There are many ways to find scholarships:
Search the website of the college you plan to attend. Many colleges have a page of their website dedicated entirely to scholarships. Call the financial aid office of the college you plan to attend—ask about financial aid opportunities.
Use scholarship search websites to search for scholarships. Use these websites just like Google for scholarships (the scholarship search websites sheet lists many scholarship search websites).
Check out the scholarships that come directly to the school. I will list these on my Senior Scholarship List (Students, you receive this list in your school e-mail. Parents, sign up for my newsletter to receive access to this list).
Create an OSAC account and search for scholarships. Apply for hundreds of scholarships at once. http://www.oregonstudentaid.gov/scholarships.aspx
Check with your employer (or your parent/guardians’ employer) to see if they offer scholarships— many businesses offer scholarships. Unions often offer scholarships.
Scholarship Tips:
Take the time to search for scholarships. Almost no scholarships will come directly to you, you MUST search them out!
Read all scholarship applications thoroughly and follow the application instructions exactly.
Work on a resume and keep a list of the activities you participate in—this will make filling out applications go much quicker when you have all of your information in one place.
If you need a recommendation, ask for these early and give the person who is recommending you a copy of your resume and activities list—people want to recommend you but they need your help.
If you need to write an essay for a scholarship, ask a teacher to proofread this essay with you. Make sure you give teachers plenty of time to do this and ask in a respectful manner.
If you receive a scholarship, send a thank you note to the individual or organization who granted you this scholarship.
