Erwin Aschenwald & Die Mayrhofner He is arguably one of Zillertal’s most legendary musicians and one of the last true originals in the valley - we are talking about Erwin Aschenwald, otherwise known as Schotter Erwin. His musical ability is unique, his songs are characterised by their intimate and honest lyrics and his style of playing the violin is unrivalled. There is, however, even more to Erwin than what is written above. Erwin grew up in a modest family, as the son of a hunter and his loving wife. He spent most of his childhood together with his siblings in the Stilluptal Valley, the “Valley of Waterfalls”. He developed a great love for music as a small boy and wrote his own songs, which he sang whilst herding the cows. Erwin was given a button accordion as a young man, which he practised diligently, resulting in him winning the “Austrian Accordion Master” title in 1982. Erwin worked as a lifeguard at Mayrhofen outdoor pool at that time. The children loved listening to him practising on his accordion - which was the best audience for him - As children make no bones about telling you what they really think. It was there that he met his lovely future wife, Uschi. They got married and were blessed with five children, all of whom have inherited his talent for making music. His musical career continued to flourish and Erwin decided to earn his living as a professional musician and composer. In addition to the accordion, Erwin plays the violin, guitar, bass, piano, .... in a nutshell, Erwin is a highly skilled instrumentalist. And a poet. And a composer. Together with his sons Erwin Jr., Michael and his friends Thomas Partl and Ulli Huber, die Mayrhofer have carved out their very own niche in the popular folk music scene, as their style of music is like no other. Their high level of musical ability combined with a strong folk music vibe, is simply unmistakable. The greatest hits by Erwin Aschenwald & his Mayrhofnern include ”Schei-wi-dei-wi-du-wi-dei“, ”Ja dann fahrn ma halt nach Dubai“, “Der Sonntagsjodler“, ”Musikanten aus dem Zillertal“, and many more. Erwin Aschenwald has already penned the music and lyrics for around 500 songs. Famous bands such as Trio Alpin, Ursprung Buam, Zellberg Buam, Hansi Hinterseer, etc. sing Erwin‘s songs with enthusiasm, because his songs lead to success. Erwin is particularly fond of Slovenian music and he has maintained a close friendship with Slavko Avsenik and his Original Oberkrainer for many years. The young Aschenwalds have since taken their place in the spotlight. Erwin’s oldest son studied jazz, improvised music and piano at the Tyrolean State Conservatory, where he also also learned the ‚Steirische Harmonika’, keyboard and vocals. Michael is responsible for a cool beat on the drums and has also studied percussion at the Tyrolean State Conservatory. Thomas Partl has his own recording studio and plays the bass guitar with the Mayrhofnern. And then there is Ulli with the great voice, who comes from the mountaineering village of Ginzling. A concert by the Mayrhofner is always an unforgettable experience - and an absolute must if you get the chance to see them. On that note: Hooo-Ruck!
