2023 Annual Report

MESSAGE FROM TOM

Greetings!

Countless people know and depend on the YMCA, but the Y is so much more than many people realize. In addition to being the place where children learn to swim or adults go for their daily workout, the Y responds to needs of our community. We’re dedicated to nurturing the potential of every child and teen, improving the community’s health and well-being, and providing support to our neighbors. As a non-profit, mission-based organization, we exist to support and strengthen the Marshall area.

2023 was a time of reflection. Our 20th Anniversary provided an opportunity to recognize those who were instrumental in our creation and celebrate our many accomplishments. Simultaneously, we were focused on the continued recovery from the effects of the COVID pandemic, and looking towards a future of growth, collaboration, and a thriving YMCA.

As each day passes, we will continue to challenge ourselves with the question “How best can the YMCA serve our community?” And as the needs of our community evolve, so will the work of our YMCA.

LONG-TIME DONORS HAVE STRONG BELIEF IN YMCA’S VALUE

Generosity strengthens bonds between individuals and communities. It builds trust, empathy, and cooperation, which are essential for healthy relationships and societies. Our altruistic donors provide consistent support for the YMCA and greater Marshall area. They share a common perspective of the Y as a community hub that is welcoming and inclusive, providing a sense of purpose, connecting residents, and buildinga thriving community for all.

Generosity comes in many forms. Whether through giving of their time and talent or making a lasting impact through estate planning, donors have the flexibility to choose how they want to make a difference based on their values, resources, and personal circumstances. It’s your Y, and we invite all to support our mission as we enter our 21st year of service.

SHARON & PAT HENNEN

“Our dollars are like votes. When we shop at local businesses or donate to local non-profits, we are voting for that entity to remain in our community. The YMCA is a community gathering spot where people can work on individual and community goals. Our community is stronger for it, and we vote for the YMCA to succeed.”

DR. VINCE LAPORTE

“Join us at the YMCA, where community thrives! With a commitment to safety and inclusivity, we offer a welcoming environment for individuals and families alike. Our facilities provide a safe space for exercise and recreation, where you can explore various health and safety topics to enhance your well-being.

At the YMCA, social engagement is at the heart of what we do. Whether you’re looking to meet new friends, join group classes, or participate in community events, there’s something for everyone here.

We believe in the power of education and opportunity. Thanks to our generous donors, we’re able to provide scholarships to those in need, ensuring that everyone has access to the resources they need to thrive.

For the young and the young at heart, our drone club offers a unique opportunity to learn and explore. From beginners to experts, kids of all ages can participate in exciting activities that foster creativity and innovation.

Join us at the YMCA and discover a place where health, safety, and community come together. Come be a part of something special!”

BRAD GRUHOT

“The Marshall Area YMCA is a place where everyone can go for a safe and healthy environment no matter what stage of life you are in! Altruistic donors ensure individuals and families who are lacking financial resources have access to Y amenities and programs, building a thriving community for all.”

SUE MORTON

“Why the Y? It is a place where you can find your sense of purpose by connecting with opportunities to improve your health, enjoy family time in the pool, and watch your kids grow in body, mind and spirit. It is a place to make new friends and share quality time with old friends. All of these actions contribute to a stronger, healthier, diverse community.”

ANDREW SUBY

“One of the most rewarding parts of owning my business is being able to give back to the community. I am happy to support the Y in its efforts. Its programs bring stability, health, and fun to the community - all of which are all pillars for togetherness and engagement that help us live an interactive lifestyle.”

TELLING THE STORIES OF COMMUNITY SUPPORT

SOCIAL CONNECTIONS ARE KEY TO THE FOREVERWELL PROGRAM

Visit the Y on any weekday morning and you’ll likely see older adults participating in a class, working out, playing Pickleball, or socializing over coffee. The ForeverWell program is designed exclusively for older adults, ages 55+, and focuses on five dimensions of well-being in older adulthood: mind, body, spirit, community, and nature. ForeverWell is a flexible model, and programming includes exercise classes, social events, educational programs, volunteer opportunities, and outdoor activities. ForeverWell also connects older adults to resources in their communities to help improve their health and well-being.

ForeverWell outcomes reported by Y staff and ForeverWell participants included improvements in health and well-being, reduced social isolation, and increased community connections.

PHYSICAL BENEFITS

Adults 55 and older are at a higher risk for falls. Regular physical activity is proven to improve strength and flexibility which leads to improved balance and coordination.

MENTAL HEALTH BENEFITS

Participating in regular physical activity can also lead to improved mental health and cognitive function.

SOCIAL BENEFITS

Maintaining strong social connections is important for older adults. Our group exercise classes and social and learning programs provide a great opportunity to meet new friends and build connections.

The best year yet!

SUMMER ADVENTURE CAMP PROVIDES SELF-CONFIDENCE, FRIENDSHIPS, & FUN

The YMCA offers a summer day camp that develops. self-confidence, instills values, and nurtures social relationships with others as campers work and play together in a cooperative manner. Throughout the summer, campers learn how to grow their own produce in garden club, take field trips to explore local areas, and serve the community through volunteerism. Swimming tops the list of favorite activities, followed by STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) activities, and gym games.

Day Camp provides a childcare option that is also an adventure for my daughter.

We like the variety of activities and especially appreciate the educational component; daily reading time ensures by child is ready for the school year.”

WATER SAFETY –JUMP, PUSH, TURN, GRAB, AND SWIM

We are proud to be a leader in the community when it comes to water safety. Year round you can find our highly skilled and qualified instructors leading a variety of swimming lessons. By utilizing the YUSA Safety Around Water Program and YMCA Swim Lesson curriculums, we can ensure that all participants gain the skills needed to be safe. In Minnesota, drowning is the second leading cause of death for children between the ages of 1 to 14. We strive to ensure all children in the Marshall area are water safe by providing partial scholarships through our Y Partners Scholarship Fund and 100 annual no fee lessons through a YUSA grant. The Marshall YMCA also offers multiple aquatic trainings throughout the year for lifeguards and swim instructors. By doing this, we can ensure even those who do not swim in our pool have qualified staff at area pools and beaches wherever they may live.

CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF IMPACT

HOW WE CELEBRATED

CEO ROUND TABLE COMMUNITY MEMBER INTERVIEWS

THE SOCIAL

We closed out the year with an incredible fundraising event. Read more about it on the next page.

OUR HISTORY

The Marshall Area YMCA began in the summer of 2000 with the formation of a volunteer board of directors under the name of the Marshall Area Community Center, Inc. (MACC, Inc.). This group of dedicated individuals was charged with researching and developing a facility that could meet the community’s needs for space for special events, socialization, and leisure services. This effort was originally made possible through a matching gift from Schwan’s Sales Enterprises which pledged up to $5,000,000 in matching funds towards the construction of such a facility.

Over the next year, these volunteers worked hard in several capacities: researching community needs, visiting successful community centers, fundraising, and designing a facility. Through this process, the volunteers became aware of, and impressed with, the mission and operational success of YMCAs. More and more, those volunteers believed that a YMCA would best meet the needs of the Marshall area. On June 1, 2001, the Board of Directors voted to change the name of the organization to the Marshall Area YMCA.

Throughout this time, the volunteers were working diligently to match the entire $5,000,000 gift from Schwan’s. In June 2001 the community celebrated the success of the volunteers’ campaign with $5,000,000 in matching funds pledged from businesses, organizations, and individual community members. This was the largest capital fundraising endeavor in Marshall’s history and is a testament to the altruism of our businesses and citizens.

The YMCA started conducting programs in the Marshall area in the spring of 2002, including teen programs, gymnastics, and camp.

The YMCA Social was the capstone event to our 20th Anniversary celebrations. On November 2, more than 150 community members gathered to support the Marshall Area YMCA’s financial assistance program, ensuring no one is turned away from the Y due to financial hardship. Event attendees enjoyed a night of “Kings & Queens” featuring popular casino games like Blackjack, 3-Card Poker, Roulette, and Craps. A raffle, photo booth, and great food and drinks from the Hitching Post helped make it a night to remember!
