Free Summer Arts in the Community Concerts a Smash Hit

MPAC and Morris Arts presented four world music and dance lunchtime concerts at the Morristown Green. Pictured: Balam Dance Theatre

Summer may have been hot, humid and rainy,

but that didn’t stop us from presenting some amazing events in the community. MPAC’s Arts in the Community connects our diverse region through a variety of arts experiences, from outdoor cultural events to fun family movies. Over 5,000 people took advantage of these free summer programs. From our 9th annual Music Beyond Borders world music concert series in conjunction with Morris Arts, to new programs, such as Concerts at Vail and at 70 South Gallery, MPAC offered 17 free community events from June-August.

70 South Gallery hosted a variety of artists from hip-hop to local folk, pop and rock groups to events by documentary filmmakers and a veterans group. Pictured: Sane/Insane

project Grand Slam

Bad weather may have moved a few of them indoors, but that didn’t prevent people from coming out and having a blast. Most notably, Salsa Under the Stars drew about 250 people dressed to the nines to dance the night away at St. Peter’s Parish Hall, the rain site for the outdoor event.

The summer Arts in the Community season culminated with a free outdoor concert by Mama D and the Vexations followed by a free indoor concert by Project Grand Slam. The event also featured many local vendors.

A new twist to our free movies this summer was a relaxed showing of Sing! for families with children on the autism spectrum and other special needs.

Mama D & The Vexations

MPAC Arts in the Community will continue with additional events to be announced throughout this season. iMPACt

MPAC Board Chairman Joseph M. Goryeb to be honored at Casino Royale-themed gala Get set for an elegant and fun evening at The Mayo Performing Arts Center’s 20th annual Casino Royale themed Starlight Ball Gala on Friday, November 16, 2018 at 6 pm at The Park Savoy Estate in Florham Park, NJ. Each year, philanthropists and lovers of the arts eagerly await MPAC’s largest fundraising event of the year, always with a fresh theme, featuring a fabulous silent auction, dancing to the Tom Costello Orchestra, and live performances by a special guest artist along with MPAC’s very own talented Performing Arts Company — a teen troupe of aspiring artists between the ages of 12–18. This year, the Bond-esque “Casino Royale” begins with a “Casino Cocktail Hour,” including bountiful

hors d’oeuvres, signature cocktails and open bar, Roulette, Craps and Black Jack tables, and is followed by a seated dinner and thrilling live auction. MPAC will honor Joseph M. Goryeb, Chairman of the Board, with the Starlight Award at this 20th Starlight Ball, for his longstanding service to and generous support of our organization. Joe’s philanthropic efforts, vision and leadership skills have helped transform MPAC into one of the premier and most successful arts organizations in the country.

The Starlight Ball is an event you do not want to miss. Co-Chair and Trustee at MPAC Marylyn McLaughlin said, “It’s amazing that we have been celebrating the MPAC for 20 years with the annual Starlight Ball! Since we opened our doors as a performing arts center in Morristown, MPAC has become the foundation for a renaissance in our area. From the world class artists we have brought to our stage, to the community outreach, to the performing arts education, to the economic impact on our town…we all have great reason to celebrate! So please buy your tickets early, consider sponsoring a table or purchasing an ad in the Ad Journal. It will be a night to remember as we honor Joe Goryeb who has ‘shaken and stirred’ our path for many of these years.”
