WATER-DRIVEN BREATHING SKIN - THE URBAN BREATHER HOMEOSTASIS, THE GENESIS OF OUR RESEARCH IN SMART MATERIALS, IS THE FUNDAMENTAL MECHANISM FOR ORGANISMS TO MAINTAIN AN EQUILIBRIUM IN PHYSILOGICAL VARIABLES THAT SUSTAIN LIVES.THE QUESTION WHETHER A SMART MATERIAL SYSTEM CAN FUNCTION AS SIMPLY AS ORGANIC ACTIVITIES LEADS US INTO THE EXPLORATION OF A SERIES OF MATERIALS THAT RESEMBLES SUCH. GLASS CURVING AS WATER, GLASS IS TRANSPARENT, IT REFRACTS AND REFLECTS, REACHES AN ALMOST LIQUID STATE WHEN SUBJECT TO HEAT, IT IS, IN A CERTAIN WAY, MALLEABLE AND SETTLES INTO SIMPLE PLANAR SURFACES OR POTENTIALLY COMPLEX CURVED GEOMETRIES. THE PROCESS OF FORMING GLASS IS HOWEVER COMPLEX DUE TO THE HIGH TEMPERATURES OF ITS FUSION POINT, AND THE PECULIAR CHARACTERISTICS OF ITS MOLDING. sound scape FABRICATION PROCESS - CNC MILLING TIME TAKEN - 35 MINS MACHINE TIME MATERIAL USED - CORIAN 12MM THK STARTED AS AN IDEA TO EXPERIMENT WITH THE ORGANIC PATTERNS CREATED WITH SOUND WAVES AND TEST THE CNC MILLING TECHNIQUE TO THE FULLEST POTENTIAL. WE FOCUSED ON EXPLOITING THE RHINOCAM TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT. THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF OUR DESIGN PROCESS WAS TO CREATE AN INTERESTING PATTERN DERIVED MERELY OUT OF SOUND WAVES AND ENHANCE THE QUALITY OF LIGHT THROUGH THE CORIAN MATERIAL. WE DERIVED THE WAVES OF SOUND FROM A SONG - “DON’T MISS A SUNDAY” IN THE FORM OF CURVES USING PROCESSING; TRANSLATED THESE CURVES INTO A SURFACE USING RHINO & GRASSHOPPER. FINALLY, TO DO JUSTICE TO OUR CONCEPT, WE USED VARIOUS PARAMETERS OF RHINOCAM TO ACHIEVE THE FINAL TEXTURE OF OUR LAMP.

STARTED AS AN IDEA TO EXPERIMENT WITH AN ORGANIC FORM. THE GYROID IS AN INFINITELY CONNECTED PERIODIC MINIMAL SURFACE CONTAINING NO STRAIGHT LINES.

TO TEST THE 3D PRINTING TO THE FULLEST POTENTIAL. WE CAME ACROSS A FORM - “GYROID” WHICH REALLY FASCINATED US. WE STARTED EXPLORING AND REALISED IT WAS DOABLE. NEVERTHELESS, WE WENT HANDS-ON IN RHINO AND MADE A NUMBER OF ADDITIONS AND DELETIONS. FOR OUR TEST PRINT, WE HAD A MODULE. ONCE IT WAS TWO AND HALF HOURS PRINTED, HAVING DISCUSSED FURTHER, WE REALISED THE AMENDMENTS AND IMPROVED THE FORM FURTHER BY REMOVING THE PERFORATIONS AND STRENGTHENING OUR BRIDGES. WE ALSO DECIDED TO PRINT THE FINAL WITH A TRANSLUCENT MATERIAL RATHER THAN THE OPAQUE. FINALLY, CAME THE FORM, COMPLETELY ORGANIC AND IN LAYERS.

the gyroid : minimal surface THE JURONG LAKE GARDEN IS ENVISIONED TO BE A PEOPLE’S GARDEN - OUR FIRST NATIONAL GARDENS IN THE HEARTLANDS, ONE THAT PEOPLE FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE CAN ACCESS AND RELATE TO. TO SUPPORT THIS NOBLE VISION, THE SCHEME DEVELOPED A JURONG WELLNESS RHYTHM THAT WILL PERMEATE THROUGH THE GARDENS. THE INTENTION IS TO TRANSFORM THIS URBAN OASIS INTO A CULTURALLY MEANINGFUL AND PROGRAMMATICALLY REFRESHING DESTINATION THAT FUNDAMENTALLY IMPROVES THE WELLBEING OF PEOPLE AND OUR ENVIRONMENT. JURONG WELLNESS RHYTHM IS INSPIRED BY THE CONCEPT OF CIRCADIAN RHYTHM - THE INNATE BIO-RHYTHM IN ALL LIVING THINGS THAT REGULATE PHYSIOLOGICAL PROCESSES. BY EXAMINING THE CIRCADIAN RHYTHMS IN OUR NATURAL AND MANMADE SURROUNDINGS, THE SCHEME DERIVES AN OVERARCHING RHYTHM THAT WEAVES TOGETHER THE DIVERSE NEEDS OF OUR URBAN LIVES AND THE SENSITIVE CONDITIONS OF THE FLORA AND FAUNA IN OUR SURROUNDINGS. SINGAPLURAL PROJECT X : THE HIVE 2016

In collaboration with Luxx NewHouse, our installation features a surface design system composed of a series of modules made of LG HIMACS. The practical solution to this system is a set of customisable modules - ours is simply one suggestion of its form and application. The result is a system that can grow and change, that is unpredictable in a systematic manner. We took our inspiration from live systems in nature where this sort of systematic unpredictability exists. The end product - this particular system is thus named, HIVE.

With Project X, we wanted to think of solid surface in a different way. From our experience, it is a very predictable and precise material, the exact reason why it is so successful. However, we find that the end product is usually fixed with little to no flexibility thereafter for the end users to play around with. We wanted to break down that process.

Summary of project: In this age of information, we are constantly distracted by the constant flow of data, and we lose focus on what is truly important in our existence. The decision for a multi-sensorial spatial proposal stems from this critique of the reduced human experience. Addressing the theme of ‘senses’, we respond by creating an immersive and consuming space that minimises the distractions that surround us every day, even for a brief moment.

Our proposal for Project X is an installation that contains a spatial experience within in an attempt to unite light, space, and solid surface. Solid surface is conceived as a system - customisable modular elements that provide end users with greater flexibility and unlimited possibilities in configuration.
