Three steps to safe use of agrichemicals We understand that there are a lot of different requirements relating to agrichemicals so it might be hard to know where to start. But we recommend starting with these three steps:

Step 1 Put together an inventory of your agrichemicals An inventory is simply a list of the agrichemicals on your farm. It’s a legal requirement to have an inventory and it’s a great way to start thinking about the risks of agrichemical use. What needs to be on the inventory?

Name of the product Its UN number (see section 14 of SDS) Where it is stored The maximum quantity you are likely to have stored Any particular requirements for its storage A copy of the safety data sheet (SDS) for each product listed.

It’s also useful to include: • • •

Hazard classifications HSR number (EPA’s approval number, see section 15 of SDS) Any particular requirements for its use.

Hazardous Substances Inventory

Step 2 Training and certification You must ensure your staff are trained in the safe use of agrichemicals. If you are using highly ecotoxic agrichemicals, you also have a responsibility to ensure staff are trained to reduce risks to the environment. And of course, there is a food safety risk to manage too.

Growsafe offers training and certification that covers all the regulatory requirements of WorkSafe, EPA, regional councils and market assurance schemes (except for Certified Handler which has some additional requirements – see next page).

If you undertake Growsafe training, your staff will be well placed to keep themselves safe but you still need to ensure your staff know the operating guidelines and emergency procedures for your farm.

I’ve got a Growsafe Introductory certificate. How do I renew that?

Growsafe Introductory has been replaced by the Basic and Standard certificates – you will need to decide at which certificate level you want to renew.

Growsafe certificates Growsafe Basic This training is for users working under supervision and firsttime agrichemical users who need practical training.

This course provides practical, task-related knowledge and skills with a focus on safety. The emphasis is on following workplace procedures and label instructions.

There is a short written assessment and basic practical competency to be demonstrated.

Growsafe Standard This training is for users working independently (ie with little or no supervision) or taking responsibility for the farm. They may have responsibility for managing or supervising others.

The course covers the safe, responsible and effective application of agrichemicals, risk management and understanding of regulatory and market requirements.

There is a written assessment and evidence of practical competency is required.

What training do my staff and I need for agrichemical use

Growsafe recommends that all staff using agrichemicals attend a Growsafe Basic course and at least one person from each workplace hold a Growsafe Standard certificate.

Certified Handler For most farms, Growsafe certification will meet all your regulatory requirements. However, if you are using highly toxic substances you also need a Certified Handler certificate.

This is only required if you are using substances with a 6.1A or 6.1B hazard classification.

Examples of products with class 6.1A or B hazard classifications Refer to your inventory and the SDSs for your products as formulations may have changed.

Herbicides Paraquat (eg Gramoxone, Parable, Preeglone, Speedy 250) Triazanone (eg Agpro Metamitron, Mitron 70WG, Goltix, Goltix Flo) Insecticides Terbufos (eg Counter 20G) Dichlorovos (eg Divap, Methafos, Nuvos) Methamidophos (eg Metafort 60SL) Talk to your Growsafe trainer about the process to obtain a Certified Handler certificate. A Growsafe Standard certificate is usually a prerequisite and there are additional requirements which may involve a visit to your farm to check your agrichemical management.

Note: Under transition arrangements, if you have a current Approved Handler certificate, this is sufficient until it expires. To continue to use highly toxic substances you will then have to apply for a Certified Handler certificate.

Step 3 Safe agrichemical storage Your agrichemical store is the area of highest risk – with potentially large quantities of concentrated hazardous substances.

Here are some examples of good practice. How does your store rate?

Construction o Located away from flammable substances such as fuel

o

Located away from houses, farm dairy, waterways, and other sensitive areas

o

Secure and able to be locked

o

Ventilated

o

Good lighting

o

Dry – no leaks or seepage

o

Sealed floor, with bunding to contain any spills

o

Sealed shelves that will not absorb spills

Management of store o All containers have original labels – no old, unknown products o

Nothing in the store except agrichemicals – no tools, PPE, fertiliser, animal feed or animal remedies

o

Spill kit either nearby outside store or just inside the door of store

o

Separate sections of store for herbicides and insecticides/fungicides

o

Drip trays for smaller containers

o

Signage on outside (HAZCHEM, No Smoking and other signs if required due to volume stored)

o

Highly toxic substances (class 6.1A and B) secured so they are only accessible by the Certified Handler, not all staff

o

First aid kit and water source for rinsing eyes/skin nearby outside store.

Delivery of agrichemicals Do you get your agrichemicals delivered to you by your rural retailer? If you are not home to receive the delivery, make sure you have arrangements to ensure products are left in a secure place. It is not okay to have hazardous substances left unattended.

Who we are Growsafe is provided by the New Zealand Agrichemical Education Trust, an industry owned, not-for-profit organisation.

We want to ensure all agrichemical users have the skills and knowledge to use agrichemicals safely, and we want to help them operate responsibly and within the law.

We believe that building the skills and competence of agrichemical users is best achieved with a high-quality national training and certification system run by an independent organisation.

It leads to better understanding and decision-making. It helps to protect the safety of workers, protects the environment and strengthens the reputation and value of the primary products we sell locally and in our export markets.

What we do We provide a range of training programmes that are tailored to meet the need of industry and agrichemical users. This means that we: •

work with industry, regulators and employers to develop training programmes that cover the competencies required to handle agrichemicals

•

support training of agrichemical users by developing high quality training resources and Train the Trainer programmes

•

administer a national certification scheme and award the Growsafe certificate to individuals who have met our assessment criteria

•

maintain a secure database of organisations and individuals who have taken part in training and achieved certification.

WHAT WE DO

Growsafe Accredited Trainers

Growsafe does not deliver courses itself but accredits specialist trainers to do this under its rules and quality assurance systems.

Trainers may specialise in a particular industry, region or they may provide training across the country. Trainers set their own fees and training schedules.

Some trainers are independent GROWSAFE ACCREDITED TRAINERS and others are part of training providers such as polytechnics.

Trainers can run public courses or courses tailored to individual companies, groups of companies or industry sectors.

Trainers are regularly reviewed and appraised by Growsafe to ensure ongoing quality. Assessments are moderated annually.

Trainers attend an annual Growsafe trainer seminar and are required to keep up with industry developments.
