A MESSAGE FROM OUR CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD

Reflecting on who we are as an organization, and on our mission, I am reminded of William Wordsworth who wrote about that best portion of a good man’s life: “his little, nameless, unremembered acts of kindness and love… .”

In this Annual Report, you’ll read about acts of kindness from caring partners, and a May Institute community of committed and passionate professionals. Together, they add every day to the quality of life of the individuals we serve and, ultimately, transform lives in significant ways.

The opening of the Todd Fournier Center for Employment Training and Community Inclusion in April of 2012 is one example of this impact. May Institute opened this Center to help young people with autism learn tasks and build skills to help them secure meaningful employment and greater independence. Raising awareness that individuals on the spectrum who receive the right types of interventions can be active members of their communities is not only a noble goal, but also a fact of organizational life at May Institute.

Helping individuals and families change their lives for the better demands an uncompromising commitment to the highest standards of behavioral healthcare, education, and rehabilitation. Together with May Institute’s new leadership team and exemplary staff, and your support, the Board of Trustees will ensure that the resources are in place to meet this commitment. A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

The addage of “it takes a village” comes to mind for me as I reflect back on 2012 and the vibrant and extended community that played a key role in supporting and sustaining May Institute.

2012 was a year of transitions for May Institute. I stepped into my new role of President and CEO with equal doses of humility, trepidation, and tremendous excitement. Leading an organization of this size and breadth requires a talented and dedicated leadership team and an exceptional staff. And it requires true partnerships that strengthen and energize our mission. We are fortunate enough at May Institute to have all three.

From local businesses to national corporate supporters... from generous board members to the active parents of the children and adults we serve... and from staff who add fundraising to their full plates to the thousands of individuals who make the effort to make a gift each year — these all form the “community of kindness” that defines May Institute.

Since its founding nearly 60 years ago, our organization has evolved into a national network that serves thousands of individuals and their families annually. With corporate headquarters in Randolph, Mass., May Institute operates 165 service locations across the country.

For a young child with ASD or a related disability, early diagnosis and intervention can significantly impact life outcomes. Through our Assessment Centers, we offer diagnostic evaluations and therapeutic treatment. Consultation Centers provide early intervention services and home-based therapy for children and adolescents, and help families develop effective strategies to support their children's development.

Four May Center Schools serve children and adolescents with ASD and other developmental disabilities. These May Center Schools are nationally recognized for combining best practices from the fields of applied behavior analysis (ABA) and special education.

Another state-of-the-art school provides services to students with acquired brain injury or neurological disease.

Through our work with school systems, we provide consultation services for students with special needs, and offer technical assistance and consultation to administrators and teachers on implementing school-wide Positive Behavior Support strategies.

These services promote student achievement by improving the school’s behavioral climate.

Our Mission: May Institute is a nonprofit organization that provides educational and rehabilitative services for individuals, and families of individuals, with autism, developmental disabilities, neurological and behavioral disorders, and mental illness. We conduct and disseminate the results of research concerning the education and rehabilitation of these individuals. We also train and consult with professionals and organizations serving these individuals.

Our Vision: We work to provide the highest possible standard of behavioral healthcare, education, and rehabilitation. We care deeply about each person we serve and about each other as professionals. We seek to continually learn and apply best practices and to share our knowledge. Our Centers reflect the May Institute’s core values: fairness, diversity, accountability, and results. Together, we work to create new and more effective ways to meet the special needs of individuals and families in our numerous service locations.

We also serve military families who have children with ASD, and operate multiple regional centers offering ABA therapy to all branches of the military — Army, Marines, Air Force, Navy, and Coast Guard.

May Institute is the first nonprofit human services organization in the country to receive top national honors from the Society for the Advancement of Behavior Analysis (SABA) and the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT). We received the 2005 Outstanding Training Program Award from ABCT and the 2007 Award for Enduring Programmatic Contributions in Behavior Analysis from SABA.

Each Center is guided by a senior manager with extensive experience and/or clinical expertise. May Centers for Adult Services offer a wide range of

These services include residential group homes and supported living apartments, as well as day habilitation, vocational training, and supported employment. As an extension of our adult services in Florida, we provide specialized residential programming for a small number of older adolescents with significant behavioral needs.

May Center Schools for Autism and Developmental Disabilities are May Institute's private special education schools. Our four schools in Massachusetts and California are nationally recognized for combining best practices from the fields of applied behavior analysis (ABA) and special education. Students receive highly individualized behavioral, academic, and vocational programming. Many of our students also receive residential services through a variety of community-based group homes.

May Center School for Brain Injury and Related Disorders is a private special education school in Brockton, Mass. It is nationally recognized for providing services to children, adolescents, and young adults with acquired brain injury or neurological disease. The school is one of only a handful of pediatric programs in the U.S. that focus on both education and rehabilitation. Families have the option of combining school services with on-campus or community-based residential programs.

Our broad range of Massachusetts-based therapeutic services include school-based treatment, psychological and neuropsychological testing, group therapy, and therapeutic after-school and wrap-around services. We also provide a child abuse education and prevention program to school districts. In fiscal year 2012, we served adults with a wide range of severe psychiatric disorders through community-based psychosocial clubhouse programs, day treatment, adult day health, community support, job skills training and supported employment, and crisis stabilization.

CENTER FOR THE PROMOTION OF EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE National Autism Center is dedicated to supporting effective, evidence-based treatment approaches for autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and to providing direction to families, practitioners, organizations, policy-makers, and funders. The Center identifies effective programming, shares practical information with families about how to respond to the challenges they face, conducts applied research, and develops training and service models for practitioners. Finally, the Center works to shape public policy concerning ASD and its treatment through the development and dissemination of national standards of practice.

In this fiscal year, the National Autism Center published a new manual, "A Parent's Guide to Evidence-Based Practice and Autism." Co-authored by professionals and parents of children with autism, the manual reached a national audience through online and print distribution. The Center also launched its next major project: a review and analysis of treatments for ASD based on research conducted in the field since 2007. This new project, slated for release in 2014, will include studies evaluating treatments for adults, which have never been systematically evaluated.

TRAINING AND RESEARCH CENTERS May Center for Advanced Studies offers lifelong learning opportunities to May Institute employees. A wide array of educational programs, offered in conjunction with top colleges and universities, is designed to meet the needs of employees at every stage of their education and career — from those just beginning to work in the human services field, to those in pre- and post-doctoral programs, as well as senior-level staff attaining advanced licenses and credentials.

May Center for Applied Research and Peer Review directs, supervises, and coordinates research activities at May Institute. The Center also directs and supports comprehensive research activities within our educational and healthcare services. This Center supports an active agenda of publication in peer-reviewed journals as well as professional presentations at national and international conferences.

May Center for International Training and Support is one of the May Institute's newest Centers, launched to respond to international demand for evaluation, training, mentoring, and treatment of autism spectrum disorder and other developmental disabilities.

ACCREDITATION In fiscal year 2012, May Institute’s educational services received a three-year accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).

All of May Institute’s programs that have undergone the CARF accreditation process have earned three-year accreditation. This constitutes one of the largest and most comprehensive accreditations CARF has ever awarded to a network of behavioral programs.

Program Highlights New Center Prepares Students with Autism for Employment Statistics reveal that only 18.6 percent of people with disabilities are employed (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2010) and young adults with autism are three to four times less likely to be employed than other young adults with disabilities. To help students at our May Center School in Randolph, Mass., transition into meaningful jobs and an independent adulthood, May Institute opened the Todd Fournier Center for Employment Training and Community Inclusion on the Randolph campus in April 2012.

Our vocational education facility is designed to help students learn important job and independent living skills through practicing tasks in a supportive environment that looks, feels, and functions like an actual workplace. Our students practice life skills and job tasks in retail, hotel, and cafĂŠ/restaurant suites. These experiences move them closer towards their personal goals of securing meaningful employment and greater independence.

Special appreciation is extended to the Town of Randolph, Mass., for its tremendous support for the Center.

This community partnership is opening internship and employment opportunities to assist our students in building the required skill set necessary to secure and maintain employment and independent living in our communities.

Military Families Benefit from CVS Caremark Charitable Trust Learning and practicing social skills is high on the list of what parents of children on the spectrum want for their young ones. However, finding the opportunities and resources to accomplish this goal can be challenging, particularly for families in the military.

During fiscal year 2012, our staff conducted two eight-week long “social skills” groups for children ages 8 –12 and 3 – 6 in the Camp Lejeune region, thanks to the generosity of and support from CVS Caremark Charitable Trust. The program was tailored to meet the needs of these children and military families. It offered the children invaluable social skills training, and practice techniques to use with parents and peers.

As a result of the educational series, parents reported that children were having more success interacting with others at school and in the community: 83 percent of children showed gains in their communication skills. Several parents noted how conversation skills were developing, with one saying, “My son started to ask me how my day was on the way home from the group!”

The program was a success, not only for the children and families, but also in building community. The Jacksonville Daily News featured the series, and local firefighters visited the children to teach them about their work as firefighters and rescue personnel.

Fundraising Highlights Pedaling for a Purpose!

Forty-five May Institute riders pedaled a combined total of 1,900 miles to raise funds for children’s programs in Massachusetts, as we proudly participated for our fifth year in the Rodman Ride for Kids, a matching gift charity event that benefits children's social service agencies across Massachusetts. With the help of staff, board members, business partners, families, and corporate sponsors, and a 10 percent matching gift from Don Rodman, we raised $189,162. Strong support from corporate sponsors included Stephen H. Peck & Associates/UBS, Todson, Inc., Merrill Lynch, R.P. Masiello, Telamon Insurance & Financial Network, and Fenno Trust.

Combating Autism on the Homefront May Institute and the National Autism Center (NAC) were proud to participate in the 2011 Combined Federal Campaign (CFC), the largest workplace giving program in America. Federal, postal, and military donors across the world donated more than $40,000 to May Institute and more than $186,000 to NAC. Funds allowed May Institute to provide specialized care and support services to military families who have a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), especially military families living on bases with limited services. The donations raised for NAC helped fund timely diagnosis and necessary assessments and dissemination of critical information about ASD.

A COMMUNITY OF KINDNESS Our Food Pantry, located at May Institute’s Behavioral Health Clinic in West Roxbury, Mass., meets an important community need. Every week, the pantry offers food assistance to our clients — individuals living with persistent mental illness — as well as to an increasing number of residents in the Greater Boston area.

In fiscal year 2012, Project Bread and the People’s Federal Savings Bank Foundation offered critical grant support to stock our food pantry shelves, allowing us to further help struggling families who rely on May Institute for nutritious food to feed themselves and their children.

A COMMUNITY OF KINDNESS On the First Friday of every month, galleries and businesses in Santa Cruz, Calif., open their doors to exhibit the work of community artists. One gallery, Twist, featured artwork created by students at our Bay School on one of those Fridays. Working with a “reusable” theme, students manipulated egg crates, bottle tops, buttons, license plates, soda cans, and much more to create beautiful pieces of art. A COMMUNITY OF KINDNESS Through its Associates in Action program, five enthusiastic Kohl’s employees volunteered to help make our Children’s Services’ BINGO event a success.

Money raised benefited What’s Cookin’, a series that provides opportunities for low-income parents to bond with their children within the context of learning how to cook together. These children have experienced severe trauma; exposure to normal activities helps them to feel safe and establish routines. With help from Kohl’s volunteers, we raised more than $3,500 to purchase fresh foods and hire a chef to conduct cooking sessions.

A COMMUNITY OF KINDNESS The HEAL Foundation provides educational programs and camps tailored to the needs of the autism community in Northeast Florida. In fiscal year 2012, adults in our residential programs in Clay and Duval counties benefited from the Foundation’s generosity. Thanks to a grant, our residents went on an “Academic Road Trip,” visiting a number of education and recreational sites in the area. The Academic Road camp was unique in that it was a “camp in the community,” raising awareness about autism and creating wonderful community experiences for the adults in our care.
