Inner City Youth “Getting There” Inc. SUMMER CAMP Our Story Inner City Youth “Getting There” Inc. is a nonprofit (501c3), highly regarded, community-based organization providing a wholesome summer program to students in Palm Beach County. We are asking for your support by sponsoring a student this summer, as we celebrate 30 years of service. Research shows that students attending academic summer enrichment programs show academic gains during the following school year. Currently serving over 150 inner city students within our community, ICY provides academic, recreational, and fine arts programs to a variety of students from local elementary, middle and high schools. Our program strengthens character, provides academic enrichment and is an avenue for cultural and artistic experiences. ICY offers KinderSmart Youth Camp, Teen Camp, and a Counselor Training Academy. It is a comprehensive seven-week program and includes a variety of instructional strategies and techniques in Math, Reading, Writing, Science, African American History, Personal Development, Dance, Music, Art, Karate and Swimming. The faculty and staff of ICY have an ongoing commitment to excellence. The leadership is a strong cadre of certified teachers who work hard to instill in students a sense of selfrespect and confidence in their ability to excel. We continue to provide positive educational experiences for students attending our program. We have 150-200 students in need of sponsorship. Your support will allow these students to participate in a well-rounded program and experience field trips and activities that they would not otherwise have an opportunity. Each child will be selected based on need and notification will be provided to the sponsor. Please see the levels of sponsorships. We appreciate any level of giving you are willing to provide to ensure a child the opportunity to experience a fun-filled, learning environment this summer.

“Education is a way out of poverty - but poverty is a hindrance to education.” Parents with the means invest more time and money than ever before in their children, while lower-income families, which are now more likely to be headed by a single parent, are increasingly stretched for time and resources.

The Achievement What Happens to Children Gap During The Summer? The achievement gap between children from high- and low-income families is roughly 30 to 40 percent larger among children born in 2001 than among those born twenty-five years earlier.

“Summer Slide”

Summer Learning Loss Summer Learning Loss accounts for about two-thirds of the ninth grade achievement gap in reading.

During the summer months, disadvantaged children tread water at best or even fall behind. It’s what we call “Summer Slide”. While better off children build their skills steadily over the summer months.

How Summer Learning Can Help Close the Achievement Gap Summer learning programs can help close the achievement gap that has been attributed, at least in part, to cumulative learning loss during the summers and that has been shown to be steeper for low-income students than for others. FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT FOR HEALTHY LIVING FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Each summer, hundreds of kids attend ICY Summer Camp to experience academic enrichment, recreation, the arts, and to make lifelong friends. It is a reality that in today’s economy many working parents cannot afford to send their kids to camp, so they leave even their young kids home alone. This summer, you can help Send a Kid to Camp with your donation. It will be an experience they will never forget, and neither will you.
