pope Receives Georgia College School of Business Hall of Fame Honors Henry J. Pope, Jr., President and Chief Executive Officer of Exchange Bank (MilledgevilleGray-Lake Oconee), who has served for over 45 years, was recently inducted into the Georgia College School of Business Hall of Fame.

Henry graduated from Georgia College with a degree in accounting and from a banking administration program, graduate school of banking and commercial lending program. At the state level, he has served as Director of the Georgia Bankers Association and on various GBA committees. Henry has a long history of significant service to the local community including Kiwanis, Rotary, the Chamber of Commerce, the Development Authority and the Georgia College Business Advisory Board.

Century Hosts American Cancer Survivor Dinner Tuesday, March 26th, was a special night in Milledgeville, Georgia. Century Bank & Trust was honored to host again for the second year “The American Cancer Society Survivor Dinner” held at First United Methodist Church.

The food was graciously provided and served by Shane’s Rib Shack. Many thanks also to various merchants in our great city for their contribution of gifts that were given away to our local cancer survivors. Bo Sibilsky, owner of Milledgeville’s Stacked Sandwiches & More, was “The Survivor Dinner” speaker. Bo was diagnosed with bladder cancer in 2007 and remains cancer free today! Bo shared his heartwarming testimony with over 150 attendees.

Thank you to all that participated, and thank you to all who donated to this special occasion.

On June 6th, the Chamber and Navicent Health Baldwin partnered together to bring B+Well Baldwin, a community health expo, to Milledgeville. Attendees had access to a wide range of health tests and were able to speak directly with local healthcare professionals from a variety of disciplines to learn more about how to invest in their own wellness.

We want to thank all of the businesses that took time out of their busy days to hang out and spread knowledge and awareness that is crucial to a happy and healthy community. This year was super successful and we look forward to bringing B+Well Baldwin back in 2020!
