find your inner peace

INSTANT KarMa!

Mindfulness In the same way that meditation allows you to tap into your inner consciousness in a particular moment of your day, mindfulness is having an awareness of one’s conscious experience moment by moment. Awareness is important for positive and negative emotions, knowing when you are in a situation that is giving you emotional pain, is our body’s way of telling us to change our behaviours or actions. Learn to avoid negative people, turn off depressing news, take a break from your desk at lunchtime. In short surround yourselves with positivity, use daily affirmations – words, quotes, favourite songs that speak to you. Take regular exercise that makes you feel good. Good examples of these include yoga, tai chi or Pilates that involve stretching and breathing exercises.

laws of attraction

Meditation We’re all aware of the concept of karma, that the actions we put out come back to influence us, both positively and negatively. On a deeper level it’s the spiritual principle of cause and effect, how we shape our lives through good karma future happiness or bad karma future suffering. What many people don’t realise though is how much control we have over these actions, for every deed, action or intent first came from our thoughts. Our unconscious mind dictates our internal reality and therefore shapes our external actions. Allow Mayhem! to guide you on a spiritual journey through the power of meditation, and mindfulness – you can thank us later! 10 mayhem! | SPRING 2016

In its simplest form it relates to a state of higher consciousness, allowing the mind to get rid of all our thoughts, renew energy levels and promote relaxation. Often imitated, it has been forever practised by numerous religions including Buddhist Monks. There are many styles and types of meditation; pick the one that fits into your life. It can be undertaken in a darkened room with lighted incense sticks, kneeing on cushions chanting mantras or with eyes closed in a quiet room away from distractions, and technology. Make it a daily discipline, a time to step away from the stresses and pressures of modern life and just be. Be aware of your breathing; be thankful for all your blessings and let go of negative emotions.

As you begin to incorporate meditation and mindfulness into your daily routine, you will become more aware of your inner energy levels. What we put out we get back, therefore if we transmit negative energy thoughts, so we shall receive negative energy actions returned. We can all relate to days when we’re running late for work, and we unconsciously transmit emotions that we simply can’t be late, and every traffic light turns red and makes us even later. On the other hand we can also transmit positive energy thoughts, remember an amazing experience of a wedding, or party when everyone was just in the moment, positive emotions just flowed. To go with the flow is a choice for a better life, to tap into and attract positive energy, people and opportunities into your life. If we can work on how we process our energy it can literally change our lives and we can become truly enlightened.

sensory enclosure

APPeAL

Each year we provide housing for approximately 50 dogs who have been removed from abusive owners by RSPCA Inspectors. It can take anything up to a year, or longer if it goes to appeal, for cases to go to court. In that time the dogs will remain with us. Some cope well, others can become very stressed which can delay rehoming when the time comes. Many of the dogs lack confidence, cowering at the back of the kennel, hiding from those they perceive as wanting to hurt them. some have been starved, most have never known what it is to be spoilt and loved. It’s these dogs we aim to help with this project. A secure, specially landscaped enclosure will allow the dogs to spend significant periods of time

out of their kennels, helping them to get used to running free, learn to play with other dogs and be around people without being afraid. For these dogs it’s not enough to have a regular fence paneled enclosure like our other areas. We need to ensure they are unable to escape by erecting a high strong wire fence that is dug deeply into the ground to stop burrowing. The

top needs to be high and angled in to prevent big dogs from jumping and scrabbling up over the top. This way dogs can be left to play together, learning to socialise and gain confidence in their surroundings. Your support will make a huge difference to the time the dogs have to stay with us.

NATION GOES SUPER-HUMAN FOR

relief

The nation in its thousands ran, swam, cycled and baked its way to a staggering record of £57 million for Sport Relief, changing countless lives both across the UK and in the world’s poorest communities.

In a generosity fever that sparked nation inspiration, more people than ever before dusted off their trainers and grabbed their whisks in a unified effort to send more children to school, fund projects to support those living with dementia and provide aid to improve the lives of thousands with mental health disorders. written By Jessica tremlett

Marathon Man One of the major highlights this year was national treasure and Marathon Man eddie Izzard, who ran an astonishing 27 marathons in 27 days in the heart of south Africa, raising almost £2million and crossing the fi nish line at the feet of the statue of Nelson Mandela in cape Town. Holding a south African flag by his side, eddie was internationally hailed and cheered on by thousands who watched his progress through the means of Twitter and Periscope. supporters flocked to his side with banners and placards to support him throughout the gruelling challenge, “we’re so proud of what he’s doing,” said one, “27 marathons in 27 days is phenomenal.”

hell on hiGh seas In light of demanding and arduous challenges, six celebrities including One show host, Alex Jones, endured a physically, mentally and emotionally challenging five day coastal trek around a section of the UK, in a BT sponsored challenge aptly named ‘Hell on High Seas.’ The laboriousness of this challenge is not to be scoffed at, the team had to live and breathe sailing. Often drenched with hardly any sleep, and keeping control of a carbon-fibre speed machine while manually lifting a sail half the size of a football pitch did, at times, seem all too daunting. However, their sterling efforts paid off, after battling storm-force winds and waves of up to 10ft, the crew’s Poseidon adventure raised a total of almost £1.1million as they sailed under London’s Tower Bridge holding brightly lit flares to signal their triumphant arrival on British shores.

Jo brand’s hell of a walK! And it doesn’t stop there. Plucky Jo Brand got stuck in with a challenge of her own with a staggering 135 mile walk from Humber to Liverpool in a mere seven days. Jo, usually known for her comically docile approach to life’s trials and tribulations, got stuck in to sport relief with ‘Jo Brand’s: Hell of a Walk.’ she was joined along the way by fellow comedian Bill Bailey, and other renowned friends such as Alan davies, davina Mccall and Billy Bragg, spurred on by fans with her own hashtag #GoJo. sport relief star John Bishop was waiting at the finish line to congratulate her on her outstanding achievement, supplemented with the news that the people of the UK had sponsored her over £655,000. Jo said “I wanted to do this to raise shed loads of money for Sport Relief, because it helps a huge amount of people. Especially projects that mean a lot to me. But also, I wanted to show fat old women that they could walk!” MAYHeMMAG |

niGht of tv The country also had the cosy option of settling down to a night of nostalgia with an Only Fools and Horses revival, which saw david Beckham transported to Peckham to star alongside david Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst, this followed by a good old fashioned chuckle at hapless hero Frank spencer played by Michael crawford in ‘Some mother’s do ‘ave ‘em!’

This year’s sport relief was the by far best yet, flushed with celebrities and sports personalities willing to go balls to the wall in an effort to help disadvantaged folk across the UK. Nurseries, schools and Youth Groups united through numerous bake sales and sporting events to help some of the poorest communities globally, while thousands more incredible individuals put themselves through their paces by trying something new to lend a hand. Well done everyone.

These, among many others including Jack Whitehall improving english football, david Walliams teaching Peter crouch how to be a lady and a star studded sketch featuring Idris elba as the nation’s favourite cool guy detective Luther.

outdoor sliPPers

written By kimBerley smith

Nope, it’s not just underwear. Outdoor slippers, or flat mules, have moved past the 2015 trends of wearing mules with chunky heels to become their own thing for 2016. At least it’s a way to get away with wearing slippers outside!

suede suede is back from the 70s, with dresses in particular becoming so popular that articles are coming out left , right and centre on how to wear a suede dress without your body overheating. A good trend while the weather is still cold, perhaps, but maybe one to ditch around summer time.

PreDICTIONS

It’s that time of year again when brands begin to release their spring/summer collections and everyone has a mad scramble to stay on top of the latest trends. But what are these fashion trends going to be in 2016?

sPider lashes Not strictly fashion, but clumpy spider Lashes (yes, that very thing makeup brands have been developing mascara to deliberately avoid) are suddenly, somehow, all over the catwalks. If you’re one of very few people who enjoys having clumpy eyelashes, 2016 might be the year for you. 18 mayhem! | SPRING 2016

half Moons Big or small, the half-moon shaped bag has been fast increasing in popularity, with victoria Beckham sporting an oversized tan bag at New York Fashion Week last year. If you’re after something more quirky, watermelon or fruity prints on small half-moon bags are bound to be huge this year.

underwear as outerwear Yes, you read it right. With bralettes becoming huge in 2015, it seems the trend has moved forward to include slips as actual dresses with silk, satin and sheer chiffon being popular fabrics. Perhaps a style to wear when it becomes too warm for your suede dress.

white shirts One of the most easily wearable catwalk trends, a simple white button-down shirt is making an appearance for spring and summer. The most versatile of trends, it can be worn fitted, loose, or really any way you fancy.

cold shoulder The cold shoulder is hardly a new trend, becoming popular in the latter half of 2015, but one returning to the catwalks with the inclusion of a cross-shaped neckline or halter necks to add to the style. MAYHeMMAG |

Get in shape

tune-uP your life WRITTEN BY Jessica tremlett

Give your body the best possible care and it will look after you in return. It’s easy to neglect what’s important, and your health might be one of the first things to take a backseat when life gets busy. Here are four quick and easy ways to start and sustain self-maintenance and combat mental health slogs and issues such as depression and anxiety.

eXercise It’s obvious, but exercise really is the best and it doesn’t have to be hard. Quick and intense 10 minute bursts can help shift extra junk in the trunk, but if you’re looking to really shift the pounds, then a good solid 60 minutes four times a week will get you on your way. When you’re feeling sluggish, a great way to look at it is even if you don’t have the greatest workout, you’ve still lapped everyone sat at home on the couch. 20 mayhem! | SPRING 2016

cut down on alcohol cut out suGar sugar is hidden under numerous different names to confuse us, making it difficult to identify what’s good to eat and what’s not. A good way to help navigate the complex world of food is to stay as close to the ground as possible. For example, buying potatoes, vegetables, fresh meat and dairy is an easy, wholesome way of making sure you’re consuming cleanly. stay away from overly colourful packaging and things that don’t go off for months on end. Additionally, watch what you drink! People often don’t count drinks on their sugar and calorie intake, squash, juices, smoothies, soda’s and some hot drinks such as hot chocolates and lattes make a profound difference to your diet. Keep it simple and stick to water where you can.

The UK are guilty of regularly binge drinking, despite the damage alcohol can do. I’m not saying cut out alcohol completely, but rather than seeing it as a minor everyday indulgence, treat it more like a rare luxury. You’ll stay in control on nights out, feel refreshed when you wake up and surpass the groggy feeling you get for days after. cutting out alcohol also helps you focus better and stay alert, both at work and socially.

no More screens before bed The bedroom is reserved for two things only, and they both begin with s. If you really want to sleep better, keep your phone in the other room. The lights and sounds rouse your brain and subtly bug you, keeping your thoughts active and preventing deep, valuable sleep. That being said, televisions are an absolute no go, keep them in the living room!

Keep it active and it’ll stay healthier for longer. subsequently, reading actual books rather than their digital cousins like e-readers has proven to help maintain the ability to store this information more easily. The explanation gets a little complicated here so you’ll just have to trust us, it’s science. 24 mayhem! | SPRING 2016

George rr Martin once said “A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies, the man who never reads lives only one.” And for anyone who’s longed to escape the mundanity of their lives, even for just for a few hours, picking up a book can do just that. delving into a post-apocalyptic world filled with flesh eating mutants, or helping to usher in a new age of dragon-less medieval merriment can offer you a real workout in those imagination muscles. But it isn’t the only advantage of burying yourself in the latest page turner. A greater sense of empathy is another welcomed side effect from reading that can aide you in your day to day life. Putting yourself in other people’s shoes, fictional or not, is something all of us can benefit from. except voldemort, he’s just wrong.

stress. We all get it from time to time. But instead of reaching for the bottle or going to town on a tub of ice cream, spend an hour with your head in a book, because a 2009 study by sussex University showed that regular reading can reduce stress up to 68%. so when you’re in the middle of battling an evil alien overlord for galactic supremacy, those unfi nished documents at work might not seem quite so important. Although try telling that to your boss while removing your Papier-Mache space helmet.

cheaP entertainMent Books are cheap. For the most part. especially the ones in the library. And over the many centuries that they’ve been in print, you’re almost guaranteed not to get through them all anytime soon. Add to that the hours of entertainment you get from just one novel and that equals great value for money.

‘the revenant’ Dicaprio’s gritty depiction as fur trapper Hugh Glass isn’t just astonishing; it’s pretty much the truth. Although the majority of what we know about Glass’s life is speculation, we know for certain he was attacked by a Bear, putting him on the map as a Frontier legend. in the summer of 1823, Glass was near his Fur-trapping party after joining the expedition just five months earlier. Along the Missouri river a grizzly and her two cubs were stumbled upon by an unfortunate Glass. in her shock she leapt upon him, tearing at his skin, puncturing his throat and breaking his leg, before finally his companions took her down with multiple bullets. two of the party were instructed to stay with Glass until he died and subsequently give him a Christian burial, but as the legend goes, Glass refused to die. Aware that their fellow trappers were getting further away with each passing day, Fitzgerald convinced Bridger to leave Glass to the elements in a shallow grave. this was the beginning of a six week long survival test to the nearest encampment 200 miles away. throughout his travels, Glass reportedly ate a rattlesnake and awoke to find a Grizzly licking maggots from his wounds. Unlike the film however, Glass does not wreak bloody revenge on Fitzgerald, but forgives both him and Bridger. MAYHeMMAG |

‘the danish Girl’ A heart rending tale of human benevolence, The Danish Girl shines a light on the incredible story of Lili elbe, a transgender woman living in a time when sexuality was black and white. Although the film has received critical outcries from a number of people familiar with elbe’s story due to its grandiose, ‘typically’ Hollywood take on this sensitive tale of raw humanity and woe, the vein of the story remains the same. In the spring of May 1, 1930, einar Wegener was going to commit suicide. His torment was too much to bear, for despite being a woman, he had been born into the body of a man. His marriage to a talented and steadfast female painter,

‘sPotliGht’ spotlight as faithfully as possible, follows the story of the editors and reporters Walter robinson, Michael rezendes, sacha Pfeiffer, Ben Bradlee Jr., Matt carroll, and Marty Baron. This small investigatory team in Boston broke the lock on the closely guarded secret of the catholic church into mainstream media, exposing

Gerda Wegener, was happy if unconventional, for she became Lili’s greatest advocate, painting her numerous times and introducing Lili at parties as einar’s sister. Lili however became increasingly depressed and unwell, until she met Magnus Hirschfield, a pre-eminent leader in the research of sexuality and sexual reassignment surgery. Wegener’s testicles and penis were removed, with ovaries grafted into his body and eventually, a fatal womb transplant which ended Lili’s life on september 13th, 1931. A tragic but mesmerizing story that stands at the dawn of sexual revolution, with cinematography rated second to none.

an abusive priest and the young parishioners he continually exploited. On Jan. 6th, 2002, The Boston Globe sent the story to print, illuminating abuser John J Geoghan’s heinous sexual crimes against children. This single report opened the floodgates, and since then hundreds, if not thousands have come forward claiming sexual abuse by authorities within the church. In 2003 the spotlight team won The Pulitzer Prize for a series of reports published on the systemic concealment of abuse. An incredible story that uncovers the depravity of one individual claiming to offer moral leadership to those under his care, and the eventual demise of a debauched and corrupt operation.

he’s one of the funniest men in hollywood, creating hilarious characters such as Ali g, Bruno and Borat. Now Sacha Baron Cohen returns to the big screen with a new incarnation – a beer-swilling, football hooligan called Nobby, who stars in ‘Grimsby’. The fi lm is set in the Lincolnshire town of Grimsby. rebel Wilson plays Nobby’s wife and the pair have nine children. The action starts when sacha’s character tracks down and meets his long lost brother. Nobby discovers his sibling sebastian, played by Mark strong, is a spy. In the process of reuniting he gets caught up in an undercover espionage mission.

The film also stars sacha’s real-life wife Isla Fisher and Oscar winner Penelope cruz. Here, sacha talks about what we can expect from his latest hilarious movie and his secret love of action films. He also looks back on his famous characters to date and talks about some of their favourite moments plus what’s coming up next for the comedy genius.

“It was a real eye opener” So Sacha, tell us how this film came about? Well, originally this guy who wrote Wreck-it Ralf, which is this really good film that I love, came in and said, ‘I’ve got this idea for a film which is James Bond’s brother.’ And I started thinking, ‘Oh right that could be good. Who would be the worst brother for James Bond to have.’ so we thought, ‘Alright this northern working class bloke who’s got nine kids, who’s on the dole, who’s in the boozer a lot, does a tiny little bit of heroin and is completely chatty and a really lovely guy.’ And for him to be stuck with this super serious spy who is killing people the whole time would be a really good and funny combination. Was there also a part of you that secretly wanted to do an action movie? Well my hidden admission is that I actually like action movies. I actually like watching Marvel movies and Bond, not so much the last Bond, I found it very confusing, but up until then I really like the Bonds and Bournes, so I thought it would be great MAYHeMMAG |

to do a funny version of those but keep it totally real. so I assembled some of the people who worked on Star Wars, we got ridley scott’s special effects team, we got the visual guys who do all the Bournes and the Mission Impossible stuff and we got this action director who has done some Marvel movies and Now You See Me, Louis Letterier, who’s a protégé of Luc Besson, to make this. I wanted it to be a movie that could rival and be as good, if not better, than any of those movies but also be hilarious. But fi rst and foremost be a real action movie. The people of Grimsby seem ok about it. They’re not trying to sue you like some were in Kazakhstan? This film is about a particular character that’s made up, he could be from anywhere. And in the same way that Bruno isn’t representative of all gay people or all Austrian people and Borat isn’t representative of Kazakhastani people, Nobby is not representative of your average person from Grimsby. I just loved the name Grimsby and

when I found out it actually existed, I thought ‘that’s a great place for him to come from’. I love the idea of this James Bond guy originally coming from Grimsby. so I would love them to see it. some of them will absolutely hate it but I think a lot of them will laugh. No doubt they will. At the end of the day he’s this normal bloke who some people in the government would probably see as a scrounger, who’s on the dole and claiming benefits he shouldn’t be. But he’s basically a loving guy who loves his family and touring around those kind of northern towns, which I did for a while. You realise the whole concept of people being scroungers is a bit of a misnomer. It’s not like there is an option to get a job in most of those places, the industries are being completely shut down and there are no opportunities. so the options are either you leave your family and you travel for a few hours to a different town or you go on the dole. so I think it was a real eye opener actually.

“I was lucky not to get killed” What did people say to you when you visited these places – did you go into pubs? Yeah I went into pubs. I basically wanted to meet real life Nobbys, so people who had 15 kids. I’d just sort of turn up in their living room and people would go, ‘dad, why is Ali G by the telly.’ so it was good sort of hanging out in these people’s houses and then going to the pubs. There was one bloke who came up to me in the pub and goes, ‘Wait a minute, are you Ali G?’ And I said, ‘No, I’m not’, because I wanted to keep a low profi le – I wanted to observe people. But he goes, ‘No, you’re Ali G aren’t you? everybody it’s Ali G’. And I go, ‘Listen, I did play Ali G.’ And he goes, ‘No you’re not! You’re not sacha Baron cohen. Why would sacha Baron cohen be here?’ so I go, ‘A lright, I’m not sacha Baron cohen.’ And he goes, ‘Yes you are! everyone it’s sacha Baron cohen.’ so this went on for about three hours with this bloke. 30 mayhem! | SPRING 2016

The humour in the north of England is great. People love a laugh, you know, people from these working class families or non-working class families, you know. One of the things that binds people from dispossessed communities together is humour, so, I hope they’ll love it. You’ve talked about Ali G, there’s also Borat and Bruno – have you really retired those characters? Are they no more? They’re no more because it’s hard to do them with the age of Twitter and Instagram and social media. I used to make those fi lms when you could get one politician in Washington and then you could interview another eight politicians in Washington. The problem is now if I’m Ali G interviewing somebody in the republican party they’ll send out an email to everyone. so it’s sort of impossible to do that, which is a shame, because I loved them but in

retrospect though I was lucky not to get killed making the last few fi lms. There were some hairy situations? There were defi nitely some hairy situations, particularly the amount of gun crime there is now in America. And with Bruno particularly a lot of people that we’d interview would have guns on them and I’d be trying to have sex with them which is never an ideal combination. What is your favourite Ali G interview? Mohammed Al Fayed was great? Yeah he was great. There were so many amazing guys and women I interviewed, but probably going to the FBI and breaking into the FBI. Going as a fake person in to the agency that is designed to prevent fake people doing naughty things and interviewing the head of the FBI was a real thrill. But I loved it, I loved doing all those characters.

thinGs that can ruin

YOUr TrIP TO WOrK

Most of us will admit to the nine to five slog as the worst part of our day. So it’s vital that we circumvent the remaining hours of our day as effectively as possible. Here’s three possible land mines that could ruin your day before you even get to work.

bus bottle And so we come to the great nemesis of our times. The very thing that strikes fear into the heart of every bus user. I’m talking about the empty bottle! There is no getting away from it. The moment that bottle rolls into your feet is an education in absolute terror. so what do you do? Kick it away? Then you’re no better than the very person (and I use that term loosely) that left it. You could pretend to ignore it of course but as you and I both know you won’t be able to relax until the issue is resolved. Act too late and things will go from bad to worse as it rolls ever closer to the stairwell. One more left turn and that bottle is going to roll straight down the stairs, making a thunderous crash with every step it hits.

taKe away tea Briton’s love tea. This is a fact. But take-away tea is another story. Most of us on the move will opt for a latte or Americano every time. This is because it requires little to no effort on our part. A coffee arrives already complete and ready for consumption. But tea requires attention. Time to infuse. Time the modern day commuter doesn’t have. The take-away tea normally comes as a crude offering of a tea bag callously thrown on top of boiling hot water. We then have to use a splintery stick to squeeze every ounce of flavour out of the bag while the sheer heat of the cup means we have to constantly shift it from hand to hand, all the while people stare on bemused, mocking us, as if to imply we don’t know how to hold a cup properly. And the end result of this rather unsavoury ordeal is an overly hot, cardboard tasting tea imposter. sorry tea, I’ll have a coffee. 32 mayhem! | SPRING 2016

no Man’s land When patiently waiting at the side of the road you may occasionally come across a conscientious driver. Having slowed to a stop and gesturing for you to take advantage of their kind offer to cross, they will inevitably pat themselves on the back having checked off their good deed of the day, unintentionally leaving you at the mercy of the traffic passing in the opposite direction. Traffic that has made no such deal to allow an impromptu crossing. What follows is an all too real flashback to 80s nostalgia as you fi nd yourself the unwitting player in a game of human Frogger.

An empty can is another story. An empty can rolling around the aisle is easily rectified. Just slowly and quietly crush it beneath your feet so it can no longer roll around causing mayhem. But a bottle? A bottle has a lid. screwed on almost to laugh in the face of being silenced by crush. ‘Ha’ it shouts and kamikazes to the floor below. But do not fear. There is a solution. You may not like it, but life is rarely fair. Gently grasp the bottle between your feet and keep it place. You’re now the keeper of the bottle. A title few want, and even fewer rise to. In reward you will be hailed a hero of the people and your fellow passengers will applaud your sacrifice as you get up to leave.

Generation Gap

beinG a

Millennial

WRITTEN BY hannah GoodinG

In a world with a split between the old and the new, the Millennials and Gen X are constantly at each other’s throats. It seems to be the default to assume that Millennials are just phone-obsessed recluses, whereas Gen X are the true workers and generally speaking superior. According to them.

“Why are you always on your phone? Who can you possibly be talking to at this hour?” Nicole, from Florida. Will, from spain. Tom, from down the road. A phone is no longer just a means of a call and chat, it’s a platform for a debate about any topic under the sun. It’s to fi nd news from different countries all over the world, it’s to read ghost stories before you fall asleep to scare yourself silly. Phones are miniature computers that are a gateway to thousands of ideas that were not available to the generation before us, Gen X. And so, apparently, this must be a bad thing.

Taking a picture of yourself with friends in a new location that you’re visiting to savour the moment is not a bad thing. A bad thing is the looming angst of a generation that assumes all of these actions are self-absorbed and negative. Queen elizabeth 1st had a single portrait of herself repeatedly copied as it was the only one that she ever liked. What difference is re-posting a picture to different social apps in 2016, other than it’s significantly cheaper? Is it so wrong to allow your children to enjoy the inventions of their time?

would cost £242,000. Is this not more worrying than your teenager reading on their phone instead of a newspaper? It seems that any change in a new generation, particularly if it was not available to an older generation, is detrimental to the people undergoing it. There is needless criticism and blame forced upon a generation with social media, who live in a world surrounded by advertisements, hyper-sexuality and more people than ever before. Having the Internet at our fingertips does not make us any lazier or stupid than the generation before us. It simply means that Millennials can generate pleasure from different methods which do not necessarily mean social interaction. And this isn’t a bad thing. social media does not make for a indolent generation. It makes for a different style of interaction – it’s the individual who may have an obsession with their phone. The entire generation doesn’t deserve this blame.

where are your manners?

Clarence Thomas once said that good manners open doors that even the best education cannot. This goes for all areas of your life; relationships, career success and exciting new opportunities can all result from making a positive first impression. Good manners are related to self-assurance and people skills, so they’re incredibly important in achieving major goals.

crackinG!

Whether you like your eggs scrabbled, fried, poached or boiled; eggs are a great source of protein. Eggs have a little bit of everything that we need, which is why they’re pretty much one of the most perfect and most nutritious foods on the planet. Here are Mayhem!’s top five, and we’ll try to avoid any egg-puns!

why easter eGGs? Many people might believe that easter is just another commercial holiday. christians believe easter time is to symbolise the resurrection of Jesus. They believe that after Jesus died on the cross, he rose from the dead and the egg is to symbolise Jesus’ resurrection, and when eggs are cracked open, they symbolise the empty tomb. eggs generally are traditionally symbolised for fertility and rebirth.

why do we have chocolate eGGs?

PacK in those vitaMins eating eggs are a quick and easy way to pack in a few extra vitamins, one egg is packed with vitamin B2, B12, A and e which are great for breaking down food into energy, for growth, help to increase red blood cells, improve eye-site and help fi ght off cancer. Many of these vitamins are difficult to fi nd in other food sources.

helP to lose weiGht eggs are around 78 calories and great to help slim that waist-line. eggs can help you to control your calorie intake because they make you feel fuller for longer. eggs do contain cholesterol, but this will not increase your blood cholesterol level; in fact eggs provide nearly half of your daily protein intake and help reduce cholesterol.

Mineralise yourself Minerals may seem like a vague unimportant thing to consider with food, but the vital minerals that are in eggs, such as Zinc, Iron and Phosphorus, will help you feel rejuvenated, full of life, boost your immune system and look after your bones and teeth. MAYHeMMAG |

Pasturised eGGs eggs from hens that were raised on a pasture, will mean that the eggs are higher in Omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids are good for reducing the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. Look out for the free-range label, or referred to as ‘pasture-raised’.

eGGs are yuMMy! Whether you’re adding eggs to the ingredients for baking or a simple stir-fry, there are so many ways to make your food egg-tastic! (sorry). You can add an egg to almost anything, see recipe ideas for eggs with casseroles, rice, curry powder, pizza and even soup, and it’s an easy way to pack in a few extra vitamins and minerals.

Originally early easter eggs were painted and decorated to have in homes and during the 17th and 18th century egg-shaped toys were sold to children by manufacturers. The fi rst chocolate eggs began in the 19th century in France and Germany, and they were originally solid and quite bitter-tasting. The ingredients and chocolate-making techniques have now developed to the hollow eggs we have today. These quickly became very popular and the word spread.

why do we have an easter bunny? The easter bunny became popular in the 19th century as rabbits were seen to give birth to a big litter as this symbolised new life. The easter bunny has been traditionally referred to as laying the chocolate easter eggs, so we can enjoy our easter egg hunts. But why not other animals that give birth to litters? rabbits are linked to springtime and have been since ancient times. It’s believed that the Anglo-saxon Goddess of spring, eostre had a hare as a companion and later christians changed the hare into the easter bunny. However, in switzerland, easter eggs are hidden by a cuckoo and in Germany a fox! Whether you believe in the tradition or just enjoy gorging on a delicious chocolate egg or two, enjoy the two extra Bank holidays for easter!

how is Gin created? The base note in all gins is the juniper berry, giving the spirit its distinct flavour. coriander, cardamom, lemon peel, orange peel and nutmeg are just a few ingredients added which completes the drink. It’s the variety of botanicals used today that create some epic gin concoctions. From north to south here’s a few gins to sample…

a tiPPle of history there’s speculation about the origin of gin, some say is wasn’t made for human consumption (in the social sense) but believed to originate from Holland in the early 1600s. it was used for medicinal purposes to treat stomach complaints and gout. Other sources believe it was us Brits who stumbled across the spirit while fighting the thirty years war, a number of wars that took place across europe between 1618 and 1638. while fighting in Holland the Dutch apparently drank gin for courage and the saying ‘Dutch Courage’ was born. we then brought it back to england where it became a tarnished spirit, associated as the ‘poor man’s drink’ due to its affordability and ‘mothers ruin’ as it was favoured by women who neglected their children and prostituted their daughters. Gin has come a long way since then, proving to be a popular and fashionable tipple. in the last five years gin has taken our country by storm, with over 30 gin distillers in the UK and more than 50 different brands in Britain alone. From the quintessential Gordons and Beefeater, to the new hipsters hitting the shelves. MAYHeMMAG |

gIN reCIPeS You can thank Holland for this king of the liquor realm. It’s so special to us Brits that riots broke out over ‘The Gin Act’ in 1736, which made gin tremendously expensive, much to the fury of common folk, with whom gin was a fi rm favourite. It’s pretty costly now depending on whether you’re a brand basic’s fan or a Gin Mare progenitor, but less of the riots unless you’ve had a bit much. While we’re teetering on the edge of summer, here are some top gin recipes to get under your belt for the coming summer nights.
