Friday, November 10, 2017 at 8 pm

The legendary Donny and Marie invite your family to celebrate summer with them in true Osmond fashion. A song and dance spectacular.” -- Entertainment Weekly

Fernando Varela sings what he loves, whether it is a pop hit or a Puccini aria. The Puerto Rican-born vocalist was rejected by a prestigious music school, which only fueled his determination. Luciano Pavarotti’s conductor Giancarlo Chiamarello became a trusted advisor, and he later caught the attention of producer David Foster (Celine Dion, Josh Groban). Having performed everywhere from America’s Got Talent to The White House, his story demonstrates the power of not giving up on a dream.

About the Mayo Performing Arts Center — A Nonprofit Organization Making an iMPACt in Our Community

A Brief History This year we celebrate our 80th anniversary. Built in 1937, The Community Theatre was one of New Jersey’s most popular single-screen movies houses until the advent of the multiplex in the 1970s set the stage for its closing in the 1980s. Left abandoned for nearly a decade, volunteers headed by local musicians Alexander Slobodyanik and Laryssa Krupa banded together to save the building, weed out the mushrooms growing inside and relaunch the Theatre as a performance hall in 1994. Over the past 23 years, the Theatre has undergone multiple renovations to expand our scope of operations to where we now have over 200 events on our stage annually, drawing over 200,000 patrons. An arts education program launched in 2005 has grown to be a core component of our organization. Our economic impact on the region is in excess of $15 million annually. The Theatre was honored as Outstanding Historic Theatre by the League of Historic American Theatres in 2016 for its historical and continuing impact in our community.

The headliners on the marquee tell only part of our story. Look beyond the spotlight and you’ll see what really makes MPAC shine. MPAC is dedicated to serving the public through education and outreach programs that make the arts a vital reason why this region is a great place to live, work and raise a family.

MPAC brings arts experiences to thousands upon thousands of children and adults beyond the names that glow on the marquee.

MPAC is an essential community partner -- working with schools, families in need and local community centers, nursing homes and hospitals to provide entertainment and arts experiences. Many of these services are provided at no cost to those who receive them. From free summer concerts on the Morristown Green to MPAC’s teen Performing Arts Company entertaining at Morris View Nursing Home, to theatre classes at Children on the Green,

Creating a Lifelong Love of the Arts MPAC strives to make the performing arts a vital component of every child’s upbringing, and to spark a lifelong interest in music, dance and culture. Over 40,000 school age children and their families are touched by MPAC programs annually, including over 25,000 children who are bused into the Theatre for school field trips. For some kids, it’s the first time they’ve seen a live performance. Thousands more are served through residency programs at area schools or through ticketed family events. Hundreds of children partake in our performing arts school. Our annual spring musical gives dozens of young performers an opportunity to work on a fully-staged production, guided by a professional production team.

Spotlight on Education The MPAC Performing Arts School serves over 650 children annually in a nurturing and inclusive environment. More than just theatre instruction, the PAS creates an environment where friends are made, skills are honed and everyone roots for each other. We have never turned away a student due to inability to pay. Every year, upwards of $5,000-$8,000 in scholarships are offered.

children with special needs to find their voice through the performing arts. We plan to increase the number of classes we have this year to serve more of these children as well as stage “relaxed” events that modify the performance experience to make our shows more inclusive for those with special needs.

Your Trusted Community Partner MPAC offers free movies, concerts and events throughout the year with community partners to create opportunities for everyone to share in arts experiences without economic barriers. MPAC is a charter member of the newly formed Morristown Cultural District (MCD), along with Morristown Library,

In January 2017, we launched classes based on the methodology of The Miracle Project, which uses theatre training a means for

St. Peter’s Church, The Presbyterian Church of Morristown and Jockey Hollow Restaurant. The purpose of the MCD is to give back to the Morristown community that has supported us throughout our historic tenures. The Morristown Cultural District actively inspires spirit, body and mind within the community.

Looking to the Future Morristown is bursting with energy and excitement and we are proud to be at the center of its expanding arts scene. MPAC is where our community comes together to be inspired, entertained and uplifted by the passion and power of the performing arts. It’s hard to imagine Morristown without MPAC as its cultural heart. As we look toward the future, we hope to host even more education programs with an expanded facility that will serve as Morristown’s newest and most dynamic performing arts space. We will continue to work with the town to find parking solutions and ways to enlarge our venue to house these important initiatives. If you enjoy what you see on our stage, if you believe the arts are important to a town’s fabric, if you come again and again, year after year, please consider helping us sustain and grow these programs. See page 35 for information about how you can support MPAC.
