‘the revenant’ Dicaprio’s gritty depiction as fur trapper Hugh Glass isn’t just astonishing; it’s pretty much the truth. Although the majority of what we know about Glass’s life is speculation, we know for certain he was attacked by a Bear, putting him on the map as a Frontier legend. in the summer of 1823, Glass was near his Fur-trapping party after joining the expedition just five months earlier. Along the Missouri river a grizzly and her two cubs were stumbled upon by an unfortunate Glass. in her shock she leapt upon him, tearing at his skin, puncturing his throat and breaking his leg, before finally his companions took her down with multiple bullets. two of the party were instructed to stay with Glass until he died and subsequently give him a Christian burial, but as the legend goes, Glass refused to die. Aware that their fellow trappers were getting further away with each passing day, Fitzgerald convinced Bridger to leave Glass to the elements in a shallow grave. this was the beginning of a six week long survival test to the nearest encampment 200 miles away. throughout his travels, Glass reportedly ate a rattlesnake and awoke to find a Grizzly licking maggots from his wounds. Unlike the film however, Glass does not wreak bloody revenge on Fitzgerald, but forgives both him and Bridger. MAYHeMMAG |

‘the danish Girl’ A heart rending tale of human benevolence, The Danish Girl shines a light on the incredible story of Lili elbe, a transgender woman living in a time when sexuality was black and white. Although the film has received critical outcries from a number of people familiar with elbe’s story due to its grandiose, ‘typically’ Hollywood take on this sensitive tale of raw humanity and woe, the vein of the story remains the same. In the spring of May 1, 1930, einar Wegener was going to commit suicide. His torment was too much to bear, for despite being a woman, he had been born into the body of a man. His marriage to a talented and steadfast female painter,

‘sPotliGht’ spotlight as faithfully as possible, follows the story of the editors and reporters Walter robinson, Michael rezendes, sacha Pfeiffer, Ben Bradlee Jr., Matt carroll, and Marty Baron. This small investigatory team in Boston broke the lock on the closely guarded secret of the catholic church into mainstream media, exposing

Gerda Wegener, was happy if unconventional, for she became Lili’s greatest advocate, painting her numerous times and introducing Lili at parties as einar’s sister. Lili however became increasingly depressed and unwell, until she met Magnus Hirschfield, a pre-eminent leader in the research of sexuality and sexual reassignment surgery. Wegener’s testicles and penis were removed, with ovaries grafted into his body and eventually, a fatal womb transplant which ended Lili’s life on september 13th, 1931. A tragic but mesmerizing story that stands at the dawn of sexual revolution, with cinematography rated second to none.

an abusive priest and the young parishioners he continually exploited. On Jan. 6th, 2002, The Boston Globe sent the story to print, illuminating abuser John J Geoghan’s heinous sexual crimes against children. This single report opened the floodgates, and since then hundreds, if not thousands have come forward claiming sexual abuse by authorities within the church. In 2003 the spotlight team won The Pulitzer Prize for a series of reports published on the systemic concealment of abuse. An incredible story that uncovers the depravity of one individual claiming to offer moral leadership to those under his care, and the eventual demise of a debauched and corrupt operation.
