Duet for Cello & Piano is based around several themes and the idea of limitations. Each movement has a different limitation until later in the third movement where the Violincello finally breaks free and both instruments move into the flowing and limitless fourth.
I: Restricted by the pitch of the themes, so that only certain pitches appear either in sequence or as a chord.
II: Combines several themes at the extremes of range, in a fast paced detached and repetitive form that becomes increasingly restricted in range.
III: Expansive, varying the main themes used earlier. Although the Piano is restricted to the same patterns, the Violoncello becomes increasingly expressive.
IV: The final movement presents the only true melody, which is referred to earlier in the piece. Both instruments play romantically and become progressively higher, eventually floating away in a semi-improvised finale.
