a statement on the work from playwright, david zheng
I started writing Kidnapping Jane Doe after watching an episode of Anthony Bourdain’s Parts Unknown. During his visit to Georgia, which at the time was undergoing crazy political turmoil, he asks his host how people deal with what’s going on. His host turns to him and tells a story about a group of young men who kidnapped the president of Georgia, traveled to some remote cabin far up in the mountains, and spent the week doing what man does best — getting drunk.
And then I thought about how, if my friends and I were to advocate for we want, if we had the opportunity to do something about our future, we might not necessarily write letters or make calls or sign petitions. We might do something as radical as forcibly invite our political leaders to the Bronx and grab a slice with them. Maybe we take them to The Bronx Zoo, or to my cousin's Chinese restaurant, or to the sweet old lady selling Icee’s out her apartment window. Maybe I’d take them to a block party in the summer and show em how we get down and how everyone gets a plate no matter who you are. And maybe somewhere in that unconventional exchange, a real change can happen. Now I’m not saying that’s the way to go about it but you never know, you know?
I wrote Kidnapping Jane Doe during my residency at The Public. I am so happy to bring it to MaYi where I have continuously received a generous amount of support and space to make it all possible.

a statement on the work from playwright, sung rno
This was one of my pandemic plays and was originally inspired by actually winning a short film contest and flying out to LA with my collaborator (who happens to be directing this play as well). But as I started writing, the ghosts of Pirandello kept seeping into the story like smoke coming in under the door. A powerful memory was seeing Six Characters in Search of an Author at A.R.T. way back in college. An equally powerful memory was reading about the Boxer Rebellion in history class; at first it seemed so absurd that these fighters, who had nothing but their spirit and their fists, would even dare take on the Western soldiers armed with guns and cannons. But in a time where we are up against so many forces that seem so much stronger than us—global pandemics, primal longsimmering hatreds, fear for anyone different—their acts started to feel brave and principled. And anyone who has tried to put pen to paper or light to film knows that the forces arrayed against us are every bit as dangerous as those cannons. But like the Boxers, we keep on fighting…
