What’s Inside: A message from the NEW Mayor, A message from the NEW Village Manager, Community Events Recap, NEW Youth Engagement opportunities, Comed reporting, Water reporting, what’s happening in July, and COVID Moving Maywood Forward Together l Mayor Nathaniel George Booker l nbooker@maywood-il.org

Within the past quarter of this year, our community has experienced multiple shootings and violence. Our prayers are with the families and loved ones of those who have experienced loss and/or trauma. As we continue to focus on Moving Maywood Forward Together, it is this administrations commitment to target the issues surrounding violence, domestic abuse, mental health, substance abuse and other areas that negatively impact the Village of Eternal Light.

During the month of June, we hosted a Reimagining Maywood’s Public Safety Community Workshop. During this meeting, Police Chief Talley and myself shared various ways we are focusing on public safety, by enhancing outdated technology, introducing new tactics surrounding community policing, as well as announcing adding a new full time patrol officer. We will continue to share updates on a regular basis and want our residents and community stakeholders to become engaged in the process. Please be sure to join us at Breakfast with the Mayor on Thursday, July 15th at 10am. This will be at the Lightford Recreation Center located t 809 Madison.

First, I want to thank you for the warm welcome I have received upon my appointment as your new Village Manager. It is an honor to serve, and I take the responsibilities entrusted to me very seriously. Prior to being appointed as Village Manager, I have served as a city council member, worked in state government, managed district operations for two (2) Members of Congress, was elected the first African-American mayor and only the second woman in the City of Kankakee, Illinois history while concurrently executing the role of City Manager/Administrator during my mayoral term. Under my administration as mayor, I oversaw the daily operations of the city, managed a team of department heads, oversaw an operating budget of $46M, revitalized economic development throughout the region, balanced the budget every year and lowered the City’s portion of property taxes for three consecutive years. I have hit the ground running in Maywood and look forward to being part of the transformation that will move Maywood Forward.

Getting vaccinated will protect yourself and those around you and will help keep your community healthy.

The vaccine will not give you COVID-19. The COVID-19 vaccine cannot create an infection and you will not be contagious.

The vaccine works with your immune system so you can better fight the virus if you are exposed.

Most of the available vaccines require two doses. The first dose primes your immune system to respond to the virus, the second dose makes the effects of the vaccine last longer. By having more than one dose, the vaccine will allow your body to have a more effective response to the virus.

This report is intended to provide residents with important information about your drinking water and the efforts made by the water system to provide safe drinking water. The source of drinking water used by Maywood is purchased surface water from the City of Chicago. Drinking water, including bottled water, may reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that water poses a health risk. More information about contaminants and potential health effects can be obtained by calling the USEPA’s Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791

Some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in drinking water than the general population. Immuno-compromised persons such as those with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune system disorders, some elderly and infants can be particularly at risk for infections. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their healthcare providers. USEPA/CDC guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk of infection by Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants are available from the USEPA’s Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791.

The sources of drinking water (both tap and bottled water) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs and wells. As water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and radioactive material, and pick up substances resulting from the presence of animals or from human activity. Possible contaminants consist of: 

Microbial contaminants, such as viruses and bacteria, which may come from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural livestock operations and wildlife. 

Inorganic contaminants like salts and metals, which can be naturally occurring or result from urban storm water run-off, industrial or domestic waste water discharges, oil and gas production, mining or farming. 

Pesticides and herbicides, which may come from a variety of sources such as agriculture, urban storm water run-off and residential uses. 

Organic chemical contaminants, including synthetic and volatile organic chemicals which are byproducts of industrial processes and petroleum production, and can also come from gas stations, urban storm water run-off and septic systems. 

Radioactive contaminants, which can be naturally occurring or be the result of oil and gas production and mining activities.

In order to ensure that tap water is safe to drink, EPA prescribes regulations which limit the amount of certain contaminants in water provided by public water systems. FDA regulations establish limits for contaminants in bottled water which must provide the same protection for public health. If present, elevated levels of lead can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead in drinking water is primarily from materials and components associated with service lines and home plumbing. The Village of Maywood and City of Chicago Department of Water Management are responsible for providing high quality drinking water but cannot control the variety of materials used in plumbing components. When your water has been sitting for several hours, you can minimize the potential for lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using your water for drinking or cooking. If you are concerned about lead in your water, you may wish to have your water tested. Information on lead in drinking water, testing methods, and steps you can take to minimize exposure is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.
